BP releases video of spewing oil & gas
(CNN) – We are getting our first look today at the source of the oil leak now menacing the Gulf coast. BP is finally releasing a 30-second clip that puts a face on the enemy. More than 4.5 million gallons of crude have spilled so far. The president is now calling on Congress for $58 million in new emergency funding to fight this looming catastrophe.
In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requesting congressional approval of the package, Obama said oil giant BP – which owns the leaking well at the source of the Gulf of Mexico spill – was responsible for all clean-up costs. In addition, Obama said, the government would seek full compensation for all damages from BP.
"We cannot allow the potentially protracted pursuit of claims to prevent us from swift action to help those harmed by this spill," Obama said in the letter.
Jeff Liebman, the acting deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, said the package called for an additional $118 million in spending. Read more
Arizona bans ethnic studies in public schools
Fresh on the heels of a new immigration law that has led to calls to boycott her state, Arizona's governor has signed a bill banning ethnic studies classes that "promote resentment" of other racial groups.
Gov. Jan Brewer approved the measure without public statement Tuesday, according to state legislative records. The new law forbids elementary or secondary schools to teach classes that are "designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group" and advocate "the overthrow of the United States government" or "resentment toward a race or class of people."
The bill was pushed by state school Superintendent Tom Horne, who has spent two years trying to get Tucson schools to drop a Mexican-American studies program he said teaches Latino students they are an oppressed minority. There was no immediate response from the Tucson Unified School District, the law's main target. Read more

Arizona bans ethnic studies in public schools
I believe this is a good bill ecept for the part about that no school shall teach anything about overthrowing the goverment are constitution infact says this is a goverment by the people for the people and if it shall stop working for the peeople by trhe people we are to bar arms against that govement and as anyone will tell you this is a goverment by the corperations for the corporations and we had big hopes for Obama but the corupt is to strong for one President to take on and if we dared to try and return are goverment to the way it was made to be we would be killed by the rich that run this nation and how do you think enough coke and heroine get into this nation to fill every city nevery town in every state without the goverment bringing in ship loads everyday all day!!! THINK its not a crime though im sure the cia or fbi will check me out for what i jus said
I have been kicking my brain around about how this spill could be
contain. I had what I thought could be a flash of genius. Here in my
home, while using my wet and dry shop vac to stop a large amount of water running every where on the kitchen floor. I sprung to action and turned on the wet vacuum, with in minutes the water was gone, off the floor, and in the bucket. That's when it came to me, why hasn't someone tried to vacuum up the oil spill into a oil tanker and filter the water and oil later. For that matter send a pipe down to the damaged pipe way down low and start vacuuming ( sucking ) up the flowing oil, also into a oil tanker. There must be an industrial vacuum, big enough for the job, kicking around somewhere. Just wondering if anyone has thought of that?
A device 4 plugging the well is based on scissors jack & a rubber grommet all in 1.This has to be collapsable 2 allow it 2 be put inside the pipe.The pipe is large so the more pads,feet which can be incorp. into the plug design the better.The pads need heavy coarse,sharp,teeth 2 ensure penetrating thru the grime etc. & they must be angled so the more pressure the harder they bite into the sides.Attached to the plug well side is a large circular rubber disc,plate a few inches larger than the inside dia. of the pipe.Attached 2 this well side r large flat curved fingers which will ensure the disc opens properly.The open dia. of fingers must be a little smaller than pipe.Everything will be activated when a large acme thread screw going thru all is engaged.The plug must be shoved in as far as possible 2 allow enough time 2 expand the plug.The screw must be turned as quickly as possible so the plug grabs hold before being pushed out.It must be built of hvy stainlees steel. Stop talking about job losses people,we r talking about the destruction of Life.Without Life there is nothing.I hope this might be of help.

What's next for AZ? Are they going to ban Cinco de Mayo celebrations? How about banning tacos & other Mexican dishes from their restaurants?
The GOP took a big gamble by choosing Tampa over Phoenix for their 2012 national convention. The controversy over AZ's new law played at least a part in it. Several GOP leaders have spoken out aginst the law, including Karl Rove & Marco Rubio. Phoenix was hoping to make up for some of their losses due to the boycott .
After the 2008 slogan of drill, baby, drill, that some are now saying they don't remember, it could be devastating to the GOP if BP doesn't stop the leak & FL is suffering the consequences of it. Tampa could be a ghost town by 2012 w/ the loss of fishing, tourism & other industries if the leak isn't stopped soon.
The Republicans are largely to blame for this massive oil spill. Their leadership and the party as a whole has steadfastly promoted and insisted on large-scale and extensive oil exploration and drilling in the past and continues today. The GOP's unison chant at the Republican National Convention of "Drill Baby Drill" says it all. Currently we're not hearing a peep about "Drill Baby Drill" from Sarah Palin on any of her social media sites. And the right-wing dominated radio talk show hosts are attempting to "spin" this massive oil spill in every which way, making some of the most outrageously misleading assertions ever heard.
What I would like to ask Sarah Palin and the other conservative political leaders and talk show hosts is "how is that drill baby drill "thingy" working out for you now? Well it's not working out for the people on the Gulf coast who stand to lose a tremendous amount in terms of the economic hits to the fishing, shellfish and tourist industries, the health of their ecosystems and the health of the people who live in the Gulf coastal region. And since the people of the Gulf Coast are our brothers and sisters, when they suffer, all Americans suffer, and thus the American people are the hardest ones hit by this crisis.
It is time for the American people to move ahead with a national energy policy based on clean, renewable energy sources including solar, wind, geothermal, ocean/tidal, conservation and electric and fuel cell vehicles!
Is the Tucson schools teaching about Irish-Americans? Chinese-Americans? Polish-Americans? Russian-Americans? German-American? Japanese-Americans?
I think it is anti-American for anyone to refer to themselves as ANYTHING-American. Putting AMERICAN second to anything shows disrespect and hatred of America. That term should be outlawed. The proper term should be American of "insert nationality here" decent. Period.
how heavy is the bottom plate on those dump trucks for gold and underground copper mining like they manufacture up tn Le Tourneaus place in Longwiew Texas? (I think they still contruct them there) could one of those be used to lower over the top of a topless unit ?...itcould have a central hole cut ad a release flow pipe added on before lowering...why does it have to be a one piece constuction? I know these things have answered and without details we are just bottom fishing...
With all the heroic efforts on the part of local fisherman in the Gulf, I can only wonder, who is an environmentalist now ?
look if we can just construct a small topless building 6 x 10 with the rear wall with a mouse hole cut in it to set over the pipe and begin an upawrd 6 foot flow upward then we have a base where we can weld on shore a thought thru capture construction to ultimatly reduce the escape to a controllable release to finally be take over direction and removable...is it possible that robotics can drive metal into the ocean floor for secuung the housing or can they maipulate hooks that would be used to hook loops for coupling each phase of a base housing to a second phase construction 10 or 8 feet up from the leak and from the original wall housing..
The Americanization of Iraq and Afghanistan will never succeed but rest assured the US Government will continue to spend young American lives in futile attempt to prove it will. The puppet government installed by the US in those countries are just sucking up the money and arms the US is donating and one day will turn those weapons on Americans.

ok ok yeah it is taking long for BP to fix this leak. But i work for BP and it is a great company will do all they can to seal this leak. I will continue to support any and everything BP does. So to all you tree huggers give BP a litttle more time.
oil spill clean up recommendations ...what size is the pipe where is the that the escape is coming from?...
Karen,wouldn't all the groups of immigrants over the years including the slaves ( which was wrong ) wouldn't all of that fall into the world history class?
Considering the issues in Arizona, Suspending the classes in question may have been a better choice, suspending them until an overview and reform of the classes is complete. Certainly right now there is alot of evidence pointing too. the teaching of opression in these classes.

If the top hat does'nt stop the oil leak, I have another idea. Advance a six inch in diameter steel pipe near the oil leak, then insert a flexible
steel tube two inches in diameter thru the six inch pipe down to the
leak. Cap off the end of the flex pipe before lowering it to the spill, take liquid expansion foam, the same type used to plug up leaks at your
home and fill the steel expansion tube with this liquid. Guide the six inche pipe close enough to the leak, insert the flex pipe deep into the pipe leaking oil, pressurize the flex pipe blowing off the retaining cap
and pump the expansion foam into the leak at a great volume, this may just do the trick. Good Luck!!!!

I don't understand the way people are thinking regarding educating their students. Any group(s) that have made this country what it is today should be taught. This seperate classes for certain ethnicities is absurb. Does that mean that white kids can skip the classes about slavery? I think Arizona's govenor needs some sensitivity training.

yikes...I meant it appears to be a horizontal flow from the leak...
..at 2000 pounds per square inch release it looks like the leak is a vertical release from the films...if we could take a heavy replective plate say 4ft wide and 10 feet high to place about 3 feet from the flow and have welders attach like pipes that would receive the upward reflect and also weld pipes to the sides to sideflow and have huge then t construction have most of the pipes welded with a cover plate and just a few that released to refleted flow then we would have like 6 to 8 outlets and from that flow is can be devised to gather those out lets on down to 2 to one...see I am not understanding ifunderwater welding anbe opererated by robotic control...we are just not in the loop of what is happening...I wish the oil companies and service partners could really give us a drawing explanation of the detai...those pipes would have to be welded together and all seams solid..I just don't have a picture of what is involved a mile down in the ocean..
Ethnic studies classes,, make them an elective in College,, Schools are to teach the kids basic skills and to prepare them for college and the work place..

It's hard to imagine that "only" 210,000 gallons a day are leaking after seeing the video of the gusher. Look at how fast you can pump gallons of gas into your vehicle w/ the small nozzles at gas stations. How many of those nozzles would fit into that wellhead? I believe the estimates are way too low & many experts agree w/ me.

The sea was awsome. We would pick up sand dollars, fish, swim and play in the ocean near the hundreds of dolphins.
Now that is over.....Sara Palin eat your words...drill baby drill. Look at what happens when you advocate something you REALLY don't know about. I grew up around the men that would come eat at our restaurant. She needs to understand how delicate ecosystems are.

The core of the earth is lava, a molten substance... okay so it is really hot. Okay we use water in engines and oil too, not just to lube the engine but to cool it as well...
With that in mind, if you lose oil pressure and suck, bearings don't get the lube needed and get HOT and fail...
Here is my point or though.. Suppose God, or mother nature if you prefer, not here to argue your belief system, suppose the oil we are taking form the earth is a natural or God designed feature for keeping the earth stable? Is it that far out on a limb or is it that simple that it has been over looked?

Ethnic studies classes aren't limited to those of that ethnicity. It allows all students to learn about other cultures This is not a bad thing.
The oil spill is a real fishy deal but let's ration gasoline as long as we are at war except in the summer. This I am sure will get raves reviews.
By adding an additional tax on oil, the White House would force all oil companies, and all consumers, to pay for this spill (sorry, blowout), and not just BP. This seems in conflict with the repeated WH statement that BP is responsible for the full cost of this blowout.
Those guys that "deal in the black paper" Presidenial and governments new waves of spending then they use e-mails to pump up the stock inthe companies were really privvy to the Bush "warring and security black papers"! Weapontry and airport scanning just a few examples. These guys were predicting gold would see $2000 and that is still the major castrophe goal from these guys.
There is nothing from preventing any group from holding classes for ethnic studies for their own group. In my youth my neighbors of Lithuanian descent went to Saturday school to study their language and culture, as did Polish and Slovenian children. But all these classes were paid for by private groups, not tax payer money.
There is no place in public grammar school nor public high school for these specialized ethnic study classes. But there should be generalized classes which present information about many cultures, much like a world history class would present facts about world events.
If you want to study about your country, study about the US, unless that ISN'T your country. If the US is not your country then be polite as a guest while you are here then learn about YOUR country in classes for which you pay or learn about it when you go back to your country.
Ps and almost a month later mainstream news STILL plugs some first lady (halliburton appointed) book before spending hardly any time on GULF oil story. Check out Halliburtons plans to drill even deeper in Asia pacific..."...so we will be stronger in the future" said BP talking head! No! Please make them stop destroying/raping the planet.

Why didn't someone come up with the idea of putting a smaller pipe into the broken one first. They would of been able to collect so much oil and maybe it would of minimized the damage. It just seems like the CEO and his flunkies below him could of come up with that when it first happened. Instead now they're telling us that they may have to plug the whole with garbage. Yeah, that's going to make me want to buy their gas.

President Obama is seeking another $118 million in funding for cleanup in the Gulf. How many Republicans will say "we don't have the money"? After saying they wanted the federal govt out of their lves since the election, they are now begging the same govt to come into their lives!!! I don't expect to see any fillibuster for this funding or any of the requests for funding those red states hit by severe weather!!!

If one listens closely and also recalls the founding fathers intentions and meanings when writing the Constitution along with the Bill of Rights ( Both of which the aclu has trampled all over ) The equality and treatment there is meant for United States Citizens, not illegal immigrants, not terrorist, simply put American Citizens. Christine Romans knows that short selling should be criminalized completely! Also that these big banks should be broken apart with the choice of being a lending institution or being an investment banker.
If you buy a stock from a brokerage house then your shares are kept in the "vault" and are eligible for short selling. If you tell the brokerage house to put your name on those shares then they ecome ineligible for short selling. Congress can pass the law that the shares bought must automatically have the buyers name on them. It would help the IRS!
A republican strategist said yesterday that 10% of American's pay 70% of the income taxes. My question is what per cent of those 10%'s children died as a frontline soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan? Let's allow that 70% to be raised to 85%.
I tell conservatives to watch their tongues. If they won't to get conservative then let's sell the cars and cut every utility off to our houses except running water and sewer.
I went twice in my life for 10 days with nothing but the intake of water. I don't have much stomach for conservative crud! We want the illegal funds removed by conservatives returned. One way that comes to mind is those offshore bank thefts.

@oil spill recommendations: oil skimmers have been in the Gulf since the early days of the spill. They have also burnt some of the oil on the surface. Though I agree w/ you on the dispersants, an explosion would exacerbate the problem. It's much easier to cap an oil wellhead than a crater!!!!
CNN..So many need a freaking job here but while collapse still a work in progress not going to happen. When Obama said "control" during his Karzai press interview he was saying American nation building was wrong.
And MeloN the Bush-Clinton Foundation and another foundation with Clinton's name on it are the only two of the 6 charities receiving parts of the $10.4 billion in Haiti relief funds that won't answer where their money is going or planned to go.

How is Melissa and another day clean?
Several people stated the spill was an accident yesterday & that BP was doing everything possible to stop the leak. The problem w/ that is BP did everything in it;s power to stop regulations that may have prevented the spill. They said an acoustics switch that is required in some countries is unnecessary & too expensive. Not as expensive as the fight against against regulations & this spill.
Since most oil rigs are mobile, they are shipped from country to country, they have to be flagged. The Deep Horizon's rig was flagged in the Marshall Islands!!! Why? To bypass more stringent regulations in other countries. The rig wasn't built there, only inspected & flagged there.
BP states they will pay any "legitimate claims," though they won't be more specific. When asked about reimbursing the states & federal govt for lost tax revenues, they said that was a question mark. The Coast Guard & National Guards are deployed in the Gulf. Are they going to pay? I doubt it. US taxpayers will be paying for the spill in many ways.
Seafood prices will escalate, gas prices will increase. In fact, they are up 7 cents over the last 2 weeks. The states have received some money from BP but they are also asking for & receiving money from DC. Many say that the losses in the fishing, tourism & other industries may cause a double dip in the recession. Yeah, we're going to pay dearly. Eleven families have already paid the ultimate price.
Appears there's a fair amount of natural gas from this well. What did BP do with the natural gas when the drill was operational? I hope it was not ignored and captured for valuable use!
Is BP responsible for the oil spill in the Gulf? DUH wasn't it their oil rig and didn't they place it there?? Their equipment that failed they profitted from that rig. Even if they're found not guily of responsibility for the spill they should be held accountable for the spill. Responsibility and Accountability are 2 different things.
Everyday this oil keeps spilling into the gulf , it saddens me . Mother nature needs a " Big Hug " right now. Let's all pray right now that this leak is stopped soon.
The nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court is about the mid-term elections. The President and the DNC are fundraising, while Michael Steele and the RNC go through controversy after controversy; the Democrats are going to hold on to both the House and the Senate in November.
This is still America and there should be american studies. If the corriculum favors one rave over the others then it should be regulated there must be a balance to study all the races and Nationalities.
Concerning all that is happening lately; there is so much talk of educating the children of America equally about the history and cultures of black, hispanic, and asian peoples in addition to white European history and culture. Now that's a great idea, but at the same time that everyone gets loud and pious and/or rebellious, they all ignore a people who lost two continents, all the islands of the Caribbean, along with most of their people and cultures; the indigenous native Americans. Why is that?? The Native Americans have been so beaten down, and are so used to what has happened and is still happening to them, that we very rarely ever hear from them, and precious few, if any others, think of and take the time to speak on their behalf.
What kind of uprising would there be, if a professional (or even college level) sports team were to name themselves the Blackskins, or Yellowskins, or Whiteskins, or Brownskins, and having as their logo, an example of a warrior representative of that group(s)?? Yet there are the Washington Redskins, who've stated that they will not do the respectful thing and change their name, as St. John's University did.
What I would like to hear from all of these very vocal people, is that they do try to honor the great peoples of the Americas, by including them as a part of their examples and arguments.
dome is not necessary and wasting time – oil floats to surface and can be pumped into tankers/barges –
employ a flotilla of existing tankers/barges starting at epicenter of shaft leak to recover (pump skim off surface oil)
possible "stop leak" would be explosion deep in old shaft
OR
insert a pipe/hose containing a shut off valve into the existing hole that would have a flange that expands inside and does not have back pressure to oil escaping – then shut off valve ...

p.s. the use of dispersing chemicals make surface removal impossible and poisons the sea – really stupid....
it is not proposed to use "hair" skimmers, but hoses that submerge and as water/oil mix is pumped into tanker/barge it is replaced by same.
there are many tankers/barges currently in service to other gulf rigs.
as the tanker hold fills separated water from the bottom is pumped back.
there are single super-tankers that can hold the total spill.

5000 barrels a day and each barrel 45 gallon drums=225,000 gallons per day and a million gallons every four days.
Government, Industry, Finance, Academic,Military,Media, Religion(spirituality+ethics) and the People done wrong by the first seven. To the three finger pointing oil executives understand Industry as a whole and that which each are a part of is at fault. Each oil executive is deserving of blame here.
No they're gonna need all the oil sales they can get to pay for this mess. Boycott them and the United States Taxpayers will end up footing the bill. I'm tired of having to bail out big companies let them use their Bonus Money to pay for the mopup.
