Earl skirts across Outer Banks, flooding coastal areas
Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina (CNN) - A weakened Hurricane Earl brushed North Carolina's Outer Banks overnight, flooding coastal highways and sending residents inland.
"In multiple locations, waves have crashed over the tops of the dunes and are now flooding several portions of the main state highway on both the north and south sides through the Outer Banks. This is all happening south of the area called the Oregon Inlet," CNN's David Mattingly reported from the community of Waves. "The water is six to eight inches deep and seems to be getting deeper by the minute."
Ben McNeely from Charlotte, North Carolina, was riding the storm out in the community of Manteo.
"We're in the middle of the island," McNeely said. "Surf's up, waves are up ... We're fully surrounded by water." Read more
President mulls new measures to spark economy
Washington (CNN) - After a week mostly focused on Iraq and Mideast diplomacy, it's back to the economy for President Barack Obama, who will deliver remarks Friday on the August unemployment numbers.
Then, Obama is scheduled to give two big speeches next week to try and frame his administration's response to the recession, less than two months ahead of a midterm election where Democratic majorities in the House and Senate are on the ropes.
Senior aides confirm the president recently asked his economic team to come up with various proposals he could roll out to show that amid high anxiety across the nation, he's still working hard to jump-start the economy, including more federal spending on infrastructure projects and tax cuts popular with the business community such as a permanent extension of the research and development tax credit. Chicago gang leaders hold press conference
300 people were shot in July in Chicago, 33 died. And Chicago's police chief Jody Weis is trying to do something about it. He brought in gang leaders for a surprise meeting and gave them an ultimatum: stop the killing or they, and their gangs, will be targeted. Some gang leaders and community leaders were less than thrilled and yesterday called a press conference of their own. Saying they can't be held accountable for other's actions.

It's time for the old Roosevelt CCC camps and programs to be revived.Use stimulus monies, build training and production plants with paid unemployed workers.Clear fields, construction of all kinds, paid training centers and jobs related to "graduates", resume farming, art colonies, all using simple skills building markets, serving communities. Why is there no use of imagination, proven methods lead the way. High techs jobs for gifted already-working, already educated in those specialties. Enough lawyers, create job corps for the people, by the people and paid for by our own manufacture.
CNN always report several disasters around the world, but I have only seen a scrolling mention on the flood in Niger, Africa. Why can't be more on it?
Looks like next week, we are (hopefully) going to have a national discussion on the economy and jobs. Sure do hope the 'wedge issues' stay out of this very important conversation. Hopefully, we can get down to specifics. Ali, make sure you are well rested and in prime shape for this debate.
You did a good job mentioning the census jobs during your unemployment, but your graph is misleading – you should never have included census jobs in there to begin with (just like they should never have been included in the numbers from the Dept. of Labor.) The effects of the census should have been noted from the start of the segment.
I "have did" some reading online this morning...:)
It appears BP is attempting to blackmail the Congress by warning our lawmakers about passing legislation that bars the company from attaining new drilling permits, because it would "imperil" their ability to pay for the damages caused by their oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Fascinating, yes? Looks like I'll be writing my senators and congressman this morning...
Check out the article in the Wall Street Journal this titled, "Democratic Salvage Plan- How Nancy Pelosi Might Save Her Majority." Such a crock! I feel a better title would have been, "Bush Tax Cuts- part II." Perhaps the unrecognized author should blow that one out "his(assumption)" whatcha-ma-call-it...? They've had the tax cuts for how long now? Did they create any new jobs when they had them? Plus, interest rates are low, right? More blackmail?
I think what the gentleman from Chicago was trying to say was that the police and the establishment have removed all the leaders of the gangs and so there is no leadership to help stop the violence, no organize way to control or guide the violence. It sounds like there are independent gangs with no overall leadership striking out. He felt it was up to community leaders( former gang members) to set the example and try to give the members another, healthier outlet for their frustrations. Pat
Wow just saw the interview with the former gang leader who now teaches boxing to youth.
I was shocked that he said there arent gangs or leaders of gangs in the community. That they were broken down years ago??? Give me a break!
300 shootings just in July? Im pretty sure its NOT soccer moms and executives. The police should start the shake down hard. Gangs and their leaders dont follow the laws anyhow so get em out.
Chicago use to be a great city to visit. Come on FBI get crackin!
who is this guy, no gangs in Chicago, the cops should crack down ,if the parents of these kids had control of them the police would not have to
Of course the gangs in Chicago aren't responsible for any of the killings in that city because as everybody knows those are upstanding and productive American citizens.
The gang member you have on spewing is a perfect example of the problem. Uneducated and only interested in laying the blame on somebody else instead of taking responsibility for his own actions. Most of the fault for the gangs should be laid at the feet of the parents for raising their kids in the ghetto and it's a cultural problem.
Send in the National Guard and clear out the ghettos.
Typical CNN "reporting".... Trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill about the Arizona Governor's "brain fart". Must be something sinister going on! It's a GOP plot! The sky is falling!
Come on CNN – at least attempt to look like a "news" organization, please... instead of just a Democratic propoganda machine.
Why would Obama sign "emergency relief" for Massachusetts BEFORE the storm even hits but he didn't do the same for any other state? That makes absolutely no sense and smells like Kennedy.
Good Morming CNN.
Glad Earl wasn't a direct hit and there's no reports of mass casualties, yet.
What is Barry Obama planning to spend more money on now? It's almost to scary to even think about. How much more can the American taxpayers afford to spend?
