Abby Sunderland's boat adrift off Australia

(CNN) – Abby Sunderland was attempting to sail solo around the world when rough conditions forced her to make a distress call. When rescue crews last spotted her boat the mast was broken and bent over. That aside, her parents say she can survive until a rescue ship gets to her. It is all well and good that Abby Sunderland gets to go for her dream.. and that her parents allow it, but at the same time the parents should be responsible for all costs, that go with it........they are wanting all the glory without any costs.......

Why are this child's parents in jail for endangering the welfare of a child? What kind of mother says "sure honey, you're 16 now, you are old enough to go sailing around the world by yourself in a sailboat. don't worry about pirates, the most they can do to you is kill you, but at least you're going to get raped first." If this little girl is "adult enough" to sail around the world by herself, then she's old enough to pay back whatever the costs of her rescue were. Abby, if you think you're an adult then forget about highschool, boys, dating and the prom – become emancipated, get a job, get a place of your own, and start supporting yourself. And hey, when you try something stupid again and you don't get rescued, then your parents can only blame themselves for your death because your parents weren't looking out for your best interest, only the best interest of their checkbook! Somebody should remove this child from her "parents" before they kill her because of their greed and selfishness.

Glad to see that Abby is Safe.
But if she way serious about saling round the world. Wouldn't she make a makeshift mast and what ever of a sail. Then make her way to the nearest port.
Have the repairs done and carry on.

Parents should pay for rescue costs. When people put themselves in harms way and it is predictable–they should put up an escrow fund to pay for potential rescue operation.
