Obama, BP set for Gulf oil showdown

(CNN) – President Obama will have his showdown on Wednesday with BP top executives and says he will tell the company it must pick up the tab for the massive oil disaster in the Gulf.

Obama vowed Tuesday to unleash whatever resources may be needed to fight the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and to keep the pressure on BP.

"We will fight this spill with everything we've got for as long it takes," Obama said after two consecutive days surveying the Gulf Coast, which is threatened by a massive oil spill that began April 20 and continues to pump oil into the Gulf waters and worry into Gulf residents.

In a prime-time speech to a national audience, the president predicted that, "in the coming days and weeks," efforts to contain the leak "should capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out of the well."

Ending the leak should occur later in the summer, when a relief well being drilled by BP is slated for completion, he said. Read more

we all as viewers would greatly appreciate hearing daily, detailed, updates on how many skimmers are in the water cleaning up the oil, maps of where they are & the number of people working on the spill containment ( not including administrative personnel, & not those cleaning the birds). we would also like to see photos of the skimmers & those in action on the water laying boom & the oil burning

this is just ludicrous. the ultimate power of big business and those that have their pockets lined is absolutely sickening. at least x-pres. bush had the texas size fortitude to not care what other people thought about his decisions. well obama... here's your time to shine. grab this bull by the horns and stop with the useless banter/dog and pony show. make a metal parachute with a hole in the middle and suction hose attached tho start sucking up the oil from the plume below. having problems keeping it anchored, try some guywire cables anchoring the unit to some of those cinder blocks down their. regardless... stop letting bp make the decisions... they don't know what they're doing.

why hasnt bp been given a time line to have the oil leak stopped?then if it is not stopped at that time somebody with the know how can come in and put all cost to bp and stop the leak.because it would be real easy to do.if everybody would just use common sense and look at the big picture.IT WOULD BE SO EASY......

Tom- Vermillion Ohio, Thank you, for this information!
So who would be able to manufacture collassal sheets of 10 ml LDPE,
They dont have to be 5000ft long just as long and wide as they can be made readily, Converters have only so much capabilty without revamping. and then shipping boats any that are willing, team up in pairs and suspend the sheeting between them . The boats would surround the area and then let their ldpe unfirl heavily weighted into the depths.
The LDPE would have to rise above the surface as well, so each ship would have to battle currents ect... to keep the sheets together, like a giant jellyfish of plastic beneath the surface keeping most of the oil from escaping the area. They would keep as close to each other as they could to avoid gaps . The ships stay there until the oil stops flowing.

If there are any manufacturers out there who can do this please send cnn a quote. We will forward the quote to those in charge and see....
The vessels will be there, just as they were in wwII to rescue the soldiers stranded on the beaches in Europe.

Oh Im sure this idea is so far fetched but I am no genius. Please Obama you need to get the help of genius to save this and stop waiting on BP or the status quo national guard ect.... to do it. Stop worrying about your image and get in there, stay there, and find the right helpers and roll up your sleeves and fix this and dont leave until its done. This is your watch. It is up to you. I will help, and I am sure I am not alone.

Ms felona, your ability to comprehend human limitations and our 'can do' spirit is among the wisest of today's posts.
Terry B, whatever makes you think Obama had a role in causing this disaster is beyond me. Do you think he plotted with BP during the Bush administration, when the drilling began, to add to the burdens of the economic crisis and two wars? How come you don't wonder instead, since Haliburton did the last work on the well days before it exploded, if Cheney didn't do it to add the burden in hopes Obama would collapse under the pressure. No president since FDR has been faced with this number and type of problems.

I t would be nice to hear a comparison to the health issues our volunteers are going through now and will be going through for some time, to the health issues that the volunteers that cleaned up the Exxon Valdes spill. C'mon folks get this story out the American people are not foolish enough to believe that these good people that are helping to clean up this mess that BP created are not going to have health issues from handling this crude oil. I just spent an hour reading about the Exxon Valdez health issues that those volunteers not only went through but are still going through right now ! Who is going to pay their medical costs starting anytime and ongoing through their entire life ?

I guess my last blogg was too long to be posted, so how about one
that is short and to the point.
If President Oawsome Bama , would give every man and woman
Who paid taxes last year, and that includes people on unemployment,
$10,000.00, in a rebate, it would keep our economy afloat, keep us from
Destitude, and we, unlike the big companies we bailed out would acually
Pay the taxes on it , rather than find ways to write it off , like all the big
Companies we saved, and didn't even get as much as a thank you from!!!
And I promise, The grateful people of our country will remember in
2012, when it will be time for our hero to be reelected, and keep on saving us , from the distruction of the last administration!!
Thank you, Stephanie Scheat, Las Vegas, Nv

Obama saying that bp will pick up the tab for the gulf cleanup is a lie. Six months ago while obama was president the supreme court reduced the claim against exxon for the valdez spill from 5 billion to 500 thousand dollars. I did not hear a word from obama saying this was unfair. Now he says he will make BP pay. Why can't he freeze the assets of exxon and bp, why can't he nationalize the oil. He along with congress are owned by corporations. There will be no break up of the large banks, there will be no end to the derivatives market, bp will not pay all the claims, and the gulf coast will never be the same again. All you hear are lies from obama and congress.

We've been talking about changing our energy from fossil fuels to solar, wind and nuclear energy for decades now and our economy still relies on oil to make it run. What we need is to have these big oil companies change their source of energy to solar, wind and nuclear energy despite what will happen to the market economy! We have to start somewhere even if it brings down the economy for a few years until new energy sources are used worldwide! It will bring back new jobs with better technology!

Could the slow, undermanned and inaffective response to this desaster be a deliberate act by the President to push his green cap and trade agenda that he couldn't get passed before. Now at the exspense of the gulf coast. Never let a desaster go to waste is his moto right.

@Cathy Fellona, you are correct in your thinking, concerning the column. The giant "tube" could be made of LDPE, 10-mil thick, and rise continuously from ocean floor to surface. The oil and gas would be contained. Can be done.

So. BP should "pay" to clean up the Gulf, and restore a "way of life", along with the environment for the residents of the Gulf Coast. Okay. So, if we're going to use that as the barometer, then AIG and the rest of the criminal enterprises on Wall St. should be made to "pay" for restoring the "way of life, and the environments for the residents of, Flint, and Detroit, Michigan. I'm certain the residents of Ohio would get on board with this for their economically savaged "cultures, and way of life", too.

I see no difference between these two examples of corporate greed and negligence.

I'm sick of polls. first, a sampling of a couple hundred to a couple of thousand people can't speak for 300 million Americans. Secondly, many are led by the media which has gone from reporting the facts to offering opinions. To make matters worse, many of those opinions are from the talking heads who supposedly "experts" on every issue.

The real experts said from the beginning that relief wells were the only solution. I had to laugh when the media was saying we need to send Navy seals to fix the leak. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that humans can't dive that far!!!

Then the media got people's hopes up w/ caps, junk shots, etc. This despite the fact that all these had failed in much shallower water. Several have suggested nuking the well w/o regard to the consequences of such action. The media has been steering public opinion on this disaster & I'm disappointed Americans allow themselves to be steered in such a manner.

Now we have Gov Jindal on CNN talking about Cajun ingenuity for using large shop vacs!!! Shop vacs have been around for decades & myself & others suggested here & elsewhere that they should start using them instead of picking up globs w/ sticks or paper cups. People are suggesting burning & skimming the oil because the media hasn't reported that they have been doing both since shortly after the rescue was called off.

Ronald Assee writes: Is the US and the rest of the world willing to give up their present way of life by the use of products made from oil,by leaving their cars home and ride to wk by going state to state by horse until some other means of green transport can be mass produced, stop crying and give BP time to fix the leak

This is exactly the type of forward thinking that is destroying this country, a blatant refussal to acknowledge the solar, wind, and electric car technologies that are already here. In 1942 Americans CHANGED their way of living to accomodate the needs of the war, and we had the opportunity to do the same on 9/12/01, and we now have the opportunity again WITHOUT such retarded notions such as riding a horse. What Assee is really saying is "I'm too selfish to change". This attitude would have been severely condemned in 1942, and yet here we are in 2010, collapsed economy, at war inthe middle east, and a Gulf ecosystem that will be dead for years to come. Brilliant!

The rhetoric, the scams, the double talk....These are just a few of the reasons why i have chosen to never, ever vote. As much as i admire Barack Obama, he is nothing more than a pea in a pod when it comes to dealing with "Big Oil".
It is my opinion that all the oil companies want this well capped. Not for the citizens of the gulf states, or for the environmental impact. But rather to keep their business dealings, and the ways in which they do business away from the general public
It is so obvious that BP doesn't give a hoot for this country, or it's residents. They are here for profit. Nothing more, and our government has rolled out a red carpet for them while they plunder the wallets & purses of us hard working americans.
"Make No Mistake" This is turning more into a joke than a catastrophic event.

The people in the gulf need to understand that the president has other issues to deal with. We all understand the seriousness of the problem, but it is not the end of the world. The president still has to deal with the problems related to the Middle East, North Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan and terrorism. All the chatter about what the president will say or not say is quit ludicrous. Until the oil whole is plugged, his polls numbers will continue to go down. He needs to better coordinate his command structure, and let BP know that he is the one that is in charge.

You know what...no matter what our President does in any level of protecting our land, he is being criticized by the RACIST people in this heavily racist country. President Obama cant even wake up without being blamed for what happens due to other people's actions. Our country is so racist we cant even support our President because those who dont want to see a black man succeed in anything that he does. Remember these oil issues were already in placed before our President was elected. And who were the one's that had STAKE in these oil companies? Yes we know who. I am sick and tired of hearing the Media who are guided by those who want to discredit our President when we should be resolving this issue locally. This is a State issue and should be handled by the State. If they need the help from the Federal government then thats ok. But stop the inuendos and making our country look bad in face of disaster. No wonder other countries look at us as Weak and always TREAD on US. They see the racism and those that want our President to fail. What they should do is make BP bring down their GAS PRICES TO 95 CENTS A GALLON.

We need prayers. Prayers for the man who has two wars going on, a financial crisis and much more than a president has ever had to deal with so early in his term.

Serious prayers also for the evil people who may have have conspired behind the scenes to bring about this unusual oil spill and to provide him with his own Katrina or 9/11. I would not put anything pass some individuals who do not like having a black man as president.

My questions are. Has anyone of the (oil men and their friends)Bushes contacted the President to offer their expertise? He is and never was an oil man.The Bushes know a lot about the inner workings of the oil business and some in the cabal.

This is strange because we have not heard much from Palen, Mccain, Bush or even evil Dick C.

I am asking a questions others are increasingly asking. Conspiracy to mess this black President up so early in his administration? You tell me.It is food for thought.

Greetings: The critics of the oil spill response are uninformed. When a spill happens the Coast Guard who are the federal govt} is the first responder. They did respond. The oil company is required by law to deal with the problem.
In this case BP minimized the problem. Since the well was 5000 feet deep no one but them had the technology to verify the flow. BP has not been upfront about the size if the problem. The president has responded as best as he can within the framework of the law.
He now sees that BP has covered up the problem. Now he must see how to get around law to respond to an unprecedented emergency.
I fully support the President. He has been handed a bag of manure by the cumlative effects of Republican leadership since Nixon.
Republican leadership has handed the country over to big oil, insurance and the defense contractors. These industries have kept us on oil, in wars and in debt . They however are doing quite well.
You will see how allied the GOP is with big oil as they seek to limit the amount BP has to pay.
    Sincerely, Greg Hamby

It is a shame we have a instant response with our military to be able to go and blow up and kill on a moments notice. We spend billions and now trillions on our military. But when it comes to a response to a oil spill our red tape we have built up over years and decades becomes overpowering. If we had this red tape in our military what would happen to quick response. But we now say keep the government out of companys trying to do business, they can police themselves. BP and the other oil companies have now proved that wrong.

The President is not "superman". He is doing a great job given the circumstances which confront him. What does the media expect him to do --take a straw and suck up the oil? Why are you trying to make the oil spill, "a Katrina incident"? The question I have is, what would you do differently? In essence, if you don't have any new ideas to help, then why do you think he is a "miracle worker"?

I thought that some of the best oil wells in Saudi Arabia produced only 25,000 barrells per day (BPD). Are the estimates of the BP's well BPD three times better than Saudi Arabia best wells? When BP's well is controlled and producing, that should be one profitable oil field.

The media should do a little "investigative reporting," if they remember what it is. Please tell the American public how much oil, chemicals & toxins are placed into the Gulf, legally & illegally, every year by freighters, oil rigs & oil refineries. The truth is that the water in the Gulf hasn't been clean for decades. The oil industry has been killing the Gulf long before this leak. And it's not the 1st time oil from a leak has reached the shores. Though the Ixtoc 1 leak happened in the Mexico side of the Gulf, oil reached US shores.

Why didn't the Gulf states have an emergency plan of action for the next, the present, leak? They were warned that another leak was inevitable & last year's leak off the Australian coast should have been further warning. However, even this disaster hasn't slowed down their call to drill baby drill!!!

Good morning John & Kiran. I can’t believe 58 days into this fateful event & it’s still the Top Story every morning. Is that a record or what? I don’t understand why people are so quick to lay blame on everyone else, those are usually the people with no real solutions dare I say the GOP party as of late! Everybody wants to blame the Obama administration & BP for this catastrophe but if they had a solution or a way of reaching one don’t you think they will do everything in their power to do so. According to the new estimates BP has lost hundreds of millions of dollars of “inventory” in the past 2 months don’t you think it’s in their best interest to STOP this leak? Let’s go back to basics and be a part of the solution not part of the problem, then perhaps more time can be spent being constructive. Constructive criticism is one thing, I didn’t know us Americans were this hard to please. God Bless America & I pray for all the people suffering from this disaster!!

Maybe I'm just being "sensitive", but I got a strange feeling when the President referred to the Gulf Coast states as "our neighbors to the south". We are NOT Mexico, Central or South America. We are part of the United States, not "our neighbors to the south". Of course, this is the same way we've been seen for ages, so nothing new.

The politicians in this country can prove they are concerned about American citizens by taking the contributions they have received from BP & the other major oil co's & place it into a fund to help pay for the cleanup & recovery. And refuse any more contributions until this leak is stopped & precautions are taken against another spill.

This would be much more beneficial to those in the Gulf than to call for an end to the moratorium & for more drilling. Taking millions in contributions & then blocking bills to increase the liability cap & to strip oil co's of $35 billion in tax breaks smells worse than the oil or dead fish in the Gulf.

Keep your fingers & toes crossed! IF President Obama gets BP to put ANY money into an account you had better consider it a major accomplishment. I would bet my last dime that right now BP's attornies are burning the midnight oil on how they can get out of paying! Lets also recognize that all of us share some responisbility in this disaster. Refusing to consider alternative energy, refusing to demand vehicles that get better gas mileage, refusing to raise cain and vote out all of those elected officials that took "bribes" from any oil comany, or any business, Putting pressure on our elected officials that they need to start looking out for the American people instead of themselves I would put to you that if WE the people voted out EVERY elected official that the new ones would understand that WE the people are fed up and will not accept politics as usual anymore.

Regarding Alina Cho's story on college applications and her amazement at SAT scores of 2400 out of 2500, before fawning all over the student, she needs to ask whether. the student benefited from an SAT prep course. As a collegiate advisor, I see plenty of student with high SAT scores that benefited from such a course. Yet, these high scoring "aces" fail to measure up under the day to day pressures of performing in the classroom. Instead of accepting UTube videos as part of the application process, perhaps colleges and universities should reconsider what they are using to separate applicants, from among the traditional measures. A high SAT score can result from a number of factors some that are indicative of success and others that aren't.

Americans are to blame for the Gulf oil fiasco. How could this be? Corporations only sell what we want to buy!

Republican leaders vehemently support corporate takeover of American democracy whlle Democrat leaders put on a performance of being on the side of American citizens but ultimately side with the corporate takeover model, and then theres the dismal Supreme Court that is clearly bought off by corporate America. But it will always boil down to Americans being brainwashed and manipulated by corporate America to consume more, just as Bush encouraged immediately following 9/11/01, when he should have been telling Americans to cut back. But Bush's administration WAS the oil industry, and profits were more important than our soldiers lives. Now oil profits are more important than our food sources. Corporate politicians and ceo's will always tell Americans what they want to hear while burying all democracy in profits. Housing, banking, and energy sectors are clear examples of this anti American model, and these thieves will walk scott free with billions of hardworking Americans dollars, simply because Americans lack introspection of behavior and consumption.

The most effective vote cast today is NOT cast at the polls, but at the cash register. This is the American citizens only hope, but we must remember Milton Friedmans economic theory that all American politicians support. Milton says "regulation creates distortions in the markets", and "deregulated markets will police themselves naturally". What an idiot!!! Man ALWAYS fails when presented with such lucrative and profitable "moral hazards". So again, the American citizen is to blame because we dictate what is sold to us by what we purchase, and corporations only supply what we want to buy. Drill baby drill!

Next Presser he should say, since this is a huge problem it is way too difficult to attend to the normal details and regulations that are within the dept's be it EPA, Wildlife etc. He expects the common sense consencus to prevail. Some rules must be broken to afford the flexibility to get the job done. Mayors should be making the final calls if an out of the box approach is required. This is an all hands on deck required approach.

Where is the American ingenuity we hear so much about? The free-market at work on the clean-up. It seems to me if I could load a vac-truck onto a barge I would drag it off the coast into the middle of a large slick and start sucking it up. Its worth $75 per barrel. When the truck is full drag it over to a refinery and off-load it right there. If you can suck up 1000 barrels a day thats worth $75000. Seems to be some profit there. The Gulf gets cleaned and ppl get their lives back. Win Win.

Why can't they remove the bolts off of the blowout preventer , remove it then replace it with a large valve that could then be closed off?

Too soon for a clean energy bill that expedites research of alternative energy? The time for it was after the oil embargo in the 70's & steps were taken. Unfortunately, Reagan cut funding & the scientists & researchers went to Asia & Europe. We had an electric car, the EV1, decades ago. It could have been perfected by now. Instead, we are starting over from scratch. We have to import the technologies that began here, like wind turbines & solar panels. It's not too early to seek out alternative energy. It's way pat time!!!

A leader HAS to be an orator John. You have to know what your up against before you enact a plan. If he gets it wrong YOU will be the first one to complain about it. Lets not go off half-cocked.

Good Morning John, Karin and Christine:

I am one of those 6 Million. I have been out of work for more than a year. It is the biggest issue in my life now at 61 1/2 years old. As a former US Navy Veteran and an IT Professional with College Teaching experience, here is what I see.

The country has be sold we no longer are focusing on the issues of creating jobs. The Congress and my President have been side tracked by the Oil Spill.

The jobs remain as the single biggest issue to the country. No jobs, no tax money coming in, no spending at places of business. This is the major cycle to keep the country alive.

Where are the incentives for Small Businesses to be created, for Small Businesses to create jobs. Where are the incentives for Big Business to create jobs.

There is no time for party bickering.

The country needs NOW MANY NEW permanent and temporary water filtration facilities in the Gulf of Mexico area. The country needs to convert old ships to become large scale skimmers and tank transfer vessels. These are things needed now. Use old Navy Ships to clean the local marshes.

An old Navy Destroyer can purify about 1/2 million gallons of water in just a few hours. They purify water well as part of the boiler operating process. Re-deploying and operating them creates jobs. There are many in the Gulf Region. There are many in the North East... Norfolk and Philadelphia. They create jobs.... NOW!!

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.... it is that simple. Congress are you listening.

We have two new words to add to the dictionary -' vuvuzellaed' as in being drowned out by a persistent annoying drone, and
'a nungasser' – an attention-seeking colleague who loudly claims no-one else is doing their job or working as hard as he is. One who thinks he has all the answers, but hardly ever makes a deadline; can be identified by his frequent cry of "Somebody should do Something!."

example: John tried valiantly to explain the marketing challenges but was vuvuzellaed by the two Nungassers at the back of the room.

Ya to Joe from Morning Joe on MSMBC this morning . Its about time the meda gets behind Obama and Mika was rThats what we need to see more support for what Obama is doing and what he has done from the start of this leak. We the people need to admit this our fault as much as it is BP's Lets face facts we want that oil we feel we have the right to get it and nowe because of the way we are, we are getting what we desirve what we are getting. LOOK we need to wise up to what our representives in congress and senete have been doing to our counrty and they have been doing it to us for years, starting with letting our jobs go over seas that started in the 70's. We have set on our hands and let this and all the other things that our gov. has done to us, so now we want it all but you know what we will never get any of it back. But now is the time to get behind our presidenjt and get this mess taken care of. Our President now is not the same as past Preaidents he is a smart and mild mannered compared to past Presidents but i like his way of doing things and feel its about time we have a Preaident that understands the everyday person and has showed us that time after time just remember the GOP screaming DRILL BABY DRILL DRILL BABY DRILL. But to noones surprise they are screaming a differant tune now But lets not forget who it was and who it will be again, Tell me will we fall for the GOP lines of defeat agains this President will we be lead down the garden path again by the GOP. What we need to remember , We have a great President and he will do what has to be done. Also I have not heard any thing better to be done, I hate to say it but 24/7 news is a bad thing when all they do is stir up the problem and are not apart of the fixing of the problem and also tell the loud mouth who get on these shows to shut up if they do not have a better plan in hand. Nothing burns my butt more that when the GOP gets on and have nothing to say but what they think the President is not doing and not giving any better ideas just how long are we going to have to put up with this

Please ask President Obama to call the greatest minds in undersea exploration and undersea construction. Get them in a room and ask them to call the manufacturers of material that they identify as effective in those depths. Get them to come into the room. Get the engineers who work on the assembly lines and.... let all these minds converge and come up with a design for a structure to contain and mitigate damage.
Some kind of a giant sleve....Who knows. I fear that the wound is not healable on the ocean floor. The gas pressures and the depths and ocean pressures are more than we can fix. The point is that the oil executives and oil people are about getting oil, and now protecting themselves from atack. They cannot be about fixing this and protecting our greatest resources: our ocean, its creatures and our coastline and its beauty. That must be coming from greater minds than their's. If they were smart enough, to fix this, they would have seen that this particular formation was too volatile to deal with/ Instead their greed blinded them to the truth, and they drilled anyway despite the known dangers that this formation had in store. I am so stupid and so uneducated, but I want to know that our nation asked all the greatest minds to get together and come up with a way to reduce the spill spreading all over the place. Through out History, Our nation has done this, why not now? The booms and skimmers are ineffective. There needs to be a structure around all of this, 100 ft above and 250 ft below. A giant chain of floating docks, and tie the material all around this mess. ships would have to enter through a gate like system where it is untied and pulled in and then put back up afetr the ship has navigated this. CNN could you set up a reward for the solution to contain this spill and mitigate damage? Everyone could contribute. We could watch the numbers grow along side of the spill. The greatest minds are probably out there, but they have probably been let go as they probably blew the whistle or showed restraint more than greed. They are probably out of work. If we go to the moon, if we can build skyscrapers that reach the clouds, we can do more than this....Just please stop expecting the oil people to do it. Thats like asking the wolf to to repairs to the hen house. Its just not their skill set. Please ask the other media to stop distracting everyone from what is going on. Every channel every screen should have this oil picture on it until it is solved. Please the ocean is my greatest joy and treasure other than my loved ones, but I ask for unselfish reasons of the fact that I feel the pain of allh the human and wildlife and seacreatures al l crying out, and it is deafenning. Cant everyone hear it? cathy

Whoever approved this to be broadcast should be retired now,
People do not pass out for no reason.

I can't believe the headline for the 'jaywalking' story is "Cop Punches Female..."! If I were to react like she did, I would EXPECT to be punched. People need to learn to show some respect to our police men and women. After seeing the video, I think CNN was wrong to headline the incident like it did.

What will happen if more and more citizens stop showing any regard for our laws and police? It's already happening with illegal immigrants. When I hear the word 'illegal', I instantly think it's 'against the law'.

Why is no one talking about the inappropriate relationship between corporations and our government at the root of countless social, economic, environmental and health crises?

Stop bickering about the politics of Obama mentioning alternative energy ‘too soon’to promote a political agenda. The real issue here is how any corporation can be allowed to buy the support of our elected representatives in Congress, our Supreme Court justices, and bribe our regulatory agencies into self-castration. The executive branch is so thoroughly distracted by foreign wars, environmental catastrophes and economic uncertainty that even if they tried to address the corporate takeover of our “democracy,” the attempt would flounder in a congress that has been crippled by lobbyists. When will we remember how many Americans have died to ensure that “government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth”?

Oh and by the way its not just the oil industry! Wake Up! Don't wait for another disaster to implement superficial regulatory changes; give the government back to the people.

At a Congressional hearing yesterday, the CEO of Exxon-Mobil said it best, "when things like this happen, we are not well equipped to deal w/ them." Yet, the Senate, led by mostly GOP Senators, has blocked raising the liability cap at least 4 times. They blocked stripping the oil co's of $35 billion in tax breaks. Many are calling for an end to the moratorium & for more drilling.

The President is limited by law as how much action he can take against BP despite what the talking heads keep telling people. Since the govt isn't in the oil business, they are less equipped than the major oil co's in dealing w/ things like this. There's no way the President or the govt can force BP to delay/suspend their dividend payments to shareholders or to open up a multi-billion dollar compensation fund.

Do we really want to expand drilling before new laws/regulations are in place? People are surprised that BPcan't fix a leak 5,000 ft under the surface. The fact is they can't stop a leak at 165 ft under the surface either. This was proven by the Ixtoc 1 leak. The same "fixes" that failed then are failing now. So don't believe the politicians when they say drilling in shallower water is safer.

I am happy to see that BP will be made to pay for this disaster. Instead of the usual, the taxpayers! Believe me, we have paid enough in gas and oil tax as it is. I can't believe they only contribute less than 1% of they revenue towards safety. Certainly tells me where the main priorities lie. Good Luck Gulf Coast. My prayers are with you.

    1. Could BP not be charged under the USA Patriot Act with waging economic and environmental terrorism against the United States? Perhaps a weekend vacation at Gitmo would change the attitude of BP executives!
    2. Put 1 more star on Gen Honore and put him in charge.

BP should be made to pay reparations for what they have done, but where is the same ferver with regard to the financial crisis. Shouldn't all those banks and ratings agencies have to pay into an escrow and compensate for the damage done on Main Street, the unemployed and those who have lost their homes. Horrible as it is, by comparison the Gulf oil spill is a little regional affair, not even big enough to affect the price of oil. Let's have a level playing field Obama.
