(CNN) – BP is releasing new pictures of the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. What used to be the Deep Water Horizon is now deep trouble for the environment.
Plumes of oil and gas are pouring from the damaged well. BP claims their latest fix captures about two fifths of the oil. That's prompted authorities to expand the federal fishing ban. It now covers more than 47,000 square miles.
We're seeing images of the threat this oil spill poses to wildlife. In this American Morning original report, our Rob Marciano sees first-hand the efforts to clean and release these animals.

Is anyone concerned about the impact that the oil spill could have on this year's hurricane season? Will the oil carpet have any effect on the water temperature, a major contributor to tropical storm formation?
I watch CNN every morning. I have some comments about the coverage the Gulf Oil Rig Explosion. I realize there is going to be a huge environmental impact for many years to come. But I have seen almost no coverage from you on the 11 people who died in this tragedy. For instance, did you know there will be a Memorial Service for Jason Anderson (my cousin), and driller on the rig that day, on May 22nd in Bay CIty, Texas?
When a tornado strikes, an airliner crashes or a mine blows up. I see a lot of interviews with the families. Somehow, the victims and families of the Gulf incident have been all but forgotten and let down by the media, and overshadow by the environmental aspect.
The responsibility for this disaster lies as much with our politicians and political parties that have been taking oil money for years as with BP. Lets insist they give up all that money, from the last 10 years, and create a fund to help those who are being put out of work. GIVE IT BACK needs to be a mantra across the nation, and insist they take no more. In the meantime, how about a day of no driving in protest to all this greed that is ruining our world. We need to hit the oil companies with the only thing they understand or care about.
Well I guess all those "Drill baby drill" addicts are happy. Some already back peddling & trying to justify continuing off shore drilling.
Even if this leak were stopped today we are going to see its effects for years! The simple fact is this has happened for the usual reasons. MONEY!! Unless EVERYONE envolved is made responsible & made
to PAY, however long it takes, this will just be another major blunder that will fade away while WE wind up footing the bill.
