Hurricanes and oil slicks 'scary as hell'

(CNN) – Still healing from Hurricane Katrina and now reeling from this environmental disaster, residents along the Gulf Coast have another burden to brace for hurricane season. Our Rob Marciano has the report.

With the onset of hurricane season it's time we took a look at just what a true worst-case scenario would look like. "Preparedness" by the cowboys in the oil & gas industry has been shown to be a cruel joke; now let's see what possible dire results their fast-and-loose attitude might have created. A complete kill-off of the Mississippi delta? Years of toxic cleanup on Florida's beaches? The end of the Gulf fishing industry? It seems evident that BP as a company is doomed; what then?

JG, you are an idiot! Bringing in Obama's birth certificate, etc has nothing to do with this story.

JG – and yet, with George W. (a born again christian) in office, the oil companies were allowed to remove all of the protections that would have prevented this in the first place. The oil may be spilling now, but the disaster was set with George W. and Cheney – they ensured that it was just a matter of time. With all due respect, God helps those who help themselves & "drill baby drill" politics and policies that minimize the protection of the one environment we all share are examples of us failing to help our longterm survival on this planet. Until the environment becomes as important in policy setting (and vote getting) as the economy and healthcare, we continue to set our eventual demise more in stone.

JG, check your facts. President Obama used the same bible that President Lincoln used, and President Obama used it at both ceremonies. Conversely, what difference does it really make where President Obama was born. Get over it or relocate to another country.

    Happy Birthday CNN

Any chance that a hurricane will suck up the oil from the gulf and disperse it in the air to either explode when struck by lightning or rain down small particles of hydrocarbons on the population centers along the coast?

The worst ever environmental disaster in the history of the world happened on Obamas' watch and he'll be forever linked with that. It's been documented that he took BP Pac money (as did congress) for political favors. His birth as a U.S. Citizen is in doubt as I have not seen his actual birth certificate, only a document saying he was born in Hawaii, which in my opinion can be easily fabricated, especially for a political machine that has an agenda. During his inagural, Obama didn't swear on the bible, nor did he at the second swearing in ceremony in the oval office. Without God, the U.S. cannot make it, and what we're seeing in the Gulf is just the beginning. Get ready for more disasters, economic and otherwise. If you're looking for help, you best look to yourself because Obama, silver tongued devil that he is, certainly can't talk himself out of trouble with the economy taking a nosedive. Does the U.S. deserve this? I know this, what goes around, comes around, good bad or indifferent. The Storm is coming and many people will find out if their house (financial&otherwise) is built on sand or rock. In my opinion, while God has removed his protection from the U.S.He still listens to prayer. So get on your knees and pray to God for deliverance, more than ever before, because the only way out of the coming storm is to go through it. And pardon the pun, without God, it's going to be one helluva ride.

BLACK RAIN: While an excellent movie, has now become reality. I cannot imagine the carnage and total destruction if this happens. WE need a miracle here and alot of prayers.

Not only are we facing the contamination of 4 states, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, from surge of oil filled water, but the work that is being done to drill relief wells will have to stop every time there is a hurricane threatening.

Remember what Woody Guthrie said "from the redwood forests to the oil slick waters, this land was destroyed by B & P"

Complete and total incompetence. This phrase best describes the oil industry, the US government, and all who are "involved" with this oil spill catastrophe. Plugging the leak has been the first priority and apparently is far from having a complete resolution. Why wasn't surface oil containment the first priority? Isn't there such things as oil booms that will contain oil in 15-20 foot rolling waves? These oil plumes, are they bottom-up? Or, are they top-down as a result of dispersants? At some point in time (soon after the explosion) the oil spill was in relatively small area, immediately surrounding the oil rig. Why wasn't the oil confined then? For that matter, what does containing the oil have to do with stopping the leak? Those who are attempting to stop the leak, have nothing to do with containing the oil at the surface. Billy Nungesser seems to be one of the few politicians who has a grasp on what is about to happen, should a hurricane come around. For 40+ days the Gulf has been relatively quite. Contain that oil coming up from the bottom at ground zero! If those involved don't know how to contain it, then I give you a hint. Its called UV protected LDPE 6-10 mill greenhouse film. It is readily available in 52 ft by 150 ft long sheets and it comes on rolls. A thermal fused joint can make what looks like a huge air filled sausage with a long weighted apron that descends into the water column. The sausage will 100% ride the rolling waves. The sausages are mechanical interconnected with each other. Cost? About $4,000,000 dollars to make a 40 mile perimeter. This containment system must be used in water depths greater than 50 feet. As long as there is no breaking waves, it will contain the oil.
