Hurricane Alex kills at least 1 in Mexico; flooding feared
(CNN) – A contractor in Monterrey died when a wall fell on him as a result of the rain, Carlos Eduardo Aguilar of Nuevo Leon's Civil Protection agency said. CNN-affiliate Televisa reported that at least three other people died when a wall collapsed on them in Acapulco, on the country's Pacific coast.
Alex made landfall along the northeast Mexican coastline late Wednesday as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of about 100 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported. Forecasters downgraded the storm to a Category 1 hurricane early Thursday morning and said it would continue to weaken as it moved inland.
But residents on both sides of the border braced for additional flooding and tornadoes as the storm moved west with 85 mph maximum sustained winds.
Rivers and creeks were already well above their normal levels Wednesday. Rescuers saved a young man from rushing waters, Nuevo Leon state officials said. Officials closed schools across the state Thursday as they braced for floods. Read more

What good is it going to do for the president to send troops to the border when the president is hell bent on ignoring the present immigration law the troops will more then likely wind up hendering the border patrol from enforceing the already exsisting law .
You'll never get it .
Politicians from both parties have their own agenda and mostly that doesn't include/benefit the general public.
@ Randall
Morning. Hey! What's the title of the book, and its author which you mentioned earlier?
I'm reading a pretty good one now which would cure a lot of our ills in this country. It's titled, "The Shadow Effect."
All politicians rely on money from corporate America. There's nothing wrong w/ that. It's when that money sways their vote one way or another that a problem begins. lawmakers should vote for the best interests of their constituents, not their political donors!!!
Which party has blocked raising the liability cap on big oil? Which party has blocked repealing $35 billion in tax breaks for big oil? That money could be used to extend unemployment benefits for Americans!!! Which party is against the moratorium?
Which party fought against HCR & succeeded in watering the bill down? Which party has been fighting financial reform & has succeeded in watering it down? Which party votes w/ corporations & then against the unemployed & homeless Vets?
Everything Israel does is secret! Like did you know we used Israel to get around regime blockades and sanctions especially during Regan's time.
Israel also assists America by itself arming some of the world’s most bloody dictatorships – dictatorships which even America has sometimes felt too embarrassed to equip herself. These include regimes known to harbour ex-Nazis in South America and, in the case of South Africa, a regime whose ruling Nationalist Party was openly pro-Nazi during the Second World War.
On America’s behalf, Israel also evaded the trade boycott of the illegal white racist regime in Rhodesia before its fall. The American paper, the Boston Globe, reported in May 1982: “American-made helicopters and spare parts went from Israel to Rhodesia despite a trade embargo during the bitter war against the guerrillas, the Commerce Department has disclosed.”
Israel’s relations with the cut-throat regimes of Central America make grim reading too. Shortly after the Lebanon invasion, Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon visited Honduras, a stronghold in the US campaign of subversion against the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. Israeli radio reported that Israel had helped Honduras acquire what is regarded as the strongest air force in Central America and noted that “the Sharon trip raised the question of whether Israel might act as an American proxy in Honduras.”
Israel has also given military aid to the military juntas of Pinochet in Chile and Galtieri in Argentina (before his downfall). The aid to Argentina is particularly shocking, not only because Argentina harbours ex-Nazis but because the Galtieri regime was itself notoriously anti-semitic. The Israeli journal Haolam Haze exposed this obscenity, commenting: “The Israeli Foreign Minister last week extended a warm handshake to the Generals in Buenos Aires who had murdered about 1,000 Jews in Argentina.” The journal also interviewed the Argentinian Jewish journalist Jacob Timerman, who told them: “I saw with my own eyes how Argentinian jailers tortured Jews in prison while the Israeli government requested the Jewish community there to remain silent.”
America for Americans.
The US troops should be brought home from Iraq and Afghanistan and stationed on the border protecting American lives.
Congress, the Presiident & most federal employees have a public option. Much like the one that many Dems fought for!!! Unfortunately, the GOP & a few Dems succeeded in depriving Americans of that! The insurance co's would be out of the health care business if a universal plan was instituted.
Many Dems wanted universal coverage. Again, the GOP & a few Dems rose to argue for the insurance giants & their right to gouge Americans!!! Despite those same lawmakers, insurance co's will have to cover pre-existing conditions, won't be able to cancel a policy just because an insured gets sick & end other bad practices that they have enjoyed.
The VA check is for disability. Sen McCain has earned a very nice living for a very long time. There are Vets who can't work at all & have to fight for years for any compensation, let alone 100% disability. I'm not really arguing his disability or whether or not he's entitled to it. the point I was making is that he's receiving 3 checks from the taxpayer, despite him being quite wealthy. Rep Boehner, don't call me Boner, asked the other day, "if you're rich, why are we sending you money.? He should have directed the question to Sen McCain instead of other retirees!
Lost during the media's obsession w/ other stories was the fact that the GOP blocked a bill for homeless Vets & their children. In fact, if you look at Sen McCain's voting record, he has a long history of voting against benefits for deserving Vets. He has his so why should he care about us?
This health care insurance "bill" will be paid for on the backs of SOME Americans... while others will pay nothing. Corrupt.
@ art...
Should bank robbery be legal, as long as the robbers wear name tags?
Such an absurd concept is at the core of the proposal by Democratic congressional leaders to "restrain" the ability of corporations to steal America's elections. Corporate giants – from Wall Street to Walmart – were unleashed to pull off such robberies by the Supreme Court in an absurd January decree that corporations are "persons" with free-speech rights and, therefore, are entitled to spend unlimited sums of money from their massive corporate treasuries to run their own campaigns to defeat or elect anyone they want.
This is the nuclear bomb of politics, empowering corporations to drop megatons of money on candidates, literally letting this narrow special interest buy our government.
There is another way – Democrats should get out of Washington, where corporate money already rules, and go to the people, rally grassroots America to ram meaningful reform down the throats of these thieves.
If every American is forced to buy insurance and every American will get the same level of care then every American should pay the same. This includes all politicians. With ObamaCare the politicians are exempt from what they are attempting to force on the general public. A system where some get gouged and some don't have to pay anything is corrupt.
Change the tax system to a flat tax where every one pays the same PERCENTAGE of what they earn regardless of how much they make. Take away all tax credits, refunds, earned income. That way the "rich" will pay more but it will be fair.
Get the insurance companies out of the health care business altogether.
So if a Vet is rich... they aren't entitled to what they previously earned? Why would people be interested in serving their country if they could lose what they earned because they the get to a better spot in their lives later on?
MeLoN said- "All you have to do is change Big Oil to Insurance Companies and it all fits."
C'mon, MeL....The word is- Corporations. You didn't take your insight far enough.
Are you aware that the Republican majority on the Supreme Court recently gave corporations the same rights as individuals with regard to election campaign contributions? I cannot for the life of me imagine a Democratic majority on the Supreme Court traversing this path.
Isnt it against the law for Gov. Richardson to issue drivers license to illegal citizens and if so why is he getting away with it .
As I told you befgore Melon, the insurance co's were greatly helped by the GOP's opposition to HCR. many Dems wanted universal health care or at least a public option. the GOP succeeded in watering down the bill & protecting the insurance giants.
And again, the mandatory provision in the HCR bill was first proposed by Bob Dole & the GOP as an alternative to Hillary Clinton's proposed HCR bill. In fact, this package is very similar to the one the GOP supported before they were against it.
Whether you agree or disagree w/ mandatory insurance, it's a necessary evil. Why should I or anyone else have to pay for your health care because you want to gamble on not getting sick or injured? Why should I or anyone else pay more when costs of treating the uninsured are passed onto those who have insurance?
And as far as giving the insurance giants more business & more subsidies, the GOP took very good care of them w/ Medicare Part D. The costs of that bill are now approaching $1 trllion!!! What was supposed to help seniors & the disabled has helped the insurance giants much more!!! And has added to the deficit!!! Unlike this health care bill that will be paid for!!!
Any employer that hires illegal aliens is aiding and abetting the enemies of America and should be dealt with as such.
The Democrats are as responsible for the "wars" as the Republicans are. All politicians that were in office at the time of the vote are resposible.
The US never should have been in either of those countries.
America's first concern should be America and Americans. Fix what is wrong in THIS country and quit helping/ forcing Americanizing upon other countries.
MeloN there will be a book out around the 1st of November that will give you and Pauly a place to both agree and to find common ground that you both can embrace because it will allow the constitution and the people an opportunity to have unison in shaping the laws of our land.
Finally the 21st century will get a 21st century style of representation and this political party corrupted 18th century style law making will be stopped!
Parts of Texas welcomes Alex the ground is so dry in places we have fishers this place is turning into a desert I only had to mow my lawn once last month .
The govt never supported me!!! If I had to rely on our govt, I would be in the same boat as millions of Americans & sinking fast. Since I have lived & survived these economic downturns for many decades, I was more than prepared for this one. It's a shame that more Americans didn't listen to their parents & grandparents when they told them to save for a rainly day.
Many complain about the tax rate in this country. I have paid higher rates over the decades. The top rate in this country used to be 87%. It's now 31%. Maybe we should listen to the GOP & lower it even further. Forget that the last tax cuts have added so much to the deficit.
Speaking of handouts, are you aware that Sen John McCain makes around $170,000.00 a year while collecting around $54,000.00 a year from the VA & another $24,000.00 a year from Social Security? With him & his wife being worth about $100 million, he should quit gouging the taxpayer & start spending some of his own monies!!! No, it's better to complain about those who have lost their jobs & homes or are about to. People who supported themselves & paid taxes most of their lives only to be deserted by the GOP now!!!
@ MeLoN
Why do you have issues with a government making the choice to provide some semblance of a social safety net in response to the economic meltdown? The debt will never get paid down without a tax base, and it's going to take longer to get the economy up and growing than the neglect and poor choices took to bring it down. I can promise you this. War is not the answer to our economic woes.
Maybe you should stop attempting spew that only the Republicants are "friends" of Corporate America. All politicians are alike. Different wings of the same bird. What the country needs is a new line of thinking from all elected politicians.
Obama has already shown that he is exactly the same with his health care insurance "reform" forcing all Americans to buy health care insurance. Doesn't that increase the insurance companies business and bottom line? How many tax breaks do the insurance industry get? Has not that increased since Obama became President? How much of a kickback is Obama getting for forcing all Americans to buy insurance from the same companies that had a hand in causing the problem? How is that any different from what you claim the Republicans are doing? It's not a bit different.
Whatever you spew about the Republicans can be said about the Democrats. All you have to do is change Big Oil to Insurance Companies and it all fits.
Whenever there's a suggestion to cut defense spending, the GOP throws a hissy fit. The Pentagon has a budget of $700 billion a year!!! That's a bank bailout each & every year. We spend more on defense than the rest of industrialized nations COMBINED!!! Robert Gates has suggested cutting $100 billion & those on the right say he & this administration is weakening our national defense.
Wrong, there's more waste in defense spending than anywhere else in the govt. Look at how Congress fought to keep the F-22 program alive. they didn't care that the F-22 was a bust & cost hundreds of billions of dollars. They were concerned w/ the money the program brought to their states. Providers of parts for the F-22 were scattered throughout the country. So who cares if the jets are never used, as long as money from it comes to our states/districts!!!
Wouldn't it be great if the hundreds of billions being spent to rebuild Iraq & Afghanistan were instead used to rebuild America? The GOP wants to continue the wars indefinitely. Sen McCain said during his campaign that we need to be in Iraq for the next 100 years. The GOP screamed bloody murder when the President said we would "begin" withdrawing troops from Afghanistan in July '11! Even if you supported going to these wars, you can't possibly support carrying them on indefinitely. Unless you're a Republican!
There are two ways of spelling Dope...Barton..Boehner.
Pauly's motto: Let the Government support me from cradle to grave! Gimme more handouts and pass the costs on to my grandkids grandkids! I don't care!
Your constant garbage spewing and your open border policy only shows that you really do hate America. Instead of actually trying/wanting to improve things for the country your main focus is to attempt to muddy the water and lay blame.
Sorry to inform you but Obama and his pack of cronies are as corrupt as Bush and his pack of cronies were.
I read yesterday that Republican House Minority Leader,John Boehner, wants to raise the social security retirement age. I guess the GOP won't be happy until Americans are carried out of the workplace in a body bag.
If the GOP & Conservadems were really determied to slash the national debt & deficit, they should stop the socialist giveaway known as corporate welfare!!! Corporate welfare in this country dwarfs social welfare. Why do giant corporations that make ridiculous profits, even during the biggest recession since the Great Depression, need tax breaks, incentives & subsidies?
Why do oil giants need $35 billion in tax breaks to take our natural resources & then sell them to us at unbelieveable profit? Why are co's receiving subsidies after they have relocated to other countries or outsourced the majority of their jobs overseas? Why are co's like Halliburton allowed to receive billions in govt contracts & then move to Dubai to avoid taxes? Why are co's that have committed fraud against the govt allowed further contracts?
.. and the Dumbocrats don't have any failed policies.... lol.... Every one of the Dumbocrat policies have increased the deficit and tax burdens on all Americans for generations to come.
Republicans blame everything on the govt. Funny, they are the govt! It's better to blame the govt, which only provides their pay & expenses, rather than blame corporate America, which provides them millions of dollars.
Since the GOP lost power in '06, they have brought the govt to almost a complete halt. Never before has the filibuster been used in the way it has been for the last 4 years & especially the last 2 years. There are actually Americans that think the Constitution says it takes 60 votes to pass a bill. It only takes a simple majority. However, it takes 60 votes to get by a filibuster & actually to a vote on a bill.
The GOP is & has been filibustering almost everything ther last 2 years. Not only bills but important nominations to critical agencies & federal judgeships. The filibuster was never meant to be used in such a manner. The GOP has forgotten that in a democracy, the majority rules. They have successfully used the filibuster to not only block bills or appointees but to keep them from even getting a vote!!!!
If the GOP doesn't want to be part of the govt, they should go home!!! They have done nothing to help Americans. They keep saying they have a plan but never produce details. Their alternative budget was void of numbers. Many ran away from it when it was disclosed that Rep Ryan, the author, was calling for Medicare to be abolished!!! Maybe it's better for all that they don't have a plan. We are still trying to recover from their failed policies!!!
lol @ Pauly.... Forgot to take your meds already this morning?
The evil Republicans are at it again and the "heaven" sent Democrats are being victimized again... lol.. don't you ever get tired of spewing your biased off-the-wall garbage?
How much will America suffer if Obama and the Dumbocrats are left to run wild unchecked? The country can't afford much more their socialist give away programs. All Obama is interested in is to see how big he can increase the deficit. As if Obama wants "economic recovery" for America. Anybody that believes one can spend their way out of debt has serious mental health issues. With all the uncontrolled spending going on – people will suffer at some point for it but apparently you aren't concerned with that as long as you can pass the debt to future generations. The Republicants may not have all the answers but neither do the Dumbocrats.
Just a big 1050 CHUM throwback and Happy Birthday to Canada,, JD Roberts, when AM was still cool. Was that in my lifetime?
I am turning off CNN by July 12th over two million family have lost thier unemployment insurance. Where at least half can not pay thier rent in July so they will be kick out pf their apartments and what kind of reporting CNN doing on the subject NOME. Good bye CNN
While the media has been fixated on the oil spill & Alex, the GOP has continued in their attempt to sabotage the economic recovery. They filibustered the jobs bill & yesterday blocked the unemployment bill for the 4th time. They say they want to reduce the deficit but recently blocked a bill to end $35 billion in tax breaks for big oil!
It's never been clearer that the GOP is willing to do anything to stop President Obama from succeeding. Since almost immediately after the '08 election, Limbaugh & the GOP said they wanted Obama to fail. The problem w/ this "strategy" is that it causes millions of Americans to suffer needlessly. It doesn't matter to them. They are gambling that the President will be blamed & they will regain power. God help us all if that happens.
At this late date – are any of us surprised by the report on AC360 that BP's main concern is profit before anything else?
Accusing someone of a crime after 3 years makes it almost unbelievable. Wanting money for your story only makes it more unbelievable.
Good Morning CNN!
May the people in South Texas be safe from Alex.
