Editor's Note: With the White House and the Senate considering new measures for unemployment assistance, Wednesday’s American Morning audience suggested that “If President Obama and Congress want to do something effective to aid Americans then they could force Credit Card Companies to stop increasing ... interest rates to 30% for no reason other than pure greed.”

  • Duane: Saw Christine Romans report about additional efforts to deal with 10% unemployment. If President Obama and Congress want to do something effective to aid Americans then they could force Credit Card Companies to stop increasing our interest rates to 30% for no reason other than pure greed. Creating laws some time ago to reform credit practices like this and then giving the credit card companies a period of months before the changes are imposed has given them a license to steal. Lord knows they have stolen enough already and thus the reason for the reform. What they are doing to every American with a credit card balance is criminal.
  • Linda: Please do a little a little research and report the facts on unemployment benefits (and broadcast these facts every 5 minutes) I have been out of a job since August "08, I was only entitled to 13 weeks UC here in Fla due to the fact that I was on FEDERAL FAMILY LEAVE ACT from Ohio then had to move here so the time frame that Unemployment looks at – says only -I had no income for over 4 months.....my extension was then for 7 weeks and then 11 weeks= 31 weeks, but also the reality is-- the extensions are for a "percent" of original claim-or- " UP TO " 13 weeks or 20 weeks....QUIT SUGAR COATING WHAT OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS are NOT DOING FOR THE AMERICAN HUMAN BEING !!!!!!!!!!! My benefits ran out again last week and when they do implement another extension I will already be homeless AGAIN... yes, for the 3rd time in 1 year...with this eviction will tally up a total of $1,895 in lost security deposits.....which I no longer have a car because I didn't have $1,200 to pay for a new fuel pump (the part $400.) the remainder in labor charges (RAPE). WE need to clean up our own country and quit worrying about the rest of the world, we need to have access to our own money instead of letting our elected officials squander it..........WAKE UP CNN, report the reality of the mess -our own government- has created for us that used to work for a living !!!!!! I would give you my phone #, but I can't afford a phone. Which is why I assume you won't report the sad facts of reality...tell me , is it job security or just plain ignorance to the reality of how Americans are living in this pitiful country I USED to be proud of ???

What do you think the president and Congress should do about the unemployment rate?

I voted for Obama, but like so many Americans,am getting fed up.Instead of all the money bailing out banks, car companies and the like,I firmly believe that if each working American was given one million dollars, with the stipulation half had to be spent on consumer goods(preferably American made) the economy would improve very quickly. Our economy is 70% driven by consumer spending.Just think of all the spending that would go on!Once again, the American people sit back and hope that the trickle down theory works. So far,I sure don't see it. Really,I think this would have worked.

Help! My drivers license is being held for ransom.
Minnesota and other states gone greedy.
California resident here and I went yesterday to my local DMV office to renew my license and update my address. In 14 years I have had one parking ticket. I was told yesterday that I could not renew my drivers license until I contact the state of Minnesota. I called the number and found out that a hold had been put on my license from 14 years ago from me refusing to take a breathalyzer and that I must pay 680.00 fine before i can get my CA drivers license renewed. This is unfair and what planet are these whack jobs in public service positions ON? I can not afford this fine, I am on disability and am the only licensed driver in the house. I need the car to go to my doctor appointments and other day to day things normal average every day people need to do. I called my CA main office and Minnesota and both basically told me i was out of luck. Pay up or you will not be able to drive again. I dont know what to do at this point. I'm very frustrated and upset that my country doesn't care about the individual person, and that these financially broke states just want money any way they can get it.

GIVE US BACK OUR TAX DOLLARS, GIVE TO EACH TAX PAYING AMERICAN 18 YEARS OLD AND UP 5 TO 600,000.00 ........CANCEL ALL THEIR DEBT and move forward from there.....that is ONLY FAIR!!

Why is it that all those that received taxpayer money didn't have to pay any back debt, Banks and financiers, credit card companies...., it was forgotten - hmmmmm.....

Jessica Yellin's report on Credit Card companies and increased rates is a good start.

Disregarding why the Ohio family she interviewed had $18,000 of charges on their credit card she should follow up on her comment of the family having to make a choice between surgery (medical expense) and helping to pay for the son's college education.

Given the current debate on Health Insurance reform, wouldn't affordable health insurance remove a major worry for this family?

C'mon Guys , how about a little hard news and a little less cutesy commentary about whizzing, pee-peees, anchorettes gams and shoes, anchors neck ties and who is or is not wearing jeans around CNN, your personal child-raising bug-bears, and your travel dreams. – all of which I've heard in the past few days. " Most news in the Morning" ? – Pooh. Time to switch over to the BBC where the anchors are just as personable but a little less self-fixated.

For starters lets not try to police the world. Get out of Iraq & Afghanstan & use the money to help our own country get through this financial crisis so our kids can have a future . Make health care affordable for every american.
quit living above your means & adopt cash as king attitude. Get back to the basics this country was founded on.

The president and Congress should declare a moratorium on all but the most critically needed immigration until U.S. employment rates return to 4% or so. The U.S. Government currently encourages 1.5 to 1.9 million legal immigrants to immigrate to the U.S. ANNUALLY.

The attorney general should setup sting operations to catch employers who circumvent immigration laws. A Pittsburg legal firm was shown on YouTube holding a seminar to train HR personnel on how to circumvent immigration laws.

The cost of an H-1B visa should be increased to $25,000.

Eliminate the 20% tax break given to corporations that outsource jobs to foreign countries.

Enforce the U.S. border regulations; stop illegal immigration; deport illegal alien criminals.

Given a full hour, I probably think of ten more actions.

Give tax incentives to corporations that hire AMERICAN CITIZENS.

I think the media is out of control with Jon and Kate. One station asked if America and Kate should forgive Jon.....Seriously? for what?
Everyone only has to watch their past episodes to see what Kate was like. I support Jon 100% and everytime he goes on tv, Kate shows up shortly afterward somewhere and pretends to cry and make allegations just to get sympathy.

I think she is a good mother, and she wants all the money and celebrity status, but then on one episode, she told the kids to stay away from the papparazi because they are very bad? Can't anyone see through her?

Is anyone surprised Americans are angry? The other posts reflect the sheer frustration about (no) jobs and the seemingly obliviousness of politician and media to the real extent of un-employment. Where are the under-employed or jobless self-employed persons in the statistics – people for whom unemployment compensation has run out or could never be eligible in the first place. My husbands business tanked at the same time I lost my job with the resulting downward household economic spiral including foreclosure on a home we lived in for 18 years. Being in my late 50’s, it took me over two years to get a job and my husband who owned his own company can’t dumb down his resume enough to even be considered for minimum wage jobs even though he would gladly do them. Currently he works about 12 hours/week picking up trash at shopping centers. Is there any way to get accurate data about what is happening? Several days ago Christine Romans said there were 6 applicants for every job. I pulled up the 62 openings at my company and found an average of 47 applicants per position. Only two positions (for interpreters) had 2-3 applicants. Most had 50+, 60+, even 100+ applications. And spare us the notion that another stimulus package is going to help. Watching the history channel yesterday, I was made aware of the huge decline in the electrical structure (even down to electrical poles), the nations dams, and the nations sewage system (the pipes). Wouldn’t pouring (stimulus) money into those necessities make more sense so that the nation would have assured electricity, wouldn’t be in danger of flooded communities from dam breaks , and wouldn’t have hazardous waste from sewage in our neighborhoods. Surely there would then be a creation of jobs to fix these necessities. Can’t say the people in my own household would be qualified or hired to do these jobs, but at least we’d see tangible improvement in something. Until there are jobs, don’t even waste your breath trying to solve healthcare.
