After seep detected, BP reconsiders collection of oil

(CNN) – Testing continues and scientists are evaluating the results to decide whether to resume collecting oil from BP's ruptured deepwater well, the company said Monday.

BP's statement came hours after Thad Allen, the federal government's oil spill response director, said that testing had revealed a "detected seep a distance from the well." He ordered the company to quickly notify the government if other leaks were found.

"When seeps are detected, you are directed to marshal resources, quickly investigate, and report findings to the government in no more than four hours," Allen said in a letter to BP Chief Managing Director Bob Dudley released late Sunday.

BP's statement Monday did not mention the leak, but said the company was carrying out extensive monitoring activities around the well site. Allen's did not provide further details about where the leak was spotted or how big it is.

Allen said earlier Sunday that testing would determine whether keeping the well capped was the right solution. Pressure testing results in the well have been lower than expected, he said, which means oil could be leaking out from below.

"While we are pleased that no oil is currently being released into the Gulf of Mexico and want to take all appropriate action to keep it that way, it is important that all decisions are driven by the science," he said. "Ultimately, we must ensure no irreversible damage is done which could cause uncontrolled leakage from numerous points on the sea floor." Read more

The Democrats are as racist as the Republicans. One is racist against blacks. One is racist against white. Neither has the best interest of Americans at heart.

You figure out which is which.

Mass deportation of all illegals is the only solution.

48% of the people in this country believe global warming is not the reality. This is up from 31% in 1999.

    That is all.

    Good morning John and Kiran...

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of running into you both at the Jamaica airport on July 15/2010....

Were both Canadians and I'm a CNN news junkie...I watch John and Kiran every day and several other CNN shows...
I recognized John right away and he was very gracious to let us both get a picture with him...
The main reason for this note is to apologise to Kiran...I can't believe I didn't recognize her but with her hair up I'm sorry to say I just didn't recognize her...so this is to say she's a huge half of the reason I watch the morning show...I think they make a great combination in the morning and it's only since getting home we found out that you two are a couple.....Kiran please know that it was not meant to be rude and I'm really sorry I didn't recognize you so I could tell you how much I love the work you do on the show...

The B.O.P. is holding the pressure it has to be a sign of the ocean floor begaining to collaps .

Leaking from the sea floor? Of course it is. Another reflection of the morons working for BP. I think they want us to live in the "Black Sea." I guess the only thing left to do, is take the cap off before they blow the entire pipe and they can never fix it. Did anyone check the integrity of the pipe before they decided to put a cap on it? Great job BP! You should be proud of yourselves! MORONS!

I agree with T.R. just like a cole mine cave you have to have support to hold up the celing which is imposible with an oil caldera we could exspect fishers or maybe even a collaps sometimes in the future .

Typical of so many Americans – even with talking about the oil leak in the Gulf, is to attempt to lay blame at the feet of someone else. America will never move forward until Americans can get past their unfulfilled need to blame others and come together as one people.

The latest and greatest political trend in America – throwing the term racist around in an lame attempt to stir up people's emotions with the sole purpose of sucking up votes in the upcoming fall elections. That is the sole reason the NAACP calls the Tea Party racist – they fear they are going to suffer during the elections. Just who is the racist group? NAACP? Tea Party? From my point of view – they look an awful lot alike.

The GOP's undercurrent of racism that has always been there. In the past few years they have tried to eliminate racism in their party because we, as a people, no longer accept it. Along comes the Tea Party, and in spite of what they proclaim publicly, their goal is to return us to the GOP of yesteryear, and that includes racism!

We, as citizens of the United States have a right to most information concerning our government and its operations, and the media have the right to report this to us. However, matters of national security should never be reported. If the media gives out information that could compromise our security they are guilty of treason because they are giving aid & comfort to the enemy. Period!

Open the valve, place a riser on top of the valve? That doesn't make any sense. Why not place place riser(s) on top of the valve, THEN open the valve? The valve is a control mechanism, it can be opened at discretion, when required.

Did John Roberts just misspoke that the cap might have to be removed? If so, what's wrong with the cap? I thought that their was seafloor seepage, not cap leakage.

People who keep complaining that many of the jobs created by the Administration were temporary census jobs, seem to have forgotten that having a census every ten years is a national law, not Obama's idea.

President Obama said many weeks ago, that fixing the problems in the Gulf will be lengthy and difficult and unknown territory. That is why he wants a moratorium on this kind of drilling. He obtained a $20 billion dollar trust fund from BP. We should say "thank-you" occasionally rather than saying he just doesn't care.

Let me get this straight, did I hear someone say that to "relieve pressure from the well, they need to open the capped well and allow oil to FLOW FREELY into the Gulf"? I can understand releiving pressure, but why can't they allow the oil to flow into tankers via some sort of piping system? I thought that the new valve would allow capture vitually all the oil. This question needs to be answered.

  24. Bob in Houston

BP is running its multi-million dollar PR machine to deflect attention away from its own negligence. They would have to allow oil to flow for another one to three days to prevent another rupture in the well, but are trying to put the blame on the government; the government is trying to prevent another blowout preventer malfunction that would cause another disaster.

No one in the Tea Party is going to plainly admit to the very visual racism in their group, and every Republican leader in Congress is going to dramatically pretend that all Americans including Americans who voted for Obama, are against Obama's policies. I will see all of the above several times on CNN today, and that's as sure as death and taxes.

Why on earth didn't they fit this cap with a partial flow relief valve and a pre-fit fixture for the riser(s)? That way they could allow controlled, measured flow to maintain a safe pressure for the subterranean well components.

Ultra Rapid Depressurization; I am kind of surprised if the oil chamber ceiling is not compromised. Holding back tons then holding back not much. In Texas in the 1930s oil wells ultra rapid drained become sinkholes, if I remember correctly.
