(CNNMoney.com) – Adm. Thad Allen, the retired Coast Guard commandant overseeing the response to BP's oil spill, sent a letter to Chief Executive Tony Hayward demanding more information on compensation provided to people affected by the disaster.
Allen plans to meet with BP's senior claims team on Wednesday to discuss the issue.
"We need additional information to assess how well the process is meeting the critical needs of individuals, families and businesses whose livelihoods are being impacted by the spill," wrote Allen, the National Incident Commander in charge of the clean-up.

Thanks, kw, for stating the obvious. Do these people not remember all the fraud that happened after Hurricane Katrina?
The 'just send BP the bill' is not the way to do biz. No business can operate that way. Without detailed accounting or maybe cost analysis with verification, nothing can or should be paid.
Just send BP the bill is a statement made by people who have never owned a business.
There will be many frivolous and abusive claims. Even here in Illinois, I just paid $1.00 more for a shrimp dinner than prior to the spill. I will file a claim because this is America..... and I am entitled.
This mentality is what must be stopped. However, I am clearly on solid grouind as I've suffered economic damages of $1.00 so far.
I have heard that there would be an environmental tax on everyone to pay for this................... why?
Everyone concerned should buck up and do the best they can. There is no easy solution and you will never please everyone.

Your reporting just now that BP has enough funds to cover the environmental cleanup is nothing short of irresponsible. Did you even bother to do any research on what the environmental containment and cleanup costs will be??? The answer is: on the same order, in other words $ billions of dollars, as the "deep pockets" of which you reported that BP has. Shame on you – you need to do your homework and improve your reporting.
