Companies seek to end moratorium on drilling

(CNN) – As oil continues gushing into the Gulf of Mexico from a ruptured undersea well, a federal judge will hear arguments Monday from companies seeking an end to a temporary moratorium on deepwater drilling.

The six-month ban, instituted by the government last month, halts all drilling in more than 500 feet of water and prevents new permits from being issued.

But a company that provides boats and equipment to the offshore drilling industry says in a lawsuit that the government has no evidence that existing operations pose a threat to the gulf.

Hornbeck Offshore Services LLC and other oil service companies named as plaintiffs in the case say they want a court order declaring the moratorium invalid and unenforceable. A federal judge will hear their arguments Monday morning.

Government lawyers argue that the temporary suspension of deepwater drilling is necessary to assess the safety and regulation issues and reduce the risk of another environmental disaster. Read more

Again.... people forget that Obama's adminstration signed off on the safety procedures on that oil rig before the accident occured – so they have the same responsible to it as any other past Presidents.

al Qaeda makes another threat and were supposed to back out of Afghanistan. This threat should make our troops more ambitious to get Afghanistan more stable under the governments control! And we should use our drones more in the tribal areas of Pakistan to let them know that their threats will only put more pressure upon them!

Hey John Roberts, BP didn't name Dudley to be the point man for BP in response to the photos of Hayward's yachting. This was done last week after Hayward's testimony in front of Congress!!! If there wasn't an uproar over his visit to DC, there shouldn't be when he spends a day w/ his family. After all, he isn't one of the people building the relief wells, skiimming the oil, cleaning the beaches, etc.

Why are you constantly obsessing over the CEO of BP back home at a sporting event on Father's Day weekend? He has been relieved of running the Gulf clean-up and I think that by obsessing over Tony Hayward, we are ignoring more important issues for our country. Please quit covering this non-story.

More and more we are hearing the name Haliburton regarding the oil spill in the gulf. Who was the man once connected to Haliburton, an upfront nemesis of the president?

Did he get his wish to put added pressure on this president and cause him more sleepless nights? I guess two wars, severe economic problems and now an oil spill is not enough.

I say investigate, investigate and investigate everybody connected to Haliburton including one in particular from the past administration.

God will bring the gulf and this president through this calamity and punish all those responsible for this evil deed.

I'm sorry but I won't be watching LKL nor will I be donating any money. I would rather donate, as I have for decades, to the St Jude's Childrens' Hospital. They treat children w/ cancer whether their parents can afford it or not. I can't think of anyone who is suffering more than a child w/ cancer. Or anyone who deserves help more.

A question for America are our leaders competent enough to lead us and can America trust our government to do whats best for America ? The news coverage points to no and maybe on both questions .

As I understand it, NASCAR attendance has been down the last few years as a result of the "economic downturn/ recession/more likely- depression." So, here's an idea. Why not have a "commemorative bag o' oil" giveaway from the spewing gusher in the Gulf, to spur ticket sales? Sponsors like Pennzoil, Valvoline, etc., could figure out the marketing angles for the giveaway (might I suggest here that the fan/or fans with the most "bags o' oil" for tickets purchased be given an overnight stay with Tony on his yacht?), and then, maybe even spreading a little of the remaining "commemorative bags o' oil" on strategic sections of the track to enhance the excitement for drivers and NASCAR fans alike. Maybe during the singing of the National Anthem the oil company sponsors could arrange to have the newly oiled track strafed by an A-10 Warthog, rather than the as-per-usual mundane fly-over by F-18's.

What are you looking at? It's better than what BP's been coming up with.

Gov Brewer of AZ is mad because she learned of a possible fed lawsuit challenging their immigration law from a foreign newsclip of Secretary Clinton. Excuse me but didn't she say prior to her meeting w/ the President that "I'll see you in court"? Actually, neither she or the President will be in the courtroom.

She should be more concerned w/ the lawsuits that have already been filed by counties in her state, police depts & others. Once the Justice Dept files a lawsuit, laws dictate that she be notified. She will be served w/ a copy of the complaint. There's nothing in our laws that equire notification prior to that!!!

Hindsight being 20/20, I beleive BP always knew that the only way to stop the leak was with a releive well and all the things they were trying was just a show to stall while they were drilling it. That being said they should have been concentrating more on containing the spill rather then experimenting with technologies they probably knew was never going to work. If they had been honest with us from the begining maybe that would have been the priority (contain the spill).

If the CEO owns a sailboat, what a perfect way to take a short and probably vastly needed break. I'm horrified by what the company he works for, has done to the waters of the world, not just the US. But he is also human and needs to find a way to cope with this disaster too. If he went for a hike in the mountains would that have drawn less attention?

Some in the GOP have tried to distance themselves from Rep Barton's comments despite them voting against raising the liability cap, against canceling $35 billion in oil co tax breaks, against the moratorium, etc. Many have made similar comments that didn't get as much air time.

It's not really surprising that the GOP is backing big oil. They have backed & are still backing the financial giants who caused so much hardship. According to the GOP, big business good, govt bad. They forget that they are part of the govt!!!

CNN is practicing "Sensationalism Journalism" when it comes to the BP oil spill. This morning the aired a story about a BP report that said that the oil spill could reach up to 100,000 barrels a day. Much higher than the original and updated projections from the US gov't and BP. Well CNN, the report said that it could go as high as 100,000 not that it is currently leaking out that much. Anytime you have to estimate projections like that you get lows and highs. I am sure this is only one of many "guestimates" made by different BP employees. I didn't hear John Roberts say anything about the oil that was being siphoned off and would not get into the waters. One other story that John Roberts did this morning was about a fisherman that went back through 3 years of his income tax reports and submitted that he made $107,000 per year. John went on to say that BP offered him $33,000. What John has conveniently failed to mention is that fisherman will not have to spend 40-60 hours per week out fishing. He did not mention the wear and tear on his equipment that he will not experience. The "Law" is about making a person "whole" in a compensation law suit. Should the fisherman get $107,000 from BP for just sitting on his ass and not having to put forth the effort to earn the $107,000? I am sure they are using a formula to take into consideration how much time and effort a fisherman will save by not working. Does CNN mention this? Hell No! That wouldn't be "news worthy" when it figures into the "shock and awe" reporting CNN is practicing. If you want to do it right CNN, be honest. But then again that wouldn't be interesting would it CNN?

We need to hear other news in the media other than simply about the oil leak. There is a lot of other stuff going on. Afghanistan and Iraq are 2 big issues. Where is the investigation into the offers of jobs to Joe Sestak and Mr. Romanoff in Colorado made by the White House? How about the economy? The poor economic recovery? The reaction by Congressman Etheridge to the simple question asked of him by a couple of students? Lots of other stuff to talk about other than the oil leak. It's important, but not the only thing going on.

Every interview I have watched on CNN since this catastrophe occured is intent on trying to get the person interviewed to criticize the federal gov't.

The realistic and more supportive voices like the most recent comments by the Mayor of News Orleans are ignored and seldom interviewed as often in favor of those who are constantly on shows like Anderson Cooper complaining.

Now CNN seems focussed on building criticism of the Independent plan for providing compensation from a fund the president negotiated. I predict in two months your socalled Investigative team will uncover some frausd and be whining that they acted too fast!!

You continue to SHAPE news rather than to REPORT it!!

Why is BP being required to pay claims for those laid off due the decision by this administration to put a moratorium on offshore drilling? This was solely a decision by Mr. Obama. This administration claimed that a moratorium was recommended by a "panel of experts". This experts have come forward and said they did not recommend that. The Obama administration added those words AFTER this panel signed off on their report. Does anyone think the press would have given the Bush administration a free pass if they had done something similar?

Since the explosion & leak, how many Americans have died or been wounded in the wars? How many have lost their lives, homes & livelihoods due to severe weather & flooding? How many Americans are still suffering due to the financial crisis & have lost their homes & ways of life? How many Americans have lost their lives or loved ones due to crime? I'm sorry for those who are suffering due to the spill but millions of Americans are suffering just as much or more than those in the Gulf.

I love the irony of Rahm Emmanuel acting indignant about Tony Hayward (the BP CEO) taking one day off to enjoy a yachting event with his family, while his own boss, Barack Obama, goes to baseball games and has weekly golf outings as well as Wednesday night music parties at the White House.
If Mr. Obama needs down time, why shouldn't the CEO of BP have that same opportunity to rejuvenate? Double standard?

When Obama said tha the US will the troops home in July 2011 during the election campaign it was just political speak for "I'll say anything the voters want to hear if it helps me get elected". Nothing more.

Listening to Luger and Feinstein you'd think there were no Afghans in Afghanistan or none that count anyway. Perhaps success should be defined as the day Americans leave, preferably a week from Thursday.

Stupid politicians will never speak the truth about Afghanistan. The US will never "win" there... or Iraq. It's just a matter of how many young American lives the Government is willing to spend before reality finally slaps us in the face.

There are millions of gallons of oil in the Gulf that is more than sufficient evidence that existing operations pose a threat! The oil co ceo's admitted to Congress that BOP's are not fail safe & they are not equipped to handle any kind of leak. Several of them submitted the same response plan as BP that included saving walruses, sea otters & other creatures that don't live in the Gulf.

Before the Deepwater Horizon blast, these same people claimed that such an incident wouldn't ever happen. Despite similar events in recent history. What would happen if another rig exploded & the oil co didn't have the resources that BP does? Or if they say we are only going to pay the $75 million liability that the law says? What would happen if another rig started leaking while this one is still gushing?

There are some who are fighting the moratorium, raising the liability cap, new regulations, more insurance against such an event, etc. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I for one am tired of corporations placing the almighty dollar ahead before everyone & everything else.

PLease report the rest of the news and give an oil spill update and move on... you have milked this Spill more than long enough.... same thing over and over is BORING... interviewing people who have no clue as to what to do to solve the problem is borderline stupidity on your part..

BP CEO took a day off... is it just possible that as a human being he might have needed some rest in order to think more clearly...you are adding to the craziness not helping.......CNN get back to basics PLEASE
