Editor's Note: On Wednesday’s American Morning, many shared various thoughts on the international disaster in Haiti, including hopes that the rebuilding efforts would bring a more positive future to the country, and provide opportunities for unemployed U.S. construction workers. Others were more concerned about the influx of refugees to the U.S., suggesting that refugees be housed at Guantanamo until they can be returned to Haiti.

  • Lonnie: In the midst of reporting on the poverty of Haiti, all news agencies that I have listened to over night have focused on the abject poverty of Haiti, but failed to point out that Haiti fought and won a war with Napoleon Bonaparte and as a result the west, American and England, refused to trade with Haiti thereby isolating it. It is my opinion that this is what contributed to the poverty of Haiti.
  • Gina: The Disaster in Haiti will be devastating But, as millions of unemployed America Construction Workers sit idle, they can be deployed to RE-BUILD Haiti & clean it Up. Of course the first thing is send massive amounts of food & medical supplies, but, Unemployed Americans if given some compensation, like making sure the mortgage gets paid back home would more then willing to rebuild the place back to code. If the monies come from all over, this can be done to Help Haitians & the vast unemployed American Construction Workers. If Obama & his Administration allow unemployed rather then our nasty Military complex, to rebuild Haiti, as our unemployed sit around looking for side jobs, it could save his Presidency.
  • Collin: Hurricane Ivan caused serious damage to Grenada. People died, economy suffered major strain but it was the turning point for Grenada. The island is now in a better position than it EVER was. Let’s Pray that this is the turning point for Haiti. If people died in Haiti for the betterment of the country/people/lifestyle then God be with them...Haiti was over populated...Port de Prince was designed to house 50,000 people but instead it houses between 2,000,000 – 3,000,000 persons. The country can afford nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing – 8/10 people living from less than $2 per day...and more babies are being born daily...when will it stop...when will the outside world realize the situation that these countries are in before they offer assistance...Its sad that blood must be shed in order for major assistance to be given...but its better late than never...i really think this is Haiti’s Turning point. I see progress for Haiti in the near future.
  • Dj-pa: one thing i pray for is all those homeless Haitians do not end up on boats headed for the states.. Let them stay at Gitmo until they get back.

As the U.S. and other countries prepare to send aid to the disaster-stricken country of Haiti, how do you feel about the potential influx of refugees to the U.S.? Should they be housed at Guantanamo and returned to Haiti when the crisis is over? How should the U.S. and other countries be involved in Haiti’s rebuilding process?

As discussion of banker bonuses continues, some defended Goldman Sachs for its excellence, and believed other banking institutions responsible for the financial disaster should be admonished. Others were not so kind and called for the “destruction” of the organization.

  • Jackie: Why do you pick on Goldman Sachs? A bank that didn't need bail out money, a bank that has historically treated its clients very well, has always had long term goals when it makes business decisions (what you want), has a strong ethical team- oriented culture, and has treated its employees well. Why don't you pick on JPM....f you are jealous/upset at banks doing well.. they are. And they are a retail bank which should be making consumer and business loans which GS doesn't do (not their business) which is critical to our economy getting better and the govt money was for. And JPM who cleverly took advantage of the govt and got Bear Stearns with support of the govt! It's amazing! And why not focus on the other banks that really screwed up. But no its GS you need to flash. It feels like you are the people magazine of news these days.... stop picking on an outstanding firm for being an outstanding firm and focus on banks that were actually more involved in causing the fin. crisis. Honestly CNN, not impressive. You are playing to the public/not doing good news reporting. Walter Cronkite would be disappointed.
  • Gina: If ever a Company that needs to be destroyed is Goldman Sachs.....the One entity that is 75% responsible for DECEPTIVE Practices...... where Honesty is thrown out the Door when you get Hired there.... FACT. There is NO HONESTY in that Company they would cut your throat in a heart beat, along with CITI-BANK J.P.Morgan Chase & BoA....the fall of America's economy along with the whores of our Congress who slept with them.

What do you think of Goldman Sachs? Is the organization responsible for the banking disaster last year, or is it cumulative responsibility of all financial institutions?

On the issue of Hatit and rebuilding that country. We have the highest unemployment rate in the Construction industry on record. We should send our unemployed construction workers to rebuild. We dont need to pay them prevailing wages either. I can tell you that my husband has been out of work for a year we live in Arizona. This man has worked since he was 13 and there is nothing here. We would welcome the opportunity to sleep in a tent , no running water ,J jons, just to be able to keep our home and put food on the table. Come on OBAMA listen up!!

I agree with you Bill. Just as the body of humanity will be pulled together so to will that body of doctor form to deal with a global patient. Dr. Gupta would be a good candidate to over see that formation would he not considering his position within Media which over sees it all to begin with.

Gangrene is major cause of death in some of these people. Why do they not use the treatment of maggots to destroy this? I read quite a few articles that this is effective?

    Mr. Gupta question asked.

In this coverage, where are any animals and birds? Are they gone? Did they ever live there. When did they leave? I have not seen any animals at all in all this coverage.

I certainly agree with Bill, Dr. Gupta is a world hero. He should be acclaimed next to Mother Terasa for sainthood.

What a wonderful world it would be if everyone thought and took charge like him. Such intellect and such control over such a horrific situation.

On the other side of the coin of the BIG PICTURE, the "Not so informed" Glen Beck, during his show few minutes ago, blamed SUV's for the earthquake. What a revelation for all the scientists of the world. First he says global warming is conspiracy, then blames SUV's. HUH?

As I watch the drama unfold in Haiti, I am humbled by the effort that Dr Sanjay Gupta is doing in Haiti. Dr Gupta needs to be added to the hero list. Dr Gupta is a hero in every sense of the word.

Also I would think that we would instead of dismissing due to lack of experience the native Haitians who have been doing what they can ,we should surely grab them up to talk and communicate with the people there . I am sure speaking from brother , there may be more attention payed to the help that is very much needed from them there selfs. With that said. Who is taking the time to include and teach them rescue, subsistence. This will be our mistake, again.

I am very impressed by the relief efforts being made by our country for the people of Haiti. But, where was the relief after Hurricane Katrina for New Orleans and the Mississippi coast? The initial and current lack of response to such a natural disaster as Katrina continues to be a dark space in my mind. Unable to continue to watch the televised reports, five days after Katrina my wife and I performed our own relief effort. We rented a trailer, filled it at our own expense with water and supplies and drove as far as Pass Christian on the Mississippi coast. People came out of the woodwork for supplies. There was still no FEMA, no Red Cross, no Salvation Army, no military! Five days after Katrina, our own country was just watching television.

Wall Street CEO's give new meaning to the phrase " 'Bull' Market", (to expand on John's inference on the show today after the story covering the Goldman-Sachs CEO comments.)

14 JAN 2010: YOU REPORT THAT CALIFORNIA IS SENDING THEIR ELITE SEARCH AND RESCUE SQUADS TO HAITI, AMONG OTHER ELITE UNITS. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF, GOD FORBID, CALIFORNIA (HOME OF THE EARTHQUAKE) HAD AN EARTHQUAKE OR OTHER NATURAL DISASTER ?? ALL OF OUR ELITE UNITS WOULD BE UNAVAILABLE TO ASSIST OUR OWN CITIZENS...

I think it will all be resolved in short order. If your wondering how well we keep our books understand you do not see out your eyes by yourself. Others monitor your words, actions and even your thoughts. When those of Goldman Sachs are brought forward their books better match ours or consequences will follow.

I would think that everybody in Haiti should stay and help the country get through this tragedy. I don't think anybody should be allowed to leave the country. All the people there should be doing whatever they can to help the country! I think that if the Haitian people want to leave they should be held at gitmo until they offer themselves to help with rescue and recovery and clean up. Then help with the rebuilding of their country otherwise they show no care for all the help they are receiving and are only caring for themselves when they should be caring for their own country!
