Perry's Principles: The burden of student loans

It's that time of year...when the college acceptance letters are in and those first tuition checks will soon be going out. As college costs continue to sky-rocket, a new report finds that student loan debt has now topped credit card debt for the first time.

Perry's Principles: Parents opt out of standardized tests

It's the time of the year when elementary school students across the country are taking standardized tests. But, parents of nine students at Park Forest Elementary in State College, PA are opting out of the testing for their children.

The parents say the testing is too stressful and found a loophole in the state's rules that allowed them to opt out.

Perry's Principles: Students learn three times less from bad teachers

A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research shows students learn three times more from a top-performing teacher than from a bottom-performing teacher.

The NBER's findings also show the importance of a good teacher in the long-run; in one year, a well-above-average teacher– in this case, one that's in the 84th percentile of effectiveness– may lead to as much as $400,000 in additional lifetime earnings for his class of 20 compared to an average teacher.
