Air Force launches space plane on secret mission

(CNN) – A mystery, unmanned space plane operated by the Air Force is orbiting the earth. Its mission in space is top-secret.

The spacecraft, dubbed the X-37B, lifted off last night from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Military officials say the launch was a success, but they won't say much else. Our Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr has the report.

If the new space plane is just the next generation of shuttle type experimentation and science, then why has it been shrouded in secrecy? The secrecy of the project was not necessary if the project is simply to be used for non-military science? Secrecy most usually involves conspiracy. We will of course need something to replace the satellites in space as they get destroyed in the strategic battle for control of Earth. What is next for Iran? A satellite destroying laser that can be fired from Earth? Mankind needs to halt the space race and develop Earth based communication systems that are much less vulnerable than machines floating in Earth orbit without protection.
