Obama continues Gulf visit, preps Oval Office address
(CNN) – President Obama will continue his Gulf Coast visit Tuesday with a stop in Florida's Panhandle, where beaches have started to see signs of oil as crude continues to gush from a ruptured deepwater well.
Obama, on his fourth trip to the region since oil began spewing from the well in April, is scheduled to return to Washington later Tuesday and address the nation about the situation from the Oval Office.
But first, Obama will give a speech of support for oil-impacted communities and American troops while at Pensacola's Naval Air Station Tuesday morning, an administration official said.
Meanwhile Rep. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, will have a chance to grill executives from five major oil companies on Capitol Hill.
The witness list for Tuesday's hearing of his House Energy and Environment subcommittee includes chief executives of BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Shell Oil. Read more

Hey Chetry, do you see many white collars making fun of the "stupid" blue collar bubba's now along the Gulf Coast?
Think of the gallons of gasoline we'd save if people vacationed at home. Phooey on the tourism pollution contraption. Take a poor man's vacation and work around the house.
America is a cess pool of rich murders. Two wars and then this so let's give the rich another tax cut.
You keep stating that the boycott does no good against BP because the local stations are locally owned. That may be true but if you have a BP sign on your gas stations, YOU HAVE TO BE PAYING SOME TYPE OF ROYALTY TO BP!!!!!
During my lifetime, I have been told that while working on my car I must recover the oil and bring it to a disposal site. If I did not do so and someone turn me into the police, I could be arrested and fined for committing such an offense. Why is it that Tony Hayward can get away with spilling billions of gallons of oil and have no consequences for his actions? Even though, through internal e-mails, his engineers and other personnel were saying that this was an accident waiting to happen. The attitude that Tony Hayward has is comparable with many other corporations within America. The almighty dollar comes first. By not listening to his engineers and other concerned management staff. He has committed any illegal act. Knowing what the consequences could be he continued forward and committed second-degree murder. Why has this man not been arrested yet? If Mr. Obama a would put his foot down and have him arrested, maybe this would tell other companies that safety comes first, not money.
Goodmorning, I am an ex MMS/BLM,er, Iserved for 16 years in inspection and enforcement with the agency. What troubles me is that no one is asking the right questions, to get the true and full story, and beleave me its's worse than we currently are lead to told. First, as you know there is restricted airspace over the affected area of the oil spill, so the Government, BP and other agencies have inforced a media blockout. The reasons is because of beaurcarcy, politics, greed, and the main underlaying curption . BP has nothing to fear, because if BP goes down, so will President Obama, and other governmantal officials. That is why the Secretary of MMS refused to testify before congress and was fired/resigned. Ibeleave the amount of oil is producing at 50,000 barrels per day for 3,000,000 currently in the Gulf coast ocean, with about 345,000 MCF of gas vented per day. The displacement of drilling mud with seawater is not even in the APD as an approved practice, and goes to show that the BP company man sought to save money by trying to cut costs before cementing in the production casing. So, thats why there is produced fluids between the BOP hydraulics rams and an open production casing and the riser casing. It's like having a nonstopping soda bottle with a straw in the mouth of the bottle opening, heaven forbid if the ocean surfface casing was not pressure tested or was not cemented correctly. If this is the case that the actual BOP was faulsified then there is nothing that we can do, except plug the well with the releif wells as the only hope to stop the spillage. The good news is that I have solutions for all aspects of the spillage, first Ican nanfacture a 10 inch pump which can transfer 50,000 to 70,000 bpd of produced fluids. For the water column Ican design a product I call the jelly fish, this uses special ionic metal copper rods that will change the ionic structure in saltwater, allowing for complete oil/saltwater seperation. Iwas doing this long before Kevin Costner came up with his centrifuge machine. For the ocean surface, Ican pump over 5,000 bpd with a 3 inch pump with my emulsion breaker technology. Larger and many pumps can be placed on many floatitation vessals. Finally, the legistics of storage cappacity as well as reclaiming facilaties and royaltys rights would need addressing, as well as cleanup with my pumping system on the shoreline and marshes and freshwater tributaries. Roland,
April 21, 2010 is the equivalent of December 7, 1941; a date that will go down in infamy. The war declared is not against another nation, but a war against big business corporations and hopefully will be the end of such nonsense. Too few individuals are profiteering at the demise of the rest of us. The concept of money needs to be re-defined and based upon available natural resourses and proven human talent.
Thank you for allowing public interaction on this show.
John and Kiran...cheers for the bullfighter spot...have to say that this meeting with BP and congress would be far more entertaining with Tony Hayword mouthing lies, and John Cleese doing a voice over of truths!!..."it's only a flesh wound!" Nice to have a giggle for a change..."the bull's dead"!!!!! Thanks for making my day!
My solution to the disaster is what the experts have said all along was the long term solution, relief wells!!! Until they are constructed & in place, give all the politicians & media who have been picking up globs of oil w/ sticks, buckets & sponges to remove more oil. Instead of holding or covering news conferences, do something constructive!!! And where are all the local & state first responders?
General Honore needs to be declared Supreme Commander much the same as Eisenhauer during WW2. This disaster is much more incidious and defining than 9-11. Obama's Katrina, hell no, this is Obama's 9-11. Need to 'mobilize' America to solve this problem, both short and long term. If handled correctly, unemployment and underemployment will drop dramatically. It is apparent that there is more than enough 'work' for every man, woman and child. Put a 'bounty' of $100/ Barrel for every barrel collected from the slick with the Oil Industry as a whole picking up the tab, NOT the tax payer. Clean up the Gulf until not a drop can be found anywhere and the Ecosystem restored. This is 'jist' of what needs to be said from the Oval office.
Isn't it high time America take over the utilities and oil companies? It is provided in the 9th Amendment that we can.
Good morning!

Christine Romans isn't BP the only corrupt run corporation of all the ones that trade their over valued shares on your pals exchanges down Wall Street way...I know if there was any other corrupt and evil cost cutting unregulated corporations on the NYSE that you'd break the story and then our honest US government would clean it up...no chemical companies. drug companies or any other oil companies ae bad boys are they?
All this mess in the Gulf of Mexico chasing a vanishing reserve, OIL! Why have the news media, especially you folks at CNN not done a better job of understanding and explaining to we un-informed Americans the problem of 'Peak Oil'. We are chasing a vanishing resource. We should be conserving as much oil as we can for the days to come when it becomes really scarce. We use petroleum in so many ways, burning it for fuel makes the least sense for this precious resource. Natural gas might be a bridge fuel but it is not unlimited either. We must achieve reliance on renewable, sustainable fuels and energy sources. It is a shame that we do not have solar panels on everyone's roof by now. If we had embarked on a NASA or 'Manhatten Project' style effort years ago, we could already have offset at least 50% of our burning of fossil fuels. (btw, the religious right does not even understand or accept the term 'fossil fuels', they think 'god' put the oil there for us and he will just keep on doing so for our benefit. Pathetic ignorance)
From the information I have seen, the riser pipe is 21 inches in diameter. I cannot find information if that is Inner Diameter (ID) or Outer Diameter (OD). For the purpose of this note I will assume it is OD.
Pictures show a connection flange connecting the blowout preventer to the now cut riser pipe. Manufacture a larger two piece collar-type flange that will fit around the existing flange. Bolt it to the existing pipe structure, around the existing flange. Have a larger ID pipe, one that can be bolted to the newly placed flange, lowered over the oil plume an onto the existing pipes. This new pipe should have a shut-off valve on it but the valve should be in the open position as it is lowered. The pipe probably should have a removable flared skirt, like the bell nozzle of a rocket engine, that will direct the escaping oil plume into the new pipe as it is lowered on the new flange. Once the pipe is in position, remove the bell skirt assembly and bolt the new pipe to the new flange. Once the new pipe is securely attached to the new valve close the valve. Because of the pressure of the escaping oil, closing the valve would put a lot of pressure on the new assembly, as well as the existing flange. For this reason a collection pipe assembly should be attached ASAP. Once attached the valve should be opened slowly, reducing pressure on both the new and existing mechanisms, and collecting the vast majority of the escaping oil.
Some oil will most likely still leak from the new flange area but it should be a lot less than what is leaking now.
Can't CNN contact a materials engineer and a petroleum engineer to discuss this idea???
There has been so much outrage over the Gulf oil leak & the damage that has been done & will be done. For decades though, Americans have turned a blind eye to the damage being done in the Niger Delta. We get 40% of our imported oil from this region. US co's like Shell & Exxon have leaked millions of barrels into the rivers & onto the land. Life expectancy there is now a little over 40 years.
These people have to suffer their whole lives due to the devastation caused by oil. They lost their livelihood, fishing, decades ago. Now many don't have access to clean drinking water. Not much has been done or is being done to clean up that oil. Americans didn't care because we needed the oil. The people in the Gulf won't ever suffer as much as the Nigerians have & will.
Isn't this newsworthy. Why is #CNN/AMFix not mentioning the issues #Apple & #ATT are having with #iPhone delivery pre-orders?
If arrested wouldn't the woman who shot herself in the shoulder receive medical care while she is in jail?
HI
I keep seeing the live web cam showing the oil coming from the riser pipe that you tried to cut off last week, Just below there is a flange, something round, measure that flange , then get a pipe that fits that flange dimension, drop it down over the flange and up to the ship above,
How hard can it be. Just a mile of pipe ? ETC............................
SENATOR who put your hand's on that person!!! NOW, THIS PERSON belong's to "WE THE PEOPLE" there are "LAW'S" caused YOU LAID your hand's on him!!! YOU need to resign cause the "PRESSURE" of the job is getting to you!!! USA is the way!!! NOT THIS WAY!!! YOU just been "BLOGABOOED"!!!
We heavily rely on calls from beach houses to make money to support our families. The only people can get help are the ones at the beaches. I understand that but no one even talks about people who are really close to beaches and live in FL. Where do they think we get are business from? I live in FL and get business from DC or NY? The claims process is joke. We can't even submit one because we are at Tallahassee 20 mins from the beaches. I am sure we will not get oil in Tallahassee but we already have no business because of BP. We'll reflect at the poll soon. They can talk and do politics now while people try to support their families with no income. They ain't getting my vote.
After doing a fair amount of research I have become a bit alarmed. Using the 50,000 barrels per day figure capture rate, which is far from the entire amount being sent out from under the ocean floor, this this is producing an outragous amount of oil. Far more the average. this means that the pressure it is being sent up with is even more outragous. No wonder this thing blew when you cut corners. I think that they hit the mother load. Much more oil and gas then they expected. I think that this deserves an inquiry if teh oportunity presents itself. Very interesting aye???
