20th Century Fox says James Cameron's 3D epic "Avatar" has officially sunk "Titanic, taking the crown for the biggest movie ever.
It has topped more than $1.84 billion so far, but some critics aren't too happy about that success. Our Jason Carroll has the report.

Some conservative hate-vomiters hope to shut down all debate and all rational thinking by constantly getting "outraged" over imaginary evils while they ignore real problems. They act like snot-faced children having a temper tantrum while the house burns down. One day Americans may just stop listening to the angry, self-centered blowhards that poison the radio and television airwaves and draw their own conclusions based on facts and not on tacky, spoon fed propaganda from FOX News and the "Penguin" aka Roger Ailes.
I think by "anti-religion" the faux-conservative moral-REGULATIONists mean that the blue aliens don't wear enough clothing.
It's interesting as to why conservatives identify with the "marines" in the movie. Essentially, these "marines" are not Marines at all – they're MERCENARIES in the employ of a CORPORATION who will willingly destroy a civilization for some pricey metals.
Just because they wear camos and act like they own the place doesn't mean they're military.
@Riversong
Yes, but it's not pro "their" god. The once and always issue.
I sure wish people would stop lumping everyone together. I am a "conservative" in that I am "right of the fence" in most beliefs and practices but, I have seen Avatar, enjoyed Avatar and would love to see it again. I keep reading posts saying "conservatives are this (add negative comment) or conservatives do this (add negative comment) or conservatives think this (add negative comment). You know, I have come to realize that not all "liberals" are bad folks and in fact some of them are downright intelligent, logical people. I may not agree with EVERYTHING my good friend (a VERY liberal lady) believes BUT I respect her right to believe as she does, I listen to her and try to be objective to her point of view, AND (amazing considering some of the comments by "liberals" here) she does the same concerning my point of view. Grow up people, not every is going or SHOULD for that matter agree with you.
In Avatar Cameron perpetuates the enduring, seductive, yet morally false myth of a Garden of Eden or lost paradise inhabited by noble savages. This myth has done no end of harm to humanity.
In other words, this movie is moral nonsense. A look at primitive peoples from the prehistoric to the original inhabitants of America to the odd jungle tribe today shows brutality, superstition that leads to ostracism and murder, and institutionalized human sacrifice along with the occasional “respect” for animal spirits. And, in fact, virtue consists in disciplining our appetites and urges, in the light of reason, toward our individual well-being, which will also lead us to respect our fellows and deal with them based on mutual consent.
There are noble and virtuous individuals in primitive as well as advanced societies. But there’s nothing noble about ignorance of one’s world. There’s nothing noble about the impotence over one’s world that comes from one’s ignorance. There’s nothing noble about being unable to build adequate shelters against the forces of nature, produce adequate food against famines, or discover adequate medicines against illness.
It is the height of irony—to say nothing of hypocrisy—for Cameron, the master of movie-making technology, to have as the theme of this movie the utter evil of technology.
The movie was technically excellent and visually amazing, but the story was built on every bad Hollywood cliche in existance! Without the visuals, this movie would have gone direct to DVD.
I have 28 years in the military and I know that Marines do not kill Marines like the movie portrays, but it is typicall Hollywood bad story telling. It would have been much better without any of the lame dialog.
I can't imagine wanting to buy this to view again. The amazement that I had for the first hour or so with the visuals quickly wore off and I was bored by the end.
When Christ was arrested, his follower, Peter, drew a sword and cut off an ear of one of the mob. Jesus rebuked him for using force, and healed the wounded servant's ear (the servant of a high priest). Thus Christ never condoned force when advancing his cause, and it was religious zealots that were behind his crucifixion. The truth can only set you free if you know it.
Avatar is anti-religion? Obviously a comment made by the same people who don't like Disney cartoons because Donald Duck doesn't wear any pants.
anti-military? more like anti-imperial although Cameron's movie is a weak shot at portraying false liberal assumptions about the war in iraq and afghanistan. and anti-religious? funny, because i swear the bad guys practically acted like materialistic atheists. and worship of nature is still religion – the pagan cultures are such a genre in religion. if anything (while I was impressed by Avatar from a technology standpoint), it really felt contrived from Dances with Wolves (former marine, sent to the vast frontiers, made to befriend the natives, and then betray them when the cavalry arrives but then has a conflicted sense about him, betrays the military forces and sides with the natives, and helps them – although Dances with Wolves had a more realistic premise).
Hillbilly morons. The mullahs don't LIKE free thinking that challenges authority figures. The authority worshipping right is at it again, but this time we don't CARE – – we worry about our jobs, a stupid military involvement in the middle east, health care, global climate change . . . and all the right can do is hammer away at the same old tired Culture War. And the press just goes along because some idiots at a think tank start the chain re-action of fake outrage going? NO ONE cares.
I'm in the military, deployed right now, in fact. I saw the movie while home on mid-tour R&R...twice. Excellent film. Groundbreaking. I seriously wonder why some think people are so shallow that they must not be able to discriminate between a fictional example of abused military power and an overall indictment of the military, which "Avatar" is not. Take a poll today and you'll find the same results we've seen for quite a while now...that the military is highly respected and appreciated by the strong majority of the public. How could that be true if that same public just made some horrible anti-military flick the highest grossing film of all time (likely by far, once it's all said and done)? I'd suggest perhaps that characterization of the movie is pretty badly skewed, just a shallow dismissal. I'd offer this instead...when we have to stifle concerns that military might COULD ever be abused, then we're on a slippery slope to a scary society.
Anti-military and anti-faith? That's ironic, considering that warmonger Rupert Murdoch is profiting from this movie. I encourage all people who are opposed to war to boycott this movie – by purchasing a ticket, you are putting money into the pocket of the devil who owns Fox News – the leading purveyor of hate and lies in the media.
I agree with the critics. This movie is so "anti," just like Bambi, action movies, fairy tales, military films, comics, documentaries, newspapers, westerns, most books, cartoons and movie critics. Something ought to be done.
Although, I am not a believer in religion, I believe something or some diety created the world but i don't believe he/she is sitting up there logging everyone's transgressions on some tablet, nor do I think he/she hears prayers as I think everything that happens in our lives happens cause it's supposed to happen, no matter what you do or who you pray to, so the movie really did not offend me, or shake my views. If there was some great all powerful being up there, it would be nice to prevent things like hurricanes or earthquakes, or things like poverty. Back on topic, It's a movie that really did not make my life worse or better, but I loved it. I honestly can't see why many would have issues with this movie. The movie doesn't destroy your beliefs, or shouldn't shake your faith. I get really sick the religious folks trying to push their values & views on the rest of us. If you don't agree with the movie don't go see the movie or his movies. Simple...
Those that proclaim that the movie is anti-religion and anti-military, are taking the movie at an entirely different level that what I think it was meant to be. I think that it is more about corporate greed, and other so called civilized races trying to force their brand of life style on to any race/religion/etc, that doesn't match what they feel life should be. The people are very religious and in tune with nature and even their planet as a whole. I suppose these same people think that Mother Nature is anti-religion as well??? Heck, why don't these nuts just go back to playing their Beetles records backwards, and let the rest of us enjoy the movie?.
Well, is too complicated for me, anyway, this is the year 2010 not 1810, people are opening their eyes and are stopping thinking about Invicible Gods (God, Allah, Satan, Santa, etc), we are not that stupids anymore guys, go away with your old-brain-eating-music!!!!!!
I loved the movie. It's just a movie. My view of the United States, or our military, or my belief in God, or my belief in religion, or people , or nature did not change with the movie. The director has every right to make the movies he sees fit, put however many messages in them he wants, if you don't like that, don't go see his movies. I saw it twice, probably go see it again, & loved it, but to be honest, my first thought when I saw it the first time was he just summed up Iraq, greed, oil, corporations, the military, our government, global warming, & the list continues in 2.5hours.
This is absurd. The bad guys in Avatar are ex-military guys who have been abandoned by our society and have had to take up with a for-profit corporation. They are victims too. The movie is not about a military that has to act with political and social factors considered. The corporation in Avatar is only concerned about profits.
And, this film is all about faith. It's central themes are consistent with the tenets of all major religions. It is not necessarily Christian, but it is consistent with Christian beliefs. To call it anti-religious is a flat out lie.
I just had a crazy idea. Who is making the most money from this movie? Liberal Hollywood types or conservative, right-wing bankers and financial-types? How's that for a little bit irony? I can just imagine a group of right-wing bankers brainstorming on how to make money from knee-jerk liberals? Let's make a anti-military, anti-religion, pro-indigenous lifeform movie!!! The leftists will see it since it bashes the right and rightists will see it because it has cool guns and it gives them a reason to WHINE !!!
Want to blame those left-wing, bleeding-heart, Hollywood-types of being anti-milirary and anti-religion? Fine. Who cares? Want to stop it? Vote with your feet and don't pay to see the movie. It's known as the capitalist system. The ultimate arbitrator of a movie's worth - did it make money?
For me Avatar had great special effects. It also had a lame story - Dances with Wolves meets Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. I don't care for the silly story, but it was still an entertaining movie.
I can't believe that these bible thumping idiots who believe in a fantasy should be so critical of this movie. They are the ones who are pro war, are actually turning away from the true teachings of Jesus and are acting like wolves in lambs clothing.
I planted trees for 22 years for so little pay, I could barely survive. I personally planted 1.3 million trees. Avatar reminds us of what really matters. Can humans survive without nature? Not. Can humans survive on machines alone? No way! I think the conservatives are fighting for machines that destroy nature and our resources.
A message to all the conservatives out there...
It may be difficult for you to grasp but there are many people in this world who do NOT THINK LIKE YOU!
And they NEVER will.
Why not channel all this negative energy you are constantly spitting out into doing something positive? Something that will help solve REAL problems in the world?
It sure would be healthier for us all.
Please think about it, for the good of EVERYONE.
Wow, I can't believe the incredible ignorance of some of these comments. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though, after 50 years of public school and media brainwashing.
Give me a break....people read WAY too much into movies. The purpose of a movie is to provide entertainment. Get over yourselves! Find something else to do with your spare time.
Characters in this movie are similar to HINDU God Rama, Hanuman. I guess that's why Church cant digest its glory. Say Jain Hanuman!!
To all of you criticizing this film on such specious, right-wing, religio-fanatic, teabaggin' grounds...
Shut the helll up and sit the hell down. We're tired of listening to your talking points, screeds, paranoid delusions and Limbaugh-gasms on everything from healthcare to giant, blue aliens.
Honestly, if I could move to Pandora tomorrow to get away from the pathetic likes of you, I would do it in a heartbeat. Or maybe Canada.
Give the Navi people another 2000 years. Their whole world will be destroyed by their own selfish greed and they will all be pro-this and anti-that with a complex yet extremely inefficient form of government. It is the natural progression of things.
I mean what did you guys think about the Navi people only being able to marry people in the same tribe, having a dictatorship, having the males be able to choose their female companion. Seems like they need to progress substantially and open their minds.
Hey, I have a great solution to all of these questions and concerns about Avatar. It's a story, based heavily off of Pocahontas. In it, there's bad guys, and there's good guys. The good guys win in the end, and everyone goes home happy. Now, people can continue to find problems with it, and that's well within their rights, or just watch it enjoy it for what it is...a movie. I personally prefer the latter, its SO much more fun.
What? Anti-religion? Go watch Religulous. 😀
These debates are what make us look like idiots.
So how about The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind? Would love to hear what the "intellectuals" have to say about these beloved classics that destroyed American values.
Avatar is a right-wing too. FOX is using it to get liberals to pay for their reactionary right-wing political agenda.
@ Pam.
If ticket prices are adjusted, Titanic is not the most lucrative movie ever either, though.
That title belongs to gone with the wind.
The notion this movie is anti-military or anti-faith is an ignorant. Avatar is a movie that is pro-tribal living and anti-greed and imperialistic oppression.
It is what it is, right wing, out of touch "critics" will cause a controversy over anything.
If you have problems with Avatar, back up your words with action and boycott the NEWS CORPORATION LTD. / FOX NETWORKS and their subsidiaries that own/produced Avatar. Their principal US subsidiaries include: Fox Television, Fox International, The Golf Channel, Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal, TV Guide, HarperCollins, LA Dodgers, LA Kings, and the LA Lakers. These corporations only care about money and Christian values mean nothing to them. The only thing they understand/value is greed – so if you object to the hidden un-American messages in Avatar, boycott these corporations and send these godless heathen corporations a message they will understand and respond to.
'Avatar' is 'Jude Suss' and 'Triumph of the Will' for the 21st century.
And one more thing – the "critics" are just a sorry bunch of 15 minute seekers..
See? It even got me to bother with ANOTHER message...
I REALLY want to hire the genius came up with it, now......
The genius of all this is how some lowly interm/producer got all of you(heck – even me) to spend the time to read all of the comments and even leave comments of your own – a number of you at great and vehement length.
If he/she needs a job – contact me!
By the way – I saw the movie and LOVED it, despite a shallow unoriginal story plot. As to the anti-anythingness of it – who cares? James Cameron made a butt load of cash!!!
Unobtanium is a rip off of Upsidaisium. This is a slap in the face of all Rocky and Bullwinkle fans. Where is the outrage?
Why cant people just enjoy this awesome film.. (Its just a movie)
Avatar is an allegory. As a veteran of both the Vietnam and Iraq wars I was amazed by the technical aspects (but no 'better' than Beowulf) and deeply offended at the allegorical message. Avatar clearly presents the distorted, untrue, far left message regarding US intervention in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. It represents the US Marines as bloodthirty, stupid warriors (Leftist Lie #1), represents coporate interests as completely selfish and ruthless (while I believe out-of-control US corporations underlie many of our current problems, this is Leftist Lie #2), that there is no rescue of real people from barbaric despots (Leftist Lie #3 - as a doctor I am particularly familiar with the relative roles of US and vs Viet Cong, NVA and al Qaeda, and we were the good guys), and primitive ritual is a superior substitute to the more learned knowledge of nature and the universe (Leftist Lie #4). Once you got beyong the entertaining 3-D graphics, this movie was nothing more than cheap, allegorical propaganda from a closed minded far left director.
I think this is another article biased by CNN. Notice how it mentions conservatives and not NEO-conservatives. Big difference. Neoconservatives are what's ruining the true meaning of conservatism and the GOP. As far as the movie is concerned the special effects were amazing; they made neocons in the real world see things that didn't exist. What's wrong, the movie touched what's left of your conscience?
I'm in the military, spiritual, and consider myself a conservative leaning moderate. I saw no "anti-faith" or "anti-military" undertones to the film. I see it as a film about perspective, specifically with which side you identify yourself. If you align yourself with power and greed, I'm sure you took exception to this film. If you subscribe to humility and coexistence, you probably liked it. These points of view are independent of your faith or military service, but heavily related to modern culture and the abundance of a sense of entitlement as it seems to have run rampant these days. Moral of the story (in my humble opinion), be a part of something greater than yourself, serve that something and all those around you, live a life of balance, and thats all any deity, person, or alien race could possibly ask of you.
Horvath.....Right wingers are narrow-minded fools.
AHHH. I thought it was just a movie!
It just a freakin' movie people....it's call entertainment..
Agreed...it is!!! And that's GOOD. Bravo Mr. Cameron!
I hope the zillions of World Citizens that see this movie are moved by this movie's message.
"Religion" has killed more human beings than disease...and the tool
used is the Military. John Lennon has it "right on" in "Imagine".
I worship my own God. You go worship yours.
So it's anti-military and anti-religion and it's incredibly popular. What does that tell you about the way the military and religion are perceived in this country these days?
So what the title of this article is suggesting that Avatar is pro Obama
I didn't see the film as anti-military so much as anti-mercenary. The deployed units were made of up ex-mil personnel who were in the employ of the corporation seeking to strip-mine the planet. If Cameron had a real-life target in mind, it was something more along the lines of Blackwater - modern guns for hire - not the military per se.
JR January 26th, 2010 9:57 pm ET ~ fanaticism, fear and suspicion...not religion....~
That's pretty much the definition of religion, isn't it? fanaticism, fear and suspicion
Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Fanatic – marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion
Fear – an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger (religion instills fear in its adherents that God's wrath will come upon them if they don't live as their religious leaders tell them)
Suspicion – the act or an instance of suspecting something wrong without proof or on slight evidence (the Devil is out to get everyone because religious leaders say so)
So I've heard that Titanic is being called more sucessful due to the greater attendence...how about a movie where tickets cost 2-4 times as much in a time of crippled banks, ruined credit, and tight wallets, you be the judge.
I'm sorry but the story line on this movie was something of a 5th grade level. Animation very awesome .. but story line .... Jump into the depths of Saran wrap !!!
I'm uber-conservative, Christian, pro-military, pro-big business...... I thought the movie was awesome. Folks need to relax and stop getting their values from Hollywood and realize this is entertainment.
This is just silly. I'm a conservative and a si-fi fan even longer. Avatar was excellent si-fi. It wasn't anti-millitary; it was anti-imperialism. The planet wasn't their god, the "network" the trees created was a giant data storage unit functioning much like the human brain. In the network was the uploaded memories of their ancesters which they didn't want to lose. Any damage to the forest risked data loss. Damage to their access nodes was even more catastrophic.
Why should the rantings of some obviously clueless individuals be taken as the "conservative" viewpoint rather than the "clueless" viewpoint?
I'm a conservative, and while I found Avatar to be, to paraphrase Ross Douthat, a paean to ecopantheistic naivete and vengeance porn for the American left, that's nothing new in movies, and the movie was modestly enjoyable. It was anti-military and anti-capitalist, but on the other hand, it made a strong statement in support of private property rights.
A bit over the top on the propaganda, though. I much preferred District 9, which had some similar themes, but didn't have all the characters preaching at us. Because unlike James Cameron, Peter Jackson understood that sometimes the best movies have subtle themes, not ones that are crammed down your throat.
The real problem to me was that OTHER movies kept running through my head as I watched it. You know. The forty or so other movies that Cameron was blatantly copying scenes and dialogue from.
Gone With the Wind still beats Avatar, if ticket prices are adjusted to today's value, Gone earned over 6 billion. Yummy Clark Gable over blue people any day.
These conservatives are idiots. I'm with Phil: screw 'em.. What have conservatives ever done for the world, other than bring war, death, and oppression? If conservatives had their way, there would still be slavery, women wouldn't be able to vote (or work), there would be no social security, no middle class, no Medicare, etc, etc. Come on folks: name one thing conservatives have ever done to help the world...
Christians didnt whine this much when they were being fed to lions...
Ah the good old days.
As a PS to the debate on which movie grossed more, adjusted for inflation, Titanic or Avitar.
Neither.
Gone with the Wind made more, adjusted for inflation.
i completely agree with ode2amudpuddle. why do people look so much into it. It's a movie. enjoy it. too much analyzing going on.
I am glad someone got offended and said something about it! I am glad everyone is chiming in on this topic.
We all need to be offended and to offend more often! It is what makes America Great! Debate is healthy. Even if you feel it is silly.
Blasphemy and even being flat out vulgar is required to make and keep this country free! As soon as anyone can put a muzzle on anyone else we're all done for. All forms of censorship is a lost of freedom.
If you can't handle it then learn to fight back, life isn't easy but not being free is much worse.
"She doth protest too much." spoken of Lady McBeth (Shakespeare)
Too close to the truth. Imperialism right in your face. Get over it. Let's say it loud and clear. You're right. That movie's right in your kitchen. As ye sew, so shall ye reap. Can't take the heat, stop messing with earth and remove the cover off the centuries old Vadican cover up of who Jesus really was and the true origins of the human genome and race. You cut too close to the truth and all the believers come forth, the understanders have once again rattled their feeble grasp of fictional reality. It takes art immitating life for us to look in the mirror and find ourselves distasteful.
Shame on us. The aboriginals all had it right, we had to come over here, steal their wealth and land, bring them small pox and destroy or hide their origins stories...closer to the truth than Genesis and the Vadican knows it. Thats why the church and off side governments have destroyed or hidden away artifacts/literature that could release their dying grasp on that franchise for you soul.
xoxo
One day your faith will be shaken when you realized that there is nothing but nature and science, and we have spent all this energy fighting and prying to some cult that have risen out of the middle ages. Instead we should be persuing peace and harmony with the natural elements and focus on this planet that gives until we have bankrupted it.
It became immediately apparent during viewing that this was a replay of the US/ Indian wars when George Armstrong Custer illegally entered the Black Hills with the clear intention of violating the existing treaty so the US govenrment could determine the existance of "gold" in those hills. The gold was merely replaced by a shiny new rock and the indians were replaced by...well, more Indians on horses. Clearly, it supported the Indians and the invasion of "their" land and portrayed forever aggressive military/government as the the hostiles .
Hey,
Wing-nut conservatives had "The Passion of the Christ"
So let Wing-nut liberals have their Avatar.
Dances With Wolves was very anti-military as well.
I didn't see too much complaining when it won the Best Picture Oscar.
Avatar, some conservatives gripe, is anti-religious? Even if it is – so what? Only pro-religious movies can be made in the democratic republic of America??? Hypocrisy and a double-standard.
My dad joined the Army, & I the Navy, so that Americans can be free to have differing opinions.
"Avatar is anti-religious." Then don't see it (freedom is great) Watch a pro-religious movie instead, or help fund the filming of another.
Freedom: it's messy, but better than any tyranny.
BTW, the movie is not anti-religion. It may be about another religion, not Christian, but it is not anti-religion. In a free country, movies relating to different religions is allowed. And what a great country, to allow such a thing! By the way, only 33% of the world is Christian. I would suspect aliens will have their own religions just as humans have other religions besides Christianity. So it would not be surprising that some aliens would not be Christian.
Not all conservatives are complaining about this movie so stop throwing us all into the same basket... it shows your mob mentality ignorance. And if you don't believe in religion, God or Jesus and think that only wars have been caused by others believing one thing or another, once again you're showing your ignorance... many churches help people in need everyday. Read about it. It's real, it's true and it hasn't started any wars. So easy to say religion sucks, but so many are helped by it everyday. Guess that makes you WRONG.
Its a MOVIE!!! Not a documentary! "Patricia" writes "Marine killing Marine" Like it is something new that American kills another american... Look at history... Civil War... Revolutionary war... even in the bible brother killed brother...Oh..That must be different! Its about technology... Greed... and power. You can compare this movie to any number of incidents in Americas history. If you try real hard you can compare it to a few songs... "One tin Soldier" by Coven for instance. Watch the movie and view it for what it is... Entertaining, advanced and enthralling!! IT IS JUST A MOVIE!!! NOT A STATEMENT!!! AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!
Build, sorry.
Who the hell cares. Its a movie for th love of Mike. Just bould a bridge and get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AVATAR – is great sci-fi. The real issue in it is all about what will humans really do when we are able to actually go into the universe and colonize another planet that can support human life. Will we colonize like the ruthless army Colonel in the movie, or will we find some unique way of adapting naturally (or with a little tech/bio help) like in the movie. That is the question, are we violent conquerers or are we intelligent ascendent beings worthy of inhabiting and co-existing peacefully with other forms of life in the universe.
When they say "anti-religious" they really mean "non-Christian". The aliens have their own made-up religion in this movie, and the Christians are just mad that it's non-Christian. You might just as well call jews and buddhists "anti-religious" for not being Christian either. Those aliens all worship their own native religion, calling that anti-religious is just stupid!
HA! HA! HA! HA! The most frightening thing is that some folks actually take this claim seriously. The blog-atars must be bored out of their gords to waste their time on this. .
Avatar IS a movie, right? Just checking. I wasn't sure, with all the republican/democrat bashing taking place. I could have sworn people were actually reading into this completely mediocre storyline and trying desperately to make parallels between the movie and real life. But I must be mistaken, because only someone who had SERIOUSLY lost touch with reality would make comments like that. Right?
On a side note, I read somewhere above about "depression" after seeing this movie. Not the first time I've come across that issue in the news with this movie. I'll refrain from laughing... or will I?
It's just a movie. A visually stunning movie, yes. But still... just a movie. Not a documentary. A FICTIONAL movie- and one with a rather bland storyline. Hey, it's not just my opinion. Even the critics say it was lacking.
My son is an Iraq war veteran. He loved the movie and he loved the message.
Anti-Military – nope...It is made very clear at the beginning of that the people are employees of a private corporation, not the military. Anti-Religion – nope...religion is the belief in a supernatural power which is made very clear throughout the entire movie.....just because you aren't preaching one of the more popular religions doesn't mean you are Anti-Religion
How easy it is to make all of you people feel superiour than that "stupid conservatives". I could feel you forgetting son's drinking, daughter's pimples, boss yelling, no career, lousy pay. Yes, at least you are smarter!
Honestly folks, it's only a movie, you know, entertainment?! When you start seeing so many sinister implications and "hidden" meanings, you're only seeing your own personal neuroses and biases. It's a movie, you either like it or you don't. It doesn't have to be read like tea leaves or spilled entrails for reinforcement of your own selfmade fears and hates.
Did anyone else notice that this awesome movie is almost the same story line as "Fern Gully" which is a child's movie with tiny ferries...
Can't people just accept the fact that it's a movie and stop reading into it so much. I see it as good entertainment.....IT'S JUST A MOVIE!
I'm retired military and I loved Avatar; it's THE defining film of the early 21st century and I'll shoot a spitwad at any of you neo-pinko morons that say otherwise.
I'd say it's anti-Greed and pro-God/Humanity.
Here in Texas, we see bumper stickers that say:
What's OUR oil doing under THEIR soil?
Says it all, huh?
COME ON PEOPLE, I think people need to lighten up. They were on another planet ,remember?!? I think people are becoming way to radical analyzing everything as if it pertains to the really real world we live in. It is a movie folks. I think there are a lot of people that need to get a grip. It is a brilliant work of art from a very gifted group of creative minds. Thank you for the viewing pleasure Mr. Cameron keep up the good work.
Independent in Florida
It's a movie people... Seriously?
The reason why people are so sensitive about this issue is because the US military is now a for-profit entity, and it is spinning OUT OF CONTROL! There are now more private US military personnel overseas than US military! We have spent a TRILLION dollars on the wars in the last 10 years!! And private companies are making a killing!!
That's why this issue is so hot. And that's why conservatives hate O'Bama. Because is shutting down private military ventures!
No more Blackwater Xe, and no more war profiteering! See reporter Jeremy Scahill's videos.
This is stupid...you could also say that Avatar is anti-white people....and anti-black people, anti-asian, anti-indian.... basically anyone that's not blue.
Avatar is about as close as anti God, anti war libs will come to combat. Get your fat butts off your couch or pry yourself out of your theater seat; drop the buttered popcorn and stay up with me for a day. No, on second thought, I don't want you in my unit.
In nterviews, James Cameron is quite clear about his politics (limosine liberal). The movie is certainly not pro military or pro religion or pro American for that matter. But I think people should be careful not to see things that are not there.
If the conservatives paid attention, the troops were a privately hired army, owned and only reporting to the mining company. They mentioned it in about the 1st ten minutes.
So, it would be more of a condemnation of warlords and private armies that are not governed by the rules of war, or honor.
Wait a minute. This movie was a fantasy? It wasn't factual?
Lied to again by the cultural elite!
It's a freakin' MOVIE people. I really doubt that there are underlying messages in this M-O-V-I-E! People that "Find" messages in this type of M-O-V-I-E need to fund a different agenda. Give it a rest and move on with your lives, there's more important issues at hand.
As art and mythology, I suppose it is fine. But I refuse to see it. Reality is that "returning to the jungle" does not provide you with the technology you take for granted. What if you get sick? Get an infection? Require modern dentistry? Get a dread disease? I guarantee you won't go to this movie to get the help you need.
The "nation" of Avatar will not provide you with any help. It is technology, energy, and yes...corporations...that provide you with these on a day to day basis. The ultimate irony is that it is this VERY technology that provided you with the movie Avatar!
The computers, energy, education and technology required to build this movie came out of just what it hates. sanjosemike
Everyone's a conspiracy theorist. You can make a conspiracy out of every single show on TV or movie in the theatrers. Twist what ever it is to your own perception or to gain a little notoriety in the the media. Teletubbies to aliens to mindless entertainment. Just spin it and abra cadabra.....the real message reveals itself. Just watch it and enjoy it or don't enjoy it. It certainly isn't labeled as a documentary.
You know why conservatives are so paranoid about being persecuted?.. It's kind of a no-brainer considering the frequency and intensity of persecution they have delivered unto others...
I'm inclined to say we should give their fears a foundation. I'm inclined to believe they need a bit of their own medicine for once. I'm inclined to believe that nothing could possibly be better for the state of this planet then to round up all the conservatives, place them in secured locations, let them have their zealot ways, and keep them safe from everyone else...
Am I the only one that can imagine how wonderful the world could be without the paranoid, domineering, abusive influence of the Christian right? Isn't it about time that we all step back and take a good hard look at what kind of disease is crawling around within our midst? You know if it were a bug with legs and pincers that crawled between our sheets to bite us in the middle of the night we would hesitate to smash it lifeless...
I guess I just don't really see the difference. I mean, hell, if the Christian right could figure out a way to get rid of everyone who didn't believe and live exactly the way they do, you know they would have done it long, long ago...
There's plenty of evidence they HAVE been trying since day one........
The owners of this planet are fearful of us having one decent thought not centered on sex, violence or what other crap we could buy that is going to make us "happy". The movie brilliantly points out how humans really work, especially the US and their smash grab job of oil in the middle east. They fear us waking up to the reality of the world we live in realizing we have responsibility to God, each other and our planet. Knowledge is power, thinking is strength... the establishment can't have that, it threatens them.
"Yes, I was very depressed after the movie. I like the creation of the world and the special events but when the war started, it was anti-everything American-way too far left for me. "
Is that supposed to be a serious post? I especially enjoy the part: "It was anti-American – way too far left..." What are you talking about? Do you even know? There's nothing "anti-American" about having left-leaning political ideals. That ntion is a bunch of crap cooked up by certain idiotic conservatives who believe anyone who disagrees with anything they say is "Anti-American". It;s afear-0based reaction, and it's childish.
I am a minority member and uhh that movie was racist, really shows the decline of the United States
As someone who is both Christian and pro-military...who cares! It is a movie, if your fail and your beliefs are so weak that a movie can shake them then you have real problems.
That being said the movie is nothing more than Dances with Wolves in space. The I-Max and 3d is what made the movie awesome. It would not be as good on my 55 inch LED at home.
Sounds like the mullah's of the US are at it again.
