House members report increased threats since vote

By Carol Costello, CNN

(CNN) – Some conservatives have made pro-life Congressman Bart Stupak a verb.

Stu-packed. Definition? Betrayed. And, for some, that sense of betrayal has become visceral. Ever since the health care reform bill passed the House of Representatives, angry, and sometimes threatening calls, have been coming into Stupak’s office.

A sample: “You are a cowardly punk, Stupak. That’s what you are. You and your family, scum.” Another caller left this message: “Go to hell, you piece of ***t!”

Stupak has also received thousands of letters and faxes. One fax shows a picture of a noose, with the words, “All baby killers come to unseemly ends, either by the hand of man or the hand of God.”

The calls and letters kept coming as Stupak and other pro-life Democratic lawmakers gathered Wednesday to witness President Obama sign an executive order. An order, pro-life Democrats insist, confirms the ban on federal funding for abortions in the new health care law.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, a pro-life Democrat from Ohio, says the mood was “joyous,” with “everybody clapping.”

Kaptur has experienced some push-back for her support of the health care bill too, but not like Stupak. She finds it disturbing, and says it has little to do with the abortion issue. “There were a lot of individuals who didn’t want this bill at all, and I think that’s where the vitriol is coming from,” says Kaptur.

Stupak is getting hammered on other fronts too. The Republican Texas Congressman Randy Neugebauer, who interrupted Stupak on the House floor with cries of “baby killer,” is using the incident in a sort of campaign ad on his Web site. In the ad, Neugebuer says, “You know what? I am never going to quit speaking on behalf of the unborn.”

In Michigan, the little-known Republican running against Stupak in 2010 suddenly has thousands of friends on his Facebook page. Dr. Dan Benishek is richer, too. He says in the past two days he’s received $60,000 in campaign donations.

The Tea Party Express will also make its way to Michigan and Stupak’s district, not because of the abortion issue, but because of Stupak’s vote for health care reform, “[that will] burden the American people with even more debt and even more government control.”

Sister Simone Campbell, a progressive Catholic, feels for Stupak. She and other Catholic nuns came out in favor of health care reform. She is getting hammered too.

“One person called me a baby killer,” she says.

She met with Rep. Stupak on Wednesday to offer him comfort.

“He followed his conscience,” she says. “That’s all we’re asked to do. To be faithful. And I’m so grateful to him being faithful, and I know it is very hard. It’s a big price to pay.”

This is nothing more than a smear campaign. The lib left takes a few rumors and a few isolated incidents and tries to brand an entire movement. Since the beginning our movement has been targeted by the left in order to shove down their socialist adgenda down our throats. not just by media, but by the politicians themselves. We have been ignored, branded traitors for not supporting obamas destructive adgenda, called teabaggers, racist, domestic terrorists and other derogetory names all by the left. The left seem to think they have sole claim to protesting. This bill was shoved up our butts. it WILL hurt us, just like EVERYother socialist welfare program the govt controls. But people are so blind and so self entitled they dont want to see that. This was passed by devious means and COMPLETLY against the will of the people. Now they are looking to destroy our country more with amnesty and crap n trade. Where does all this money come from? esp in a major recession? And you libs cant see why we are upset and think we are unreasonable for not wanting to pay for you. right now these threats are a few unrelated people definatly not related to any real teaparty movement. however you need to understand we will not surrender and we will fight. we are trying to be diplomatic, but we dont have to be. We are peaceful but firm, you want proof, if the tea party movement was truly violent as libs want to claim, then there would be no way for you to stand against us. remember this.

I totally believe in health care for all Americans, but I adamantly oppose THIS bill. It is onerous. It cannot be sustained. It strips us of our Liberty as much as the PATRIOT Act. People wanted the "reform" so badly, they forgot that it is never a good idea to judge a book by its cover.
To all of you who blindly support this, we will all reap what you have sown. You believe it's for the greater good, but you have been duped. You have sold our right of self-determination for 30 pieces of silver, which were borrowed from China.
P.S. For all of you who continue to play the race card, your ignorance is showing. This is about the death of our precious Republic.

Where are we in this country? It is so scary, not because we see things from different lenses, but how we respond when we can not get our way. We have a process, we vote freely. It looks like we have many terrorist among us carrying the American flag. It appears that Republicans are not use to coming up short. They could have worked on healthcare, but took all their marbles home. I ask them to dust off and get up and work for our great country. Don't tear it down to get back into power. If they continue to destroy this country to gain political control they will find that they will be controling a state of anarchy.... Things will be more out of hand. Do we want this or do we want to be proud Americans?

My God! what a bunch of myopic, self-righteous leftist on this blog.
There is alot of anger from "Constitutionalist" towards those representatives who have trashed the Constitution in favor of enslaving the electorate via the Health Care bill. Is there any doubt among you that your freedom will be exchanged for your ability to participate in a redistrubution of wealth mandated and administered by the same folks who take care of the DMV on a state level and the SS, medicare and other failed programs on a Federal level? You have chosen to go from a broken system to to one already acknowledged to be a failure; your federal government. The crowd in the House and Senate sold us out and we are as mad as hell for all good reason. All your protest to the contrary are unfounded and most partisan. It seems to you are willing to drink the cool aid of self-destruction rather than admitt the health care bill as signed by Obama is an atrocious plan with negative potentials of historical proportions. Have any of your read the bill? Have any of your representatives stated they had read it? Mine did not read it and said she would when those portions are to be inacted. What a bamboozle! And all you bloggers are upset that others are so upset. Go figure!

the destruction of the US economy was due totally to the Dick and George show not the current administration so get real!, and as far as the US Constitution being dismantled where were you when bush and cheny took it upon themselves to declare war on another country a power that ONLY the us congress holds, and when they started to tap our phone conversations??? you people slay me, you only parrot what limbaugh, beck and coulter tell you to parrot!!! dont you have minds of your own? this is a perfect example of why we need to educate our population. why do we always have enough money for war and never enough for education?? this is a very sick society indeed.

I do not condone the threats. However, when people are pushed enough they are going to explode. This nations for over 70 years has been heading for an explosion, due to the government and it's control. I am American. I love this country and her history and what she STOOD for. People are finally saying enough is enough. I know that our Founding Fathers are turning over in their graves and screaming and yelling at us for destroying what they worked so hard to create. Marxism stated that the western world could not be destroyed by force, but needs to be destroyed from the inside. The person that founded Planned Parenthood and funds the NEA was a Marxist. Now, we have the auto, bank, education and health industries being dictated by the government. If that is not close to socialism; then what is. If people do not stand up soon there will no longer be an America.

If the Democrats and Republicans want the public to act in a civilized way shoudn't they set the example. What is the difference between the way they act toward one another and the way some of the public is responding. I do not condone the violence but the threats from the public just mimic what Obama and the other Democratic leaders did to there fellow congressmen to get their way.

we finaly have a president thats trying too do good for the american ppl 7 we have the nerve to act in this (none) manner. mabe if was a lyer like g.w. bush that in his 8 years cost us trillions of dollars in a area of the world that will never like us americans & in a war of religion that americans have always stated not to be part of so i think if obama is spending trillions on us as a nation good for him at least he hasn't lied about it !!!!

Let's give free-reign to the royal government on health care. They've done such a wonderful job of destroying the US economy, the US education system, the US Constitution, the American way of life so many peoples risk life and limb just to have an opportunity at God given liberty..Our government does NOT produce anything. The hard working risk takers that make this country what it should be are the un-sung heroes called everyday Joes.

I can understand how millions of people would be upset about the way the health care issue was handled – deals, deals, deals! Out of millions there are also some rebels – Democrats, Republicans independants or all those right or left. The Republicans did not lose, the people lost . How many of you can really believe that we are going to offer health care to millions more people and reduce the deficit? What ever happened to tort reform and the good ideas to save us money to reform our health care. Everyone wants reform so I can't believe what I am hearing from some of your comments – you are doing the blame game – there are lots of haters comments HERE!

Question for the Religious groups. Is it ever okay to get an abortion? If the mother's life was in danger? If there is a heart beat, but no brain activity? When a 13 year girl is raped or molested by her father, uncle, or brother and gets pregnant? I work with abused and neglected children, and I also see how the orphanages or over crowed, how 15 millions children go to bed hungry, and you guys are over seas making commercials for everyone to send you guys money to help the starving children in those countries, and in the mean time, they never see a penny of it. You keep the money to build up your churches which are now looking more like palaces, and the alter gets higher and higher so that everyone is looking up to the preacher. I do not think abortion is right for those who walk into a clinic because she is upset at her boyfriend or just isnt ready, instead of using protection. But I wouldnt bomb, kill, or threaten anyone because of my belief.

Why are any of you surprised?

When an angry mob, that are whipped up by propaganda, and feel they are messengers of God act out who is to blame. My feeling it is the responsibility of the organizers and cheerleaders who got the very reaction they wanted.

We have had 9+ years of Republican hate mongering and lying and now we can clearly see the results of mind washing rhetoric.

Most of this is code for a dislike by the right for the US being lead by a black man. The now have their devil on the domestic front replace the devils in foreign countries and they are making the most of it.

No matter what the Dems do the rhetoric will now be they made "sleazy" deals. John McCain should be ashamed of his self aggrandizing antics. He lost the election fair and square. He is just mad that he could not find a way to steal the election like Bush II did.

For 8 years the Republicans raped and drained this country dry, with a unfunded War in Iraq passing Legislation that hurt ordinary Americans. Passing the Illegal Patriot Act that takes liberties from Americans. My question is where were all these Tea Party Activist when this was happening? When we now have a President who is looking out for us then they buck against it. This is a shame how selfish and Racist this country is, we should be happy that we have someone in Washington looking out for us. But no I guess the people liked getting raped and messed over by the Republicans. This crap need to stop because its a Terrorist Act, the Terrorist will see how divided this country is and take advantage of this wake up American and see what's really going on.

Since I moved to SW Ohio, the 'victim' is often the perpetrator of the deed when it comes to political and social issues.
    There is a trend.
Take the words of Congressman Steve Driehaus with a grain of salt.

It is clear to most people, that we are paying the republicans to do nothing and oppose everything, what value does that bring to the nation? they are inciters and instagators, then step back like they had no part in it. My question is what can be done legally, and what can the FBI do about this. If this was under the Bush administration, they would invoke the patriot act, and go after these people. The only ones that appear to be out of touch is GOP. The more information is shared with the public about the bill the more the public likes. It is a starting point.

Yes, and for you Republicans. This summer I will be out campaigning hot and heavy for the Democrats for they are for the people the Republicans you held the house for 8 years and did not do one thing for the people, but get us into war, and let the banks go nuts with other peoples money, and let millions of jobs leave the country. Where were the Republicans then? Apparently they were in back rooms making deals. Republicans are only for the rich only, not for the average person. Republicans don't like the idea that a black person brought Americans together, I'm white I decided when I was high school that everyone is equal when I talk to a person I see a human no color. I trust President Obama, no way would I ever trust John Beighnor, McCain, or Palin with my future or my life.

I can't believe what i am seeing going on in your country. Why do you have a government, A lot of the American ppl don't know what domocracy is, yet your in other countries trying to teach it to them. God help us all when these other countries run their governments like the Americans do. I never seen so much stupidty in all my life. The ppl that are making threats, why dont they run for congress. The American ppl are destroying your own country and then they have the nerve to come to Canada and spread the hate to us like Sarah Pallin and Ann Coulter. Shame on our government for letting them come in here and get away with it and trying to brainwash Canadians. Your over destroying other drugs in other countries and want to leagalize it in the States. lol. This is just showing how backwards you are. I can see for medical reasons but you make laws to stop smoking cigarettes then want to let ppl buy pot, there is no sense to this at all other than making big revenue. You can put an age of 21 but do you really think it will only be ppl over 21 smoking it. Don't you learn from past mistakes.
PS. Ann Coulter should keep her hate in the states where it belongs, not in Canada. Our country does not have the hate towards different races like you do in the States . I think she has a nerve and expect to get a warm welcome from us. We have respect towards other nationalities and religions . There was no reason on earth for her to talk to the muslim girl like that .People in other countries just laugh at the States because of people like Ann Coulter and Sarah Pallin.

Yes, there are problems with the health-care plan the congress passed, but nothing that cannot be fixed if BOTH sides would only,(gasp!), work together. C'mon beaurorats, aren't you in Washington to work th will of the people? When was the last time anyone ever heard of a congreecritter actually listen to the average citizen? Not in the last 25 years or longer.

Its seems to me that those on the right seem to justify their actions by pointing fingers at the left , I for one Im very a shame for the actions our elected reps have shown the past year I do feel their should have been more done a year ago to cool the flame not egg the situation on Palin should be a shamed of her behavior I would like to know why it seems to be ok to make threats like she and others have made people know how to read between the lines, I have always told my children you treat people how you would like to be treated instead we seem to just turn a blind eye to things and go on with our day like its normal is this what our country has come to, I Cant believe adults act like this I couldnt believe what I saw on the news over the weekend when I seen GOP members holding that flag to the crowd I call that egging on the situation but yet they think this is ok its justified because the left said this about Bush or ect– Are you people serious get real you teach people how to treat you and you do lead by example,
Im so sick of its my right coming out of people mouth This is how we show the world on how we americans treat one another we should be a shamed no wonder young people today are out of controll,

I agree that the democrats and republicans should get a peace pipe and fill it with marijana and then maybe they could discuss things that are important to Americans and our country and be civil about it. John Beighnor is a very bad example for a representative for all people he is only interested with his party and their veiws only. Palin, McCain, and Beighnor are not the kind of people that Americans need! Talking about back room deals the republicans have always done back room deals, they are a very untrusting group of people. The things that Palin and Beighnor are doing are terriost acts if I was doing what they are doing I'd be arrested.
They are also inducing panic. Make pot legal in all states so I can grow it and sell it I lost my job in manufacturing and theres not any jobs out except truck driving. I need to have an income too. I worked 32years in manufacturing, I started working when I was 12 I want to keep my house.

The Republicans just can't come to grips with the fact they lost! Now we can get a glimpse of the hate that motivates them and the large health insurance companies they appear to represent, because they certainly don't represent the people any longer! Look at the people who are the most distressed about this and you will find they have big money ties with the Health Care Industry!

well honestly, no matter what the politicains are being treatened for, it is in fact apart of a risk the take in there jobs. everyone has risks in there jobs, this is part of something they need to deal with. if they have enough "courage" to voice theese radical opinions, and pass laws that effect the entire nation, then they should be able to handle there treats, wheater it is right for indiduals to treaten them or not.

The Republican party must understand that when they speak (babyKiller) they are people out there who live on the fringe of society and they are radicals who take in this nonsense and act on it..
To threaten, to fax a copy of a noose to a african american leader is not about healthcare, its about hate , pure and simple..

Since these Tea PArty & republican idiots are so intent on "following the constitution", here is a clasue in the Sedition Act of July 14,1798, which is still in force, and it reads:
To write, print, utter or publish, or cause it to be done, or assist in it, any false, scandalous, and malicious writing against the government of the United States, or either House of Congress, or the President, with intent to defame, or bring either into contempt or disrepute, or to excite against either the hatred of the people of the United States, or to stir up sedition, or to excite unlawful combinations against the government, or to aid or encourage hostile designs of foreign nations.

Any elected official and/or and tea party person who promotes the above, by word, deed or acqueience, should be immediately arrested, jailed ( 6 months to 5 years) and fined the minium of $5000 sas stated in the Sedition Act.
If we were "legally" at war, the above charge would then be Treason and punishbale by the death sentence.
Enough of the temper tantrums and temper snits! Grow up or get out office and let a mature, reasonable adult do the country's business.

I cannot believe we are living in a time when it is OK for people who disagree with others to publically spout this stream of hate. I believe when leaders like Sarah Palin places targets over states and Mitt Romney openly calls the President of the United States a liar on a nationally viewed television show, they must be held responsible for much of what is happening. People in their party look to them for leadership, and I believe they have let their party down. They must realize their moral responsibility in their role of leardership. I will never again be a part of a party that cannot calmly share their views and allow others to disagree, The Rupublican Party desperately needs leadership who realizes their moral imperative as a leader. How far we will we as a nation stoop all in the name of politics?

I get the sense from the Republican leadership and the healthcare related violence that if you understand the source of angry, then violence is “acceptable” …. Is that why Al qaeada still exists? And by the way, where are all the religious leaders who should be calling for calm and peace and love for your fellow man? Hypocrites to the end!

The Republicans know not saying anything to stop the threats and acts of violence, is just as bad and insighting them to do it. These acts of violence need to be brought to the public's attention by way of the media. The criminals should be prosecuted and any politicians that are actively promoting this barbaric behavior should be removed from office. We have made too many accomplishments as a country to be dealing with being on the dawn of civil war. We needed some type of health care reform as it is difficult for me to afford my own healthcare. I was meeting with a friend of a lady yesterday whom has a daughter that is 17 years old daughter that has a tumor on her brain. This past Sunday she had a stroke while in church, her mom has no insurance and can not afford the surgery.

I find it interesting that all of this attention because some people, allegedly from the right, are vitriolic toward Stupak. This attention was not the same (it was actually non existent) when he was getting threats that were incited by people like Rachel Maddow for his "blocking health reform" as she put it. Who's to say that these people aren't one in the same. There is a concerted effort to discredit and destroy the Tea Party movement by the far left and the White House.
Where was the attention when a black conservative was beaten by SEIU goons in Missouri? I have yet to hear the video of the alleged racial slurs. In this age of cellphones with video recording capabilities and all of the camcorders, someone had to have recorded it if this did, in fact happen. I'm not taking these incidents at face value because there is a left slant with little to no objectivity on how they are being reported.

The amount of hate hasn't been seen since the civil rights movement. It seems to be a
manifestation of white peoples hatered towards black people and poor people in general
. Hopefully God will prevail and the hyprocricsy will stop. Why can't we have a natioal healthcare system? Hoa's are acceptable, but don't let the government do something good for us.

I think the entire premise of everyone being civil in society at all times is a bit unreal. Inasmuch as we expect better from the so called leaders, they sadly need more negative attention to be marginally relevant to their voting base. All miscreants should be treated like everyone else who breaks the law of the land. If anyone follows through on any threat they should be dealt with the fullest power of government. These miscreants need a-hiding

Wealth is always available for needs and priorities at homes and governments.
When will we realize that "HEALTH" is........ a need, priority AND wealth?

When we don't believe in a revolution we call it Terrorism.

Revolution is the final act of disagreement from a people unheeded towards a power unresponsive.

Real Christians belief that Pro-Life is a Lifetime commitment; not a 9 Month span. In the next ten years in America a HALF MILLION uninsured Americans will DIE without the removal of money changers in the Healthcare system. If a HALF-MILLION DEATH's don't qualify as a GENOCIDE of poor Americans; WHAT DOES? PRO-LIFE or PRO-PROFITS

This situation is making me extremely upset as well as concerned at the moment...Such behavior is apalling and riotious; and is potentially the start of deeper violence. For anyone, regardless of their political views, this should raise a red flag; the inciting 'pokes' of higher-seated Republicans have no reasoning or excuse!!! Just because Republicans and Democrats have different views does not mean that ALL their ideas are evil. Centrism, PLEASE!

Cant understand the Americans..They want health care and then when someone does something about it they break windows and cut propane lines. All you heard was the sick saying I cant afford my medications or chemo and now they are upset....republicans are nasty, John McCain included...oh please I say

In regard to the threats the democrats are receiving; The only threat they should take serious is the threat at the ballot box come November. What they are saying is " We shoved this health care reform down your throats, now keep quiet and live with it." We know better than you what is good for you.
