BP deploys second box to control massive oil leak
(CNN) – BP is lowering a second oil containment box in an effort to stop a weeks-long oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, the oil company said.
A larger containment vessel was unsuccessful in stopping the flow of oil from the gusher about 5,000 feet underwater. The spill is sending 210,000 gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico each day.
Called "top hat," the 5-foot-tall, 4-foot-diameter structure weighs less than two tons. The structure is being deployed by the drill ship Enterprise.
BP built the smaller dome after a much larger, four-story containment vessel designed to cap the larger of two leaks in the well developed glitches Saturday. Ice-like hydrate crystals formed when gas combined with water and blocked the top of the dome, making it buoyant. Read more
Would you consider boycotting BP?
There's a growing cry today both online and along the Gulf Coast to boycott BP. More protests are planned for today. Yesterday, the anti-war group Code Pink heckled the oil executives right before the hearings, holding up signs reading "BP kills" and "BP = bad people."
In South Florida, demonstrators carried "mobile oil slicks" in the form of large black plastic tarps that were placed along sensitive areas of Miami Beach. This environmental nightmare is now a full-blown public relations disaster for the British oil giant.
Sound off: Would you consider participating in a boycott of BP? We want to hear from you this morning. Add your comments to the LIVE blog below and we'll read some of them on the show.

Gas stations buy product from the closest and cheapest supplier. A BP station transport may go to an Exxonn, Sunoco or Marathon terminal, just because its close. You could be buying anyone of those companies refined products. The only thing that is different is the 'recipe' that is blended at the terminal rack. Most gas stations are independently owned and operated. You aren't hurting the oil company when you don't shop there (the margins on a gallon of gas ar $.04-$.07), you are hurting the small business owner who makes money from the convenience store side of things.
Every day we are reminded by your news cast the state of our hurting economy, you graciously provide creative ways of communicating what is happening in America, but commenting on someone’s character and looks, is totally unacceptable, perhaps if your telecaster found himself out work and a dying wife he would also be hard-up and in bad repair. Question, would he have the grit to continue and measure to the creativity of the one he slander.
Thank you
Of course BP will bear the brunt of legal responsibility, but perhaps the American people should look at their insatiable need to drive three quarter ton trucks and SUVs all over the place. IT IS A CONSUMPTION ISSUE not just a supply issue!
BP is no worse than the rest of the oil companies. They all lobbied for less regulation and our congress gave it to them. We need to know who in congress cares more about the oil companies than us. If we know who they are, we can boycott them the next time they are up for election.

MeLon, my grandchildren have a better view of life than you do. Maybe we can learn something from the children of the world and learn to love one another again!
If there's so much oil leaking, why were they cementing the well? Price/supply control?
I find it hard to believe that BP is unique in this situation. They contracted a company to operate an offshore rig. This could've easily happened to any petroleum company drilling in the water and you can bet the response would've been exactly the same. Boycotting one particular company is missing the point. If you really want to show your dissatisfaction to "big oil", you can start by getting out of your car. Manage your commute with public transit or better yet, get on your bicycle.
MeLon, we are not imperialistic we are capitalists! Stop believing all the propaganda from such hateful people like yourself!
Dan... you would think that.
Better join an international forum or chatroom.
Stop blindly beleiving whatever the US Government spoon feeds you.
MeLon, I do not think were the most hated people in the world! As a matter of fact most people in the world minus dictators and radical Muslims, love our way of life and wish to become Americans!

When will Americans demand safe alternate energy sources to replace the dangers of coal. oil & nuclear ? Given the certainty in loss of life and the devastation caused to the ozone, the waters and nature as well as the the inequal compensation to the families of victims, how important is oil, coal or nuclear energy? Doesn't the whole argument center around who's making the money and controlling the Rights?

Dan.... American imperialism is better .. WHY?
Mike... An EKG which is an electrocardiogram is different than what Dr. Gupta was speaking about. He was talking about an echocardiogram.
Golman Sachs settle? No way! There high and high class and high maintenance wives and mistresses need the truth!
JUST SAY "" N O "" TO BRITISH PETROLEUM..!!!!
Let Goldman Sachs settle? Why doesn't Obama's SEC just let them spit in our face! Let Warren Buffett defend them because he said they did nothing wrong!
Possibly BP should be accepting ideas from the public on ways to stop the leak. Granted we are not all engineers, but droping a box over it, or injecting garbage are not exactly high tech ideas.
Not all the Mensa minds of the world work for BP as much as they may like to think so.
Its time to swallow your pride BP and "do something". This is fast becoming a Global disaster.

Yes I want to boycot BP Oil – everyone should not purchase any BP oil products and EVERYONE should cut back on ALL Oil products and gas companies and only use what is necessary.........
Thank you WE ALL NEED TO BAN TOGETHER ON THIS ONE......
Fact 75 % of all insurance claims money paid goes to lawyers. No surprise on how Congress dealt with questioning. If it takes 10 billion to fix the spill the total amount of claim cost will be approximately 175 billion dollars. BP and the public would be better served if they put claims forms in every BP station of facility on the net and call in. Hire all the claims investigation companies on the Gulf Coast to do the investigation. Pay to fix the problem and serve the public instead of not getting the job done promptly and paying for work that does not serve the public good.
The out of control satalite would be more then welcome if it only disrupts infomercials and church stations .
I can't wait for The Hero of the Week an how I wished they'd show last weeks Hero again. That young man that realizeds his eyes were smoked damaged and he undertook the plan to give other homes a light not generated by the burning of wood so others could study and read!
Hi, While BP certainly has to shoulder most of the blame, and I have boycotted oil companies in the past, we are all part of the problem when we drive our gas using cars and turn up our oil heat.
Let us also be real !! BP actually have owned Standard Oil of Ohio and other US oil companies for many years !!! So they are basically a US company and let us not try to put a British face on the oil industry and beat them up to show our despair. Let us take Halibuton and Transocean also to task for pointing fingers at each other. At least BP is openly saying that they are willing to entertain claims. We don't see the contriteness from HAL and RIG.
I enjoy the John and Kiran show and will tape it if I can't watch it. So thanks for that. But I have to say the personal, honest commentary I'm hearing from Drew this morning is both quite entertaining and refreshing. For me, there's nothing like getting a feel for one's personal views as they deliver the facts about the news. So thank you for that as well.
Drew, keep the comments and personal thoughts coming.
Good morning,
I have worked in the oil fields from age 13, I can tell you now, the oil leak is not a leak, it is what is refered to as a GUSHER, and will not be stoped for a LONG, LONG time. No one will ever clean up the oil in this life time. Thanks, Leon hughes.
I have listened to media reports and the hearings with the oil company execs. about the horrible disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. So far, with all the finger pointing about whose fault it is, no one has discussed the possiblity of sabotage.
Is it just a coincidence that this catastrophy happened so soon after Pres. Obama's announcement of relaxing the rules on offshore drilling?
I am a part of the page on Facebook to boycott BP. I do believe that boycotting will show the company that we as Americans will stand behind our fellow Americans in the Gulf Coast. Yes, accidents do happen but they completely ignored the chance of this happening. Firefighters and bomb squads do live drills and this is an instance that has as much impact on people's lives as those tragedies do. They should have already had a plan to stop or reduce this leak. and finger pointing and no remorse from this company makes me know that a boycott would be a wake up call. We all have to support those in the Gulf Coast.
I hope if you choose to boycott BP then you are currently not buying any Exxon products, especially since their spill in Alaska was ten fold worse than BP's. By the way, Has Exxon ever paid a single dime of the judgement against them? I think not.
Absolutely. BP hasn't been honest since the onset of this problem. They've lied about how much was leaking, they've tried to shift the blame, and this was completely avoidable. I don't do business with a company I can't trust.

My comment is about boycotting B.P. I wrote about this to my local paper a few weeks ago. Those who do not live where the spill can directly affect them just don't get it! I drive past B.P. gas stations all the time and see that they are as busy as ever. It's about the only way we can show B.. how we feel about this disaster.
Why didn’t President Obama sign an Executive Order reversing the Bush Administration waiver of a shut off valve that saved BP $500k?
Let go to the real source of the problem. Who wrote the bill and who approved oil drilling in the gulf of mexico?
It is time we all grow up.... our govt let us down not enforcing regulations and safeguards in the big oil business and operations, and now flogging a dead horse (aka BP). They (HAL, RIG, and BP) better pay for everything they have caused, and let the industry be in total peril for being slack and also preventing the growth of alternative energy industries. It all started when REAGAN squashed the alternative energy industry and the Dept of Energy initiatives in the early 80s after the disaster of the energy crisis in the 70s. Some of us had to redefine our careers after being discouraged from an energy career.
This executives should pay damages and they should be criminally charged with neglect and terrorism acts against the nation and the enviroment.
Local merchants are the ones who suffer when we boycott BP. Station owners and local distributors. They are just people like us trying to make a living and not in anyway responsible for this disaster.
I'll continue to buy at BP where the gas comes from allies, not those who may want to bomb the US.
Boycotting BP prior to the findings of the investigation which will hopefully determine which of the three involved companies are at fault for the explosion, pipe closure failure, etc. seems very premature and not well thought out. My heart goes out to the wildlife and oceans that suffer due to man's actions. May the Earth have pity on our carelessness and greed.
The fact that BP has failed to stop the leak and keeps side stepping questions about paying for all the damage of the spill is proof that oil companies do not have the knowledge, skill and ability to drill safely in the ocean.
For the last several years I have gone out of my way to purchase my gas from BP because it wasn't a company headquartered in a country like Saudi Arabia or Venezuela. As a Florida resident, I am appalled by the lack of preparation in this oil spill. The potential effects are so devastating, and there seems to be no end in sight. I will boycott BP, and I am thankful that I own a hybrid. I am also going to start carpooling with neighbors and riding my bike more. We all need to get off our dependency on oil, so I’m doing my best to contribute to that fight. Put wind turbines in the Gulf – they are much safer than oil rigs.
BP deserves to be brought up on charges like the Enron executives. It's these money hungry tycoons that have no regard for anyone, but themselves that ruins America for the rest of us!
BP should be held responsible for every penny of clean up cost. It was their rig, they are the ones lacking a realistic plan to stop the leak as well as not having enough people on the clock to fix this thing. This is much larger a disaster than most know. The oil we see on the surface is only a fraction of the devastation that is done. This may be the end of Gulf of Mexico as we once knew it. The end of the gulf I grew up on.
My brother is a geophysicist – he and his colleagues have had reason to work with BP over the years, and they have often and always said that BP's maintenance was shoddy and they cut costs everywhere, so it was only a matter of time before BP had a major accident. This is it!
There are enough other responsible oil companies that there is no reason to buy from BP and reward their bad behavior. All the oil companies need their feet held to the fire with regard to safety and regulations..
BP and all associated parties need to share in the clean-up and the ecoomic impact on the fishing and tourist industry. Quit asking the guilty parties who is to blame. Congress needs to take action NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MeloN about recruiters on high school campuses. It is worse than that now since Bush's "no child left behind".
In that law the schools track a student until their Senior year at what time all their records are turned over to the Pentagon unless a Parent or Legal Guardian pro-actively writes a letter to the Principal telling them not to give their childs records to anyone except when requested by the student or parent. Where was Elena Kagan when she was going to undo the Bush Adminstrations destruction to our rights?
Dan... do you have any idea as to WHY the Americans are the most hated people in the world?.. Do you even CARE? Does it bother YOU?
Boycotting BP really is not going to change anything. Why blame BP for an ACCIDENT. That is what the spin and hype seems to forget to mention. This was not negligence on the part of BP and BP has taken a role as a leader on trying to resolve this issue. I am not happy it happened, nor there is so much oil just flowing freely, but the reality is, it happened, it is a mess, and it needs to be resolved. A major airline has an accident due to mechanical failure. Hundreds die. Should we boycott the plane manufacturer, or airline. In the analogy, would it be the airlines fault. I think the failure in BPs situation actually is due to a failure that they were not responsible for. fortunatly, they have from the beginning stated they would be responsible for the clean-up including compensation to industries impacted. what more can they do for a bizarre accident that could not have been predicted.
Better not touch BP. If we do, they'll touch us at the pump – in our pocketbook. Never fails.
What are you saying MeLon? If we did not fight in WWII then their would be imperialism and white supremacy all over Europe and Asia!
Dan sorry.. but you have been brain washed by the US Government propaganda machine. There really isn't much hope for you at this point.
You can spew all the BS you want Dan... doesn't change the facts.
I rather not have my Government doing the same things other countries are doing and killing people in my name and the US has a long history of doing just that. Double standards will be the death of America.
Nothing will ever improve in the world till the world rids it's self of people like you.
would not wish to live in Communism, Bamaism,, sorry, I have to ask what the differance is 🙂
dome is not necessary and wasting time – oil floats to surface and can be pumped into tankers/barges –
employ a flotilla of existing tankers/barges starting at epicenter of shaft leak to recover (pump skim off surface oil)
possible "stop leak" would be explosion deep in old shaft using a missile
thank you
Michael Gruters – former faculty physics Princeton late 60'
p.s. the use of dispersing chemicals make surface removal impossible and poisons the sea – really stupid....
it is not proposed to use "hair" skimmers, but hoses that submerge and as water/oil mix is pumped into tanker/barge it is replaced by same.
there are many tankers/barges currently in service to other gulf rigs.
as the tanker hold fills separated water from the bottom is pumped back.
there are single super-tankers that can hold the total spill.
many tankers can be used and return to refineries
MeLon, we were in a cold war with the USSR and we did everything we could to stop the domino effect of communism but I guess you would rather live under communism rather than capitalism. And if you think that the Iranian people are better off now then you aught to live there!
Sorry Danny ... they haven't fought for "my" freedom – since WWll .. maybe. If then.
No .. I don't want my my sons killed in an illegal, illogical, pointless "wars" brought about by corrupt and pocket lining politicians.
Did I hear Dr. Gupta say that an EKG would show a blood clot in the heart?
I don't believe that's true. Of course I'm not a doctor but I have had triple bypass heart surgery and my understanding is that an angiogram is the only definitive test for something like that.
MeLon, are you now putting down our military? They are the ones that fought for your freedom to be so ugly about our government!
MeloN they just don't get it do they!
The more cell phones then the more electricity you must produce which contrinutes to first hand smoke known as pollution which adds to the melting of the ice caos whuch transfer the wait upon the globe and this causes things to happen that we can't predict and only react to. There is an estimate that the the little darling teens will obtain 3 million drivers license this year. What's wrong with adults telling the kids,No! Sorry but no cell or car until you are 18!
I abandoned the automobile right after the USS Cole incident!
Sen. Inhofe, said that Kagan supported and worked on 'Don't ask Don't tell during the Clinton Administration. Ok, we are talking about how many years ago? Back then, being gay was widely discriminated and as a country, today we have grown. So yes, she is entitled to stand differently now. She did what she need to make sure that people like myself at that time, would not be put through torture as there were no laws to protect against the nasty hate crimes that unfolded during that time. He's so out of touch.
Dan... do you even have a grasp of the history between Iran and the US? Do you care that the Iranian people ran the Shah out of Iran in the 50's and the US Military and CIA re-installed him or the 4 million+ people that the Shah killed and tortured (with the backing of the US) to stay in power for the next 20 years all because the Shah was "anti-communist and had OIL? or doesn't small details like that mean anything to you?
To answer your question yes... knowing the history of the US in Iran .. I am sure the US was there stirring that pot up in some form – probably the CIA.
@MeLon, CNN did not print my comment about our foreign policy. Maybe because I added Jesus" second coming but anyway our foreign policy is to advance freedom and democracy for the oppressed people of the world But then again you probably think that we are the oppressors. You should live in a dictatorship for a while maybe then you would appreciate what America does for the people of other countries!
A BP boycott would be akin to shooting yourself in the foot since they are the only company involved that have stepped up and are taking financial responsibility for the mess.
Before we start picking sides on who is to blame, lets wait for the facts about the blowout to come in ,and in the meanwhile let the company fix and pay for the damages, not get in their way by boycotting.
Alex
Agreed Jerry,
I to deal with contracts in my work, not on the scale as an off shore drilling rig, . my limits are 12 million dollar projects 🙂 Nevertheless,
, it may be equipment failure, so that owuld fall upon the manufacting company...
BP didn't own the rig and is 50% of the issue. At least they are working to solve the problem. What we should really boycott is when BP comes to Congress to ask for financial assistance to clean up habitats. Watch those bills!
It is shameful to see how everyone blames so quickly.... BP is doing all any company would and could do. Everyone who claims to be boycotting, well guess what, all oil, all plants, etc etc. etc. oil comes from all oil wells, and is much like the power grid, if you wish to boycott, walk to work, the store.. Boycott your automobiles and give God's green earth a hug.
What gets me is military recruiters showing up @ high schools. Teenaged son comes home and tells me that a recruiter was @ his school – trying recruit high school kids.
Told him don't pay any attention to those fools they just looking for cannon fodder.
Commenting on the proposed boycott of BP, I feel that it would be ineffective, this company has a solid foundation and history to help it move through this turbulence. At the end of the day, the company will not go out of business because a few thousand people want to boycott it, as Exxon Valdez didn't after the 1989 disaster. The only effect that can be had by a boycott is an inconvenience to those that are boycotting, since they will have to go to another company's station.
It's hard for me to believe that these large companies don't have contracts with each other that define what their job is and their liabilities, I've written a lot of contracts and that is one thing that you include in a contract is who is responsible for ever aspect of the job and if that is not in their contracts then shame on them, all three should be held responsible.
Big suprise on the finger pointing! All union members of any union shouldn't be buying BPs gas to begin with, but I agree A lot of the twenty somethings are on the net constantly and will not buy their gas if they don't take care of the environment and people who are being affected by this. They are reacting typical of a large corporation, just like Toyota.
I already am boycotting BP. This disaster is unforgivable–especially now that we all know BP has NO IDEA how to stop the massive leak and contamination. To me, they're done.
Yes, I will boycott BP. We need to run them out of the country! The only way I will support them is if they own up to what happened, pay all of the damages in full, and continue to support the Gulf Coast Region that is affected by this oil spill.
We are ALREADY boycotting BP and have boycotted EXXON since the Alaska disaster. In addition, we have radically changed our consumption of ALL petroleum based products. We can thank Bush, Cheney and their oil buddies for enacting all kinds of loopholes over the past decade which allow the oil companies to get away with murder.
MeLon, i wonder if you also believe that we caused the people of Iran to stand up to their oppressors?
BP is disgusting. Of course I would boycott BP (and already am doing so). But a boycott of BP alone is far from enough. We must hold our politicians (Obama, are you listening?) – all of them – including these industry bought-out, corporatist Dems who keep somehow getting the votes of the environmentally-conscious of us... while just playing the same game as the Rethugs.
How fickle are people? The oil spill was an ACCIDENT and people act like BP committed an act of terrorism.
The root cause of the oil spill – America's growing need for oil/gasoline.
Boycotting BP is not the answer. Insuring that the company pays for FULL cost of the clean-up plus leaving a sizable sum in escrow for additional unforseen needed remedies in the future
The big lie out there is that offshore drilling in the Gulf will cut our dependency on foreign oil. Oil is a GLOBAL commodity!!! There are no guarantees that oil drilled in our waters will end up here.
There's hardly a mention that the 3 co's involved in the spill are not American co's. Even Halliburton moved to Dubai after receiving all the miltary contracts from the Bush/Cheney administration.
I work for an oil company and it is sad to see how all things are aloud to happened, more than likely human error it is sad how we are killing mother earth. Thank u AF
On Cell Phones:
5ish years ago, I had a fancy new phone with fancy new internet servicce–very expensive for the time.
I connected my phone to my palm pilot, via bluetooth, and connected the palm pilot to a stereo system. I connected the phone to the internet, and used it to stream internet radio.
I got a bill reflecting $2000.00 for 5 hours of use. There was no "unlimited" internet back then.
Yes, they should be alerting us about our accounts.
Nobody likes it when someone steps on their toes so why does America seem to get involved with everything?
Dan .. get real ... "radical Muslims" were created and born out of the US foreign policy that has practiced double standards for decades. Your religious mumble jumble doesn't make you any better than "radical Muslims".
Boycott bp doesnt help, they need the money to pay the hugh bills, which will come in soon
@ Muslim, if the radical Muslims were true to their religion and peace loving, God fearing people and did not start this war on terror in the early 90's there would be no reason to torture anyone, but as I see it torture should be the farthest thing from these extremists mind because God has far worse in store for them!
Say MeloN, I got the word just before sundown yesterday that the book I have contributed to and corroborated on is due to be on Amazon this November!
It has the potential to change this world only for the greater good! You will love every page MeloN!
Comon sense tells us that accidents will happen no matter how much pre planning we do.
To boycott BP is as foolish as it is to stick a screwdriver into an electrical socket.
Is there anything CNN wishes to stir up?
Surely there is a race card that needs to be played in this?
Also with all the real and important news in the world, Jobs, Healthcare etc etc. why was CNN and 360 wasting time talking about a misspelled word on Holywood Blvd?
Time management at its worst...... Just a thought and an opinion expressed by me 🙂
The US Government should give priority to the unemployed Americans who's job took a vacation to Mexico .. and decided to stay there.
BP seem to be doing all they can to stop the leak. They are facing a really difficult problem. One can hardly blame them NOW rather give them all the support we can to give them the positive energy to solve this leak a mile below the sea surface. Just imagine!!
Rather blame the previous administration for allowing drilling in the Gulf. Obviously sooner or later something like this was bound to happen but then oil is too lucrative to pass by.....drilling in the Gulf should be prohibited if people and sensitive plants and animals are to be protected. I believe they should be.
In Germany, only the caller pays for each minute. The person who answers dont. Thats much better then here in US. You pay as soon as you let it ring somewhere. Time to change.
I have and will continue to boycott BP gas stations. I was a faithful customer for years but as a native of Louisiana, I do not like the matter of fact attitude the company has taken in the face of such a disaster, I don't see the remorse on the face of any BP rep. Let the Oil Lobbyists take my place at their gas pump.
I think CNN should do a story on "Where Have all the CNN Anchors Gone". It seems that everybody is doing double duty and to catch a segment with the original anchor(s) is rare indeed.
There are always cases where the phone companies are wrong, but way too many parents don't control what their teens do. With rare exceptions, cell phones are not needed at school - or the dinner table. Just take the suckers away from them! These moans remind me of the same ones I heard 30 years ago about TV - you're the parent, be the parent!
Imagine that .. cell phone plan holders getting scammed by big business.
Is Credit Card Joe (Biden) doing to cell phones what he did to credit cards?
Just a thought... On ac360, last evening, Anderson spoke with Julia Louis from Seinfeld about her name being spelled wrong on her Hollywood star. At the end of her interview Anderson asked Julia what she planned to do with the cut out piece of the mistake. She said out it above her fireplace and laughed. Well you guys should call her back and ask her to auction it off and donate the cash to a charity of her choice. I bet she can raise a lot of money and turn the somewhat silly moment into a very big positive. Just a thought! P.s. Kiran is hot! Thanks.
Congratulations to Melissa on another day of sobriety! It is day 47 you are on now isn't it?
I thought of you often yesterday as I will today!
Remember no matter how bad things get drinking or drugging won't make it better!
Hang in their Melissa!
Is Faisal Shahzad being tortured?
Is the "Willing co-operation" he is offering coming about because of torture or threats of torture?
Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, the ALLEGED "mastermind" behind 9/11 had family members, young ones, locked inside a box with insects. They were told those insects would kill them. They played those tapes to Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, as part of torture.
How many "terrorists" in Iraq and Afghanistan have "confessed" to terrorism because of threats made about torturing family members of the accused?
This whole stinking "war on terror" is based on lies and 'intelligence' obtained through torture.
The modus opperandi is "Torture them until they say what you want them to say, then we treat it as actionable intelligence."
Good Morning CNN!
Imagine that... finger pointing run amok!
Who'd thunk it?
