This was a cry for attention. I fear when the cameras stop coming, next time the cops will be called for a homicide.

It sounds to me like the balloon accidentally got away and the dad called the Federal Aviation Administration in hopes they could capture the balloon and return it to him (being that it cost so much to make). Without thinking of the consequences he told them his boy was inside. One thing led to another as the story escalated, he told his son to go hide in the attic.

I did some quick calculations based on an estimate from the home videos, and if that balloon is filled with helium it wouldn't have much more lift than about 20 pounds. If the father is supposed to be a "scientist" planning on launching equipment for "experiments" he would have known how much the thing could lift. The average weight of a 6 year old boy is about 45 pounds. There never should have been any concern that the boy was inside. This story doesn't add up.

I watched the live video of the balloon as it drifted across the Colorado plains and had serious doubts that anyone was aboard. Based on the dynamics of the "rock and roll" of the craft, it just did not look right. As the craft approached the ground it was readily apparent that the balloon's volume was simply inadequate to lift much of a load. Surely the self proclaimed "scientist" builder/father should have known this and quelled the fears of a nation as the "firghtened and helpless" boy's fate played out.
Publicity stunt? Prank gone wrong? Only the Henne's know for sure, but I hope the authorities figure it out and make the family pay, pay, pay.

Y-all have covered this story to death, literally. We're all glad the 6 year old is safe, we would never wish any harm to any child, but enough is enough. Who cares if they were on "Wife Swap" or what kind of language they use. Your network and others devoted hours of coverage, the same comments continuously and rehashing of tired old and irrelevant facts. Five plus hours of coverage on a five minute story is overkill.
