20th Century Fox says James Cameron's 3D epic "Avatar" has officially sunk "Titanic, taking the crown for the biggest movie ever.
It has topped more than $1.84 billion so far, but some critics aren't too happy about that success. Our Jason Carroll has the report.

Ok really? anti religion? people are just mad that its not God or Jesus..There are different religions out there people believe it or not. If your that offended by the fact that a FICTIONAL race of aliens had beliefs that are based the pagan faith then you really need to be a little more opened minded.
I am a religious person, and I liked Avatar. It is just a story, and a very entertaining one with very richly developed characters. It is not anti-religious. It is non-religious. A movie does not have a Christian theme in order for religious people to like it. Titanic certainly did not.
I think everyone is trying to read more into the meaning of this movie, just like with everything in today's society. People who know nothing about a subject want to analyze it to death. I saw Avatar last weekend and was impressed with the technology. I left thinking it was a good movie, not wondering what was the deep, dark hidden meaning. Seeing this blog maybe stop and think. And what I came up with is that it was nothing more than a futuristic cowboy and indian movie, only this time the indians won. Nothing more, nothing less.
I word of advice, stop analyzing everything and just enjoy life. And by the way, I am one of those conservatives that are supposedly at the root of the evil in the making of this movie.
My religion is the cause of most wars? Let's examine the great tyrants of the past 2,000 years and see how many Christians we find on the list shall we? Adolph Hitler? Nope. Joseph Stalin? Nuh -uh. Pol Pot? Ditto. Napoleon? Not him either. Louis the 14th? The French revolutionaries? Chairman Mao? Atilla the Hun? Genghis Kahn? None of these historical figures found any inspiration in the Bible. In fact, most of then were either athiest or thought themselves God–that is secular humanism in a nutshell. Some of you young scholars need to examine world history with some critical thought rather than repeating the mantras ("religion bad, man good") of your college professors.
What little people do see through there eyes. The movie says one thing respect and do not take the things around for granted. As for the "ANTI"; it is like faith. Do not convince another about your "faith".
It is something like the Middle East war if you ask me. Many greedy people, invading a land and culture in order to obtain the valuable resource they happen to live on top of. Sometimes it is hard for those who have no true faith or connection to their own land, it is hard for them to understand why others would. Consider our own economy, because of our actions to obtain such easy access to oil fields, we absolutely depend on oil. Instead of going to war for Middle East oil, we should have been purchasing it from them at their rate, in turn giving them a chance to improve their own economy and our relations with them in the future. This would have also helped us look for alternative energy a long time ago, considering we would be paying a lot more for oil if this was our past. But with greed, we could not give them a chance, and took it from underneath them regardless of their faith or culture, kind of like in the movie. Remember that oil with blood on it, sends you to hell as well as the provider.
Did anyone see a movie by the name of A Man Called Horse with Richard Harris? Same idea as Avatar. Its a movie to entertain.
Just enjoy a MOVIE
Some people are so busy complaining that they are tripping over their own tongues. Nothing better to do?Go to Haiti or Ethiopia and help the poor. The Navi can take care of themselves, thank you.
Some people like to complain so much that they are tripping over their own tongues. Nothing better to do? Go to Haiti or Ethiopia and use your time to help the poor. The Navi can take care of themselves, thank you.
Every movie expresses a point of view. Are the "critics" afraid this particular point of view will influence children in a negative way? It's interesting that half of the population feels that peace and intelligence are negatives.
Anti-religion? Anti-military? Hmmmmmmm, well, first of all, anyone who thinks this movie is either of these things needs less time on their hands. Second, lets see this from another point of view. Lets say the movie IS anti-military and anti-religion. If that's the case, then I still like the movie. If people would see things for what they really are, we wouldn't need religion, and if we didn't have religion, we certainly wouldn't need a tenth the military we have.
It is understandable that everyone is welcome to an opinion expressed in a globally accessible forum such as this. Avatar is a truly lush motion picture experience ever. It takes a certain stretch of the mind to come to terms with the fact that everything has its own unique value which is why a movie like Splash is still a great movie. When it comes down to it, I would prefer to see Avatar but, fortunately it has not. Someone else might prefer Alvin The Chipmunks – it's a matter of individual make-up.
A movie, particularly one such as Avatar is the combination of expressions which have been in the mind of the director and which he painfully tethers and factors necessary for the undertaking to be a commercial success.
It is just a movie – just a story yarned by a great cinematic storyteller, when it comes to the kinds of movies he (Cameron) does. He is not Robert Altman, Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino etc. Each has his own elements where he is like God. It was about time really that the underdogs won in a movie. It was a story of what is morally right winning the day as opposed to force, violence and underhandedness.
And, he got an entirely different body, a better one, with the use of legs he had lost to boot. Top it all off, he got the prime babe in the clan. I can't stop thinking what lovemaking would be like between beings like that. Imagine bonding with the strands at the end of their hairs to make love. They may not even need to join physically. No danger of AIDS etc.
That is what a really good movie should do. Make us feel that good can overcome evil, be brilliant in imagery and motion, its pace, and stretch the imagination.
Why anyone would say it was anti-faith is beyond me. He did go to pray at the tree. If that was not faith, I don't know what it is. That was their faith approach on that planet. And, unless the United States Army is capable of doing what those asinine guys were trying to, then the movie is not anti-military. I guess the military would fight for the protection of the rights of the minority and less powerful.
So, the inhabitants of the vatican would be happier if the inhabitants of Pandora were Roman catholic.
Does this mean that Tom and Jerry were a couple of infidels?
The earth survived for billions of years without a "god'. It was only fairly recently that humanity created the concept of a 'god' or 'gods' to explain things they couldn't understand. The fact that people still believe in these stories is embarrassing. Why do we assume that beings on other planets will have these same fantasies? If they are secure in their environment, they won't need to create the concept of a god to explain things.
First off i like to say I LOVE THIS MOVIE...
2nd... ITS A MOVIE
3rd... I believe in one true god.
4th... ITS A MOVIE
-why do people get all mad about a movie because one person says somthing bad about it. OORR the pope says somthing.(he did say somthing )
-Its not here to change how people think about GOD. a movie is there to have fun/Be with your family, friend and loved ones... NOT go O M its all Anti Religion... ITS NOT, there is SO MUCH religion in this movie its not even funny.
-its there religion.. THere is so many Religion in are world why not just leave it alone>?
-Even sunday schools talk about MOther Earth....
5th Anit Military movie????????????? DID YOU EVEN WATCH the movie? Military is a Army that Works for a Country not a Company.....
Im just sick of people on The left and the Right saying this and saying that... ITS A MOVIE watch it or dont. Let people LIVE THERE LIFES!!
"TOTALLY PRO GOD", what an absurd comment, have you even watched this film?
As a conservative I can say I could care less. It is a movie and entertainment. Please stop lumping these right wing nutjobs in with true conservatives. We are kind people who do not hate others. We simply don't want the government running our lives and making decisions for us but we do not hate ... not even the super left 😉
what is wrong with people. they become increasingly more offended by movies that make an increasingly relevant wake-up call to society. movies like this are not only beautiful but they shake people out of their mainstream attitudes. Avatar was awesome. nuff said.
Its a cartoon. Its not real...
... So for the sake of greed a corporation pays mercenaries to attack peaceful people who leave in harmony on their planet... the people defend themselves and stop the ones who want to displace them against their will and existing freedom... Isn't it representing very well American values? People rallying to defend themselves against incoming dictators...?
It is the story of civilization, except the ending got changed.
If there was a scene in which Glenn Beck was eaten by those dog creatures I'd probably see Avatar seven or eight times.
The movie was very mediocre. Tedious and trite. It was called Dances With Wolves. The plot was just garbage. Bright colors though.
It reminded me of a SciFi version of Dances with wolves.
Actually the Na'Vi experienced religion very much they way we do in my church. I am a Unitarian Universalist. Our principle of the interconnectedness of every living thing was shown so beautifully here. Anti- Religion????! Hell, it was OUR 10 Commandments! To us UUs it was a very religious movie.
I hear libs always whinning about their rights. Do not generalize all conservatives because of a few complaints about Avatar. Remember, this is a center right country and conservatism is the foundation of the constitution. If it wasnt for conservitives, this would not be the most powerful country in the world. Conservatives are the only ones that have any guts and do not depend on free rides from the government.
I would be very surprised if CNN actually posts this comment.
I don't get it. How was this movie anti-religion? The Na'vi just had a different form of religion. Their religion was tied into nature and specifically the nature around them such as the trees. I fail to see how that's anti-religious. Also, so what if the movie was anti-military? The native culture in the movie was peaceful! What'd you expect? For them to love the people trying to strip-mine their planet? Seriously, I'll never understand some people. Avatar tried to show how we need to take care of the planet (our's in this case) even if we don't necessarily understand it. Some people... don't even know what to say to them.
Who cares what the right wingnuts think? Are they crazy? Yes. It's a MOVIE. Then again, they have trouble distinguishing their reality from everyone else's reality. Get a life, Republicans. Better yet. Get a sense of irony and humor.
IT'S A MOVIE! GET OVER IT!
The United States has free speech. Movies are a form of free speech. Anyone who criticizes a movie on political basis is criticizing free speech. We also have freedom of religion. Criticize the spirituality in Avatar and one is criticizing freedom of religion. The United States is NOT a country with only one religion. All religions are allowed and should be appreciated with peaceful coexistence. This movie has beautiful spiritual beliefs and anyone who is offended by them seriously has to look within themselves and ask why they are so scared of such a thing. If ones belief is strong enough, no movie, or anything, can even shake it. If ones beliefs are not, however, then one is subject to offense. Look within ones self before throwing stones, one does not want to become the next form of terrorist by spreading more forms of hate.
Let's be honest... Put the special effects aside, and this was at best a B movie.
Umm, psst, psst... Half-human / half-animal characters means Avatar = pro-bestiality.
I used to be a seminarian studying to be a Catholic priest, and I loved Avatar. The relationship and respect the Na'vi have with their environment is definitely worthy of respect and admiration, and perhaps we, as an industrial society, should adopt some of the same respect for our natural habitat as displayed in Cameron's film. I don't view the film as anti-religion by any means, and it is definitely not anti-military.
The film does, however, demonstrate cultural relativism using the military and corporation as its example. After watching this film, viewers should remember that we, as members of a culture, are biased, and need to take good care to withold judgement until we better understand those who we would judge. Avatar demonstrates a before and after effect of cultural relatavism using Jake Sulley, who begins the film as a Marine without any cultural understanding of the Na'vi, and ends the film with a new perspective after making an effort to understand a foreign culture. As a western society, we often judge cultures with beliefs and practices different than our own, a practice that leads to much discord. Before declaring a cultural or religious practice "savage," we should first consider how we are viewed in the eyes of those we judge and label. It just might mean the difference between war and peace.
Of course its antimilitary–why do you think its so popular?
Avatar is incredible!!! I could teach an entire philosophy class based on the movie. There is so much symbolism and deep hidden meanings. The war actually is only a small part of the movie. If you haven't heard of Joseph Campbell (a Catholic) please Google/Bing/YouTube him. Movies like Star Wars, the Matrix and Avatar is based on his study of the "hero" in cultures/religions. Avatar goes one step further by interweaving his respect for nature aspect. It is NOT anti-religion. It is one of the most religious movies I've ever seen. It's just like Dances With Wolves.
This movie is just as paramount as the Jazz Singer (brought sound), Gone with the Wind/Wizard of Oz (brought color) and Avatar brings another dimension. Movies from now on will not be made or viewed the same. Neither will TV or Sport Channels (ESPN has dedicated a 3D channel this summer and IMAX, Discovery Channel and Sony are producing a 3D cable channel coming this winter).
The sad thing is that if the movie wasn't doing well they wouldn't even bring it up. They're just hanging their "message" on somebody else's success. If it wasn't for the movie and it's publicity, they wouldn't have a podium to spew from.
As for anti-military/anti-religion – Get a clue, grow a brain and start thinking for yourself.
It's a MOVIE folks! More importantly, as far as I was taught, this film and it's message is protected by the Constitution. I am incredibly sick and tired of these zealots who feel that free speech ONLY pertains to their message and their religion.
What is the matter with everyone. THIS IS JUST A MOVIE. IT IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT. I agree with TJM.
It's also anti-gay. He went for the girl!
Just wait until the conservatives and religious-right find out that Avatar is fiction – kinda like "The Passion of the Christ," which, by the way, seemed to be anti-government and anti-religion, as to Judaism, anyway. Maybe, if they didn't see Avatar in 3-D, it wouldn't have seemed so real to them.
If ...in your mind....
– Military force is always right – at least if it is done by white American-looking types.....don't go see the movie.
– Any respectful presentation of any religious belief other than Christianity is wrong....don't see the movie
– Mercenaries killing each other for any reason bothers you (they are FORMER Marines – not current ones) ....don't go see the movie
– If you cannot tell the difference between fantasy and real life....don't go see the movie
– If you closely identify with corporate greed, exploitation of idigineous peoples, and violence used to achieve ends and feel that this movie is talking about you .....don't go see the movie.
For all the rest of us, it is a really well told tale about a planet of blue people and their victory over an invading force, which happens to be human. Enjoy.
I don't recall Dances with Wolves having this type of reaction from the conservatives. And yet Avator's storyline is a near carbon copy of that story line. Of course the obliteration of Native Americans was primarily due to the greed and lies and brutality of our ancestors. Do those same conservatives wish to refute this as well?
This article is a proof that idiots exist or creativity of the human mind....how did you come up with this!!! just curious....
When conservatives say it is anti-religion it is only because it is not PRO-CHRISTIANITY. When they say it is anti-military it is only because they desperately need it to be. Though it is clear to anyone with a brain that the military force are MERCENARIES not US Marines, conservatives so need it to be the US Marines to leverage their argument against this movie that all conservative blogs totally ignore the facts.
What's wrong with being anti-military or anti-religion?
So what?
Can't art be whatever the hell it wants to be?
Isn't freedom of speech/expression a fundamental right?
If this movie somehow shatters someones faith... well... ... ... how???
By the way, I'm a happy atheist, raised Lutheran, and didn't realize the movie even mentioned Christianity, and the Indians... ahem... Aliens had their "religion" portrayed glowingly.(sometimes literally)
That is all.... ...
I see WAY too many people with WAY too much time on their hands! GET HOBBIES!! I'm a disabled Viet Nam Navy vet and I like to think I did some small part in preserving this country's principles....however...I'm wondering if the First Amendment should really apply to all of you.
it is amazing how many people and groups read so much crap into a true entertainment experience, as produced by the genius James Cameron. This movie is and example of mindblowing Entertainment. That is all it is. A wonderful movie.

"Yes, I was very depressed after the movie. I like the creation of the world and the special events but when the war started, it was anti-everything American-way too far left for me. Marine killing other marines, unthinkable. Colonel says 'How does it feel to kill your own kind?" He responded by killing him. I would never ever want to see the movie again."
Pat Tilman was deliberately shot in the head 3 times by friendly fire of an American sniper. The Army lied about the events and changed their original story, at least twice. I wonder where the "green light" to execute came from?
You felt depressed?? The movie was fantasy. For Tilman and his family, reality is far worse.
Yes Conservatives – not worth commenting on. This was a "gorgeous" looking movie, the plot is weak but Marines are the bad guys – wow....
Lets not forget that Mr. Cameron is a Canadian boy and I never have been so proud to be Canadian then after watching this film.
Bravo Mr. Cameron
avatar is a great movie. the culture is filled with faith. whats wrong with peace? the movie's just antiwhite. get over it.
The reason it is considered "anti-religion" is because Sigourney Weaver's character describes the Navi's god as essentially a biological super computer, thereby taking away the Navi god's deity (or godhood if you will). In other words, people are upset because of Cameron's destruction of the religion of the Navi, not its difference from our religions.
As for the anti-military, I can see where it makes the military look bad, but I agree that it is more anti-mercenary ala Blackwater et al.
I agree that most of the anti-religion and anti-military complaints probably stem from conservatives who have not seen the movie for themselves, but honestly they are no different from the people who complain about the book in the "Book of Eli" being the Bible.
Oh, and for the person who used China as an example of a country that is officially athiest.... 1. Religious freedom is banned in China because it is a communist country. You can be arrested for trying to bring a Bible, or any religious book for that matter, into the country. 2. Nevertheless, Christianity is growing faster in China than anywhere else in the world and China also has a very large Buddhist population.
People say "anti-faith" like that's a bad thing. All it means is that we don't subscribe to make-believe. Religion is the root of all evil. It amazes me that in 2010 people still subscribe to fairy tales written 2000 years ago. How can any modern human being still believe in magic and superstition? For the anti-science people all I can say is go to school and educate yourself.
Rosebud, you're a riot.. Yes, by all means, let the Dogmatists make a billion dollar movie.. 😉
The movie is just realistic. Don't we displace human beings from their environments, frequently by force, to exploit our planet resources? That's what happens in Africa and South America
hahaha,, I can't help laughing at the world..Troy, you're right.. and this is all such silly chitter chatter. Everybody knows Republicans can't think, and they are all from states anyway, with the lowest IQ's..
..and the Republican manifesto wants to keep it that way,, looks like their doing a good job, all in the name of God! Their God.. $$$$$$!!!
And hey, they'd like nothing better than to 'do it to you'!
Laughing all the way to the bank they are...
Wait for my essay, except it could be awhile, cause I have work to do that is really constructive; it involves love and forgiveness, and non judgement, and peace on earth,, you know, all those anti Christian and Anti American things..!!!
I recall a Usenet News posting from more than 15 years ago where there was a discussion about the existence of life on other planets. One of the extreme religious guys posted that if he met an alien, the first thing he would ask is if the alien believed on the lord Jesus Christ as his savior. If the alien said no, we should consider them hostile!
The film is clearly anti-military and anti-corporate. After all all but a handful of the soldiers and all the corporate types are presented as one-dimensional bullies who don't think twice about killing the natives.
And to me, that simplistic approach was the one thing about the film that bothered me. It weakened the value of the film to have all the characters be so cardboard black and white.
But the film was in no way anti-religious. In fact, my guess is that you could compare the belief system of the Navi to much of what you find in Hinduism and Buddhism - as well as Native American.
The problem is that traditional Christian theology is very much "our way or the highway" when it comes to religions. So any film that is about worshiping nature will be branded as anti-religious or even Satanic by those of a more fundamentalist perspective.
They don't mean anti-religion, they mean anti-Christian. What they need to accept is that "religion" can be anything the believer says it is. No matter what kind of wacky religious beliefs I adhere to, (like voodoo, Wiccan, or something new I make up), it is just as legitimate as Christianity under the constitution (Jesus is not in there), and really no more wacky than the Amish, or Mormons, or the Church of Scientology. Pat Robertson says God talks to him. Ok. God talks to me too. He says Pat Robertson is an idiot. My claim is just as relevant as anything Pat says. It was Pocohantas with 10 foot tall indians. It made the white guys look bad. Do did Dances With Wolves. Go see something else or just sit in your trailer in front of your AM radio and repeat over and over, "Ditto".
Conservatives should be protecting the fundamentals of our country–free speak, freedom of/from religion, freedom of expression. I grow tired of "conservatives" feeling threatened by difference and expression of difference. Get over yourselves "conservatives" and start protecting what makes (or used to make) this country great.
I think we should all keep in mind the people in Avatar were not the military. It was a military contractor paid for by a private company. Big difference.
It's a friggin movie for pete's sake! Enjoy the show, don't go or walk out, it is that simple. Trying to put a spin on this movie shows that people have too much time on their hands! Go do something constructive . . .
So if a foreign corporation wanted your land and they hired some ex-marines to kill you, would you fight back? If you would, then apparently you're anti-American and anti-military.
I think Pam is correct. I would like to know how many people saw Avatar as opposed to Titanic. To say that Avatar made so much money is not thinking that movie ticket prices are more than double from the time of Titanic.
Wow, David Gillis, a seemingly intelligent conservative! You're an oxymoron!!!
It's a movie, get over it Liberal idiots.
OMG-how stupid can you "no wars ever started by an athiest or agnostic" Have you ever learned about Hitler or Stalin or Mao? I bet you are the wonderful receipent of a liberal education. All 3 of those dictators were athiests-Hitler an occult follower and the other two died in the wool athiests. Between the 3 of them they killed more people than ALL of religious wars times 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I find many so called Christians to be basically hypocrites and are delusional enough to think if you do not fallow their ways, which are many different ways, you will go to h*ll.
How can they all be right?
MY 3RD grader loved it and he still likes God and soliders. go figure
I'm conservative, and I thought it was a wonderful visual experience. I saw it as very spiritual, and don't see how that makes it anti-religion. I have the utmost respect for the military.
I think this reflects our country's history more than anything. Didn't we kill a bunch of native people so American people could have all the good land?
Um, i guess these critics have nothing better to do with their time? Anti-faith? Oh, you mean anti-christian i guess, because these characters have INCREDIBLE faith. God forbid it is not the christian faith. move on, and appreciate the beautiful concepts so gracefully displayed in this film!!!!
Good point, Larry. Just remember, though, that not ALL conservatives are like that. Just the thoughtless ones that mindlessly support whatever their local Republican says. I'm sure that there's people like that in both parties. One last thing; not all conservatives are as oversensitive about what's in a movie.
That's allright by me!!
As stated in several of the above comments, Avatar is not necessarily anti-military. The soldiers are not military, they're mercenaries hired by the evil, power-hungry corporation. So let's agree to its anti-big business view. I do have questions regarding the Nav'i, themselves. All the periperal fauna shown in the movie: horseish beasts of burden, dragonlike flying creatures, ape-like creatures seen briefly swinging through the trees etc. have six limbs. As a believer in the logical process of evolution, not creationism (no magic or miracles required), it seems illogical that the Nav'i have only four limbs, not counting their tails, which I expect are useful for maintaining balance while maneuvering through the trees that make up their habitat. So the only explanation for their paucity of limbs is if someone's universal God, who apparenly creates all sentient life in his (humanlike) image, pointed at Pandora and said "Let there be Nav'i."
This film looks more like an updated Cowboys and Indians than anything anti-military or anti-religion. Guns vs bows and arrows.
Great flick. Not to take too seriously.
Perhaps Mr. Cameron could have ended "Avatar" like he did "Aliens". The humans fall back and nuke the Na'vi from space. Ripley would have liked it! I'ts a movie, people, not an exercise in oppression by the evil Right....I'm a conservative....I LOVED the movie....would've nuked 'em from space.....NO, this is not your land...this is MY land....HAH! Try to enjoy the movie for what it is, and don't turn it into your next political battleground....
I have yet to see the movie, but, based on the comments I see here, if the director want to make an anti military comment.. fine... freedom of speech. Likewise if he wants to make an anti religious comment.. equally covered in freedom of speech. Not every thing has to be supportive of religion, or politics, or military, or anything else you or your friends believe in. Others are going to believe differently than you, no matter what you believe to be true, and they have the right to, and the right to say so.
okay – I had to come back and read what's been written since i checked in last nite...
And the thing is -
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!!!!!
I am certain there will be be self pronounced "critics" with something else to blabber about in a stupid attempt to get noticed. I also think maybe they weren't breast fed as toddlers....;-)
You poor, critically-thinking challenged fools! (you know who you are) It's only a movie, it's only a movie, it's only a movie.................. Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth; and the truth is, there is no god! not here, not there, not anywhere. Religions were thought up and perpetuated by the aristocracy (in the very broad sense) to control the ignorant masses. And hey, it’s been working for them pretty well so far.
It's unfortunate that this movie is NOT anti-military or anti-religion, those are two fantastic messages that the whole world should hear. How dare anyone even suggest world peace!!! That is not the American way!!!
Currently we have white people and black people trying to kill brown people, I guess this movie just hits a little too close to home for some.
I wouldn't say the move is "anti-military". It is, however, anti-using-force-to-take-what-you-want, anti-he-who-has-the-gold-makes-the-rules, anti-soulless-corporation, and anti-preemptive-military-strike-if-you-feel-it's-vaguely-justified. As several other commenters noted, the main character is successful largely BECAUSE he has a military background, and actually has a sense of duty/honor/doing the right thing. If you feel this is anti-military, it's probably a reflection on what our army (and associated military-industrial complex) has been used for over most of the last decade.
And it may not be pro-Christian, but it's definitely not anti-religion. The 'bad guys' are cold-hearted capitalists who dismiss the natives' spiritual beliefs as worthless. A Buddhist or follower of Japanese Shinto would probably find the movie more aligned with their belief system.
Just because "some" conservatives think one way does not mean all of us agree with them. You guys need to calm down. Just like a few of you pointed out, "conservative" Fox news is number 1 watched, yet this movie is number 1 also, how would that happen unless not everyone who watches Fox is conservative and not all conservatives thinks like these morons here.
Just because the liberal speaker Nancy is an idiot does not mean of all liberals are, just the majority of you who are upset and posting here!
Get a life people.....................IT'S A MOVIE......................................
This is too dumb...ofcourse its a comment...its an idealized science fiction world, that acts as a parallel for the source of many social and political problems..religion military, etc.
I think your all missing the point, it's all about the Money.. Cameron is laughing all the way to the bank, he couldn't care less what anyone thinks, as long as they cough up the money for the ticket.. So folks get over it all..
Interesting how everybody identifies conservatism with militarism. Anybody read any history books lately? I'd say no.
100.000 + people have just died and you are debating a movie . According to the atheist and tree huggers; when do we obtain this higher intelligents plateau? If a movie can change your faith and stance in life then truly we (you) are a very shallow nation (person). and like the guy said it is a mmmmmooooovvvviiieeee. duhhhh.
Since when is anyone required to write stories or produce movies that speak to everyones beliefs? It seems as those attacking this movie think that somehow it should not have been made because it doesn't reinforce thier beliefs. Grow up, the many people in this world are not obligated to avoid affending you.
I think that there are not many movies that reinforce the conservative views because they just wouldn't make that much money. There don't seem to be many conservative Hollywood types these days. Maybe conservatism and creativity can't coexist anymore.
I likened this movie to what we did to the Native Americans but still didn't see it as anti-military. As was said in a previous post, we've been dealing with military issues all our history. I beleive the critics are yelling anti-military due to the turbulent times we are living in now.
As for being anti-religious, again I didn't see it as that and I do consider myself some what religious. This is a big universe God created for us and I do beleive there has to be other civilizations out there with wonders like we see in this movie. That does NOT make me anti-religious.
I think this movie is highly overated and everyone is giving the story line way too much credit/insight. Its not even original. Same premise as Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves but with amazing special effects. A glorified disney movie except this one was boring.
I don't see this as anti military at all. It is more anti mercenary . The soldiers , while yes are marines they are being used as a private army for a company , there is a huge difference. As to the anti religion part, I just don't see it .
Geezy Chreezy! It's a MOVIE! No doubt people are going to find whatever they want in it, and James Cameron is a lousey writer, but why do people want to attack a MOVIE intended for general entertainment? The conservatives have their panties *way* too far up their crack. Why don't they do something good and useful, like attacking Jersey Bore instead of wasting their time criticizing stuff like this? Some people don't have enough to do...
It's this subset of people whose passtime is hatred that is wrong with our country. If you really want to go to a place where a story that is at odds with mainstream religion can't be told or it's considered blasphemy to mock the military, go to Iran or Saudi Arabia.
Um, its not anit anything, its a freakin movie with amazing special effects. You people read way to much in things. why dont you all mnd your own business and just relax. watch a movie and then discuss it, but to start saying there is some sort of agenda by Mr Cameron is redonkulous. Its not ANIT anything like DOGMA is not ANTI-RELIGIOUS..

This was the most predictable, stupid movie I have ever seen. Yes, it was visually intriging. But the story of the "Great White Hope" that comes to save the poor ignorant natives is both racist and xenophobic. If I want to watch that story, I would go watch "Dances With Wolves". This film deserves technical kudos, and nothing more.
Anti-military – No. Anti-mercenary – ABSOLUTELY! Anti-religion? Ahemmm, the portrayed spiritual connection and devotion was pervasive. How could anyone other than unabashed zealots overlook it?
Wow, People really went and dissected this film that much? "it's anti-this, anti-that" can you say "get a life"? sheesh, it is a beautifuly rendered film that is supposed to keep you entertained for two and a half hours. If you are so obsessed that you have to break it down and find meaning in each leaf they show, invest in a psychiatrist because there is SOMETHING wrong with you.
My wife and I saw Avatar, we kept the 3D glasses, later on, and I found a chip in them that has recorded our every thought!
I put them on a farm animal cross the street and it telepathically told me this.
Our thoughts are being sent to FOX NEWS , which later be used by the conservatives when they take over the planet, or ttey to have Sara Palin elected to something.
Hey guess what? Avatar is a movie for entertainment. It doesn't HAVE to have any political or religious implications. People are just getting upset so that they can have something to complain about. This is one of the stupidest things I've heard lately. The movie was great and many intelligent people can take it for what it is : just a movie.
Avatar in a sanskrit word meaning – incarnation. This is very much synonymous with Hinduism, where the God(s) have taken multiple avatars (forms) to save the human race from evils in various forms during various ages (each age is like a 100K or a million years). In this movie our Jake Sully is the avatar who saves the Navi's planet and race from extinction when evil (read the human race) comes to their doorstep knocking down everything they believe in.
I have seen this movie and there is nothing anti-religion or anti-military in this. Again, it always lies in what angle we want to view things at and not everyone thinks in the same way.
