Exclusive: John Roberts tours BP's 'kill well' rig
(CNN) – We have seen the pictures from the ocean floor of the underwater volcano of oil erupting for 52 days now. But you may not know what's going on at the surface to stop this leak. It is incredible, unprecedented, very risky – and it has to work.
Our John Roberts saw the effort with his own eyes yesterday when he went out to ground zero, 40 miles off shore, with the man in charge of this effort, BP Chief Operating Officer for Exploration and Production Doug Suttles.
An army of oil workers, many who live along the coast they're working to save, are trying to hit something smaller than a basketball hoop five miles down and on the first shot. It's the closest BP has allowed anyone to get to their operations to kill the well. It's something you'll only see on American Morning.

The piece that John Roberts is doing on BP worthless seems like CNN is trying to drum up sympathy for BP. Who cares about how the COO and CEO is dealing with being hated. what about the 11 human beings that died and the families that were left behing, the fishermen that can't fish the beaches that are closed. To me this segment would be like dong a piece on how the war is stressing out the Taliban–who cares.

STAY FOCUSED: To many comments that have nothing to do with oil spill! If the states and people this disaster is affecting have not filed their claims they had better hurry. Stocks of BP fell 50%, they want to give money to stock holders, oil continues to flow both into the gulf & into BP's ships! BP's attornies working around the clock to start figuring out how to keep from paying. The politics, finger pointing, etc., is a waste of time at this point. Once the leak is stopped, clean-up ongoing, then we can figure out who to go after. Lets not forget that even though BP is the main vilian in this disaster there are other companies involved. Also those people, "politicians", who had $$$ put in their pockets are responsible.
Earlier on when they tried to cap the well with housings, they experienced problems with ice crystals forming. Why not do what nature was trying to do by itself, which was to freeze the gusher. Could the engineers not try to inject some sort of liquid nitrogen, dry ice, or some other compound, and thencap the well with concrete?
I'm not an engineer but perhaps its an avenue that hasn't been explored.

Just saw the piece with John Roberts speaking to a BP official (didn't catch his name) about why it took so long to get the hi-def video out. John just let the BP guy get away with that lame excuse of having to fly the video to the mainland without even challenging him. C'mon! Really! That's why BP will talk to John Roberts and not Anderson Cooper, who would not have let that lame excuse go by the wayside.
For all those who want heads to roll, if you have done nothing but complain about this spill you have no room to talk. At least their trying all they can to stop it and i do not hear any of you doing anything but complaining!
The Democrats are all about spending as much as they can on worthless, wasteful projects.
We can through an 18th century ran government at this crisis or rather we are...we see our over sight and regulation is miserable but doesn't Governor Bobby Jundal want less government and less regulation? He is on record as such...
Suggestion for oil spill cleanup:
1. stop adding dispersant
2. collect oil in weather balloon type bladders as it comes out of the well. Let them float to the surface, get "herded" to a point where they can be pumped out to a facility for processing (maybe by Kevin Kosner's centrifuge idea or other).
When those bird rescue places start putting in incennerators and it starts smelling like popeye's chicken then you can assure yourself of those birds fate .
The GOP isn't fighting "financial reform". More lies and twisting of FACTS Pauly. It's the Democrats that no nothing of financial responsibility.
From what was shown on 60 Minutes a couple of weeks or so back "the person responsible for accidentally hitting the annular while it was under test made the human error that cracked the annular BUT the head driller that ruled against stopping drilling after pieces of the annular surfaced in return drilling liquids flat blew the call"...but the first person that made a mistake probably incinerated in the explosion...there was doubt days before the removal process began but the Offshore Horizion had been behind and was way over budget and needed to move so the profit or bottomline wouldn't suffer as bad.
Biden is the one that made it possible for credit card companies to be able to monitor themselves and set their own rules concerning the amount of interest they could charge a customer. ALL BIDEN. Why do you think all credit card companies are headquartered in Deleware?
All B.P. has done is got rid of one smooth talker for a better one .
B.P. has three days to come up with another plan that wont work they need to reinforce there efforts with more scientist from Nasa and other oil company's there treating this event as a time to use money sparingly .
And isn't it ironic that the GOP is now fighting financial reform? Especially the consumer protection provision? Talk about towing a party line!!!!
Palin didnt finish her term not a good example .
Should be more women in National politics. Get rid of the Ol' Boy network. Country can't take much more of them.
Word is Goldman Sachs sold 4 million shares of BP short early in the crisis and man that is huge profit! The shorts are getting rich on the oil spill on BP stock!...
When some one becomes that secret then there doing something that other's wont like those birds are more then likely being killed .
There not letting the media in to see the birds because it's cheaper to kill them then to clean them .
It's funny that you want to place the blame on Biden. I don't agree w/ his vote on the bill. However, it takes more than 1 Senator to pass a bill. Besides, don't you think Americans that took out more credit than they could afford share some of the responsibility? Americans who didn't run up a lot of debt or didn't use credit cards weren't affected by the bill!!!!
Thats a bad video loop of the Oil Spill. Why not just show it live? It freezes every 8-10 seconds and replays.. do you really think we're that stupid?
What was that Soilder doing in studio around 5am CT.

Who has inflicted one damage to the American public... Hayward with his role in the oil spill or Credit Card Joe Biden with his role with credit cards?... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
Have to remember CNN does what they do for the exact same reason BP does what it does... the bottom line. CNN isn't about doing public service. CNN employees wouldn't "work" for free.
I watched this am Keven Costner's centrifuge and Jindals vacuum cleaner but the question must be asked. Are these gadgets scalable?
Has any scientist done the math on these ideas? If they are scalable then we should mobilize the engineering might of this country behind these ideas and then send BP the bill.
CNNdidn't state that Alaskans have been receiving compensation every year for 20 years. You did!!! You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own set of facts!!!! You really should research issues before commenting on them!!!!
I'm not responsible for checking the validity of anything CNN reports. That's on them. Contradicting reports on CNN?.. Go figure that out.
Hayward saying he wants his life back after 11 of his employees died is more than a gaffe!!!
This oil spill crisis is so Big that we should give a tax cut to the top 10% of the nations wealthist indiviuals.
One good thing about the oil spill.... Increased business and free advertising for DAWN dish soap!

Melon, Allaskans have been receiving compensations for 20 years? From CNN in 2008:
In Wednesday's debate over whether to reduce the punitive damages against Exxon, Justice David Souter suggested an amount twice what the firm initially paid to compensate those suffering economic loss, which was about half a million dollars.
Walter Dellinger, representing Exxon, said the company has suffered enough and spent billions to restore the water quality and beaches. "This was not an intentional act. It was not malicious. The company did not stand to make one dollar of profit," he said.
But Souter took issue with that. He said comparing civil penalties for environmental damage and individual economic harm is like "comparing apples with oranges."
Jeffrey Fisher, representing the plaintiffs, said his clients "received only $15,000 for having their lives and livelihood destroyed and haven't received a dime of emotional distress damages."

Typical politician....
Obama would fire Tony Hayward for making "speaking gaffs" but wouldn't fire Credit Card Joe (Biden) who everytime he opens his mouth he says something stupid.
Speak about hypocrisy.
Jindal wants the feds to bring in vacuums? Once again, he wants to place the burden on the US taxpayers. He won't make a move until the US govt pays or BP pays for it. Where is the state's responsibility in all this?
The Gulf states rake in billions from the oil industry but want no accountability when something goes wrong. They want to have their cake & eat it too! Just think how much money would be available for the cleanup if LA politicians, local, state & federal, put all campaign contributions from big oil into a fund. No need to stop there though as big oil has put their dirty money into the pockets of politicians all over the country. This is why the liability cap hasn't been raised & why many are against the moratorium. Follow the money!!!!
I personally believe that something bigger would work to at least stop the oil spill for a margin of time. From the live feed I see the cap hasn't done much to help the situation. A Cylinder with a larger diameter then the spill itself would be more sufficient then the cap there using at this time.
I feel better knowing that I can trust the integridy of the BP employees working on the BP Spill, and I retract any comments I might have made that were unfair. However, as for those who run the company, they all should be fired and replaced by govt appointments. While I'm at it, I should retract earlier statements in which I called for the awsome, unprecedented, nonnuclear earthmoving capabilities of the U.S military to collapse the well. Apparently, some independent scientists believe that this could lead to seapage that would actually make the BP Spill even worse. These are the same scientists who think that the BP Spill could be as bad as 100.000 barrels/day (at least at some point).
At day 52 and continuing to count, finger-pointing, politics, PR-spin and all related "stuff" are too late, unnecessary, transparent and (almost) insulting.
What needs to be done is to put all that unnecessary energy (pun intended) into "making it right" ... right now and for as long as it takes.
BP should have had (and must have by now) one (1) person who takes all the calls, co-ordinates all the efforts and who stays "off screen/mike" as much as possible. I, for one, do not want or need to see/hear them...all I need to see/hear is what they're accomplishing – every day.
As always, my prayers to all in the line of target/oil; and, special thoughts to friends in Chauvin, LA – "Gone To The Bayou".
Thanks CNN for what you do – each day.
Every politicians is riddled with hypocrisy – even Obama.
Alaskans haven't waited 20 years to get compensation.. they have been receiving every year for 20 years – just as the settlement agreement called for.
Facts are something that totally escapes you while you are spewing your biased political garbage.
Drilling and fishing can work, and has for decades; it is responsible drilling the problem.
You praising the fact that it took 20 years for Alaskans to receive compensation? How many people died w/o ever seeing compensation? They are still being affected by the oil which is still on their shores!!!
Pointing out the hypocrisy by Palin is hardly towing any party lne. They are the facts! Something Palin, and yourself, very seldom rely on!
Everyone is pointing fingers at BP, saying how they are responsible and that they should be paying for everything not to mention the possible criminal charges. I am not a big fan of them either. They are a corporation and their bottom line is profits. I would like to say though that it is worth mentioning the government, both this and previous administrations and certain agencies in charge of monitoring and regulating drilling offshore. Shouldn't they have been more proactive in doing their job to prevent this disaster? All day I hear this talk blaming BP for everything and their negligence in this spill. Are there not inspections for these companies and their activities? If there are not any, why not? Where was the government when the proper regulations needed to be implemented? In a way, one can say that the government can be blamed on this just as much as BP. Anyway, I have not heard this point of view on CNN and though someone should put it out there.
No more fresh shucked oysters in New Orleans?
Shoot me, please!
Watch the news on CNN. BP is SLOW in paying for the damage they have done to the people. Dragging their feet and the people suffer for it.
as someone who grew up down south in mobile al i can only hope that bp will step up to the plate and do the right thing and fix this thing. it breaks my heart to think of all the people who have lost their livelihood and the birds and fish that have lost thier home because of one companies greed. lets hope we have all learned a very hard lesson in this
BP has been getting slammed mercilessly. Much of the criticism has been earned. However, they are spending a lot of money to stop the spill & compensate those that have suffered.
This is a lot more than the giant financials have done in response to the economic damage they did to this country! They caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs, homes & even families. What did they do to attempt to stop the suffering? Nothing! In fact, they got help from the govt to return to huge profits. How many businesses went belly up & never received a penny from Citi, BofA, Goldman, etc?
According to CNN .... people affected by the Exxon Valdez spill received the last of their compensation this year.
It's gone beyond spewing politics – so give us a break on toeing the party line, please.
It's so frustrating trying to watch American Morning.... yall keep telling us what's "coming up" rather than what's going on. I've begun turning to the Weather Channel for news in the morning. They have more news than CNN!
Stock tip of the day.....
Be ready to invest in BP and make several million dollars PROFIT!
Palin keeps criticizing the President & suggested he call her. Why? She wasn't Governor when the Exxon-Valdez spill happened. But she didn't get the Price William Sound cleaned when she was Governor. Heck, she couldn't even cite the Supreme Court case, Alaska -v- Exxon. After 20 years, fisherman & others are still waiting for compensation & the oil still isn't cleaned up. If she couldn't get oil cleaned up after a spill, what can she possibly offer to a leak that is ongoing? Drill baby drill!!!
mmmmmmmmmmm... oil cake..................
No.. it's BPland. BP doesn't care what it does to the Gulf – after all – it's only America.
What is going on with officials prohibiting pictures? It happened to Anderson's crew the other day, now John's crew. What are they trying to hide? Isn't this America? We have a right to know!
Good MorningCNN!
Day 52... same ol' same ol' with the oil spill.
