Bo Obama 'loves to chew'

First lady Michelle Obama gives an update on the first dog, calling him 'crazy.' CNN's Alina Cho reports.

Bo Obama is apparently Issue #1 among third grade voters.

The first dog was a hot topic at the White House yesterday, when Michelle Obama held what she's called her “first press conference” with the children of White House staffers. The kids were invited there in honor of Take Your Child to Work Day.

One of the first questions to the First Lady was about how Bo was adjusting to his new home.

Michelle Obama described him as "a crazy dog." Bo "loves to chew on peoples' feet," she said. Mrs. Obama told a story about the night before, when Bo was apparently barking loudly in the White House residence.

"Everybody was asleep, and we hear all this barking and jumping around. The President and I came out and we thought somebody was out there. It was just Bo. And he was playing with his ball, and it was like there was another person in the house."

The first lady says that she's spending a lot of time walking and training Bo these days, but of course, he's still a puppy.

You know, with all the issues and problems facing our country and its people, I find it laughable that so many people are so "wrapped around the axle" over the "First Dog". How vapid and brainless are Americans?! Get out of your tabloid-loving, reality-TV watching ignorance and take a look around. Our kids are dumber than bricks, our economy is in shambles, our government and elected officials are completely out of touch, and we worry endlessly about the Obamas' dog, what Hollywood celebrities are doing, and whether or not we can "keep up with the Jones'". Wake up for God's sake!

Why is everyone complaining about this being "news"? Isn't it nice to have a light hearted, refreshing clip now and then?

I agree with Trina in that the puppy should be crated at night. Puppies require discipline in the first formative year. My Shih Tzu is now a year and a half and he is so much better now than when he was just a little guy. Enjoy puppyhood since you only have it once!! All puppies are just precious!!

YOU BABBLING DEMONS, THE OBAMA'S DID NOT BUY THE DOG HE WAS A GIFT. IT IS SO SAD THAT SOME PEOPLE FIND ANYTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. AND GUESS WHAT, IF THEY DID BUY THE DOG I AM SURE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WITH THEIR MONEY AND NOT YOURS. DID YOU ALL COMPLAIN ABOUT BUSHS' DESIGNER DOGS "NOT", DID YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FIRST DAUGHTERS DRINKING AND DOING GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE "NOT", DID YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PROBLEMS THAT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION PUT US IN OVER THE LAST 8 YEARS? "NOT" SO SHUT UP AND MOVE TO ANOTHER COUNTRY IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PRESIDENT!

White House ghosts, no doubt. It's long been rumored to be haunted. Perhaps Lincoln or one of his sons, Willie. Dogs can see spirits invisible to humans.

Wow... people are dying of starvation, are homeless or are about to be, just struggling altogether, and we're worried about the President's dog? I just don't get it... but to each their own. Cute dog, by the way.

It's a puppy. Puppies bite and chew on things. Puppies are adorable because if they werent people would get rid of them because they are a lot of work. He will grow out of it. They should hire a puppy trainer so they can learn how to handle him and what to expect. He needs to be in a crate at night, too.

LOL @ the serious "ghosts" and "environmental anomaly" theories. I guess theses people would be sitting up with Bo, using EMF meters and wearing tinfoil hats, jumping at shadows.

Why do I get the feeling the dog whisperer would be terrible for this dog? Besides the fact that that guy is a terrible dog trainer. Seriously, positive reinforcement training works. No need for fear based training. And he's just a puppy. Chewing is normal. If someone thinks that requires special attention, they shouldn't have a dog.

If people don't consider this 'news', why are they reading it and spending time commenting on how this isn't news?? I believe CNN gives basic info in the title of the article to alert you to what the subject is, so if it's not of interest to you, you can skip it. Why are you complaining about an article you chose to read?

I think it's nice to hear about a cheerful story, especially with eveything else going on these days, and it makes the first family that much more relatable and likeable in my opinion. having gotten a puppy recently i know how much of your life they can swallow up. and honestly if you aren't interested in the human nature stories that are here online, why on earth would you take the time to read it???

WOW.... the whining losers of the last couple of rounds of elections will try to turn ANYTHING into a platform for their simpering..... geez, sounds to me like the DOG has more sense than the rot-wing whiners responding to his existence.

And Obama didn't promise to GET a dog from a shelter... he said they were looking into it.... apparently with their daughter's allergies that didn't work for them.... SURPRISE their daughter's health comes before the politically correct act of adopting from a shelter just to make the whiners happy..... good for them.

And for the nuts who think the Obamas don't "belong" in the whitehouse?..... laundered your peaked white hood lately? He WON the election, therefore they belong there..... your candidate lost, deal with it and move on in life.

Did anyone complain about any other dogs in the WH being on the news? Their older daughter has allegies and the dog was a gift. Probably all of you making the nasty comments don't have a shelter dog either. It is the FIRST FAMILY – they can do whatever they want in their household just like each and everyone of you can do in your household. The children asked Ms. Obama about BO (she didn't bring it up). Stop being so angry and show love because that is what the OBAMAS are about LOVE and trying to make this a better place to live, while still trying to live a normal life for their girls. STOP THE HATE!

    Two words: Bark Busters!

All you people who are complaining about this not being news, then why did you read it. What did Laura Bush do for 8 years, nothing but smile and look at her crazy husband. The real news story isnt about the dog, the story was about the kids who asked questions and the dog was one of the questions. If you don't want to support your president, then move to another country!!!

I've been wondering where Mrs. Obama has been and what she has been doing lately because her work as a First Lady has not been chronicled much lately except when she travels with her husband or visits a school somewhere, and it always big news is when a First Lady first comes to the White House and starts her initiatives. Well, now we know! Keep up the good work because Bo will get older and calmer and be a great pet.

Since dogs are thought to be 7 years for every 1 of humans, then BO may be in the "Terrible Twos" children go through even though he is only 6 months. Perhaps Michelle needs to hire The Dog Whisperer to train him. It is my understanding one of the girls was allergic to various breeds of dog and getting one from a shelter they were not sure if some of what she is allergic to was mixed in, hence a more pure-bred choice.

    Dorothy-
The fact that you could get so upset over an article about the first family's puppy is quite disturbing. Even more disturbing, that you would waste so much time writing SEVERAL lines about something that you obviously took the time to read, yet feel is nonsense. Here are a few suggestions that may make your day (and the day of those around you) run a bit more smoothly.
    1) Read headlines carefully. If the headline alludes to something you do not feel is worth your time, do not read the article.
    2) If you do accidentally read something that you feel is 'nonsense', do not waste even more of your obviously valuable time by proceeding to write a lengthy comment about it. That is like being cut with both edges of the sword, don't you agree?
    3) Consider prozac or some other mood enhancing drug. No one who is mentally balanced should be that angry at a puff piece about the president's cute little puppy dog.
I thought the article was cute, and a refreshing change from the child killing, wildfires, torture, and other negativity that the media bombards us with constantly. Have a nice day, Dorothy, and try to find something positive that makes you smile. I'm sure everyone who interacts with you will appreciate it!

What a lot of nonsense about the pup not coming from a shelter!
This dog is now in his SECOND home.
He was unwanted and has now found a permanent home. What's the difference? Get over it.

As to the little rascal's playfulness, it just means he's a happy, healthy little dog. Pups grow up all too soon. The Obama's should just enjoy his baby ways. I'm sure the girls are loving it.

Jacqueline, you are ill informed if you think most "pound" dogs are of mixed breed. We are griping precisely because of your ignorance. There are shelter and rescue groups for EVERY breed on earth. If Obama had rescued he could have brought this to light so people liek you would not STILL be in ignorance. You can find every pure breed on earth abandoned and needing a home. It's a tragedy, and one that Obama could have made a real a difference on! A true broken campaign promise (and I do love the Obamas, but this saddens me)

Dogs aren't anything like children Robert, if you think job are children, you better get a new life. Because dogs can never take the place of fellow human beings. Dogs are stupid small brain animals, who drool and lick you, they aren't cute their stupid, unlike a humans. Adopt a child who needs you not some ugly mutt. Save humans that are dying worldwide not some mutt from a foreign country. Help a child that lived in a abusive home who could actually save the world. Not some unintelligent dog. I cannot believe the snide nasty remarks some of you people make. You keep on talking about a "shelter dog" even though it has been printed a zillion times that Malia is allergic. You people must have miserable lives. Our president is working so hard to turn this country around and all you can do is criticize him. What will you do when he "fixes" all the Hell that was wrought by Bush and Cheney. Get a life you disgusting people and just don't read about Bo. And my name isn't dorothy, and that's what people like you shell due to our country, your so fed up with your dog that you don't care what's happening to your fellow Americans. Hundreds of people are laid off every day, and this new stimulus package isn't going to do anything to help this wonderful country out. If you look at the debt is over a 30 trillion dollars. Yes 30,000,000,000 dollars. I'm neither Democrat or Republican, because those 2 parties are stupid, letting what one side says dictate your ideas. No, I'm a speaker of the people, and if Obama doesn't start doing something, America is going to start seeing problems that Germany had in the early 1900's, right when ADolf Hitler came into power. Look up his history and you'll see the scariest piece of work ever. Your little dog wont help you get over it then

why do recent presidents always get some little girlie dog? usually a foreign breed. Get something american, who represents who we are. like a pit bull. Lets face it, Pit bulls have always been the all american dog. and they are hero's as well, they have saved lives and given thier lives in heroic acts. No dog like bo obama has ever done that. Obama should have taken in one of Michael Vick's rescue dog's. Or got one from the pound.

Geez CNN , enough already with the "1st dog"! It's a puppy. Puppies do cute, crazy, annoying, silly things and Bo appears to be no different. Much more newsworthy is that thousands and thousands of other peoples' pets are being given up to shelters because their owners have lost their jobs & can't care for them. Maybe you could devote a little more coverage to that so that the issue gets attention and these unfortunate people who are losing everything else in their lives may at least be able to keep their furry friends close for comfort during these harsh times.

They got a purebred to make sure their daughter's allergies wouldn't be affected. My mom has always adopted shelter dogs, but my husband and I also chose a purebred because we wanted to make sure there woudn't be any breed mixed in that would cause problems with my son's allergies. It's great to rescue a dog if you can.... but if not, support the shelters and have your dog spayed or neutered. That's what we do, that's what the Obamas are doing, so get off their backs.

    TNT, et al.

Are you guys STILL on the shelter topic? PWDs don't usually show up in shelters at all. And with Malia's allergies, it was one of several dogs that were feasible. The Obamas didn't "get him," he was given to them by Senator Kennedy, who also has PWDs. Bo was a "second chance" dog, in that he didn't work out in his first home, which comes close to being a shelter dog. The fact that he didn't have to go through a rescue group was purely happenchance. Luckily, the breeder, like all reputable breeders, took him back when he didn't work out.

As for his playing with the "ghosts" in the White House, that is usually more common with First Cats, no First Dogs. I agree, crating him might be the way to go. He DOES need training, and he does need lots of attention.

I really feel that some people on here are getting TOO MUCH into the Obama's personal business. This family should be able to buy whatever kind of dog that they want from wherever (as long as they aren't abusing the animal), send their children to whatever school they want and wear whatever appropriate attire they want without anyone else's approval. Please STOP nitpicking them and trying to make them into you. If we were all as "avtively conscious" about social issues as you would like, then we should all wear clothes made of 100% natural materials that were manufactured by a small business who uses100% green technology. We should all live in 100% green houses made of only natural materials, use no plastic whatsoever, eat only home grown or organic foods and have at least 1 adopted child living with us. Give them a break. Let them live their lives and you live yours!

If this dog has high energy then he needs to be exercised every day! A run in the morning BEFORE given ANY affection (that includes feeding him). He needs a JOB. He needs his breed's special abilities to be put to work. It makes dogs feel useful...like they have a purpose. Didn't they do some research before getting a dog??? It's obvious the president of the united states is NOT his dog's pack leader.

And yes I agree....They REALLY need to call Cesar Millan in. He's been to the White House before to speak. Not just for ratings or anything but for the dog's sake and the family's sake. He's making the family look embarrased.

To all the negative people: If the President handed you a million dollars (for no reason), I am sure you would be complaining it wasn't a million and one, instead of saying thank you.

Remember: The First Lady was talking to a bunch of the staffs kids and they asked her about the dog. She was talking to KIDS! Of course she would using wording a child would understand – like crazy.

The Obama's seem to be very involved parents that don't have others raising their girls and I, as a parent, find it refreshing. They are making the White House a happier place and making sure their girls are happy as well.

Some people can find the negative in ANY situation. I feel sorry for you as you will never be happy.

I for one appreciate a "nice" story. There are plenty of gloom and doom articles on here every day. It's nice to have a break and read something uplifting.

I'm even going to forego my usual comments about how the president didn't keep his promise to rescue a dog. AND I'm not going to repeat that had they adopted from a shelter, that could have created a wonderful opportunity to remind people to adopt, not breed. AND, I'm sure that with a little effort they could have found a shelter dog who was suitable for someone with allergies. OK, seems I'm not going to forego my usual comments after all.

Still, overall, even the controversy of the president not adopting a shelter dog after saying he would, has brought the issue of animals in need back to the public's attention. Hopefully, it inspired some people to rescue. So I'm all for more articles about the First Dog.

Actually, they wanted to get a dog from a shelter. Unfortunately, the girls have some pet allergy issues and they were trying to avoid triggering them by selecting from certain low-allergy breeds. Bo was originally placed, through his breeder, with another family and that family didn't work out. Sen Kennedy heard that the breeder was looking for another home for Bo and he suggested the Obamas.

@scrivener: Ha ha ha! Very funny. I know you are joking, but sadly there are people who believe in that EMF nonsense. They are stupid. Let's laugh at them together, shall we?

Nice looking dog but they are crazy animals and it will make the Obama's life hell. I think they will either give it up for adoption after a few months or they will just give up and let the White house staff take care of it.

    Good luck.

What a ray of sunshine in an absolutely dismal world. Luvs it! Reminds us that not everything is doom and gloom. To the pessimists, get over it. The Obama's picked the dog they wanted that suited their family and Malia's allergies. Please get a life!

i work with rescue groups and animal cops in giving medical care and rehabilitation for abandoned and abused animals. this is an important issue and deserves media attention since funds are so low and the amount of neglect and abuse is so high. i was so excited when i heard the obamas were adopting a shelter dog. now they buy an expensive pure breed. there goes the media attention needed for the animals left in the pound facing euthanasia.

Great, one more thing this administration can't handle. Give it up, SHELLY and BARRY. Huh, can't keep a dog down but we trust these guys with our economy and keeping us safe from OBL? Nice. Should have got a gerbil. 😉

I'm not sure I agree w/crating Bo. He's a pup. That's what they do for about 3 years or so and it's perfectly natural. I don't know if the Obamas find it annoying (doesn't really sound like it) but they will learn to love this dog as one of their own kids if they're anything like me. I have 7 dogs and they ARE my kids.

"Someone in the hall" ??? Yeah, probably some armed gaurds. This is the whitehouse, I dont think the president and first lady need to go check the hall.

Now dont everyone freak out, i dont think this a major thing, just an observation.

Who cares? There are people out of work. We look weak to others now and there are other problems.

TNT, first of all the PWD is not a "designer dog". It is an ancient breed genetically related to the poodle and has been used as a working dog in Europe for centuries. It has been recognized by the American Kennel Club since 1983. Secondly, the reason the Obamas chose the breed is because of their daughters' allergies. Because of this they were unable to simply go to the pound and choose just any dog. The PWD is one of a few breeds that have hypoallergenic fur. Contrary to your allegation, the Obamas have showed a great deal of responsibility in taking the time to thoroughly research their options so they would know exactly what they were taking on, which is something many people who decide to get a dog DON'T do. They have actually set a very good example.

Bo, sounds like a great dog. He would be great at getting sheep to follow him. In his dog language he is prodding them to take notice to him. Its great the Mrs. Obama is stepping up to the plate to train Bo; what a great pack leader as Obama is for the U.S. and the world.
