Tab for Gulf oil disaster tops $2.3 billion

(CNN) – Costs associated with the Gulf oil disaster have gone up more than $300 million in less than a week, BP said Friday.

"The cost of the response to date amounts to approximately $2.35 billion, including the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, grants to the Gulf states, claims paid and federal costs," a company statement said. BP put the tab at $2 billion on Monday.

The company previously agreed to set aside $20 billion in an escrow account for spill-related costs, a sum that does not cover fees and penalties that could be imposed by the federal government.

"To date, almost 74,000 claims have been filed and more than 39,000 payments have been made, totaling almost $126 million," the company said.

According to BP, approximately 37,000 personnel, more than 4,500 vessels and some 100 aircraft are involved in the response effort. Read more

BP has tried to block the oil w/ drilling mud & junk! These attemptes failed due to the pressure of the escaping oil. Plus these are serious concerns that the casing under the sea floor has been breached.

Pauly... stop acting like Americans aren't hard working people or that they aren't willing to work at any task. Farmers should have mechanized their jobs 20+ years ago like the Government "suggested" instead of counting on cheap illegal labor.

How many Americans are willing to work in the fields under these conditions? Not many, if any:

Proponents of tougher immigration laws have argued that farmers have become used to cheap labor and don't want to raise wages enough to draw in other workers.

Those who have done the job have some words of advice for applicants: First, dress appropriately.

During summer, when the harvest of fruits and vegetables is in full swing in California's Central Valley, temperatures hover in the triple digits. Heat exhaustion is one of the reasons farm labor consistently makes the Bureau of Labor Statistics' top ten list of the nation's most dangerous jobs.

Second, expect long days. Growers have a small window to pick fruit before it is overripe.

And don't count on a big paycheck. Farm workers are excluded from federal overtime provisions, and small farms don't even have to pay the minimum wage. Fifteen states don't require farm labor to be covered by workers compensation laws.

All efforts by BP to date have only included methods that collect oil from the gushing well head. Extracting 10,000 barrels per day from a 60,000 barrel per day leak is unacceptable. The flow of oil needs to be stopped.

Admiral Thad Allen should order BP to bolt down a permanent cap on the oil well to seal off the leak.

As you are celebrating the independance holiday, I hope that you keep us in your mind. Are the nationalities of the voters checked when they vote? You seriously need a reality check as it has already been proven illegal aliens have voted and will continue to vote. Maybe you should join a forums where they speak on this as I know of illegals that have voted and even tell you they have and that they will continue to vote. To think that they don't vote is being totally unrealistic.

Randall, yesterday you suggested I was unsympathetic to legitimate complaints by Arabs against the US, Israel & our other allies. (BTW: all Arabs aren't Muslims & all Musllims aren't Arabs). This isn't true at all. I said there was no justification for the "terrorists"!!!

Only a small % of Arabs/Muslims are terrorists. And of that number, many are just using Islam for justifaction. No matter what complaints they have against the US or anyone else, the killing of innocent civilians can't be justified. They kill more Muslim/Arab civilians than the US kills w/ drone attacks/bombs.

I understand that many of the insurgents fighting our troops aren't terrorists. Rather I have stated many times many of them are just defending their home from occupation. They aren't out to destroy America. In Afghanistan, these people fought the Soviets for 20 years. They have been fighting the US & NATO for 9 years. the majority just want foreigners to leave them alone.

Most Afghans didn't support the Taliban, they feared & despised them.
Al Qaeda is no longer in Afghanistan or just number in the double digits according to Gen Petraeus. The Taliban has been removed from power. We need to end the occupation & focus on those who want to harm the US & our allies.

The terrorist state of Israel is once again bombing Gaza – with AMERICAN made weapons. That is the exact reason why a large portion of the Arabs and the world hates the US and the cause of the growing number of "terrorist" against the US. It has been that way for 90 years or so. Americans allows this to happen. Until the US takes a stand concerning this – nothing with ever change. The US "claims" to be peace makers in the Middle East at the same time they are arming and protecting one side of the conflict. Either arm both sides.. or no sides. Americans seem not to understand this.. and it's a shame. America's "collective guilt" over the treatment of the Jews during WWll should be over by now and their double standards should also be over. America should have one standard for all people. America should be a world leader and standard bearer in truth and justice for ALL people – not just a select few.

The US shouldn't have invaded Iraq OR Afghanistan. We had no business messing with Iraq whatsoever over 9/11 and should have used several well place tactical nukes in Afghanistan – instead of invading it and spending young American lives on a non winnable "war" there. I was anti-Bush BEFORE he scammed his way into office in 2000 and been speaking out against him and his pack of cronies since then but that doesn't make the Dumbocrats any better or less responsible for their actions. How many young American lives needs to be spent before the US realizes that Afghanistan is a lost cause?

Question for Admiral Allen: Precisely why was any attempt to cap the well(i.e., actually stop or at least minimize the flow) halted on June1?
Putting "plug" in the BOP outlet and then forcing drilling mud down may be able to stop the flow at least temporarily until the relief well(s) hit.

My question to Thad Allen is:
Why are you letting bp cut even more corners in "cleaning' up the spill by using corexit in unprecedented amounts. You're a guard of the coast and should step down, along with Lisa Jackson for allowing BP in covering up the truth and reality of the spill by hiding under water.

You all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Stop USING COREXIT! It's killing more fish and mammals than the oil itself
This is ridiculous that in this free country, the regulatory agencies that are designed to protect the citizens, always cide with business and corporations. Corporations get the freedom to kill, main, destroy and pollute, while every day citizens get consequences for virtually every infraction they commit through out the day. Free country? Free for who? The rich of course have bought their freedom at the expense of the poor and every day people.

I'm not certain President Obama is saying he wants the rigs to leave. Perhaps BP is using this as a gambit?

To argue against a deep water drilling moratorium using the example of "we don't stop flying because of one plane crash" is an apples to oranges argument. Jeff, the govt is accepting assistance from foreign countries. From an article in the Washington Post in June: In the past week, the United States submitted its second request to the European Union for any specialized equipment to contain the oil now seeping onto the Gulf of Mexico's marshes and beaches, and it accepted Canada's offer of 9,842 feet of boom. The government is soliciting additional boom and skimmers from nearly two dozen countries and international organizations.

In late May, the administration accepted Mexico's offer of two skimmers and 13,779 feet of boom; a Dutch offer of three sets of Koseq sweeping arms, which attach to the sides of ships and gather oil; and eight skimming systems offered by Norway.

"As we understand what we need and identify domestic and foreign sources, we will act," said State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley, who said the United States has received 21 aid offers from 17 countries and four international groups. "We are maintaining contact with these countries, we are grateful for the offers, and we will take them up on these offers."

There are other, larger factors @ play that caused the unemployment.... ie ... NAFTA (brought to you by Bill Clinton and the Democrats) has cause 10 – 15 million Americans to lose their jobs.

But they have the same ideology that Ronald Reagan did when he said, "unemployment insurance is a vacation for freeloaders." Many have stated similar feelings. They forget what Reagan said about the defict, "the deficit is big enough to take care of itself." Much of the current deficit can be attributed to the 2 wars, the tax breaks for the wealthy & Medicare Part D. It's a shame that the deficit only matters when it comes to helping Americans who are suffering. The deficit doesn't matter to the GOP when it comes to giving bailouts, tax breaks or subsidies to corporate America. Case in point, the GOP recently blocked a bill to repeal $35 billion in tax breaks to the oil giants!!!

With the suicide in Orange Beach, it's just that much more blood on obama's hands for not allowing help from outside the US to get the oil cleaned up. It's a shame that this guy felt there was no other way out. Maybe if obama would spend as much time getting assistance in as he does golfing and going to concerts this man might still be alive & working.

    Randall-

I recall Nader speaking to the derivatives issue prior to the bailout in '08. He mentioned a one-tenth of one-percent tax on all derivatives, which would have created the monies needed for the bailout.

Imagine the potentiality with the numbers you've shared here this morning. Talk about kick-starting an economy.

Please do not imply that anyone is responsible for suicide other than the individual that commits suicide.

How dismissive you two CNN hosts are of those who lost their jobs because of the recession caused by Wall Street! You BOTH are a disgrace!

These millions of Americans did not ask to be unemloyed, these are people who were employed BEFORE wall street almost caused the economy to collapse in 2008. These unemployed people did NOT cause this economic crisis – Subprime mortages did – Wall Street did! and the American peole are suffering for it ! And all these unemployed people are asking of their elected officials – is please look out for us in hard times. Help us get through the hard times!
But all these American get from Republicans – is NO - we don't care if you go homeless, or if you cannot feed yourself, or your children - That's YOUR problem! That is the Republican's response to Americans who may go homeless next month!!!

And you two hosts on CNN – are acting like talking about the fact that Americans may go homeless – is a waste of time, an issue not worth discussing! My wish is that CNN finds you two hosts useless, very soon - let's see how you 2 deal with being unemployed, and not able to find a job!

It is sad that 1,000,000 people will be without unemployment checks, however, we cannot continue to pay for these and other unfortunate circumstances while putting our country deeper into debt, especially in this economical environment.
There is an old saying; invention is the mother of necessity. I suggest we take heed and I cannot think of a better way to solve two problems with one solution: let's encourage some forward thinking individuals/groups to start up companies that will provide our country with a NEW form of energy that does not leak into our precious waters and contaminate our air, while offering many new jobs in a more promising means of safe, reliable, renewable energy.
Let us once and for all, embrace the fact that this IS opportunity knocking; let's open the door!

I saw a map of oil rigs operating in the Gulf on another media outlet yesterday. 3600 of them operating & none of them are affected by the proposed moratorium which only affects 33 exploratory rigs. It's getting pretty crowded in the Gulf. Yet, GOP lawmakers & Dem Sen Landrieu are against any moratorium.

None of them will accept any blame or responsibility if the moratorium continues to be blocked by the court & there's another leak.. I have a question for them. If another exploratory rig explodes or is damaged by a storm, what are you going to do? Especially if the owner of that rig says we are only going tp pay up to the $75 million liability cap. Are you going to expect US taxpayers to pay for your stupidity?

Since all available resources are fighting & cleaning up this leak, who's going to respond if another happens while this one is ongoing? You have all criticized BP & the federal govt' for the response to this leak. Where is your response? With all the revenue your states receive from the oil co's, why don't you have an emergency response system in place?

The more rigs you have operating, the bigger likelihhod of an another accident. A study by Transocean showed the failure rate of BOP's in deepwater is almost 50%. The failure rate in shallow waters is 28%. It's not as if similar incidents never happened before. The Ixtoc 1 leak occured in the Gulf & a rig exploded & leaked last year off Australia's coast. Should have been a wakeup call. It's not a question of if another leak happens but when. I hope you prepare for the next one.

We all remember how in late 2008, staggering losses on risky derivatives nearly brought down our entire financial system.

With 43 members of the House and the Senate hammering out a final version of the financial-reform bill, one of the biggest contentions remains what to do about the mind-boggling, vast, and opaque derivatives market owned by the nation's too-big-to-fail megabanks.

The problem is getting worse. Notional amounts of derivatives held by federally insured banks have risen to more than $200 trillion

It has been more than two years since taxpayers invested $9 trillion to bail out Wall Street. While our economy is still years away from a full recovery, a combination of low interest rates, a dearth of competition, cheap bailout money, and handsome subsidies have meant that the banks that toppled our economy have returned to making record profits

Wall Street has been spending an estimated $1.4 million per day lobbying to weaken rules that would limit the ability to imperil the economy, according to Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard professor charged with oversight of the TARP program. In March, Warren noted that Wall Street had hired 54 lobbying firms, and a 55th to do nothing but coordinate the first 54

If BP somehow wriggles out of it's financial obligations to clean up and restore the Gulf Coast, then someone from the current administration needs to get ahold of Bush/Cheney and the rest of the GOP muckety-mucks and tell 'em to get their checkbooks out for creating the energy policy we've been stuck with. I'll bet that would wipe the smirks off their faces.

And the Democrats aren't "chumps for corporate America"... lol ... Unbelievable that one can be so constantly blind to reality and so bent on laying blame and attempting to make sure the blame isn't placed where it belongs evenly. It's not like Obama or Biden is in the pocket of any corporation *insert eye roll HERE*

What else would you expect the "top brass" to say... after they seen what happened to the General?

    Good Morning CNN!

It's sad that a person committed suicide over the oil spill. Has there been more than one?

BP has already paid $51 million more in damages than the law says they have to. The GOP has blocked all attempts to raise the $75 million liability cap. Many GOP lawmakers have stated that us taxpayers should be picking up a large portion of the costs. Rep Bachmann says BP should say we're not chumps. I have news for her & other GOP lawmakers. Taxpayers are tired of being the chumps for corporate America!!!!
