Forecasters say the storm is expected to make landfall in northeastern Mexico or southern Texas by late Wednesday or early Thursday."]

Hurricane Alex makes way toward Mexico, Texas coasts

(CNN) – Hurricane Alex gained strength early Wednesday as the storm began to take aim on the western Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The Category 1 storm, which became the first June hurricane on the Atlantic side of the United States since 1995, is expected to make landfall in northeastern Mexico or southern Texas by late Wednesday or early Thursday.

The hurricane center's advisory issued at 2 a.m. ET said Alex was moving erratically, but generally westward, at 5 mph. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and was about 255 miles southeast of Brownsville, Texas.

President Barack Obama issued a federal emergency declaration for Texas ahead of the expected arrival of Alex, the White House said Tuesday night.

A hurricane warning was issued for the Gulf Coast from Baffin Bay, Texas, to La Cruz, Mexico. A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions and tropical storm-force winds are expected in the forecast area within 36 hours. Read more | Full coverage | LIVE: Undersea view Video

CNN broadcasting legend Larry King to step down

Larry King, the iconic TV interviewer, will step aside from hosting of his prime time CNN show later this year, he said Tuesday.

King, 76, made the announcement with a short posting to his Twitter account, citing his desire to spend more time with his wife and young children.

"I want to share some personal news with you. 25 years ago, I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of Larry King Live. Now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids' little league games," King wrote.

Sound off: We want to hear from you this morning. Add your comments to the LIVE Blog below and we'll read some of them on the show.

Goodp point regarding slave labor, Pauly. Amazingly enough, I see this in the Founding Fathers vision when I read the Constitution, before the amendments.

What this country needs is the Employee Free Choice Act to become law.

As long as there is a demand for illegal immirants by American co's seeking to avoid taxes, worker's benefits & labor laws, there will be a steady stream of illegal immigrants. This recession did what the border fence, border patrol & other security measures failed to do, slow down illegal immigration to this country. It proves that if there aren't available jobs, they won't come. However, since slavery was abolished, there are those who still seek what amounts to slave labor!!!

Why is it we can spend billions and billions on wars protecting people who could care less about us and send momey to Gaza to build schools and housing but when it comes to helping the millions of Americans out of work it is too much of an expense on the federal budget...I am sure most of us unemployed Americans would rathe seer congress cut some of those expensive military projects and see foreign aid reduced and see our reperentative government really representing us by helping it's own people. We need to put term limits on all these politicians who vote along party lines instead of helping the people who put them there. I am glad they.(congress) wil alll have a nice 4th of July...Happy Birthday America...land of the unemployed and home of the depraved.

CNN is the most comprehensive news venue in the world. I for one appreciate the time, effort and quality reporting that consistently informs me of the days events. CNN morning is always a special time for me and one of the reasons is my "link" to John (JD) Roberts. I remember listening to JD when he was on a local radio station and tv music. lol You had a bigger hairdo then JD. Thanks for continuing to inform and educate the world CNN....Kudo's to all at CNN for the exceptional jobs you all do.

What about American Congressmen saying that Afghanistan has a corrupt government? lol...Takes one to know one doesn't it...the U.S. Government leads all governments in "PORN watched while on the job!"

Like Leno said way back there after Iraq had it's first election and Bush's people harped and harped that it was an open and fair election; Leno said "Now if only America could have one"...

I'd take Alina Cho and start an hour show and Continue to follow stories that disappear unless they are tragic enough to feature daily for days. You never hear any more about the follow up on stories after they are just vaguely reported on.

I'd like more info about those human heads found by inspectors at a Little Rock Airport and tons of others. More about the whooping cough story we heard yesterday. More about California town and the pollution and that town in Louisiana or was it Georgia where all that cancer was ...Alina could open up with the line " Tonight we review and reflec t on these stories because we know "you" care and or concerned people wanting to know more than just a few sentences"...

I'd like to hear from the Coal Mining town and the people there where 29 people were lost...and what about the Hero's of the Week follow up...it isn't a feature show anywhere when a network KEEPs US IInformed on life changing stories on a regular basis,,,

When was the last time any you heard 5 minutes about the flooding in Nashville? ...

Food stamps should be spent on needed food items like; pinto beans, potatoes, froze vegs and fruits, milk etc. Candy should not be allowed with food stamps and I am tired of watching people in line with food stamps taking off in an expensive BMW. Let us take care of the real poor and those in need of health care and get the crooks off the system.

Melon, I worked in construction for several decades. In fact, I owned my own general contracting business until a few years ago!!! Illegal immigrants are usually hired as laborers, not in the skilled trades. And they are usually hired by small co's that are trying to avoid paying taxes & labor laws. Illegals can't get union cards!!!

Go back to the old way. I am 72 and can remember when there were limits on the kinds of food you could buy with food stamps. Cut out chips, soda's, candy . If you walk into a fast food store you can see the kids buying candy, chips, soda and fatting food with stamps. They can't buy toilet paper, washing power etc. However they can get all kinds of fatting foods. This was not the case a few years ago how every now I would bet 40 to 50% of food stamps are not spent on good foods

Once again Pauly you spew non-sense.

Sure Illegal aliens do argriculture jobs but that isn't the only jobs they do. Illegal aliens have infilterated all kinds of jobs. Wages in the construction, meat cutting and factory manufacturing industries (just to mention a couple) are down by at least 50% due to illegals and these were the jobs typically held by Americans. Just the three industries I have stated involves MILLIONS of jobs. The are dozens of Government reports about the affects of the illegals on the employment of Americans yet you refuse to accept anything other than your own slanted personal idea of what is actually happening. To imply that illegal aliens only do farming jobs is downright wrong and nothing more than you spewing your pro illegal alien, anti American propoganda.

As for the farming jobs – the Government recommended 25 years ago that farmers start to mechanize their industry but big farmers rejected that idea on the grounds it was cheaper to use foreign illgeal aliens. I realize that there are some farm jobs that can't be done with machines but a high percentage of the jobs could be. I also realize that farm jobs are hard work for I was raised on a farm but to say that Americans won't work these jobs is just more of you showing your biased attitude towards and your hatred of Americans.

"Unemployment insurance is a vacation for freeloaders."
    Ronald Reagan

Several in the GOP have made similar comments lately. However, I seriously doubt they will go into the July 4th recess w/o passing some sort of unemployment bill. They have blocked other such bills until the final days in the recent pass.

Today in school kids have options. Burgers, Tacos, Pizza, etc. Guess what they buy. In our effort to be nice to the kids we've lost sight of what's best for them. The "old" way wasn't sooo bad. One line with the daily menu. spagetti on Monday, meatloaf on Tuesday, etc. with milk, fruit, and veggies.

The Russian spy thing is sort of humorous to me. Talk about bad timing for the spies who were arrested. Had they been born in the late 40's or early 50's they would have had a much fuller experience as a Russian spy in this country. As they have only been in our country for ten or so years, their experiences had to be rather mundane. I mean, how many times can a spy try to glamorize following the paper trail for Salad Shooter shipments, or creating an elaborate scheme to steal the dimensional drawings or patterns for the Snuggie before cracking under the strain of unfulfilled potential?

They need our empathy right now. 🙂

That video from Chicago reminded me of a prison riot. I got to be in about 15 riots in California Prisons, like San Quentin, and Folsom, back in the 60's, 70's, and half the 80's. It's not about "fighting". It's deeper then that. I saw dozens, if not hundreds killed in these riots, over the years. I was disciplined several times, in 17 years for stabbing other prisoners in tense situations between factions. Chicago is as dangerous as the Yard at San Quentin ever has been. Now that everyone who qualifies can get a GUN? It'll be like walking a patrol in Viet Nam, where I spent two years, before I went to prison.. The rattle of AK-47 fire will echo through the streets. 9mm ammo will be a HUGE seller. The inmates, as at San Quentin, and Folsom will be running the asylum, my thought.....Mike Posey

Immigrants from Mexico, legal or illegal, aren't taking Americans' jobs!!! To prove it, they are inviting any Americans who want to work in the argriculutural fields to take their jobs @takeourjobs.com.

There isn't any overtime for the long days one has to suffer in the heat. Pay is low. Smaller farms don't even have to pay minimum wage. In several states, worker's comp doesn't apply. Forget benefits like health care, vacation & sick days!!! I don't suspect there will be many, if any, Americans taking them up on their offer!!!!

How must the fishermen and all Gulf state residents feel knowing CNN spends the majority of it's weekend programming on subjects like MJ death conspiracy theories and gay men adopting? Not once but over and over and over again...I think even repeating again following weekend? Old gulf footage, old news..From whom, from where comes such odd untimely programming? For every MJ fan there is a brilliant MIT scientist who could be tossing ideas around inspiring more people to regroup and find solution to fix the leak. I won't even go into the disgust I felt to see you all playing the BP patting itself on the back tv ads. I only started watching CNN Back in April praying you would help bring minds together as local Florida news barely mentioned spill... I sat with my jaw dropping, while Frederika Whitfield kept saying "a thousand GALLONS per day is leaking". I even called Riki Ott to ask her how she could just stand by and not question that obviously low number. I pointed out even FOX was reporting 5000 barrels so THAT had to be low! I begged RFKjrs secretary to get his butt on the air and inform us and was so pleased to see him on LK with updated estimate of amount leaking etc...but I'm the crazy one? PLEASE grow some balls and reveal the corruption.

Only in America can the people complain about Americans losing jobs at an alarming rate and on the other hand have an border so porous that is illegally letting in everyone from other countries sucking up all available jobs and having millions of jobs being outsourced to foreign countries. Maybe after millions of Americans are homeless and living on the street will the people wake up. Then again... maybe not. Americans main concern should be their fellow Americans that are struggling to make ends meets before it is too late to help.

You ask if were heading for another recession?
Two million people will lose their benefits buy July 10th that should take an easy five million or so out of the economy each month. After that, benefits will run out at a rate of about 200,000 per week, adding another loss of $600.000 a month to the economy. The recession will worsen, people will not have the money to buy food, shelter or pay their bills. This could lead to more money problems for the states; there will be a flood of people needing food stamps and welfare. Unless Congress acts to stop this, I fear were headed for a Depression. I will see you in the soup lines or in the November Battle Field which ever comes first.
