We Listen – Your comments 2/12/10

Editor's Note: Friday’s American Morning audience was intrigued by John Avlon’s segment about his new book "Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America." Viewers argued their opinions about appropriate "wingnuts" that didn’t make Avlon’s list, while disputing his choices.

  • Dan: Your equating Rep. Grayson with Rep. Bachman is the single most irresponsible thing I've ever heard on television. Grayson deals in facts and reality, whereas Bachman simply makes things up. I challenge you to fact check these folks before you label them as wing-nuts. Being passionate while being right is far different than being passionate and wrong. This is CNN's major problem – this insistence on equating one side with the other, while never identifying reality. Also, Olbermann may go over the top now and then, but again, he's dealing with reality while Beck is dangerously deluded. Or acts that way on TV. Please fact check what these people say before equating them. CNN's behavior in this matter makes you more dangerous to our nation's discourse than any of the partisan players. Try to identify reality and not just play he said/she said. It's your job.
  • Ellen: Redistricting is an excellent idea. But this segment was pathetic - a list of clichés, a false equation (Beck is not Olbermann), and that sad media idiocy in which he said, she said stands in for reporting. The only example he gave of unacceptable discourse on television was calling your opponents "racist." You two smile and nod - so there is no racism in our politics? Just terrible work, guys.
  • James: I appreciated the segment this morning (Friday) on Political Extremes. However, I was disappointed that your guest missed two of the most important items on this topic which makes me suspicious of his motives. (1) Right wing media extremism has a long history while left wing extremist media is quite recent. It came about as a reaction to the right wing "wing-nuts." (2) Right wing media extremists are numerous, even including an entire "news" network, FOX. I hope that these significant oversights will be corrected in the future in the quest for accuracy.

Are “fringe” groups “hijacking” American politics? Who do you think should be on the “wingnut” list? Send in your suggestions to John here.

CHERYL SHEPLEY. You are of course exactly right. However you are casting your pearls (i.e. the truth) before swine and idiots. Most of the elected republicans have no concern for the people, only regaining power. Unfortunately, many of their supporters don't seem to have the intellect to grasp the obvious.. they have thrown their support behind flag waving, bible thumping hypocrits and will not let facts get in the way. The republicans are willing to push any absurd lie, ignore the suffering of millions and are piss poor excuses for patriots.

If a majority of the american people are stupid enough to support the very people who deregulated the banks, lied us into a war, and were (and are) so completely corrupt... then they will deserve the meltdown they will get.

The NEWS is truly becoming passive entertainment. Except for Fox the Fear mongers. I had to watch 7 channels for 7 days to get the news that the Professor shooter's mother worked for the government when the Professor's shooting of her brother was covered up. I love TV, but rely on Blacklisted News. Even the Daily Beast had to put Tiger's porn stars smut story on the Cheat Sheet, as if we'd all want to read it. Please try harder CNN. Rachel is becoming the voice of reason. I would nominate AC for HERO for his Haiti coverage. But WHY aren't the TRUE

NEWS truly is becoming entertainment. Had to watch 7 stations for 7 days to get the details that the Professor shooter's mom worked in government when she shot her brother. And how are those REAL AMERICANS in the Dakotas recovering from the storm on their reservation??? PBS tries to cover the important stuff, but their funding has either been cut or they've been taken over by Monsanto. Sad. I go to Blacklisted News for world news, cause when Goldman can bring down Greece and the euro, US news becomes more than GOP accusations and the War of the Month. AC for HERO for Haiti coverage. Keep trying CNN...but Wingnuts are not on MSNBC. Rachel is so on and such a fighter for truth. Olberman is just fighting back at Fox and is brilliantly funny at times. CNN, you can do better, and thanks for the great Haiti coverage. Keep it up, cause they deserve some truth and help. They are all HEROS too, for managing to survive to weather & political manipulations. Did HARP affect the earthquake? I heard oil was discovered there, like Cuba.

I am writing with regard to American Morning's coverage of Sen, Bayh's retirement from the U.S. Senate. While you covered in loving detail Sen. Bayh's remark that the left wing was trying to take over the Democratic agenda, somehow you failed to note that the 7 senators who were original co-sponsors of the bill for a deficit reduction commission and later voted against it to kill the bill were all Republicans doing the GOP's dirty work. Very "fair and balanced."

Also, somehow the possibility has escaped you that Sen, Bayh who has $11 million in the bank; has run for President before; and sees public disgust with both parties is not holier than thou, but just might be positioning himself for a presidential bid as an independent. Very penetrating political analysis, CNN.

??? by the time my comment was posted the 3 original comments I referred to were gone. John had pointed out the irrational comparison Grayson to Bachman. Grayson is brilliant and Bachman, like Palin is relying on Divine intervention. There is no comparison.

All three comments so far expressed what I felt, especially John. Conservatives favorite word is FEAR. New research shows the difference between liberals and's FEAR. Their "startle & blink" reflexes show the fear. In addition, FAITH and GUNS (except for hunters) seem to be a contradiction. Maybe B vitamins and GABA would help them.

    Dear John Roberts,

I think the medicine you are referring to for cough and cold is called Pittman's Expectorant. We used to dispense it in my grandfather's drug store in Duncannon Pennsylvania in the 60's and 70's. It tasted awful but worked well as it contained a hefty dose of codine, and was available then without a perscription. It was the precursor to Robetussin with Codine. Thanks for the memory.

The cold product you were looking for in Canada is called "Buckley's". It has pine tree sap in it.

For the life of me, I don't understand why any of the news venues provide Cheney with an outlet for his vile opinions.

It's not like he has been proven to be any sort of prophet, or even an accurate source of information to this point!

For example, Iraq DID NOT have any "weapons of mass destruction"... Saddam DID NOT have anything to do with 9-11... the people of Iraq DID NOT greet our soldiers as "liberators"... many of the ideas and programs that Cheney espoused during his term as a phantom Vice President have been judged illegal and/or unConstitutional by the federal courts over the years... and the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans DID NOT result in a landslide of investment and new jobs over the past administration!

Why do REAL news people even listen to him, let alone broadcast his perpetual flow of bile?

Right and left wing-nuts have been around throughout our nation's history. Look at Thomas Jefferson and John Adams...wing-nuts.

I'd argue that left and right may as well be left and right oars which power this ship we call the United States. There's a great big middle to rudder us straight. Too much power to the right or left oar, and we travel in circles getting nowhere. We need everyone for the journey. Where are you?

Native American Children in South and North Dakota gravely need your help with food, medicine, shelter and many of them have no power while the horrific blizzard sweeps over their reservations.

Navajo Background: "Centuries of abuse and neglect of the original inhabitants of what is now the United States has not ended. Our reservations are still like third world countries. When massive ice storms and high winds hit the reservations in the Dakotas mid January poor housing, weak heating systems, sparse cupboards, lack of warm clothing and health problems make it difficult to survive. Add to that a utilities infrastructure that was brought to its knees on the Cheyenne River Reservation when 3000 poles and power lines came down from 6 inches of ice weight also crippling the water system. Ongoing storm conditions hampered repair. The reservation has been without power since Jan. 21st and Federal funds are still weeks away".

The LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Home Assistance) programs ran out of winter funding in early December.

There is a word in the English language that means "obtain money by threat or abuse of authority". This would seem to be the appropriate word to describe the Republican obstruction of the creation of job opportunities by the government, by demanding Corporate tax reduction. That word is "extortion". This practice is comparable to a poll tax, an illegal practice. However, in government, this falls into the category called "privilege", reserved for the wealthy and powerful. This abuse provides the Republicans with every opportunity to block fair wages, health care, advanced and even lower educational opportunities, from access by the Americab people. They need to be taken to court over this, as People are legally more deserving than Corporations of provision under the law. Unfortunately, our Supreme Court conservative appoibtees have debased themselves, and compromised the rights of the American people, by given our rights to lifeless entities that serve the will of the American aristocracy. The Constitution was created for the PEOPLE, not for artificial creation of greedy minds for whom there is never enough wealth. This extortionary practice by the Republican Party is unethical and illegal and the validity of this practice must be addressed. "Because I can" is not an acceptable reason for this obstruction of real justice. It is unacceptable for the children of some Americans to be privileged and pampered by excessive opportunities for their nourishment, health care, education, health care and job opportunities while others go cold, hungry, homeless, undereducated, without health care is an abomination. To leave the future of our children barren by the domination of one political party is a sinful waste and this country can no longer afford to be wasteful. The Constitution is about to be bastardized by the Corporate beneficiaries in the same manner by which Corporate Christians prostituted Jesus Christ for their own financial and political gain. These people have no shame, because they have no conscience. We need to put an end to this, now!

It is the good wingnuts being put in the same basket as the bad wingnuts that is confusing. We just went to one doctor who covered it all decades ago but now the doctor is broken down into specialities. Just as the Peoples blindly followed leaderships but the Peoples themselves, like the doctor, is being broken down into specialities. Can you see that John?

Peoples still under the condition to vote as their empoyer voted decades ago and that conditioning lingers today yet we see it breaking away with these fringe groups. Democratic and Republican Party are in representation more of Industry and Finance over the wellness and wellbeing of the Peoples..

Rush Limpblahhhh....more fitting position for him would be on a spit with an apple in his mouth..not in a Rush...
