Is Obama's stimulus working?

Editor's Note: All week, CNN examines the stimulus and looks at one of the greatest areas of concern for Americans: the economy. Tuesday on American Morning, we'll show you some of the good news from the stimulus money. One family says they have food on their table because of it.

We're taking a hard look at how your tax dollars are being spent, who they're helping, and who has abused the program. A new CNN poll says most Americans now oppose the stimulus. And as President Obama starts his second year in office, unemployment is in double digits.

So is the stimulus working? We asked Chrystia Freeland of the "Financial Times" and economic analyst Lakshman Achuthan on Monday's American Morning.

iReport: Signs of the economic times
We want to see the signs of the economic recession near you. Is your favorite store closing? Are foreclosure notices filling up your street? Is anyone in your neighborhood trying innovative ways to find work? Share your photos and video of the economy around you. Share your story

As I sit here at my computer listening to all this bs being thrown around. I am hard pressed to understand that everyone is all over our pres. and everything is his fault, has everyone forgot how we got into this mess to start with and the promise that the republicans made at the onset of our pres. term. They vowed not to let him get healthcare passed along with any thing he might try to do for this country. The supreme court has now turned the leaches loose to buy up all the republicans they want to keep stealing from this great country. How much money do you think cheney and his boys made by starting the Iraq war which there was truly not a reason for us to have ever been in that mess. I just wonder how much george jr. and his oil buddies stole from us before he got out of office. I am truly appalled at the idea these people out there who are electing republicans, to get things right (mass.) comes to mind, well when they find out that it is going to get a lot worse while the republicans keep filling their pockets with our money. How about the gentleman who explained the other day how the poor will continue to breed like animals as long as they are getting help to survive, and I would bet that is the mind thought of a high percentage of the republicans. This will probaly be pulled because my opinion of CNN is they have their noses so far up the republicans backside and have hated the thought that a young intelligent black man was elected , so don't tell me that this place is not very slanted in it's reporting. I don't remember all this bashing when those republicans tried everything they could to ruin this country so they could get all they could out of the poor working class. Has anybody checked to see who is spending all this money on pork.

If the stimulus is working where are the jobs. Obama promised that if the stimulus was passed, unemployment would not go above 8%. It has been over 10% for months now and first time unemployment claims are still rising. How can anyone even think it is working. When you spend a trillion dollars on pork projects, you might get a small, short term bump in the economy, but nothing that will bring down unemployment rates or drive GDP growth. You need businesses to do that, and the only thing Obama has done is vilify business and make them the enemy.

Obama is throwing good money at the wrong places, at the wrong people for the wrong reasons. That's why the stimulus did not work to create jobs, because it was not aiming at creating jobs. Look around, some cities are laying off city workers. Just few days ago Tulsa, Oklahoma let go many city employee. Can you tell me the stimulus is working when a strong economy state like Oklahoma has jobs problem of its second largest city. The Administration is not knowledgeable in Business nor is Competent in spending taxpayers' money. That is why there are no jobs for American, thanks to everyday low price, manufacturing jobs are gone to the east. What happen to MADE IN USA.

Good Morning Guys. Hope your having fun with the Stimulus Bill. Rob!
Enjoy. I'm sure it's a great sight to see.

You know, I keep thinking how the world was coming to an end, as far as the world economics is concerned. People were watching their 401K's being wiped out. Gas was ridiculously high. Fighting wars on so many fronts. And, the words Great Depression was being uttered out of the mouth of a president.

A year later, Democrats are scrambling, Republicans are chomping at the bit thinking they are going to put a stop to this Stimulus. Wild spending for pet projects.

It really amazes me of the hypocrisy that comes out of the mouths of those who ran the country into the ground.

Yes, I'm sure there are scavengers out there taking advantage of the Stimulus. Just as I am sure that they will confront Justice in do time.
But, if people would just think what the feeling in their gut was when everything was crashing they should be grateful that we are still standing. Oh, there is much damage for sure. And, if Americans could get out of their self-centered selfishness and come to realize that the problems facing our country stem from many years of abuse. An abuse of power by going to war in Iraq when it was; Who attacked us? Where did Bin Laden attack us from? And who is still send messages out to the world? That's Failure of people in power on a huge scale and you wonder why things are the way they are.

And I'm also quite sure that a lot of the stimulus is for veterans who gave their life and limbs for America. Get over your self-centered selfishness America, cause there still is a Great War to be fought and I will join in to bring that war to an end so that peace and prosperity will come back to America and the world.

Obama's and the democrats do as they always have done. They throw all kinds of money at a problem and if it doesn't work then the solution is to throw more taxpayers money at it. Then they want to raise taxes to get more money to throw at it. So much pork in the so called stimulus and little to no accountibility. Yep...change you can believe in.

  7. Not Hard to Figure Out

    The answer is NO!

Remember during the campaign?...the people rated their most important issues 1) The Economy 2) Ending the war and bring our tropps home

Obama must thought we said give our money to the banks and the auto companies, lag with bringing our troops home, and turning your back on the middle class.

What a joke, this has been nothing more than a slush fund to buy off politicians in order to destroy our great nation. This is truly Chicago Mafia style politics with no end in sight. I voted for this fool and now I can"t wait to vote him and all his cronies out.

I know – how awful of the current administration. In office one year and everything isn't fixed and magically back to good times. Some real reporting would be nice instead of trying to stir up news.

I think Obama should have given the responsible home owners the money to pay off there homes that way it would have helped main street & the banks & the banks would not have the power to raise interest rates or give big bonuses it would have helped everyone & then we might have had the guts to spend it does not look like ether party is trying to help its all politics to them who will get the vote I hope there all going to be in for a suprise

With all the jobs the Republicans are sending to China, I say the stimulus is working, without the stimulus we would have thirty percent unemployment.

This morning as every other monring I turned on CNN about 6:30 CST. The first report I hear is about the problems in the stimulus. Then the next report that I hear is about the problems in getting the right Doctors in Hati. This was the first time I thgouht about the public comments on negativity reporting. The issue is Hati is not very Politicial except for "Russ" and so much good has been done. There was last week that enought aircraft was not being cleared to land. What can be done if you have a small airport that typically handles 35 or so flights per day. The impression is not very good and really does not encourgage people to want to help. I really wonder which is the case are we doing more good or are we not being very competent. What I hear is the problems not the success.

The same issue on the stimulus. There was a stack of notebooks fo all the project s. What is the truth are jobs being saved or created or is it a farce? I know this one is very political one but are we better off with it or without it? These are the issues I want not just the problems. One could also do an investigative report on any company around and find probelms not just in the government but somethimes it seems we all expect the government to work better than companies. That may be the case companies work better but there is sure a lot of bad decsions in comapines also.

    Thanks for your show.
