People in Northeast seek to beat triple-digit heat

(CNN) – An excessive heat watch will remain in effect through Thursday afternoon in parts of the Northeast.

The heat has claimed at least two lives - an elderly woman in Pennsylvania and a Maryland resident found inside a home with a temperature higher than 90 degrees.

For a second consecutive day Wednesday, temperatures approached or surpassed the 100-degree mark in many states.

And while temperatures may be lower on Thursday, the dew point temperatures will be higher Thursday, the National Weather Service said. That combination means heat indices will be close to 100 degrees again on Thursday.

As a result, an "excessive heat watch" will remain in effect through Thursday afternoon in parts of Delaware, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

A "heat advisory" remains in place for parts of Vermont as well. Heat index values are expected to hover between 100 and 104 degrees Thursday, so the advisory will not be lifted until Thursday evening.

But the weather service projects that a "heat advisory" in place for the New York metro area will lifted by mid-day Thursday. High temperatures are forecast to be about ten degrees cooler than they were Wednesday, as southeasterly winds come in off the Atlantic Ocean. Read more

Melon, you're always stating people don't love this country. However, it is you who called our troops terrorists, constantly criticize Christians, said WV is a backward state, called Chicago a 3rd world country, have something against "legal" Mexican immigrants, insulted 2 Governors for being immigrants, shown disrespect for the President, VP & many others. I love my country but hate that people like yourself are in it!!! It's arrogant & ignorant people like you that people hate, not real Americans!!!!

    Hey CNN,
Montreal, Quebec, Canada just opened several "cooling" stations to help people beat the heat. Public pools are staying open later to try and help.
"Cooler" weather is expected for the weekend.

Melon, there is a dfifference between using the filibuster rule for certain bills & using it on every bill & Presidential appointment. The GOP uses it exclusively. The Constitution only requires a simple majority to pass a bill but now the GOP forces a 60 vote just to get a bill or appointment up for a vote!!! That's the difference. Go look at how sparingly the filibuster was used prior to '06!!!!

Pauly is all about the "blame game" not the "reality game". Actually it is people of this type the does more damage to the country than do either Democrats or Republicans.

Everybody knows that the Democrats have never used the filibuster to serve their own goals. and of course no Democrats voted to go to war in Iraq or Afghanistan – the GOP did that all by themselves. AND... the Democrats aren't keeping the troops in those two wars NOW – the mean ol' Republicans are doing that all by themselves!

Melon, increased spending was necessary due to the recession. Despite what the GOP says, the stimulus was necessary & has helped get us out of the downward spiral. Another point that is overlooked when discussing the deficit is the fact that it now includes the 2 wars, unlike during W's tenure. The tax breaks & Medicare Part D also continue to add to the deficit. These costs, and the costs of the wars, didn't end just because of an administration change!!! And don't forget TARP. Phase 2 of that was passed & scheduled to be released before President Obama entered the White House!!!

Art, I have been for term limits for many years. After all, we limit the President to 2 terms so why not lawmakers? The prblem is that Congress themselves would have to pass term limits. They aren't about to kill the goose that lays their golden eggs!!!

  14. Pauly

Jane, I hate to break it to you but the GOP has used the filibuster to block Congress from doing much of anything since '06. That was the same year that W finally found out he had veto powers. Much of the policies that are responsible for much of the economic damage were passed prior to '06. Like tax cuts for the extremely wealthy, the 2 wars & Medicare Part D!!!

And the GOP wants to extend those samer tax breaks instead of passing an unemployment extension. Where is their concern for the deficit? Why are they so against bringing our troops home? It's time to rebuild America, not other countries!!!

The couple that didn't have airconditioning said they couldn't afford it due to their daughter's college costs. How many Americans have had to pull their children from college or not send them due to this recession? How many people have lost their homes, and their air conditioning, due to losing their jobs? How many people can't worry about airconditioning because they have to worry about feeding their children? How many people are living in the streets w/o a roof over their head or airconditioning?

Here's an idea for elected representation in our country...

Let's give the representatives in the house a new mission. To ensure fair elections in this country. They would have one two year term to serve in this capacity. At the end of the two year term they would have the option to run for a U.S. Senate seat for their state, or return to public life. If they won, they would serve for one six year term- and then return to public life.

Enough coverage of LeBron James. He is nothing more than an over paid athlete. For all the whining about over paid CEOs, why do we hear little from the media about how over paid these athletes are? What we seem to hear is admiration and celebrating of their big contracts. Mr. James plays a game, nothing more, and is paid an outrageous sum to do so.

Yesterday, CNN gave us a story about someone who didn't have an air conditioner. Today, you are telling us that the demand for power due to the heat wave is a concern. Can you imagine if everyone had airconditioning? The power grid wouldn't be able to handle it & many would be w/o air conditioning due to power outages!!!

    Pauly,
Hate to break it to you, but Democrats have been in charge of Congress since January of 2007. Congress makes the laws and spends the money. Anything done, good or bad, about the economy, has gone through that Democratically controlled Congress. It's time that the myth stop that George Bush was responsible for everything bad that has happened. We keep hearing that he and the Republicans in Congress were in charge for 8 years. Not true. The last 2 years of the Bush administration were under control of a Democratic Congress. Did the economy improve or decline under the spending policies and laws made by Democrats?

When the GOP actually puts "country first," instead of corporate America first, I will stop criticizing them & their actions. Your accusations about me towing the party line are like almost everything else you post, untrue!!! I criticize Dems that vote aginst raising big oil's liability cap & against extending unemployment benefits, among other things, as much as I criticize the GOP. The problem is that the GOP is united in their goal & forcing failure on the President & country!!!

Please give me one example of the GOP doing anything constructive about the economy during the last 2 years. In fact, try over the last 4 years. First, they tried to hide the economic damage until after the elections. Then they tried to convince us that the economy tanked because of President Obama's policies. They have blocked or voted against anything & everything to improve the economy. Just saying no doesn't solve any of the many problems this country faces.

One doesn't have to exert much effort with regard to how mean the GOP is. For instance...Why would a GOP presidential campaign set up their campaign headquarters in a law office building which specialized in foreclosures? McCain's campaign did just that here in, Michigan. (They then tried to purge anyone who went through a foreclosure from the voter registry while here. You know, legal stuff)

This little vignette has nothing to do with a party line. It's a story about how disconnected a presidential candidate can be when they're out of touch with the dignity of being human.

Where is the coverage of the controversial recess appointment that this President arrogantly made this week?
Also, where is the coverage of the Dept. of Justice whistleblower who has been testifying about the New Black Panther voter intimidation case? The media usually loves whistleblowers, perhaps not as much as they do when those whistleblowers say something negative about a Republican, though. Since this whistleblower is exposing the politicizing of the Justice Dept. by President Obama, the media seems to be afraid to cover him or the subject.

I wish CNN would give Jack Cafferty a Weekend hour and call it "For Crying Out Loud"! It would certainly draw and bring back many viewers that have migrated to MSNBC.

I just feel that Jack has the ability to simplify the American world and its outright over-stupidty that evolves from our politicians in words that cleanse men's soul where only cursing succeeds. Jack's comments replace my time from where only outright vulgar cursing helps. It is not right for so much wrong to exist in our governments representatives and the citizens are bound so helpless. (There comes a book in November)

I feel Ford trucks, IBM, GE, Johnsn & Johnson, Home Depot, Lowes, Black and Decker and others would make it a very profitable hour of production for the CNN decisionmakers.

When a Congressperson or Senator lose their seat, they don't have to file for unemployment benefits, They have made sure that they are guaranteed a pension. Even if they have been convicted of corruption & are currently in prison!!! And they are guaranteed these pensions, sometimes as much as their salary, for life!!! They make sure the taxpayers take care of them. It's way past time for our representatives to start taking care of the taxpayers, instead of special interests & themselves!!!

Unfortunately, concern that unemployment benefits adding to the deficit is really just a cover for how many politicians feel about unemployment benefits. Many in the GOP have stated recently that unemployment benefits deter people from seeking & gaining employment. This feeling can be traced back to President Reagan, who said, "unemployment insurance is a vacation for freeloaders."

    July 8, 2010 at 7:20 am |
  40. Lynn Smith

The comment by the Cato Institute "expert" is absurd! Is he so totally out of touch with what is going on in mainstream America? Those receiving unemployment benefits these days are not the "traditional" profile of the unemployed as he has studied over the years. The new unemployed are middle to upper class individuals who want to work. Who were the spenders in the past who kept the economy going. Who are now trying to save their homes and feed their families – not live off unemployment benefits – which by the way is impossible to do. Who are frustrated because employers no longer want to consider them for employment because "they've been out of work for more than 18 months!" Who are professionals that will work for half their previous salaries to just find employment.

Congress and your "expert" need to get in the trenches and find out what is really happening to middle America. Can our economy survive the devastating effect of not extending unemployment benefits? Absolutely not! Congress beware – foreclosures will be up and spending will dive. The unemployed "want" to work and contribute to society not be told they are taking advantage of the system. . . or told that they are overqualified for the job . . . or too expense to hire . . . or to old . . . have been out of work too long . . . . . . .

Paying unemployment benefits for millions of American will add to the deficit – there no way that it wouldn't add to the deficit but mark that down as a necessary evil. Pay the benefits or find the unemployed Americans jobs. Paying unemployment benefits is far better than other Government give away programs. Pay the benefits and cut some other junk programs. Rid the Government of the billions of dollars in pork that the politicians give themselves each year.

It was ACORNs policy to register any and everybody they could. That's why they lost the federal funding that they were receiving.
