American dad in Japan custody case set free

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) - An American man who had been accused of trying to take his children from his ex-wife was released from jail on Thursday and charges against him were dropped.

Police in the rural southern town of Yanagawa said Christopher Savoie was let go, under the condition that he not try to snatch the children again.

Savoie, 38, a Tennessee native and naturalized Japanese citizen, allegedly abducted his children - 8-year-old Isaac and 6-year-old Rebecca - as his ex-wife walked them to school on September 28 in Yanagawa.

With the children, Savoie headed for the nearest U.S. consulate, in the city of Fukuoka, to try to obtain passports for them. Screaming at guards to let him in the compound, Savoie was steps from the front gate but still standing on Japanese soil when he was arrested.

    I agree with Kenny. This country has lost validity due to it's constant double standards. I've always known the foundation of this country was a farse, but at least they used to try to hide it.

    What surprises me is that in this day & age that we are still so far apart. Guess things like this are not important, just smile at each other, trade goods and make money. So now Japan is a "safe haven" for a Japanese citizen to "kidnap" kids & the heck with our laws!

    Until his children are returned to him per U.S. and International Law every ship carrying Japanese made automobiles should be refused entry at the ports at Long Beach and Houston. Period. Time for some hardball....actually it's just time for someone in our government to grow some balls.

    It was all right when you people wouldn't let that Cuban kid go home with his father.What the hell is the difference:Talk about a double standard.But the rest of the world is not surprized.
