20th Century Fox says James Cameron's 3D epic "Avatar" has officially sunk "Titanic, taking the crown for the biggest movie ever.
It has topped more than $1.84 billion so far, but some critics aren't too happy about that success. Our Jason Carroll has the report.

What is wrong with you who have to try to read something into everything you see? It's just a science fiction movie nothing more or less. Just enjoy!!!
Oh, by the way, why are there no fat Navi? Doesn't that make the film "anti-fatty?"
Avatar is really about the history–and future– of the white man. Does anyone really doubt that after raping and pillaging our way around this planet for the last 400 years that we would do the same on other planets if we could?
Anti-military, anti-big business: definitely a turn off. Pro-God, great special effects: definitely good. I put it in the same league as Transformers. All special effects, thin story. Movies like this are similar to flavored rice cakes: all flavor, no substance, but still yummy. Better than Titantic? Absolutely not.
Avatar speaks to the true essence of God and our relationship to him/her. I tells us that anyone can commune with God anytime and anywhere. It also speaks to us about God being everywhere and everything – plants, animals, earth, water, etc. It is for this that organized religion is so fearful of the movie. Organized religion needs people to be afraid of God so they will run to the church for its 'protection' from the angry God they preach about. Organized religion hardens hearts and closes minds – Avatar tells quite a different and true story.
I notice the conservative nut bags don't have one bad thing to say about films that glorify death and destruction. They only complain when a film condemns death and destruction. Telling, isn't it?
This film is HARDLY "anti-military" or "anti-faith" or any of the other rubbish it has been deemed. What it IS is a commentary on the colonial mentality – a reflection on what was done centuries ago to an innocent, undeserving population of people: the Native Americans. It is also a running commentary on what is still being done today, to similar populations of people who are no more guilty than they are uncivilized, or "savage." Colonel Quaritch's attitude portrays incredibly well the dangers of egocentrism and the colonial mentality. Any American who leaves that film unchanged or uninterrupted missed out on something huge. I am 19 years old and I left the theater feeling incredibly remorseful for the actions of European colonizers hundreds of years ago – actions I wasn't even a part of. Avatar gave me more of a sense of how the Native American people must have felt than any history class I've ever been in – in elementary, secondary, or university education settings.
Do the rest of us a favor and get over your proud, patriotic, egocentric selves and realize that IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT US.
I thought that conservatives were against Eminent domain – the right of the government to expropriate property for economic development. Now the conservatives are supporting big government, giving it the right to take peoples property without due consent. How ironic.
People who worry that their faith in GOD has somehow been damaged by this movie, had no faith in the first place. I feel sorry for them.
It's very tiring to listen to things in terms of left-wing or right-wing. One thing was certain..... There were a lot of political jabs from a "shock and awe" line to the use of Marines to further the evil corporate ambitions. Ok, I get it! Capitalism is bad; the military is bad; and the result is that the innocent will suffer.
Actually, I rather enjoyed the movie for the most part and happy that I paid to go see it. It is a movie from Hollywood so why wouldn't I not expect a liberal agenda?
It is in fact ant-military. These guys were clearly labeled Marines who were labeled "mercenaries".
I've done two tours in Iraq and I can tell you that the vast majority of us wanted nothing else than to help the local people we came in contact. The only thing that I did not like about the movie was the blatant stab demonization of people in the armed forces. That part was quite disappointing; however, it is in a long trend of soldier bashing from Hollywood. Again, one cannot expect any different.
Just my thought.
In other news, when you make something that makes a billion dollars, it may attract controversy. In this case, fairly dumb controversy. As it's been said, if you don't like what you see as the message, that may say more about you than about the movie.
Was just a movie. I think the conservatives are hurt because it portrays middle East war. US Military stealing Arab oil and Pandoraians represents terrorist.
This movie DOES stand for what the "conservatives" are saying!!! Man and his machines are raping nature of all her resourses. We are a part of nature. She can carry on just fine without us but we CANNOT live with out her!! I guess you are just acting like your bible tells "man his dominion over the earth/animals". This movie depicks just what we did to the "native/first Americans", taking over (what we assumed was their land) their culture, raping them, killing them...... They never claimed to "own" the land they lived WITH the land and understood the NATURAL LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE/NOT MAN'S SELFISH LAWS WRITTEN IN SOME BOOK. If you people can't see the historical similarities you are dommed to repeat it. We deserve everything we get back from her. "You are only borrowing her energy" from Avatar, Albert Einstein said "energy is never created nor distroyed, just changed". You are on borrowed time and our time is running out!!!
WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY DO YOU THINK OTHER COUNTRIES HATE/FEAR US!!!!!!!!!!!
Ultra Conservative, religious right, Alquaida, Taliban, Nazis, Hans, all the same, no difference? Ignorant! Can't enjoy a beautiful movie. Don't go see it you morans!
Avatar is not anti-military. It's anti-neoliberalism and anti-private contracting of the military. Totally different.
Does anyone remember how many innocent human lives are being buried every day in Haiti, some people would have you believe it was because they practised Voodoo . Men, Women and children have been hung , burned to death, and drowned because they were accused of being Witches . These negative terms used against Avatar is what this country hoped to leave behind , when we ventured into the 21st Century. Avatar is simple, we are the sky people and this is what we do . Just pick up a paper,a history book,or even the bible.you'll get the picture .
okay, to the chick who said that you wouldnt see this movie again cos theres marines killing other marines, watch the movie again idiot, there not working for the american government, yeah marines dont call themselves ex marines but thats what they are and there mercenaries. And what makes more sense, killing some one of your own nationality to save a whole world, or being a radical god seeker and killing millions of people just cos your greedy ass want your virgins.. if there should be any type of spiritual warship in this world it should be what they have on pandora..
Sure Avatar has sold tickets. The same people are going to see it 3,4, 5 or more times because they think it is real. I cannot recall anyone mistaking the Titanic movie for reality.
It's a movie for Entertainment purposes only. Enjoy the cinematography and acting. Take it for what it is and leave it be. i hate it when people try and over analyze everything to fit their tiny little view of the world.
Why can't people grow up. It's a visually stunning, ripping good show. Why do people always have to read things into movies/books/etc? Stop looking for deep meanings and just enjoy the storytelling.
Conservatives are nuts. Just because the religion of the avatars is not Cristian doesn't mean its anti-religion. As far as the anti-military....no one wants a military that kills indigenous people to take their resources OH WAIT our military does do that! Maybe conservatives don't like it because the shoe fits. How funny LOL Maybe if they weren't busy starting wars over oil they wouldn't feel so bad about it.
Are you kidding me! It really gets annoying when people make so much out of a movie. This sounds like what was going around for the Davinci code. It is just a movie and a well made one. Go to the movie, enjoy it, discuss it but for Gods sake it is a movie, entertainment! If the topic offends you then don't go and see it. Artists, and making movies is art, have the right to produce whatever they want...get over it. There are so many more important things going on in the world now, Haiti, health care, economy, wars etc. .....take you pick!
First of all, the Na'vi spirituality and culture was very closely modeled after Native Americans, and as history has proven, what the Humans did to the Na'vi in Avatar was the exact same thing that the European colonists did to the Native Americans. This movie was a reflection of history and the American way, since this country was founded by taking it from the Natives that lived here and killing them when they would not cooperate, and relocating them when they would not give up their land that was rightfully theirs'. That is a historical fact. On the issue of being anti-military, it was obvious that the movie was not anti-military, but it was anti-mercenary and anti-contractor since all the Marines in the movie were no longer in the military, but were contractors. This is also a historical reflection of what is actually going on right now, since it is also a fact that America operates the worlds largest Mercenary army in the former Blackwater, and all those contractors were former military that either could not hack it in the military or got out and became a mercenary for the pay check
Sometimes a good military is an "evil" must. However, religion is a lame vestige of a time when man was scared of the dark, ignorant and did not understand the natural world. It really is a part of the childhood of humanity. We need to grow up as a species and quit playing with imaginary friends.
peace out
Ok...First of all, IT"S JUST A MOVIE!
Second, who cares? It seems to me that the only people who ever care if something is anit-religious are the fundamentalist nutbags anyway.
ok- I get the impression that it's a good movie but it is just that-a movie-are republicans not getting that it's got great effects but it's a juiced up cartoon?these idiots know they're going the way of the dinosaur and are getting even more defensive and weird
It's a movie...and from a script standpoint...not even a good movie. VEry simple storyline that can be understood by 4th graders. Typical hollywood blockbuster fare.
Everything popular has a group of people that don't like it. Big whooptie-doo.
Obviously most people AREN'T distressed by this movie, else it wouldn't have grossed >$1.8 billion and counting (in $7-$20 dollar increments – do the math to assay total viewers). Methinks the "critics" are just desperate for attention in the face of a truly innovative entertainment juggernaut.
If religion is "the belief in a supernatural power accepted as the creator and governor of the world" as Webster's defines it, then Avatar is certainly not religious. Rather, it is about a race that has discovered how life really works, staying interconnected with all of existence, without the need to posit that there is an ethereal, supernatural god which they can never verify. In Avatar, their higher being is actually a real entity that can be interacted with; their assertion that this being exists is based on verifiable fact, not superstition or passed-down lore. So, I can see how this would be a perceived threat to those who prefer to stick with the faith-oriented traditions that they have inherited.
OMG people its a FREEKIN MOVIE... You all really need to get over yourselves. What has OUR world really come to?? A bunch of Winny people who have nothing better to do than b**ch about a fictional, Let me say that again "FICTIONAL" Movie! Either you like it or you don't if you dont then maybe you should not have watched it. Always gotta find something to rant and rave about..
I didn't watch avatar, but mainly because the trailers showed a picture of a half-human, half-animal creature. Sort of hollywood's way of subliminally conditioning everyone to accepting bestiality.
I for one think the blog title is stupid, as american's were too obsessed with opposition; pro-this, pro-that, this movie is trying to demonstrate how to challenge the status quo how to find some self-control, just because something isn't promoting the USMC or christian IDEALS doesn't mean its opposed to it, i found it deeply 'spiritual' which also has an incorrect connotation here, i found it ironic how people say this movie is anti-american when it is just a paralel of the true 'americans' and their exaltation of nature millenia before europeans colonized this continent. I loved this movie, and thought the special fx, audio, and acting were great, however people don't get this movie confused with a sci-fi, this is a fantasy movie, not sci-fi. maybe a little hybrid, but most surely not pure scifi
Conservatives ARE WRONG and they don't like to hear about.
Not at all "anti-faith!" The movie was full of faith, unless you can only tolerate one particular narrow kind of faith. Nor was it "anti-military." It was "anti-ruthless colonization at any cost."
I don't see what the big deal is. If people have a problem with what kind of hidden messages are in the moive then don't watch it, it's that simple.
So what if it was anti-military or anti-religion. Everyone is free to watch the movies they want to watch and come up with their own opinions on the subjects. Why is it that we need to stay away from these topics? If it wasn't for some of the movies in hollywood, most people would be very out of touch with what's really going on in the world.
In my opinion, the world would be a better place without the current established religions. I'd rather worship nature anyway...it's what allows me to live and thrive.
When are we going to start seeing movies against monetary systems? I think those should be abolished too!
Avatar is not anti-military. Those were not soldiers or sailors or airmen or marines...... they were Mercenaries. You know...... Blackwater types. They might have been ex-military and certainly "the colonel" had been but they sold out when they went to work for the big corporation. Jake Sully..... a marine veteran who did not want to stop being a marine actually show cases well the morality and personal ethics of those we call Marines. That is very pro-military. He was not killing his kind..... he was killing mercs. He was killing those intent on destroying a civilization.... a people....committing genocide.
Is this anti-corporation? You betcha. Given how big corporations have shown themselves to be without ethics, to have no shame, to have no conscience, to be all about greed and avarice as they chase the almighty dollar (or name your currency here) this movie does nothing but show real life but sanitizes it by moving it to another world. Nothing new really. Big business throughout the ages always ends up corrupt. As time goes on the impact is greater and greater. Just look at the financial meltdown that has had worldwide implications. Cameron just stuck it to the other worlds.
And do note that at the end the Big Corporation Mercs were being led away to a spaceship to be returned to earth. There were not reinforcements coming their way. That implies there was no government backing to this endeavor although there would be earthly repercussions when they returned.
Anti-religion? I guess if you are to the far right on any religious spectrum where the bible, the koran, the torah or name your religious document is something you take literally then sure you would view it as anti-religion. I personally have a more open view of God that allows for many manifestations. I don`t put limits on God.
Conservatives are so afraid. lol.
For years atheists have been discriminated against by the same religious wackos complaining about this movie. Personally, I am anti faith, but given the evil deeds done in the name of religion, I am not anti military. Religions causes many more problems than what it solves. It is time for us all to just stay home on Sunday and rest.
When I was raised, a conservative Christian wasn't allowed to go to movies.
Ex Baptist,
David
It's just a movie. But it has captured the attention of hundreds of millions – something large institutions have a high interest in. So when such a movie does not align with their views, they publish their thoughts in public to steer the attention towards their camp. It's a high profiled PR opportunity after all.
The second purpose may be damage control, in case their foundations start to sprout a leak.
This is typical.
It is only a movie!!! nothing more nothing less!!!!! like any other movie. what effects it might leave??? go back to other moveis and check out. movies are made to intertain. It is an entertaining business.
Everybody's politics and religion are the cause great wars on this planet. Only after we overcome such adolescent ideologies and dogma shall we achieve greatness as a race. Being human at this time leaves much to be desired. I am truly ashamed of all my fellow Americans. God has been nothing trouble for this planet ,and it's people. God is not dead. He is indeed alive and well. He exists to foster hate and contempt in all of us for each other. God lives and he created us in his image. People, IT'S A MOVIE! Get a life....
Don't these people have anything better to do? For Christ sake, IT IS A MOVIE. We all need to settle down, slow down and just enjoy life instead of trying to over think EVERYTHING. It is a GREAT movie. But, it is JUST A MOVIE PEOPLE!
Organized religion and it's tool the military have caused more death and suffering than anything else in this world including natural disasters. Ban them BOTH!!!!!!!
In the end we see that the loudest whiners for political correctness are, of course, those who accuse others. Conservatives thrive on making themselves out to be the victims, all while spreading lies, hate and violence on fellow americans, foreigners, other countries, whoever does not march to their call. Truly, we should pitty them.
I love that the conservatives hate this movie – and they should, it promotes a world where all life has value, not just unborn children. Also, it is incredibly spiritual, and not Christian – no wonder they have a problem. The good news is that this movie has already had an impact in promoting a philosophy that honors other cultures and races. Rock On Pandora!
The Movie Rocks! if you don't like it don't watch it.. enough said...
This movie was terrific and fictional! Leave it to religious, militaristic conservatives to complain. You don't have to see this movie, if it offends you. On the other hand, I have to drive past a billboard every morning with a giant Jesus and the headline,"before I formed you in the womb, I knew you". It should be against the law to spread lies, myth and superstition!
First, this was mercenaries not military, there was no government behind the scene, just a corporation that only looked out for its own profit margin. Actually I found the movie more like a retelling of the American Indian wars of the 19th century, except this time the Indians won. In the 19th century the military was used as a tool for those who wanted what was on the Indians' land, for gold on it (see Deadwood, SD which was illegally built on the Indian land), and they did everything they could to cause the conflict to get the military in there to do their dirty work. Conversatives need to check themselves, military explotation of others for the profit of private industry isn't a value they should adopt (see Iraq). Now grow the freak up, its only a freaking movie.
Actually, the movie could not be called anti-military. In the end the natives won by military means. They did not win by debate, or persuasion. Perhaps the moive is anti-technology?
I long for the days when you could punch stupid people in the face. Now its kind of dangerous because stupid people are everywhere..
Last I checked, there was no military in that movie – they were all paramilitary mercenaries.
Also, how can this movie be anti-faith? The connections the people and animals have with the moon are electro-chemical via the physical connectors the natives, animals, and plants are born with. How does that even imply "there is no god", or anything else remotely anti-faith?
If you are offended by a perceived "anti-faith" message in this movie, I have 3 suggestions:
1) Do not watch it again;
2) Watch a Narnia movie for entertainment;
3) Learn how to interpret the things around you in some sort of manner that does not scream "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME!" in your head.
To say that a movie as spiritually rich as Avatar is anti-religious only works if you're looking at religion from a narrow view of what qualifies as religiousness. If there is anything this movie does, it pays homage to the need for spirituality and thoughts of God in life – the problem is, of course, those commenting on this film are commenting from a narrow, monotheistic view. Hate to tell ya, folks, not everyone thinks that way either and maybe by broadening the films spiritual bounds, Cameron allowed it to be accessible to more people?
Thanks for proving, critics, just how narrow-minded you really are.
I aint never seent this film, but I seent Forrest Gump over 30 times. Maybe if them Hollywood Liberal types would make more films like Forrest Gump, that hamburger place I used to like wouldn't have closed.
God bless America and God Bless Charlie Daniels!
You know I love how conservatism is being generalized. Give me a break. CNN naming "Conservatives attack 'Avatar'" immediately getting everyone all mad. I am Conservative and I like the movie. This isn't a conservative or a liberal issue. I bet you could find an equal amount of people on both sides that dislike it for whatever reason.
Thank you again CNN for pitting this country into two factions to argue with each other again or stupid issues like this.
It's obvious to me that anyone who makes such claims paid no attention whatsoever to the movie.
If you don't like it don't go see it! IT IS A MOVIE for crying out load. I happened to like it. If you think about it it is the story of Pocahontas in the future. Open your minds people. Yes it is about nature and all the right wing conservatives out6 there should head the warning of what is happening to our precious EARTH.
I think Avatar, is just a 3D computer animation fairy tale, for guys with lotta shooting and for ladies with some cliche' (pardom my French) love story.
I feel sorry for the portrayal of Military guys as 'nut cases'. I work for the air force and know they are finest bunch. So I was the only guy in the movie theater who yelled 'Oh Yeah! Kick their asses! ' when the military leader guy said 'Lets kick those savages asses! ' (got elbowed by my girlfriend who was so in love for those aliens and 'science pukes'). Felt bad when he died, but it was understood from the beginning he will die gruesome death.
By the way : Do you know you drink Beer in movie theaters in Europe, it soooo much better to watch movie!
Anti-MERCENARY, not anti military.
Hmm... The biggest movie of all time is "anti-military and anti-faith." This should be an indicator of what most people really want in life. In fact, it is war and religion that cause most of the world's problems.
There are many of us who believe the world would be a better place without religion... that our only allegiance should be to Mother Earth. Many wars are caused by religion. You never hear about a war or terrorist attack initiated by atheists or agnostics.
Beliefs and superstitions are dangerous. I hear bible thumpers preach "it is written!" and then twist the meaning of scripture to suit their agendas. The scriptures were written by dozens of men in superstitious times — before anyone knew of an atom or galaxy. Those who take the scriptures literally refuse to think for themselves and pay no attention to the realities surrounding them.
I'm anti-war and anti-religion. Have a problem with that? I thought so.
I'm still trying to find out why people are having such a fit with a movie. It's just a movie, it's fiction. More proof that people can't differentiate Fiction and Reality
With claims like this, it looks like we need more anti-religion messages. Seriously, it's time for humanity to evolve and leave behind silly myths.
I recently read a quite funny article from a Catholic arch-bishop who was trying his arrogant best to cut down the "belief system" shown in Avatar. It was funny because it was exactly what you would expect from a petulant child trying to act grown up, while secretly being afraid of something they didn't understand. It was arrogant and fairly moronic statement from the Vatican. Par for the course.
I pity any aliens who choose to have dealings with human beings and have this arrogant cult of fools to talk with.
I would consider most true followers of the World's foremost religions to be anti-war. I seem to remember Pope John Paul making a declaration that the world's great monotheistic religions all taught peace and love of your fellow man and agreed on these princples. So for something to be accused of being both anti-religion and anti-military would seem to say more about the accuser's agenda in shaping our minds to believe that these two non-related entities are somehow one and the same. I cheered the Avatar theme if for nothing else than it makes us consider the fact that we Americans are still mortal and not invincible. Over confidence and moral superiority are the first steps on the road to defeat.
Conservatives are the world champs at finding boogeymen under the bed, even if they have to hallucinate them. Avatar is a story ... just a story. Where is it written that every story has to have a subliminal meaning? I thought Avatar was an outer space update of the story about the white men and the indians ... except in Avatar the indians won and the cavalry was vanquished. Only jerks who rejoice in the subjugation of indigenous peoples could object to a story line like that.
I don't know about anti-religion, but it certainly is anti-military and anti-big corporation! And what is wrong with that? Anyway, the world is pretty fed up with big corporations running the world, like big pharma, big oil, big industrial-military complex. And talking about religion, tell me one good thing religion has done for the world? (I'm not talking about local small town organizations) Heck, religions of one faith or another have been the root cause of most of the wars in the world. There has been religious persecution forever. So, when you say conservatives attack Avatar, I say screw the conservatives. Wake up and smell reality for a change!
How many times has the military been utilized in foreign intervention when there were financial assets or profits at stake? With the recent Supreme Court ruling, I see more interference by lobbying group-tainted senators and congressman to push for certain actions. The military is merely a pawn in these situations, with the 'big guys' pulling the strings.
Wow, attacked from the right for being anti-faith and anti-military. Attacked from the left for being pro-colonialist and perpetuating the "noble savage" stereotype.
Can't win, can it?
If it's not propaganda FOR them, then it's terrorism! Baawww!!! They're trying to oppress us with pretty movie!
Lord people get over it! You can't so much as write an idea on a napkin anymore without offending someone's delicate 'sensibilities'.
Even if it is- guess what- FREE SPEECH! Maybe go watch The Passion again.
People are just looking for things to be offended about.
Conservatives spend too much time digging for things to be mad about. 🙂 Just live your lives.
what? conservatives aren't allowed to attack anything associated with Fox, it's blasphemy or something.
It's amazing that this movie is getting all the publicity that it is. The movie itself was awesome in regards to special effects but the story is the same nothing more than a certain part of the human race killing and taking what doesn't belong to them something that's been done through time hence the word history for HIS STORY...Seems to me this is nothing more than a sci fi Roots....Okay now that I am done with that I will sit back and watch me get flamed..............
HA HA HA! Well, this is just another sign of how ignorant "conservatives" really are. Ridiculous!!
It did remind me of the Catholic Spanairds killing the people of the Americas when they first set foot in the Americas.
It's anti-technology and chemical warfare.. It could also be the first anti-use of humans as main characters in film and will lead up to anti-human films.. haha
C'mon, it's fun movie for families that love 3d stuff and play lots of xbox videogames.
People always looking for a reason to be offended. For goodness sake, it's a movie meant for entertainment! FICTION! Gah...
I don't understand the statement that this film is anti-religion. The Nav'i of Pandora (who are unarguably portrayed as the "good guys" of the film), are extremely religious! They are constantly praying and aware of the religious and spiritual ramifications of their actions. The "bad guys" of the film disrespect the religion of the Nav'i, and of course disrespect their right to live in general. So if the good guys are religious, and the bad guys are basically portrayed as murderers, how is the film anti-religion???
Anti-military, anti-religion? give me a break. it's a movie... A MOVIE. say it slowly with me: MOOOOOOVVVIIEEEEEE
Wow...what a surprise that conservatives dont like Avatar? That is sarcasm by the way. Considering that you could easily transplant Native Americans for the Na'vi I'm not surprised. The U.S. HAS a historical record of Imperialism. Taking land and resources away from others. We did it in the west, the islands and so on. Do I consider Avatar to have an anti-miliary theme. NO! It has an anti-imperialist theme, it has an anti-big business them. Don't forget the movie-made military in the movie are "guns for hire" mercenaries working for a heartless corporation. Its really ridiculous that conservatives are so threatened by a piece of science-fiction. Maybe liberals should warn everyone not to watch any John Wayne movies because of the rampant pro-conservative, Republican themes in those movies? Long and short....it just broke the world record in boxoffice, you wingnuts can complain and moan all you want.....it will keep making money.
It's a movie for crying out loud. I don't remember any protests during Fahrenheit 54. If it weren't for whining and obstinance the conservatives would have nothing to say. That is sad in itself, but for the ones that feel a need to rant about a SciFi film, I say "Get a life".
I think people need to get a life and or relax! Everything doesn't have a underlying message...it was just a movie! If you don't like it, don't see, don't buy the dvd, don't watch it when it comes on T.V. What's the point of all the complaining now anyway, it's out all ready and it's not going anywhere so the complaints are a waste of time!
Oh boy,
Really, this is what the conservative group think establishment has to worry about right now? This is actually a concern? First of all, the humans involved weren't even military, they were MERCENARIES. And I'm sorry if they are offended that big blue aliens don't pray to Jesus, but it's not so far fetched to think that sentient beings on another planet would have a completely different faith system then us. Man, the conservative cry babies are out in full force. Don't you guys have a record to listen to in reverse just to make sure there aren't any subliminal pro communist messages? I'm sure that would be a better use of your time...
Anti-military and anti-religion? Who's got a little case of 'persecution complex' then? This is just McCarthyism paranoia at its best.
Guys, it's a movie! It's not real. Also, the "military" is not the government military. They are "ex-military", employed by the Corporation. It is the Corporation calling the shots, not the true "military". As far as "anti religion", again.. it's a movie. I was not offended and have a strong faith.
Can't anyone just watch a movie for the entertainment value anymore? Someone always seems to be offended by something.
What a joke of a complaint. The movie has nothing to do with taking shots at the military or any sort of religious theme... No one has ever said that Disney's Pocahontas is anti-religious or anti-military, and yet replace the name Jake Sully with John Smith and you the plot is interchangeable.
People need to get over themselves and the sort of thinking that if you're not for us, clearly you're against us.
Yeah, I feel the same way about Disney's Pocohontas. I didn't like how much anti-american, anti-religion, and anti-military sediment that FLOWED from that left-wing piece of garbage. Don't even get me started on Bambi..... that anti-NRA gun control propaganda piece is still infecting the minds of children to this day!
RELAX, ITS A MOVIE.
Why is this news? Avatar is just a movie. Someone is making crazy declarations to get attention, just like religious groups that protested Harry Potter movies for promoting witchcraft, and educational groups that protested "Tropic Thunder" for using the 'R' word.
Anti Military? How is that? Because the humans lose?
Anti religion? Huh? The 'faith' of the locals is pushed constantly, even lifting ones close to death back to life. it isn't christianity, but it is certainly religion.
I don't see how one could make either of these claims.
You can't compare Avatar to Titanic. The price for a movie ticket was cheaper in 1997 (about $4.50). Today a movie is average $10.00.
If you calculate that per ticket. Titanic is still on top. Avatar would have to make double that to come close.
Of course Conservitives are against this, it forces people to think and questions the status quo. I wouldn't say it's anti religious, it just not about Jesus. In my opinion, the world could use less of both Religion and the Military, since these are the two biggest factors in any war.
You know what I find offensive, how Conservitive use fear and propaganda to scare and brainwash the masses of this country.
People, think for yourself, do your own research, and form your own opinions.
-peace
If the "Right Wing, Faith based" groupies don't like Avatar... then by all means..... GO MAKE YOUR OWN BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE.
I disagree. Avatar's POV is anti-imperialist, not anti military, and surely not anti-religion. The ppl of Pandora are very spiritual, albeit finding their God in nature.
Yes, I was very depressed after the movie. I like the creation of the world and the special events but when the war started, it was anti-everything American-way too far left for me. Marine killing other marines, unthinkable. Colonel says 'How does it feel to kill your own kind?" He responded by killing him. I would never ever want to see the movie again.
Well, Rupert Murdoch put up $400 million to make the biggest movie of all time while he also owns/operates the conservative FOX News–the #1 cable news network currently. So, the more we get sucked into these meritless debates, the more Aussie Murdock profits. Time to cut the strings people.
So? Religion and Military are the problems in this world. Tell me something new.
This is the stupidest comment I have seen. This film is very spiritual and totally pro God. And Since when is there a problem being pro-peace in this country. We have had nothing but constant wars for our entire history of a couple of centuries and we are all sick of it.
It's interesting that the conservatives see themselves as the kind of people that would use military force to steal resources from other people.
I think that says something about them.
