Obama's key budget guru leaving
(CNN) – Peter Orszag has told President Obama that he plans to leave his position as White House budget director in July, an Obama administration official said Monday evening.
Orszag, 41, has been a key part of Obama's economic team, serving in his role as director of the Office of Management and Budget during the passage of the economic stimulus bill and this year's health care reform legislation.
As budget director, he crafted policy, but also was a prime negotiator with congressional Republicans.
As one of the main negotiators in the final hours before lawmakers passed the economic stimulus package, Orszag tried to bridge differences and was keeper of the ever-changing numbers, often crunching them in his head. Read more
Judge to rule on drilling moratorium
A judge in New Orleans may rule Tuesday on whether to lift the federal government's moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
U.S. District Court Judge Martin Feldman has said he will give his decision between early Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon on whether to issue a preliminary injunction against the six-month ban, which halts all drilling in more than 500 feet of water and prevents new permits from being issued.
Brian Collins, an attorney for the Justice Department, insisted Monday that the suspension is necessary while officials conduct a safety review after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. Read more

McChrystal wants out. This was a quick way for him. Anyone who has made general knows how to play politics along with his wife family to move up. Those calculated moves to get to be a general does not follow these idiotic moves has made. The war is not going well and he wants out.
MeLoN you are just a sick person, because you have no faith you should not bring down others who do! And as a Christian I do not go out and kill for the sake of my God to justify my faith as do these Islamic extremists who believe they will be rewarded for their killings of those who do not follow in their beliefs! As for Islam they have been killing the infidel ever since their prophet Mohamed had commanded all Muslims to do! I was told by a Muslim that the killing of an infidel only was allowed in Mecca but that is still murder no matter where the act is committed but now they have made it a world wide thing and he also told me jihad was only for self defense but they also do jihad throughout the world! I am not an extremist because I believe that Jesus is the only begotten son of God and died for everybody's sins! An extremist acts without any morals and IO have high morals but as for these Islamic extremists they have no morals when they pour acid on girls faces and poison their food for going to school let alone strapping on suicide vests and killing as many people as possible! And I wonder where your moral values stand? I can remember when you had no care for the young girl who was bullied to the point of death and had no sympathy for her let alone thought that the bullies should be punished! I also bet you think that the parents had no role to play in the matter also! Find a rock and hide because society has no room for you!

Congress should know that WE that just lost our unemployment insurance can not pay our rent, electric, gas to get to a job interview ect... I have a BA Communication, CDL-B, EMT-Basic in paramedic class. I have been to every retail hamburger place to get a job. So PLEASE do not tell me I am waiting around for another 10.00 job. Congress and the tea party candidates have no clue. Its show if you our not a CEO, or a bank who cares. Tent Cities and Bread line our around the comer. Throw them all OUT!
New Orleans is asking BP for $75 million to promote tourism. Why? Most Americans have already made their summer vacation plans. Even w/o the oil, there are several reasons not to vacation in NO. Their high crime rate, their corrupt police dept, the heat & humidity during the summer, etc. One of their biggest draws, food, especially seafood, may be tainted by the oil/dispersants or in short supply.
The hurricane season has started as well. No one wants to chance having their costly vacation interrupted by a storm. The casinoes & bars are open but you can find them almost anywhere else in this country & around the world. Many Americans just can't afford a vacation.
One of the biggest drawbacks to a Gulf vacation at this time has to be the media. People go on vacation to get away from it all. That would be hard to do in the Gulf states w/ the media on every beach. Not to mention all the politicians.

chuck...How could you possibly distort what you say by tying in our President with Tony Hayward? This is your way of defending Tony and nothing more. Haward has a global emergency on his hands that has to be taken care of not today, not tomorrow or next week, but yesterday. Is obvious you don't live her and see the true picture, or live in Great Britain to have such radical thought.

I'm glad that a group has found a way to make money from the oil leak, selling bottles of the oil to donors. Especially if the proceeds actually end up w/ fishermen affected by the leak where they are supposed to. However, it's against federal law to send hazardous materials through the US Mail. The USPS sure could use the extra business but they can't knowingly deliver these materials. Why people would want a bottle of oil is besides me. especially if they have children in their home.
Does the picture of Nikki Haley constantly on display behind you mean that you are endorsing her? I am voting in the runoff today and think this would be more appropriate for FOX. A little surprising for CNN. Just asking. There is another candidate in the runoff but she seems to be getting a boat load of free publicity. JUST SAYING!!
A cup of coffee has over 900 "uneported" chemicals and a cigarette has over 400 ""reported"" chemicals. People going free of caffeine notice a difference to the better of those folks I know.
Can someone talk about the one million that lost their unemployment insurance that now can't pay the rent or even have gas to look for a job. We want jobs. Maybe you can report on the bread lines or more tent Cites in a month from now

NO oil company with drilling permits in the gulf...has a plan to stop this well from gushing. It's just the drilling rigs, the wells that are producing are running.
My problem is the fishing industry. this is their live, you just can't just pick up and relocate these people. Construction workers can work anywhere they are drilling or building something. We have ruined the environment.
the court should decide with the president and demand this stop and to have a real plan for worse case.
If Gov's Jindal & Barbour are so worried about the moratorium, why don't they open up their beaches for drilling? That way, if there's any leak, it won't affect the fishing industry or as much wildlife. Also, that would protect big oil's profits, any economic benefits & their large campaign donations from those co's!!!
Making certain our oil rigs are safe and secure is of vital importance. We have witnessed and are fast realizing the extent of damage which can be caused by failure of an oil rig.
So, inspections of other rigs is a good and necessary step. But, after that, does a six month moratorium serve a useful purpose? Actually, one could extend the moratorium for a year or two, or even indefinitely. However, what purpose would it serve?
Opinions were expressed that the moratorium hurts the economy. I feel that oil drilling should be renewed as quickly as possible. I hope that we can place trust in those who plumb the depths for oil. We've taken a big jolt. But do we throw out the baby with the bath water?
And MeLoN when your judgment day comes you'll be reminded about how disrespectful you have been of God's word! May he have mercy on your soul!

If anyone in the military made comments against Gen McChrystal, they would lose rank & pay, if not face a court martial. Why should a General not face the same punishment for criticizing the Commander-in-Chief? especially when this country is embedded in 2 wars.

Gov Barbour of MS stated the other day that the moratorium on new exploratory drilling in deepwater is a worse disaster than the Depwater Horizon leak. Eleven rig workers lost their lives. We won't know how many will die or become sick due to the toxins in the oil & dispersants for years. We will never know the total number of wildlife that died from the oil & dispersants. It will be some time before we know how these will affect the seafood from the Gulf. Many of lost their jobs & livelihhoods due to the leak. Rig workers who become unemployed will be reimbursed through a fund by BP. Please explain Gov Barbour how the moratorium is a bigger disaster!!!

Both the bank lobby and reformists recognize that Lincoln’s effort—known on Capitol Hill as Section 716—is the most serious proposal to rein in Wall Street still on the table for 2010. The bill’s strategy is simple: End taxpayer subsidies for the derivatives market—the crazy casino that brought down AIG, Enron and Long-Term Capital Management.
By forcing banks to move their derivatives dealing into separately capitalized subsidiaries with no access to taxpayer perks, the business would become less profitable, and the global capital markets casino would shrink, putting the broader economy on stable footing.
But since those taxpayer subsidies mean big profits for banks, they also mean big bonuses for bank executives. And so every Wall Street lobbyist in Washington has been targeting Section 716, and they’ve convinced some top-level, bank-friendly officials like Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to defend them.
What about this Christine and do you have anything to report on it before the vote or are you on Wall Street's side and pulling for proposal 716 fail because of you Wall Street money connections?
Well, well shades of General McArthur. McCrystal's interview with Rolling Stone sounds a lot like another military genius protecting his own butt as the chances for the success of his much heralded and wholeheartedly embraced new strategy fades. So we resort to the old military standby, the familiar 'stabbed in the back' by civilians story line.
OMG... let's crucify the General for speaking the truth! That's not what any responsible person does! Let's tell the corrupt politicians and the American public only what they want to hear.
The GOP, along w/ Democratic Sen Landrieu, & oil co's are trying to end the moratorium while they are blocking raising the liabilty cap & ending tax breaks, incentives & subsidies for big oil. The current disaster proves that the oil co's don't have the means to stop a leak. CEO's of big oil admitted there isn't much they can do when a leak happens.
A study by Transocean shows that BOP's on deepwater rigs have a failure rate of 45%! Transocean is also fighting against all efforts to make them responsible for any damages overtheir $27 million liability cap. The same study shows the failure rate in shallow water rigs to be 27%.
The federal govt does not have the expertise or equipment to do much after a spill. Nor do the Gulf states have an emergency response plan for a leak. When all these factors are taken into account, the risks of ending the moratorium outweigh any benefits. Especially when this leak is continuing & we just entered the hurricane season!!!
All meetings that politicians (from both parties) have should be made public if it has an affect on American society. Neither party should be doing business in the dark and should be transparent.

The President didn't sign off on BP"s safety procedures. Although technically, every federal agency & employee is part of "the administration," the people at MMS were hired long ago. Their policies & ways of doing things don't change just because of a change in administrations. Usually, it takes a catastrophe to expose the problems.
It's way past time that Congress makes the minutes of Cheney's & energy officials secret meetings public. How did these meetings change the policies & practices at MMS? The same policies & practices that were in effect at the time of this disaster.
Silly MeLoN most of the world does not want to blow us up , just the Islamic extremists and for your information most of the bombing and killing is being done by radical Muslims, killing each other! Ask Obama to appear on the AM show ... and have him explain why he (and his administration) signed off on the safety procedures on the Deep Water Horizon before the accident which is more important than anything Palin ever said and makes Obama as responsible as Bush to the cause of the oil spill that has killed the Gulf.
Ya' have to wonder why no suits were filed for judges to rule on when the previous administration was busy de-regulating whole industries like energy/oil, insurance, and banking. You really have to wonder why the Supreme Court didn't step in while Cheney was crafting our nation's energy policy with the heads of coal, oil, and gas behind closed doors. I feel it's time to get a prosecutor involved in the events leading up to the broken well in the Gulf. Let have the judge rule on that, too, while he's at it.

I am still chuckling @ the "Budget Director" jumping ship and his helping with the "health care reform" bill. The Democrats have no budget and the only reform was to health care INSURANCE.
And silly Americans wonder why most of the world wants to blow us up – without even getting into the bombing and killing the US is doing.
