McChrystal unlikely to survive article fallout, source says
(CNN) – America's top military commander in Afghanistan is unlikely to survive the fallout from remarks he made about colleagues in a magazine profile to be published Friday, according to a Pentagon source who has ongoing contacts with the general.
Gen. Stanley McChrystal will likely resign Wednesday, the source said. McChrystal's fate is expected to hinge on a meeting scheduled Wednesday with President Obama, who was "angry" after reading the general's remarks in Rolling Stone.
The "magnitude and graveness" of McChrystal's mistake in conducting the interview for the article were "profound," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said McChrystal had "made a significant mistake and exercised poor judgment." Read more
Obama team readies new drilling ban
The fight over a deepwater drilling moratorium will continue Wednesday with the White House vowing to move quickly to issue a new ban on that type of drilling.
A federal judge in New Orleans issued an injunction on the six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling. President Obama pushed for the ban after the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The White House said it would appeal the ban.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar issued a statement Tuesday saying he would issue a new moratorium quickly. Read more

General McChrystal's problem is he thinks the Obama administration is some how afraid of conflict. In April when this was supppose to have taken place, McChrystal was getting almost everything he asked for for the surge. It could cause moral problems but on the other hand the plans for the surge are set and anyone can follow the plan. The real problem facing Obama is the general's staff. Talking to some of the revservist and active military personal I know are glad that the administration is finally going after the people who attacked us on our soil. They feel that they were fighting the wrong war and have experssed the desire to extend or re-up now that we are in the right war.
Look why is the rest of the country so worried about drilling down there when the people who live on the coast want there jobs back and aare telling us that every day, if they want drilling to go on what does that say about the rest of us are we the ones who are wrong or are the people who live and gov. there
While the Gulf oil spill is a complete disaster, which is going to last for years, if not decades, I would like to comment on a couple of things. #1: Yes BP is the responsible party, however, lets not forget there are others involved. Have you heard about them having to pay any monies? BP is paying and has put the 20 billion in the "fund".
I wonder what any other company would have done if this happened to them? Quote the law, drag it out, and stand fast on the $75 million cap? #2: While I agree that those affected and loosing monies should be paid without delay, they should have to provide documentation on their losses. You have some people that have not even paid taxes, for years, that are demanding money. #3: Now you have a judge that says stopping deep well drilling is illegal? I really wonder how much sanity we have left? I would think that 1 disaster like this would be enough. WHY, have those oil workers affected not filed claims against BP for lost wages? #4: WHY is it that none of the other oil companies have come to the aid of BP? Is it because they know there is no technology to prevent things like this from happening? OR, is it that they hope BP will go bankrupt so they will make more money? Do you really think that BP is the only ones taking shortcuts, etc, in order to make more money?
Why do you have to be so condescending and insulting about the World Cup? Is it because America doesn't dominate?
If you can't say anything positive, don't say anything. I feel sorry for the American team. They work so hard and are doing great.
Bravo Philip Roth!
It was the oil company's and green energy freak's that lit the fuse to Americas economic disaster in the first place driving up fuel prices and killing off large auto sales destroying auto company's and maintaining wall street bandit's with our elected officials sitting back watching doing nothing to stop it .
I have been listening to the attempted discussion about soccer and specifically the World Cup. There are two men involved in the discussion. It seems the gentleman on the right screen has a great disdain for soccer. His view reflects a common view of many sports writers and newspapers that choose not to cover soccer. I do think the discussion would be much better if he were removed from the show and/or at least any discussion of soccer. It is a great sport and a great American sport (including the United States). Watching the talent and finnesse of the fine soccer players is more interesting than the final 2 minutes of the somewhat "pretended" action (except for the final 2 minutes) of most basketball games. Please ask the gentleman to step down.
Over 700 million people are watching the world cup! How many watch American football? It's not odd that you only use your feet because that's the reason it's called FOOTball! The US is the odd country out as far as thinking the beautiful games is somewhat uninteresting
Wow! It was just proved that no one at CNN has opposable thumbs.
Max Kellerman is igorant.
the reason for the increase in soccer is because Bd's of Education found out it was a cheaper to support soccer, than football.
I like those robot baby's you can unplug them at night before bed .
Jane, you obviously have not listened to the leaders of the GOP who have suggested taxpayers assume some of the financial costs of the disaster. Rep Barton only said BP should be held accountable after he apologized to BP! The GOP has blocked raising the liability cap at least 4 times. They blocked repealing $35 billion in tax breaks for big oil. they are against the moratorium. I would say the evidence of them siding w/ big oil is overwhelming & not talking points as you suggest!!!!
Gen. McChrystal put his foot in his mouth! It is that simple. He broke the written & unwritten rules and for me it appears that HE made a deliberate decision to GET OUT of the situation he is in! HE was "picked" as the one who had the solution to the problems & now I beleive he realizes that his plan will not work! SO, rather than admitting he was wrong, or giving the appearance of "giving up", he makes comments, knowing full well, what will happen. In this way he can retire, write a book or two, and get paid for appearance's!
It is outrageous that Congressman Charlie thinks it's okay to continue to drill and force the American taxpayer to bail out his region. If you move forward with drilling, you are on your own and the rest of us are not liable to clean up your spills. There are thousands of teachers loosing their jobs across America and no-one is setting up a 20 billion dollar fund to save them. Besides, where was the plan from the Republican governors in the affected states to take care of their own people rather than crying to the federal government to save them? Those States get the oil revenue and the rest of us get squat! Let them take care of themselves – you know – State's Rights.
We need to get out of Afghanistan now!!! Gen Petraeus told Congress the other day that the number of Al Qaeda currently in Afghanistan is in double digits, if any at all. A large part of the insurgency there is due to our occupation. Most of the insurgents are soldiers defending their land, not terrorists. This is why there are a limitless number of new recruits.
BTW: President Obama never stated we would be out of Afghanistan by 2011. He said we would start withdrawing troops "beginning" in 2011. We need to end America's longest war, not slowly decrease our troops.
If only W had stayed w/ the mission in Afghanistan instead of getting us involved in Iraq, we would not be at war now. Think of the hundreds of billions that could be used to rebuild America instead of those 2 countries!!!!
La. is not the only place on the Gulf. They caused this disaster. They have not even worked on levy. Then it is about money more than care and safety. So, when your're dead and the Gulf destroyed, what will money do for you then??
This President and Vice President have been disrespected on every hand and some of us will not take this anymore. This is a dangerous attitude this guy has -notice I said guy this time.
We are a democracy not a dictatorship and a military regime!!!!
The judges ruling on the drilling moratorium is correct. This administration lied when it said that a panel of experts recommended the ban. Many of those people on the panel came out and said that this administration added that wording AFTER they signed off on the bill. If President Bush had done something like that, the media and Democrats would be making this a huge deal and point out the lies coming from this White House. What else are they lying about?
Thanks, Pauly. You are 100% right
Where is the discussion about what Barack Obama told Senator Kyl about the border? Did the President actually tell him that he will not work on border security unless it's connected with "comprehensive" immigration reform (code word for amnesty)? Is the President holding up border security in order to use it as a bargaining chip for the comprehensive reform that this President wants? That is a big story if true. Where is the media on this issue?
Desk job too good. Toilet duty with a toothbrush!!!
McChrystal for President. Rolling Stone was probably the wrong place to say it, but the entire Obama Administration is a joke.
We all pray fot that region but, they have put themselves in a dangerous position. So, they rather have uninspected safe rigs out there rather than wait. And, they have no idea what caused this or if it will cause an even greater threat. The levy still not fixed and they still want help but, why should the Government help when they will not listen to reason. They themselves did this too. The State of La. also had part in permits and inspections and security. So, if another situation occurs, the government will help but, they will also slam that State with negligence and stupidity. if a hurricane comes and one is they are really in a fix. NC ain't going there with them.
Pauly,
The GOP has not "chosen sides" with BP and big oil. Republicans have clearly pointed out that BP is at fault for the leak and is responsible financially for making right. It appears you have the Democratic talking points down when it comes to demonzing Republicans and "big business". Could that be because Democrats are in the pockets of "big labor"?
What some people object to is thug techniques that this administration employs when it comes to those "evil" corporations that liberals don't like. They seem to forget that those "evil" corporations provide the jobs that they want.
i just watched the piece about robot babies in Japan. i think they have the wrong idea encouraging people to have babies. the world needs LESS people, not more.
if all the world had only one or two children per couple within a few generations the world would one day be a MUCH better place and could support the human race with the resources we have.
less people is the real solution to the worlds problems, not more people! imagine how wonderful the planet would be with only millions of people instead of billions.
my wife of 27 years and i have one child.
ONE PLANET- ONE CHILD-ONE FUTURE
The truth is Louisiana is stepping on the toes of those pushing for green energy .
The defiance against our president is growing California is resisting illegal employment , Arizona is resisting Washington on illegals , Louisiana is resisting off shore oil orders . And Mc Crystal is resisting the White House this does not lead up to a well organized leadership .
If Obama wants to be respected by the world, he has no choice but to fire McChrystal. No one will take him seriously as leader of the free world if he doesn't.
It's a Kobayashi Maru...a no-win situation.
When the financial giants caused the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the GOP backed them. When the President set out to end the practices by insurance giants that cause hundreds of thousands of Americans to suffer and/or, die, the GOP backed the insurance co's. After BP caused the worst environmental disaster in the history of this great country, the GOP has sides w/ BP & big oil. Do we really want the GOP back in power? We need a govt that is for "we the people," not for corporations!!!
Yes Kiran, if McChrystal leaves his post in Afghanistan it would surely bring down the moral of the troops. We've got a a man that the troops believe in and that will take them to victory in Afghanistan and if we change that lead man in the heat of this battle with the Taliban I doubt that the troops would put in as much an effort as they have with McChrystal in charge! We can't just keep changing the guard because of difference of opinions of certain people in the administration, pentagon or ambassadorship. If we do it make us look arrogant and self absorbed!
Obama never actually planned to be out of Afghanistan or Iraq when he said we would be ... that was just campaign bs to help get elected.
Anybody have any opinions on Leibermann's proposed bill to put the internet under the control of HomeLand Security?
FL panhandle counties are complaining that checks from BP aren't in the mail? These are the same counties that are airing ads & whose leaders frequent the media stating come on down, the oil spill isn't affecting us! That their beaches are open & the fish are biting!
If you ask me, our precious Gulf Coast deserves nothing less then well heads with Blow Out Preventers with Acoustic Switches and (this will really annoy oil men) Pre-dug Relief Wells.
This court ruling is a sham, the Administration shouldn't have anything to fear. Of course, the Obama Administration would be negligent to not do everything in its power to prevent a second disaster like this from happening. By the way, it's not one bad oil rig, it's one bad regulation policy!
if the president fires the general he will have his excuse to not be out when he said he would
General Patton once slapped a soldier for being a coward and all hell broke loose he was a renegade general that didnt much like his marching orders but obeyed them and went on to lead America to a great victory can general Mc Crystal be compared to Patton if so then he cant be replaced .
Let see, it took about 60 days to trash tony hayward and make a man that took the great big step to let the people in the gulf and the rest of this country know that BP will do what the company has to to make this right and as far as this man can see, he has keep to that ststement he made but to listen to the reporting you would think this man is a monster and a real joke but in all truth be told BP and tony hayward has done what has had to be one of the hardest things for a company has to go thru. And if you dont know what that is, its spending billions in the gulf and standing there taking everything being dished out to them as they should and have.......... what cant wait to see is how long will it take the people of the gulf and media to trash this new BP rep and make him out to be a monster also and I BET IT DOES NOT TAKE LONG . I bet he is in the same pace as tony hayward is in no time flat...... we need to learn more common sense and how to keep quiet and let these guys do what needs done. then as time goes on be right there watching to make sure our gulf is cleaned up and the people down there have and are being taken care of as BP has said they would do I feel we need to give them a chance do do the right thing as it looks to me they have been doing.............. Lets look at the big picture and see if BP is doing what it needs to be doing...................
the goverment wants bp to pay for there mess which is understandable but how does stopping drilling which would earn money to pay for it help i wish they would stop the pr and work and solving the problem we know who is to blame both are to blame
Since the disaster in the Gulf, much of the focus has been on the rigs & safety regulations after they begin drilling. We need to change the way that mobile rigs, such as the Deepwater Horizon, pass safety inspections that allow them to operate in international waters. They need to pass safety inspections because they are classified as ships.
Transocean had the Deepwater Horizon flagged & inspected in the Marshall Islands. It wasn't built there nor did it ever operate there. It was just "inspected" there! Ships & rigs are often flagged in other countries that have fewer regulations and/or where "safety inspectors" can be bought and/or manipulated.
if our goverment can print up 700 billion to save the banks, how come the cant print up 700 billion to save the coast
What is the bigger business in the US – the Military or big oil?
Peanuts are a health issue!!! For you to dismiss the issue of peanuts on airplanes with the statement you made is dissappointing to me. Educate yourself.
Lets see. I'm China and I have a bunch of frozen seafood that I need to dump on the US. Who is my biggest competitor? Gulf of Mexico. How can I get rid of the competition? Just sayin......
I think the President is right in regards to the moratorium. No one knows the exact cause of BP's oil rig catching fire and the reason the pipe broke. Those who are saying to drill don't know, and if it should happen again who will they blame then. We need to find the reason before we put more peoples lives on the line. I would rather lose my job than my life.
The judge's ruling against the six month moratorium on deep-well drilling, and the explanation which accompanied it are repugnant. How anyone could see the images from the bottom of the Gulf, along with the effect on its beaches, marshlands, and wildlife, and still rule against the moratorium (knowing full well that the relief wells being drilled may also fail to shut down the spewing oil) has to be in the throes of some kind of anguish. This moment is begging for common sense, and it should now be obvious to everyone on this planet that none is forthcoming from Big Oil and its proponents.
When are we going to learn that we ARE a part of Nature? How can we possibly look our children, or any child in the eye and explain- "We have the best intentions for your future at heart.", as the oil continues to gush forth from the ocean's floor? Do we not understand that, in the end, what we do to Nature we do to ourselves? We're just going to throw the truth out the window with regard to the interdependence of all life by continuing to devastate it? For money?
The ruling speaks to a lack of discernment, and a complete lack of understanding with regard to the bigger picture. I object.
The judges ruling on the moratorium shows why the fund that President Obama got BP to agree to was so important. More than half the federal judges in the Gulf states have ties to the oil industry. This didn't happen by accident. Last year, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals could not hear a case against energy co's because so many recused themselves there weren't enough left!!! The oil industry has spent millions getting the judges they wanted in the courts. Not to mention the politicians they helped get into office!!!
Both the BP catastrophe and the McChrystal debacle further compromise national security. Now Pres. Obama is getting a real dose of being the leader of the free world. The general McChrystal situation seems like a no win for our country at a crucial time in the war on terror/Afghanistan. The oil moratorium needs to be modeled financially to truly define its economic impact short and long term, then an educated compromise must be reached or Obama will lose connection with those he is trying to help / protect.
Are there any of Team USA soccer players from Grande Butte, Montana or Tupelo, Mississppi?
All I can say is, Admiral Allen, you are in charge in the Gulf. Be careful what you say.
Two 4 star flag officers losing their jobs back to back would not be good for our military.
Maybe what Gen McCrystal said was true. As President of the United States and Commander in Chief of our military, I thought you need to have thick skin. We have an economy spinning out of control, 2 wars going on, and a huge disaster in the gulf, we have more important issues to worry about.
Let Obama run the "wars" ... lol ... with all his experience they would be over in a matter of weeks if not DAYS!
Truth is ... those "wars" can't ever be won and the sooner the US learns THAT – the fewer young American lives will be wasted.
To me, the most important question that Obama should ask himself is, would a change in command at this crucial time in the war be a detriment to the troups and to the war itself? Will a sudden change put more of our lives of of American soldiers at risk? His decision should be based on that – and only on that.
In the article, Gen McChrystal referred to himself as "the boss." The POTUS is the Commander-in-Chief & the ultimate boss!!! There are many others in the chain of command between the General & the President. He disrespected many of them. He obviously has little respect for the civilian command structure that has been in place since John Adams.
Ronny, aka Melon, obviously never served in the military. There is a code of conduct that all military personnel must follow. Especially while 2 wars are being fought!!! The COC clearly states that no commissioned officer can speak out against the Commander-in-Chief, the VP or even a Governor of any state. If an enlisted man/woman spoke ill of the General, they would lose rank & pay, if not discharged immediately.
Well we got their opinion about soccer but not a word about our team's chances or names and the places some of our teams players are from nor were their any mentions of the opponents strengths or top offensive player. Looks like we just butted in on one of Kiran and John's coffee break chats.
Seems like I was back at Super Bowl VI setting the Kansas City Chiefs owners box and listeni ng to Lamar Hnt talk about his battle back then in 1972 to bring soccer to America, He was also engaged in setting up World Championship Tennis with only two major sponsors; Mercedes and Rolex...
What is the darn USA's coaches name and what is his soccer background? Good Grief Charlie Brown!
McChrystal should be demoted not fired. That would have a better effect.
I think we found GW's WMDs. They are in the Gulf of Mexico! The Pres wants to defuse them, and some of you think he should not? Amazing!
The best reason to relieve Gen McChrystal of his command is that President Karzai called President Obama in support of the General!!!
The new America?...lol.. Where have you been for the last two hundred years or so? Big money has been making the laws of the US and trumping your rights since the country has been founded.
The moratorium affected 33 of approximately 3900 oil rigs in the Gulf. That's less than 1/100th of the oil rigs!!! All we hear is about the jobs that will be lost. Eleven workers died on the Deepwater Horizon! How many jobs have been lost due to this leak?
The judge erred in his ruling when he said this was an unprecedented event. He like many have conveniently forgotten about the Ixtoc 1 leak in the Gulf & last years off the coast of Australia. Those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat it. We don;t need a repeat of this disaster. Especially while this one is ongoing!!!
Good Morning CNN!
Bad General for speaking the truth.
Hope there is safety procedures in place if drilling is restarted in the Gulf.
They are not asking for a permanent ban. Just want to make sure these rigs are safe. What is wrong with that? You mean to tell me that money & profit is more important than another spill?
how would you feel if there is another spill? No guilt? Who cares b/c you don't live here? Why care about the innocent animals they have killed. They are only living beings that never did you anything.
I think it is sad that logic is trumped by profit. It is why you live in a failing state that everyday is becoming a fascist society. What is even worse than that, is most Americans like you are living in the beginning stages of fascism and do not see it.
Hope you enjoy the new America where big money makes your laws and trumps your rights as an individual.
If he wants to complain, cry, comment or disagree, fine!!! quit first and then write a book about it and tell us all about your thoughts but while you are on the clock and we are paying your salary, be a professional and WORK. If he can't be a man or have the common sense, he should not hold that position of power.
The drilling ban is so wrong for the jobs that the PRESIDENT WILL TAKE AWAY – not the economy – Mr PRESIDENT is soley responsible for taking those jobs away.
This accident is a horror for all of us who work in the industry. We were all very proud of our environmental record in the GOM. Until the time of the Horizone incident, less than .5 of 1% of oil in the world oceans came from drilling or production but that fact has gone out the window for the US Public and most reporters who want to show us all as outlaws. This is not the case at all.
People from all over the US work in the oil fields around the world. We have 18 states represented on my vessel. We all have mortgages, 401k, investments, college funds for our children – we're just regular working guys who have a different schedule of work – between a military and airline pilot family – somewhere in the middle of that.
I make over $125k/year, it is a very good job so...Mr President has lost my confidence if he can't do any better with his knee jerk reactions in a crisis and my vote!!!!
But I do have a question – where is Transocean in all of this? It is THEIR BOP on the ocean floor – it does not belong to BP. Ask Steve Newman that one. BP made a procedural error and they are paying for it – where is Transocean, who by the way, did file for the $75m protection on liability.
Brian
In the wake of a Republican judge who has holdings in oil companies, who overturned the ban on offshore drilling, your important story is what a General said about the President?
Distraction!
Our coast has been destroyed. Corporate & political powers are making sure that we are at risk for another spill before any of these rigs can be checked. How is this not your top story?
I guess the corporate fascism that is strangling our way of life stretches its arms farther than I believed.
Very disappointed that you take away from the REAL ISSUES!
Obama shouldn't fire the General. He should assign him to a desk job at the pentegon that does nothing important. That way he is still in the military out of the spot light and there is some control on the general's mouth.
