I developed lactose intolerance later in life. It's not too bad, but I definitely can't eat as much dairy as I used to. There are three things that have helped me.
    1) raw milk. I live in a state that has a licensed raw milk dealer. In addition to being unpasteurized it is also unhomogenized. I never have any problems with this milk.

    2) powdered milk. I definitely have very little stomach problems with it. I use NIDO, which you can find in Hispanic grocery stores.

    3) Kefir or yogurt. Kefir is a fermented milk drink a much like yogurt. At the first sign of an upset stomach caused by lactose intolerance, I drink a cup and it removes all symptoms. I also drink it preemptively after a high dairy meal to prevent any problems. I always make sure to have at least two bottles of Kefir in the fridge. (Because of this I've never used Lactaid). You can find it at any health food place or Trader Joes (possible Whole Foods). I like Trader Joe's brand the best because it is a good price but all brands taste the same to me.
