Patriots or Extremists? Growing up in a militia

By Jim Acosta

If there's one thing militias and their critics can agree on, it's the fact that this pro-gun and anti-Obama movement is growing in the United States. That begs the question, "who are these guys?"

We try to answer that in part two of our series, "Patriots or Extremists," by going home with the leader of a militia in Michigan.

Lee Miracle may run training exercises for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia once a month in a rural area outside of Flint, but he's just as busy at home. He and his wife Katrina have eight kids, and there are more than 20 guns in the house. This explains why Lee refers to the family as "Lee and Kate plus eight plus a gun rack."

Make that several gun racks. The Miracle children are very much growing up in the militia. They take part in militia training exercises, including the weapons training.

We were there when 13-year-old Megan fired off her shotgun, but even the couple's six-year-old has had her share of target practice.

It was said in this report there is no evidence of the government trying to ban guns. How about all of the comments by members of congress to blame the Fort Hood incedent on guns and not the wacko extremist? I guess now Congress and the Pres. will want to regulate guns on Army bases. These malitia guys are true Patriots!!!

They are extremist plane and simple. They have one idiot ranting against the government, yet he is a postal worker getting paid and his insurance from the government.

John, You ask if these people are Patriots or Extremists, well, if you have to ask John, you already answered the question on your Own..They are extreme Patriots, which happen to watch wayyyy-tooo-much Glen Beck..!! Glen Beck is part of the ONLY Right-wing-nut Cable News channel that will allow him to spill out his right-wing ideology and thinking he is helping folks, but he is only hurting those who actually believe he has any kind of real common sense..Glen Beck spouts out his hate and his opinions, which in no way has anything to do with the Truth, and is completely Bias, and false. I am glad that I am an independent, and will never listen to this guy, because if you do, and you take anything he says to heart, you should be locked up, and given medication for right-wing idiots disease. Glen Beck is a fool, and is only mad because we have an african american president, and if we didnt, he wouldnt have a Job..He would be pandering to the right-wing Tea Party people on his radio show, and good buddies with Rush the Druggie Limbaugh..The Drug-ster, is even worse then he is, he is a right wing terd

The Oath Keepers are Patriots - absolutely!!!

I'm glad to know they exist!

If our representatives in Washington took their oath to the Constitution half as seriously as the Oath Keepers do our country wouldn't be on the precipice of financial ruin right now. We need term limits!

P.S. Why isn't CNN reporting on all the "errors" and misreporting of the jobs 'Saved & Created' on recovery.gov? You seem to be ignoring that story. What about all those reports from state districts that don't even exist that have jobs saved & created listed on the site??!!! Hmm....
Strange, huh? And this is the same govt that some people think are qualified to run our health care system?! Wake up America!

Definitely Extremists! It is exactly this type of organization that breeds hatred, and amongst those are members who may take it too far. A handful of members may develop exteme hatred toward the President leading to attempted assassination. Years ago, the existence of such militants and their attitude would be considered treason. Anyone who considers joining such a group has been brain-washed and if one can be brain-washed this easily, it is dangerous.

Thes guys were quiet as church mice when Bush was creating the damage that they all say they are so upset about– ie, out of control spending. I beleive there is an element of overall fatigue with the government; and admittedly, the nation has gotten pretty far off from some of the founding fathers' vision of it– but NO ONE removed the line "I will obey the orders of the president" while Bush was in office. I really think these guys are just MAD that a black dude is president. No matter how the educated coasts see the world, we must remmeber that there is a HARD CORE group of people who are totally fine believing and supporting the idea that this country was founded for white men to be in charge. They will arm themselves and, in the name of the constitution, be angry and vocal until Obama is out of office. They will pipe down promptly when a white man is back in the Executive Office, trust.

As for health care, I'd feel better about it if Congress and Obama et al were going to have to use the same plan as my family. I still think it's a boondoggle and overreach by gov't.

I have guns in my house and my girls know how to use them safely.
That is the key. They understand the safety rules and trigger discipline and they understand that people are responsible for bad actions not inanimate objects like guns. They are also aware of their rights and responsibilities in a free nation and it is my hope they have the opportunities I have had.
What a bunch of panty wetting babies you all are judging by the comments here. Maybe you should gang up and go take the guns away from these crazy people if you think they shouldn't have them.

Paul W, Your comment that these folks should be disarmed, is pretty statistly scary. When you give government the right to deliberate who should and should have a gun based on their beliefs, as opposed to their actions, you are getting close to government actions employed under fascism, communism, and any other form of dictatorship. Good job for your typical leftist fascism. These people have a right to do what they are doing, period; a well armed militia.... as the constitution goes.

I like how the guy in the video is overweight. I wonder if him and his wife know that obesity is one of the issues driving up health care costs. Hopefully he can shoot the long range rifle well because he sure isn't chasing after anyone. You should be fined if your a certain amount of pounds overweight. Hey kids don't learn about being healthy, pick up a gun instead and get ready to take out the crazy black lead obama administration. They want to make health care affordable. How dare they do that! Of course he doesn't want health care reform. He's overweight! Doesn't care about health issues. Peace is a very rare thing world wide. I look up to people who take action through community service. These people like to talk about our four father's and what america stands for. The four fathers cared about white people and slaughtering native americans. My america stands for change and peace. Not putting a gun in someone's face. Your more likely to get shot holding a gun than not having one during alot of crimes. Stand down soldier and hit the gym. They wouldn't accept you in the military so you joined a second rate militia.

I’m sad to see children holding guns when they can be holding books. What are these parents teaching their children…. how to hold a gun and shoot people? This is irresponsible. And then we are asking to ourselves why are shootings happening in high schools and colleges. Sad times in America!

This is beyond scary. This screw ball, in yesterdays segment, made a comment about taking an oath to the constitution and not an oath to the president. Well I beg to differ. When taking the oath for enlistment in the US military you also take an oath to obey the order of the President of the United States. I would question this guys service....

I want some of you liberals to tell me exactly where race come into this?? There is not 1 mention of race by the millitia. It seems that the only racism here is by liberal constantly spouting how nobody can disagree with Obama without being racist. Next let me expalin to you. That millitia is EXACT for us. Its not soley to support the army. Its to keep the govt from becomming facist. That is what they were always intened for. Next people forget how this country was founded. Also how thoes wacky evil millitias helped keep the Nazi's at bay. amond other stries of MILLITIA protecting their country. Its because of people like US that the govt isnt facist. You looney libs will protect a gangbanger, but thoes evil whites who know how to use guns and do so safely, are bad? The time WILL come when you that us for defending America against itself!! GOD BLESS THE MILLITIAS!!!!

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. -Thomas Jefferson-

Who are these people protecting us against? People with opinions that match Pascal, Jean-Loius, Craig Beitzel, Franco, Al, Georgia McFadden, The Man, David Nelson, ed, Aracelio Cruz, Henya CA, lexie, and Manny the Manhandler. If fourteen people with these attitudes were placed into important government possitions, do you beleive our nation would not sink into tyrrany?
Of the people that I know that were raised in homes with firearms were taught to respect them and how to safely handle them. We were also taught to respect human life and the rights of other people. The kids that are killing kids have not been taught to respect others or their rights. Patricia asks if they are fit to be parents, are they less fit than the parents that do not teach their kids to respect anybody's right to life or property? Do the militia kids have both of their parents at home? Which parents are supporting their family and which holds its hand out to the government for subsistance ( not assistance)?
Ignorant because they have so many kids? How many prominent Americans have come from large families? The people of New Orleans had the same right to help themselves as did the people that were flooded out in Iowa. In Iowa they helped themselves instead of standing around with their hands out. Unfortunately, all media sources are more concerned with stories they can sensationalize, causing uproar among the bleating sheep and selling story lines. These militias have been around far longer than Obama, or even Bush. Some of the folks above express that our government will never turn tyrrannical, yet the say Bush walked all over our constitution? Our government won't turn on us all at once, it will happen a little at a time. Our standing millitary both active duty and gaurd are government controlled, if our government turns tyrrannical the millitary goes with them, that is why there is a jusitification for civilian millitias. Yes we should respect our commander in cheif, but that trust must be reciprocal. We return to the bleating sheep mentallity if we accept everything he says and does simply because of his position. Too much good in America for such evil? Not so, do some research and see how strong of a foothold the Islamic state is gaining in America. Its real and kept out of media. Get rid of guns because of suicide? Lets get rid of cliffs and bridges and sharp instruments, too? Did Kain and Abel have a gun fight? The armed citizenship was a major deterrant to soviet invasion, Krypke has some interesting points that many of you should ponder. I don't care where you are from or any part of your background, heritage, or whatever, do some research, you will be surprised what you will learn. It just may not match what your politicians and the biased media have been feeding you. Stop being bleating sheep, learn enough to form your own opinion!!

"This country is ruled by majority rule". WRONG.
We are a Constitutional Republic. That means we have a set of rules that govern our country. If the government ignores these rules the citizens have a right to fight to over throw the government. That's why we have guns.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

LOL!! I love seeing quotes like these used to support the existence of fringe groups like the Michigan Militia simply because they include the use of "Militia" in their names. How many of you gun-toting, back-slapping, glad-handing conspiracy theorists missed the second and third words of the above quote, "well" and "regulated?"

Pfft. Folks like the family profiled in this piece exist all over the nation. I don't see where they are any more 'special' than the next batch of right-wing extremists spouting the over-worn "If yer not with us, yer agin us" garbage. The fact that the main protagonist is upset that the majority does not seem to be buying what his side is selling is proof of that.

The only thing that seems to set this family apart from others is the fact that they have access to one of the most envied health insurance plans in the country. Kinda hypocritical to say that you're not in favor of extending coverage to the least among us, isn't it? That, and I'd be wary of working with a guy in the US Postal Service that owned that many guns. I still remember the Post Office shootings here in Michigan... we don't need any more, thx.

this militia lunatic who is angry at health care reform, that he thinks is unconstitunional, should give up his health care privilages that are given to him from the post office so that he can go out and try to get insurance on his own like i have to. i guarantee you no one will cover him after he tells them that he is part of a militia that practices warfare on the weekends with his kids. then we will see how supportive he will be about health care reform and by the looks of his weight its a definite pre existing condition thats going to be ridered in his policy if he does get accepted. morons like him make this country look bad to our friends in the rest of the world they see us as ignorant hillbillies, racist fanatics who think taht the government is allways conspiring agaisnt them. it makes me laugh that he believes he is normal by the way he thinks and that everyone who thinks differently is unamerican. please tell him to shut the f@#* up. he only feels like a macho man with his guns take that away and his nothing but a coward.put your gun down and get in the ring with me malaka!!!!!!!!!

Why does it have to be one extreme or another? Reading these comments seems like people are either all for or all against. Think before you type people. Guns in the right hands and right education can be a positive thing for people and kids. At the same time, this situation doesn't exactly seem to be the right situation. The problem I see with these folks and with a lot of comments is that politics and guns shouldn't be the focus on this family, and the two together are a dangerous combo

These militias seem to be running on the notion that the government is out to get them. The culture of fear in the US is laughable. The elected government is there to help you. Not every decision they make will be the best, but I would still like to believe that MOST elected officials love their country and try their best to enact beneficial policies.

These militias are probably nothing but a bunch of adults playing army. Though they should be watched closely because there is a fine line between one mans patriot and another’s extremist.

No nation can invade the US. The US is not controlled by Hezbollah or crazy Kim. Therefore the threat of the government or someone else coming in to take over your trailer is absurd. Teach your kids how to read and write and to be good members of society. Teaching gun safety is one thing, but no child should be around people with m16’s..this isn’t Afghanistan people.

These people are insane and dangerous. They have an insane dream of death and war and somehow believe that they can defeat the US Army in a stand up battle....they are playing a fantasy game that may become real ending in their death and the death of innocent others. These militia folks should be arrested and disarmed.

I don't have a problem with some middle aged, out of shape, deluded guys running around in the woods playing sholdier once in a while. What I find distrurbing is the notion some people have of potentially coming to a point where the only way we solve our dissagreements as a people is with guns. That's insane! Did we forget what the civil war cost this nation?
All people espousing extreme ideologies, whether left or right are equally responsible for ratcheting up the heat in discussions of this sort. I don't care to have anyone's opinion shoved down my thoat, but neither am I going to get a gun and shoot them down. Without some tolerance and respect for the beliefs of others ("conservative" or "liberal") a nation of 300+ million can't hold together.
You who think that the "other" side is 100% wrong need to reexamine your opinions.

Yes, you can own guns in this country, fine. I have never and probably will never own one. They are for killing things and I haven't had a reason to kill anything. If I owned one, I'd probably be in jail. Why own something you are not going to use. I don't need a gun to protect myself. I can kill someone several different ways and within seconds with my hands. If someone points a gun at me, they better plan on killing me, or they will be dead. And if they kill me, fine, everyone of us will die, that's guaranteed. Any militia taking on the government is seriously funny. Have you noticed we have the most advanced military in the world? I'm sure they will be laughing as they drop cluster bombs on your little outpost from 30,000 feet as you shoot at them with your hunting rifles, you treasonous idiots. This country is run by majority rule. If you happen to be in the minority opposed to what the majority wants, it's too bad. In spite of what the Fox's and AM radio will have you believe, the majority of this country voted for the President and want Universal Health Care.

hate to say it sarah, but even without the hunting experience he would have killed himself anyway if he was that much of a coward. There is nothing wrong with guns. I was taught how to use a gun at a young age, and although I do not own one I believe everyone should be educated.
IT IS NOT TREASON IF YOU OWN OR USE A GUN. consitution had said that you have the right to bear arms both foreign and DOMESTIC. It was placed there in the extreme instance that our government has become corrupt. Owning mulitple guns and actively participating in gun activities such as hunting DOES NOT MAKE YOU A TERRORIST. Most of you don't even know what a terrorist or terrorism is. terrorism is a person or group of people who perform violent or destructive acts in order to control or eliminate a population for their own needs and purpose. Do not judge someone or something because you aren't familliar with it. And labeling it a 'militia' is ridiculous just because a family owns guns, just makes you an ignorant fool.

If you want to use guns and dress in camo join the army. I'm a left wing Canadian who can understand the need for guns, but adult children, I have no time for. If you want to play army, JOIN THE DAMM ARMY. JC, these people are a joke. You think the US Army, let alone any other national force would be even remotely afraid of this fat postal worker. Give, me, a, break. Instead of shooting, I think these parents should do a little more educating.

The Greatest, let me repeat, GREATEST irony of these militia types, and most gun fetish nutjob Americans, is that they rail on the government and maintain that their right to bear arms is the safegaurd against tyrrany, yet are the EXACT SAME PEOPLE, who call dissenters, especially during the Bush saga, unpatriotic. These people don't have a leg to stand on and are some of the most spineless, ignorant human beings that evolution has unfortunately spared.

These militia people are scary as hell. At the moment, they're just a small lunatic fringe, but if the uneducated, extremist nutjobs keep breeding like rabbits (8 kids!) and keep home schooling their kids so they never learn anything other than extremist crap, we could be heading for real trouble eventually. People spoiling for a fight will someday find a fight, and these people want to fight fellow Americans who don't share their nutty views.

There is no need for a militia in our country. They are at heart a violent people who worship guns and warfare. We have the strongest military in the world with a mission to protect the citizens of our country. We enjoy an excellent police force with a similiar mission to serve and protect. It would seem the intent of an armed militia is criminal in nature. Their intent is hostile action against the civil government both local and federal. I agree with those who described them as an extremist group much like Al Qaida. Since we live in a free society we must tolerate these people until or if they commit violent crimes against our citizens. However, I worry for law enforcement officials who may die to protect our safety and freedoms. What can we do? Watch them, study them, and be prepared to stop them.

Nothing but sheep hoping for others to save your bacon at the first sign of trouble. Lol, reading these comments makes me laugh.

Slackman – Trying to say that these guys would be labeled as a gang if they were black and arrested but since their white it's ok is a hoot. Let's use some basic logic, are any of these guys breaking the law by owning guns in the towns/cities where they live? Are they committing crimes with the guns that they own, murders/robberies as gangs do? Are crimes being committed by this group that are going unpunished because of their race? Is this militia only for white people? Last time I checked, there are just as many "gangs" of other races besides black so go play the race card somewhere else because your logic doesn't exactly make sense.

Sara- Sorry to hear about your ex, seriously. The truth of the matter is though is that your ex-husband taking his own life with a gun was probably just out of convenience. If someone is serious about committing suicide they are plenty of ways to go about it. The analogy you use is kind of like saying my ex was a butcher and he used a knife to cut his wrists.....if he had never been a butcher it wouldn't have happened.

Why is that militias are always cast into such a dark light....

Why is it that the News never quantifies it with the fact that US title 10, Section 13 of the US military code identifies in SubSection 2 that "all men who are citizens of the US or intened to be citizens and are not in Military service or part of the National Guard from the ages 19 to 45 are Part of the UnOrganized Malitia of the United States"

read it for you;re self "http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/10C13.txt"

Our founding fathers had intened that all citizens would be part of a ready defense force that could be called up if the country needed them. that officers of the Active Military would be placed into command positions in the militia and that these militias would be activated by local authority; be it Police, Mayors, or Goveners of the State.

the men and women who still hold true to this belife are patriots who have read and understand the Constitution and the US Code. Why is that evertime we have a Federal Government that wants to excert it's will over people that the militia issue always comes up.

there are 80 million gun owners in America and everyone of them wether they know it or not is part of the UnOrganized militia becuase they are prepared to defend this country agianst all threats Foreign and Domestic.

Put the focus back on the Islamic terrorist and our Out of Control Federal Government Spending and stop messing with GOD fearing Americans.

Just back from the shooting range. Blew through couple boxes of 9mm shells with my Glock and found this article and posts. Very interesting. I think there are more whack jobs and racist making comments here than in any militia group.

Several folks are spot on. Militia groups have been around since the beginning of our county, if you support them or not. Haven't heard of any take-over attempts yet though.

"White Trash"?? What kind of racist comments are those? Perhaps one of the white trash commenters could define that for us? Are white trash different from yellow, brown, or red trash??

Comparing militia groups to Al Quida? What planet are you from?

    These posts are pure entertainment.

One thing to remember about early American history – It was the militias that won our freedom from the monarchy of Great Britian. There are two sides to every story. While I seriously disagree with the violence fostered by some groups, stop and consider the whole picture. I wonder how many "gang bangers" would have more respect for society and life if a father had taken them out and educated them on proper use and respect for fire arms.

and another thing i forgot to say.. If you people think that taking the guns from law abiding citizens of this great country think it's going to make you, your family, or your community any safer could not be any more wrong. You are DEAD wrong. The people that want to have guns will ALWAYS have them. That means that your bloods and crips will always have them. Your everyday idiot that wants to rob a convenient store will find a way to get them. We're better off letting people keep and bear arms to protect themselves. Look at prohibition, that lead to organized crime and people still got alcohol right? If you think taking guns away will accomplish anything.. Move to Canada or something and get out of our great country.

@ MT: the reason he's against health care reform while being in a government managed health care program is simple. I know because I am also on a government managed health care program. I don't pay a penny for my health care. And you get exactly what you pay for.

Any government employee (like myself) will tell you what all these right-wing "wackos" have been saying from the very beginning. The government is only good at breaking things. That's it. What's the fastest way to break the health care system worse than it currently is? Let the government at it.

I'll also state very clearly that all of these people claiming that this fellow is "hateful" are drawing wild suppositions about a man that they don't know based on no real evidence. We call that "prejudice". It's amazing to me that all a white man has to do to is enjoy owning and discharging firearms for him to be considered hateful.

I'd also like to add that there is nothing wrong with educating children about the safe handling and operation of firearms. it is an exercise in discipline, and one for which the consequences can be most horrifying. If the proper care is taken to impress upon the child that these are not toys and to be used only under direct adult supervision, then that caution will translate into other facets of life. Which is not to say that I agree with the guns being unlocked. That's not necessarily a good thing.

Also, I'm pretty sure I read a comment at the top asking what the difference is between militias and the KKK. Seriously? The person who wrote that should probably spend some time trying to find the answer him/herself instead of posting pedantic, wannabe-Socratic non sequiturs and hoping that someone finds a point there. But since that fellow cannot be bothered to do a quick Wikipedia search, allow me to clear that silly question up: The KKK was/is a quasi-terrorist organization whose purpose (according to themselves) is to protect the rights and further the interest of white Americans. To them, the ends always justify the means. They're dangerous, bigoted racists. They're also criminals.

In contrast, the Militias (although primarily white Americans) are there to preserve the rights of ALL Americans, regardless of race, religion or sexual preference (the KKK would not do that), even from its own government should the need arise. Militias are nothing more than organized popular resistance to an occupying power, be it a foreign government or our own turned against it's people.

I'm tired of people saying Obama wants to take their guns away. The president has made no actions to do so, and has even allowed concealed loaded weapons in state parks.
I think these militas are retarded. I have been to Iraq twice for this country as well as helped disaster victims here at home. What GOOD have these militas done for our country ?? I've never heard of any of them going overseas to put their lives on the line or helped anyone in distress here at home. These are not the same militias from when our country was founded, those militas had a perpose for the common good.
I'm a white man and I just have to say I am so tired of the passive racism in this country. People in this country are afraid to admit they don't like Obama because he is black. I've heard too many people in the past couple of years tell me one day that they arn't racist, but their recent actions and words tell me the truth. It reminds me of all the people who go to church and say they believe in God, but don't event try to live life by example.

Just what do these militia groups think they could actually do? What "training" do they actually give themselves. From the pictures shown here these people do not have the proper physical conditioning to do what is actually expected of someone in battle.
First they would never be able to defend this country against a foreign invasion. Their weaponry is substandard and their training I have no doubt is well below what we (the military) would consider an acceptable level. These militias do not have the means nor the ability to carry out a full fledged firefight. Firefights that last 12 hours where you expend 12 30 round clips in just 30 minutes, and these are not spray and pray tactics. This rate of fire boils down to 1 round every 5 seconds. These militias would pose more of a threat to our military and civilian population with their lack of discipline and training. They probably would be incapable of identifying friendly forces from hostile forces and that means killing the wrong people.

Next problem... Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC). These people are unlawful combatants and could be detained by enemy forces, taken to their homeland and tried as criminals... because that is what they are. They would not be granted POW status because under LOAC they are not lawful combatants. Think of all the problems that creates for the government and them. They would likely be tried for murder and executed.

If the US government ever did anything to get Militias stirred up and they actually tried to overthrow the goverment, the goverment would use the US military to defend our governement. We took an oath to defend against all enemies foreign and domestic, and that includes YOU.

At the end of the day, while part of their idea sounds noble they suffer from monumental delusions of granduer. they really have no idea what it takes to win a single firefight, let alone a war. They are far beyond ill prepared.

How many of you complaing about the crazy bigot rednecks have actually served this nation in the military? How many of you have been in a situation where it was you or them? How many of you have had something or someone taken by a crazy person with a weapon? I strongly believe in our right to protect ourselves and our family and if you are going to have guns in your home you should teach your child about gun safety. Having a gun around does not mean your child is going to shoot themselve or others unless you are stupid and leave them out without teaching your children about them. My husband has rifles, shot guns, pistols and I have a shot gun. My daughter will have a shot gun and she will learn how to defend herself accordingly, maybe even learn to hunt if she decides she wants to. I do not think these people are doing anything wrong in regards to teaching their children how to use guns. How many times have you seen the story on the news about the child who picked up a gun and shot themselves or someone else. Where did they find it? Locked up in the gun safe? Holstered with dad? Out with supervision at a target practice learning to shoot it safely? No it is because some lazy person left it where they could reach it and did not teach them gun safety. Cheesy but true....guns don't kill people, ignorant people with guns/knifes/vehicles/bricks/pipes/etc. kill people.

    Here's another Liberal Democrat anomoly..
We are not suppose to profile others and assume just because you associated with something you MUST have a particular bad character trait. I short, we are not suppose to profile Blacks, Muslims, Gays, etc..yet if you are white and you like guns you instantly are prejudice and a KKK member. Hmmm. I can't really see were constitutionally garanteed guns and militias makes you a KLAN member. But you know best !!

For myself, I'll try not to draw any unsupported conclusions about Hollywood, Media, Wall Street, Criminals, Bankers, Education, Marriage ...

Americans are not particularly smart people. Let's see:

They considered a human failure as a vice presidential candidate.
Hoard guns, constant sense of fear instilled by their media.
    Believe in some fairytale Gods.
They are highly racist people with extreme views of the world.
Not particularly well educated on average.

I'll stay in Hong Kong, thank you very much.

In 2000, George Bush was handed the election by a SCOTUS vote that followed party lines, despite having lost the popular vote. These people see no harm in that. In 2008 a black candidate won both the popular vote and the electoral vote. To these people that is a tragedy.

Under the "Patriot Act" that Cheney had pushed through, the government unprecedented ability to spy on its citizens. the administration conducted illegal wiretapping of its citizens, and has been documented of rounding up people based on mere suspicion, holding them illegally, and in some cases either conducting 'enhanced interrogation' using methods we as a nation have in the past prosecuted for war crimes, or used 'rendition' to export these (often completely innocent) people to countries known for their torture methods. These "militia" members see nothing wrong with that.

The current admin seeks to try and get health care expanded to those who are too poor to otherwise afford it, and to end practices where people who have paid insurance premiums for years suddenly find themselves denied coverage when they finally need it. To these people, that is a travesty.

They call themselves 'Patriots" yet brag about being ready to take arms against Americans in an attempt to over throw a lawfully elected government that they disagree with.

    Too many contradictions.

First of all you ask what has Obama done to infringe on OUR RIGHTS? How about messing with the 2nd Amendment for starters!!!
    1. Back in 2004 when Obama was Senator of Illinois he supported banning hundreds of rifles and shotguns commonly used for hunting and sport fishing as well as all the rifle ammunition.
    2. He voted to allow reckless lawsuits designed to put the firearms industry out of buisness.
    3. He supports a mandated national registry of all firearms owners.
    4. He supported increasing taxes on firearms and ammunition by 500 percent (thats just ridiculous! )
BY THE WAY THESE ARE ALL FACTS!!!!!!
Second of all we all seem to forget too soon that this great nation was built by are four fathers by men wanting something better for themselves and this country. The men who sacrificed their lives for something they beleived in and something bigger than themselves "YOUR FREEDOM" which many of the American people take for granted. You people need to go back to your loser life and pick up a copy of the Constitution and do some homework. THIS COUNTRY WAS BUILT BY A MILITIA AND OUR FOUR FATHERS ARE PROBABLY TURNING IN THEIR GRAVES BY THE WAY OUR COUNTRY IS BEING TURNED INTO A COMMUNIST COUNTRY WITH THE NEXT HITLER!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have every right according to the Constitution to take back our country and frankly I'm glad there are people out there willing to sacrifice things for me the way our four fathers did 200 years ago. You shouldn't be afraid of the militia you should in brace it and feel safe. IGNORANCE IS BLISS FOR MOST APPARENTLY!!!!!!!!!!! THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THEIR HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way thats awsome that all 8 of his kids love guns (with adult supervision!) My ol' lady also just bought her first shotgun for hunting and me, her and our 6 year old daughter all safely shoot together as a family and our daughter can't wait to go hunting for the first time.

GOD BLESS OUR SOLDIERS AND THEIR FAMILYS FOR PUTTING THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR OUR FREEDOM.
GOD BLESS AMERICA-THE LAND OF THE FREE-HOME OF THE BRAVE!!!!!!

Funny, these folks call themselves patriots. But they are apparently just waiting for an excuse to attack and kill our fellow citizen-soldiers who serve voluntarily in the real military services. I think we call people like that "terrorists" today, since they are intent on attacking our way of life and killing Americans. Think Timothy McVeigh and David Koresh.

If you folks would take the time too look at their website you will seem that there is nothing racist in it. In fact they stated that they would like to meet with the President. I can't believe a racist would say that. In fact in there website they state that civil services, (ie fire and POLICE) should be well funded, not wastefully, but give them what they need, and as a people we need to support our government. They give a lot of advice on how to be prepared for a lot of disasters. Katrina displayed how it's important for families to be prepared, not necessarily with firearms, but food, water, and transportation. The goverment can't always be relied upon, we should cooperate with them, but don't rely on them.

Just because someone does not like obama's policies does NOT make them racist. However, someone calling someone else racist just because of race does make them racist (since their whole stance is based on race) unlike those of us that just oppose all the socialist policies Obama keeps coming up with (cap & trade, health care takeover, endless new government interventions – auto industry, housing market, financial market, .....)

    @Mr. Powell,

Your contention that we have never been invaded because we have guns is asinine.

We were invaded by the British during the War of 1812. Also historically the US is a difficult country to invade, because major powers would not be able mount a large enough fleet for an invasion.

Those of you who think guns kill people are absoulely idiots. If guns kill people then pencils misspell words right? You have got to be kidding me. It is our right given to us by our founding fathers to keep and bear arms to protect ourselves. Whoever asked "what are they preparing to protect us/them from?" well lets see, what happens if the war gets brought to our own land? You people that say this bad stuff about gun owners shouldn't expect us as gun owners to protect you; good luck with that if it ever happens, God forbid. And whoever said something about treason, to that I say, how was this country founded? Oh yeah by high treason by our founding fathers against Britian.. You all just need to shut it and lets us gun owners be. Si vis pacem para bellum. If you want my guns in the great words of Leonitas ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ!

    1) If writing has been replaced by typing in the 21st century, please, my fellow Americans, learn how to type, learn grammar, and learn how to spell. CNN provides you a spell-checking service on their comment boards.

    2) A militia's goal is not to overthrow government, but to protect their family and fellow citizens should government collapse. Whoever on this thread said that Martial Law exists to control citizens, not to protect them, is right.

    3) American's may own as many guns as they wish, as long as they meet the criteria. You must pass the proper background checks and acquire the necessary licenses needed to own or operate a firearm in your city or town. We also may allow our children to fire a gun, or any other weapon, at whatever age we deem fit. If a child is truly in a dangerous situation, social services would intervene. Given the popularity boom the Michigan Militia received from the Michael Moore documentary, as well as this article, I would like to believe the system has worked and these families have been visited. Granted, our system fails us daily. Should you choose to go outside the system to acquire firearms, be prepared to handle the consequences of your actions should get caught.

    4) If you don't like America, you have the right to speak up about it. You have the right to organize a demonstration or a protest, a festival or a business, to voice your opinions on a larger scale. You have the right to do anything you want, as long as it's within the boundaries defined in your state law books. Truth be told, you have the right to break the laws in your state, and the judge has the right to put you in jail if you were caught. One of the best things about America is our freedom. To say "there is no good in America" means you are blind and ignorant. My personal favorite freedom, our freedom to leave this country and find a better place to live if that's how we feel.

    5) We are all the result of our own actions. We elect the people in power. If society took time to educate itself, and actually practice what it preaches, it would learn that it does have the power to change the system. Our country has strayed so far from it's original design and the intent of it's founders, it almost seems the respectful thing to do is leave history as history and start anew. We are a different country today, yet we face similar problems. Your life will be happier if you educate yourself and realize the true situation you are in.

Grow or hunt your own food. Vote in every possible election. Attend city council meetings. Write your congressman. Keep an open mind. Be respectful of your fellow citizen. Change the Zeitgeist.

It's our right as a free person in a free country. The militias boom every time here in Michigan when the dems hold office. When clinton was president the militias expanded because he stomped on our rights. Michigan residents are serious about the rights our forefathers fought for and will fight for our rights just like Washington and our founding country men. Militias are here to protect us from enemies foreign or domestic. Militias understand our constitution. All Americans should understand this. Without the right to bare arms our country is weak. When everyone around you is familiar with warfare and realize that it is this very right that keeps other countries from invading our sovereignty, this is what keeps us safe. Once someone learns they can take something away what's to stop them from from doing it twice.

These Militias are patriots but would be seen as extremists when leadership fail s them. We are Government by our vote, Industry by our work banking by our banking and shrinking investments, We are the Academic by our knowledge and the application of that knowledge towards the betterment and wellness of the Peoples as a whole. WE ARE MILITARY BY OUR RIGHT TO PROTECT ALL THAT IS LOVED AND HELD SACRED. We are Religion by our spirituality and ethics. We are the Peoples with every right to be concerned with the current direction of leaderships.

What is it with libertarians? They don't trust government, or scientists, or intellectuals or anyone who know more than they do. George W demonstrated that it actually takes an intellect and education to be a competent president. My experience with libertarians is that they think they know it all but that's only because they don't think very deeply. The dumber people are the more heavily they are armed. Scary.

"I NEVER heard anyone say anything like this about people who were against Bush! " – Yeah but I never heard those against Bush saying they were stocking up on guns, ready for the call to fight against the government.

"There is nationwide orginized minority groups called the Crips and the Bloods and others that that have arsenals of firearms, sell dope, run postitution rings, commit drive by murders, murders for hire, intimidate entire areas of cities, influence elections, etc., etc., etc.. But they seem to be politically correct types and are to be accepted." – You have got to be kidding me if you really believe this nonsense.

And to those saying Constitution this, Constitution that, militia was considered essential blah blah.........remember that was all written over 220 years ago, in a different time and a different world. Who is the external enemy you think is going to invade the country that you will end up having to defend against?

"take a look at the UK and what's happened to it's citizens while living in a "nanny state" – well please do give us an example.

"At least we know where the milita stand instead of the sneaky liberal groups slowly chipping away at the constitution. I'd rather have someone honest and know where they stand, than most liberals who lie, and blow in the wind with whatever feeling they have that morning. They don't seem to want everything for free from the government, have the government take care of them, are willing to take responsibility for their actions, and don't seem to use the race card anytime they want to get things their way. So the question is who is the real wacko's!" – well with that paranoid posting, I would say you are.

It amuses me to see posts made by individuals like Jean Louis. At what point does the video delve into race at all? I am white and own several firearms. I teach my children responsible use of a firearm. Does that make me racist? Furthermore, does the mere mention of anti-Obama rhetoric make him racist? Consequently, if ANY american (regardless of their own race) is suspicious of the Obama administration, are they themselves now racist? Really Jean Louis, really...?

Now how many, just give me an average, races, and ethnic groups do you have in the militia. Just Caucasians I bet. I bet when you "good ol' boys get together you let slip a few "N-words" once in a while. You have nothing to do with the militia that was formed to start this country.... Also, Militias to my knowledge were used in Revolution, War of 1812, Texas Revolution, Mexican-American War and the Civil War, along with much of the fighting within, these time periods. Remember, the militias WERE the military. Most countries didnt have standing armies or they had small ones because it was too expensive to maintain. Militias have been used and viable source of defense since the first people settled down from nomads. This is still relivent today.

To those who think training kids the safety of guns is wrong, look at instances of Chicago. These kids were taught that guns were meant to kill those around you. To know and respect a gun for its power and finality will mean these kids wont play with guns. I grew up in a family of guns and was taught not to point a gun at a person, loaded or unloaded. I am also against obama and his ideas on how to run this country. I also own several guns and practice safety with them. The militia is there for people or governments to organize for themselves. The people or government are also there to control them when they get out of control.

Are these people directly effecting you? My assumption is no. Under this safe assumption why do you care? care what you are doing for yourself and what you do to improve your life. If this makes them feel good about themselves, good let them do it. I own guns for the safety of my home and sport shooting. You do not own any for the safety of yours. Its how different people were raised. The most un-american thing we can do is control if someone has or does not have guns. This country was built with a gun in one hand and pen in the other. We will continue to do so, some like it others do not and that is what is great about this country. We have the right to be different and express different views. If this family is truly having a negative effect on the safety of you or your family, then take it up with them. not an internet message board. Otherwise, let them be.

Yes it is legal to have that many guns. Why wouldn't it? As for having small children and owning guns it is also legal. Have you not studied in school? I am surprised to see such a question. As for letting the kids shoot at that young age it is perfectly legal. Why wouldn't it? Of course you would use common sense and highly supervise them but other than that it is not a big deal.

All this liberal indignation about Americans raising their children around guns.

Funny that these same liberals don't mutter a word when the Palestinians dress their children up with suicide belts and parade them in front of the world's media.

Wow - what a set of paranoiac rants. So, militias are full of patriots that at on one hand are willing to help the US government and on the other ready to take it down for getting out of control and infringing on their constitutional rights. How do these folks square with the fact that the state national guards are the official militias? Who decides when the constitutionally mandated institutions fail and we need to run to the gun shops and resist? When is some militia going to be given the "command" to go out and suppress ordinary civilians with whom they disagree? A lot of vitriol against "liberals" whomever they might be. When will they need to be suppressed by violence to save someone's concept of what America should be?

I was surprised to learn how many militia members there are in the Midwest and throughout Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. Also in southern states. I hadn't heard about Michigan, but they must be forming everywhere. The numbers are scary, but I have no problem believing the U.S. military would win any altercation between them and small bands of "homeland soldiers." Whether the military is in a dictator's hands (something very hard to imagine in this country) or a democratic government's, I think there would be no contest. The main harm coming from these people is in the raising of their children. We will have generations with the same nitwit beliefs.

How are these people any different than the militia in 1775 who decided they neede to be prepared just in case? How are they any different than the militia in 1776 who fought against a tyrannical government that would have kept them oppressed given the chance? These retorical questions need to be asked. I could ask many more.

You fancy yourselves 'patriots', you lose one presidential race to a non-white , and you say you want your country back, and it's going socialist. Ignorance and stupidity, coupled with hate is a deadly combination indeed. No matter how you cover up your intentions, or dress it up in patriotic rants, you just hate it that an african american is the sitting president. You're a bunch of cowards not coming out with your true cause. The election has revealed what majority of americans want, and it's not your brand of misguided version of so-called truth.

Well this is typical of the media.....find someone with 22 guns (I have 27 myself) that hates Obama and send America into a frenzy.....classic....I have ALL of mine in a safe, ammo in a separate safe and my sons do NOT have access.....I am not anti Obama or pro Obama....everyone needs to calm down Bush/Obama or whoever can't take us into the abyss.....cycles in the world and in the good ole USA happen and we will survive and thrive again....this is more hype and fear propaganda and it takes away from what we need to focus on.....creating jobs, promoting peace, and pursuing happiness.....OK off my soap box....I understand the frustration in America, my last paycheck was Halloween 2008.....do onto others.....

The number of guns in the household is not particularly alarming if the parents are responsible and keep them locked up and away from the children. Only a small percentage of gun owners can be described as dangerous. The bigger problem is no one knows which of the 80 million plus gun owners is going to snap some day.

The militia thing is another issue. People who go off in the woods and practice for war believe there is going to be one on our soil, between the people and the federal government. I hear them talking and worrying about it on occasion and frankly, I think they are nuts.

The first group of folks I'd play close attention to if I were a federal agency would be anyone belonging to a militia group. I own plenty of guns and use them under safe conditions-but there is no way I'm joining or associating with anyone who goes into the woods and plays war in their camo outfits.

People need to take the Political Correctness Sunglasses off and start dealing with Reality. Do your own research! Investigate for yourself! Do Not rely on an organization that judges what news you receive based on popularity or shock ratings! Only by making knowledgeable, researched and informed decisions can we restore this country to stability.
Take personal responsibility for your own success. Don't wait for anyone to rescue you. By working together, we, as a country can achieve wonderful things. Letting organizations, such as the "News" Networks keep us as a nation divided over petty issues only leads the nation down the road it is currently on. United We Stand. Divided We Fall. Lets see if a fair Network like CNN posts this????

I for one am grateful for the militias. They keep the true spirit of our Founding Fathers alive when all around us people advocate abrogation of our rights in favor of neo-socialism.

It's high time that the governed put the government on notice on who serves whom...and contrary to the jack-booted Left, it's not the citizens who serve at the pleasure of the government!

Like the people featured in this article, I fully intend to raise my children to understand that their leaders only have the power they LET them have. And yes, my children will also be schooled in the ways of many weapons and the lessons of history. Only through these means will the creeping erosion of our nation and our liberties be averted.

I can't stand it when people say, "Is that safe? Is it legal to have this many guns in a house with children? Someone should do something."
Mind your own buisiness, the last thing we need is more intervention by the government. What should someone do? Show up and take the kids? or the guns? Why. What gives them the right to do ANYTHING? The constitution gaurentees them that right to do that, no one should anything, except be glad these kids are outside doing something more constructive than playing video games and facebooking.

If this was a Muslim family instead of a Christian one, people would be outraged.

I don't think any child should grow up with that many guns or doing military exercises.

    Groups like this scare me.

We need gun control...and limits on the number of guns that can be held in families with children.

You know what tickles me? Those of you waxing rhapsodic about your inalienable human rights and Constitutional liberties... those of you spewing hatred and ignorance... those of you who claim to hold Bachelor's degrees and Master's degrees... you people cannot even spell! Your grammar is atrocious and your arguments weak.

Personally, I side BOTH with Obama and the militia. Our President is doing the best he can under the circumstances he inherited. I believe he has stretched himself into knots, trying to accommodate the viewpoints of every side. I know him to be a good man with good values and a wise head on his shoulders.

Yet, the militia DOES have a right to exist. They are preparing for an unforeseen eventuality. This is what militias do. To defend the rights and American ideals of the "every man" when and if the federal government abuses its power. I hardly think health care reform qualifies as a threat to our American way of life, however, as this well-trained family enjoys the incredible health care provided by our government.

Moderation and intelligence, people. Maybe a dictionary on occasion...

    Sara,

That's a shame, but surely it is obvious that someone who wishes to end their life will do so with or without a firearm. If you are going to try and ban anything that can be fatal, you are going to have a long struggle ahead.

I've looked into joining militias in my area. I see a lot of people on here calling these people "bigots, racists, uneducated, extremists, terrorists, mindless, ect." Well, I'm not a racist, or a bigot. I look at the persons character, not the color, sex, religion, ect. I'm also a college student, a non-terrorist, non-sheeple.

I think the people who are saying these things about these folks are the racists, bigots, uneducated terrorists. Your judging people you dont even know by one report. These people may have many reasons for doing this. I believe its the duty and responsiblity of the PEOPLE to own firearms and to protect this country from enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC! You don't need military training to be an effective fighting force. You can buy books that are issued by the military that teach you all this stuff.

To all of the people who have said bad things about these people:
Good luck in the future when a President that is elected that does destroy this country. You will be the first to complain about it, and these people we will be first to act. They are the Americans, the rest of you are just living here.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Who is "regulating" these Militias? Certainly people should be allowed to "keep and bear arms". In fact We the People are lapse in our Constitutional responsibilities, to aid our government and our fellow citizens, by not having a "well-regulated Militia".

But these folks are not regulated are they? Do they have the right to speak out? Of course. To gather and run "wargames"? Sure. But they are not the Militia guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. I'm sure that some are thinking that the National Guard is the Militia of today. I disagree, they are the active reserves of the National Military. A true Militia is made up of all Citizens, not a select few. We the People were entrusted by the "Framers" and we have failed. We've gone the lazy route, look at voter turnout and registration numbers. Blame this guy, blame that guy, but the Constitution was "ordained and established" to form a government "of the people, for the people and by the people". We have responsibilities and we've been lax in living up to them.

For all of you who are not alarmed at all by these "militia" activities, ask yourself what exactly these people are training FOR? To simply know how to use a gun? it's one thing to learn how to fire a weapon, and it's another to become so fanatical about your beliefs in how the country should be run, and so hateful of those who are currently in office that you "start your own military" and start by brainwashing your children, and give them an upbringing of paranoia combined with weapons. They look like they're fully prepared for combat......at age 6. And none of this sets off any alarms or red flags with you people?

There is nothing wrong with owning a weapon for self-defense or recreational purposes. People have the right to exercise whatever freedoms are given to them, however, making a statement to challenge or "prepare" for the "worst" against your own government (who establishes those rights) makes them dangerous individuals to deal with. Being in the service, i know this country has rights and laws some other countries do not have and some people don't realize how lucky they are to be here. It may not be the most "perfect" place but, its a place "we" can call home.

Patriots, extremists, conservatives, racists, pacifists, Christians, Muslims... do any of these labels make a difference. Individuals could be motivated by an array of self-interests none of which matters not as long as laws are obeyed. The right to bear arms is not contingent on personal motives or reasons, one simply has the right to purchase and bear weapons within the law. If reasons and motives are to be considerd, then thought policing is entirely different discussion... Labeling individuals is a poor excuse for not thinking. There are compelling arguments and logic on both sides of the issue, resorting to labeling is barely above childish name-calling.
