Tea Party favorites win GOP primaries in Delaware, New York
(CNN) – Tea Party favorites won two primary elections over more mainstream Republicans on Tuesday, demonstrating again the clout of the conservative political movement on the political right.
Now the question is whether the right-wing candidates can also defeat Democratic rivals in November's congressional elections, when the stakes are higher and the full electorate is deciding.
The results in Delaware and New York highlighted the last major day of primary voting before the upcoming election in just under seven weeks.
Voting in seven states and the District of Columbia included embattled veteran U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel's victory in his New York Democratic primary despite allegations of ethics violations, and D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's bid to hold off a major primary challenger.
In addition, former Gov. Robert Ehrlich won the Republican gubernatorial primary in Maryland to set up a rematch against Martin O'Malley, the Democrat who ousted him in 2006.
In Delaware, conservative political commentator Christine O'Donnell easily defeated nine-time U.S. Rep. Mike Castle in the Republican U.S. Senate primary, giving the Tea Party movement another major victory over a candidate backed by the national GOP. Read the full story
Released American hiker arrives in Oman
Tehran, Iran (CNN) – A jubilant American Sarah Shourd reunited with her mother in Muscat, Oman, on Tuesday after Iranian authorities released her from a Tehran prison where she had been held for 14 months.
Shourd arrived in Oman - where her bail was posted - on a 2.5-hour, chartered flight from Tehran. Her bail was posted by Omani sources, a senior Obama administration official said.
"I've been waiting for this moment for a really long time, and I'm extremely grateful to be standing here," she told reporters upon her arrival at the airport. "I want to begin by giving my deepest thanks to the sultan of Oman, Sultan Qaboos."
Shourd thanked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Ali Khamanei, Iran's supreme leader, and "everyone who has been a part of making this moment happen for me and for my family."
Shourd, 32, left behind fellow Americans Shane Bauer, 28, who is her fiance, and their friend, Josh Fattal, 28. Read the full story

It is awfully hard to watch your segment where Ms. Poppy interviews a small-buisness owner signing job-seekers paperwork just to prove that they are searching for work, and then comments that it would be better if the feds would cut back on unemployment benefits extensions. Wow, !! that hurt alot. Yes there are jobs out there, but what self respecting, jobless person wants to work for 7.35 per hour at 20-25 hours a week, with no benefits and no guarentee of advancement ? My last job payed me 30.000.00 last year before they went belly-up this year in March. I barely made it on 30.000.00 and I don't know how to make it on un-employment, but I simply can't imagine how tomake it on minimum wage and wait for things to get better-for the company and trust that they will take care of me. So yes, i'm doing better on un-employment. could you live off 7.35 per hour ?
Average American, Really doesn't shock me at all.Politics in DC as usual.

Even though the Quran wasn't burnt on 9/11, and I as a Christian am glad it wasn't, with all of the world reaction, it makes me wonder what the Muslim world "truly" worships, God, or a book with some print. Yes, the bible is the inspired word of God; however, if someone was to burn it (which people have), we can print more.
I worship the almighty, not paper.
Any Muslims want to comment on this?
@gary
you don't go deep enough. Ask why there was a need for the bail out?
Gov intervention in the markets, not everyone needs to own a home.
poor management by companies and labor should not be rewarded.
risk can not be eliminated or managed by the feds
Democrats always have their hand out... wanting something for nothing of the backs of those that have worked to get what they want/need. Nothing else could be more unAmerican.
What I meant to say in my last post was "Way to go New York put another Crook back in DC. You bunch of idiots!!!
@Cragzop
America supports Israel and Israel has more human rights violations than almost any other country on the planet. It's not just MUSLIM countries.
America should wake up .. to the evils that the America Government has done to the world at large. The US Government has a very long history of supporting foriegn governments that kill and torture their own people just to stay in power – until the people of those countries final realize that they- the PEOPLE- have the real power in any country.
@Pauly wtf are you talking about?
Go ahead Pauly.. tell us how the Democrats don't want to increase taxes for every American just so they can increase the give away programs that won't benefit MOST Americans ....lol... and tell us how the Republicans are the only party damaging the country with their failed policies... or tell us how well the "bail-out" is working ... lol... It's that thinking that has led us to where we are now.
@Gary .. GM should have been allowed to die off that's the natural course of business. Could that be any worse than the Democratic program called NAFTA that has costs way more jobs to America?
RE: Sales of weapons to Saudi Arabia
Didn't the Saudi government poll the medical establishment to see if a surgeon could sever a man's spinal cord as a punishment for his paralyzing another man? This is an American allie. Not a "radical" Islamic state. No wonder the American people are fed up with Islam as a whole. We read about decapitations, stonings of teenagers who had the audacity to fall in love.
Wake up America! These are not just Muslim fundies. This is pervasive throughout the religion. Even are so called allies have committed crimes against humanity in the name of religion.
Average American,
As to your comment about the increase in debt, would you have let the US auto makers fold? Would you have let many in the banking industry shut down? the US economy is built on three major foundations. You just wanted to let 2 of those 3 collapse. We may be in a recession now, but if the auto industry and the banking industry had not have been supported, we would be in a recession that would take decades to climb out of. The "Survival of the fittest" mentality may work well in nature on a one on one basis, but when some many people's jobs and lifestyles are effected by the Auto industry and banking industry you have to take your blinders off and look at the big picture.
Rob Marciano mentioned that the weather community had not seen in a while such an easterly track for a large hurricane. Could the remnants of the Gulf oil spill be affecting the tracks of such storms?
Isn't the President in charge of the country and controlls what happens?
Can anyone tell me exactly what the President does or has the ability to do?
Average American,
I know the attackers of 9-11 came from Saudi Arabia, but they did not have the backing of their government. We are not the only country selling arms in the world today. If we don't Russia or China or even countries like Germany and South Africa will. Has Saudi Arabia EVER used any US weapons sold to them on any US troops? Never! The 60 Billion will add revenue to the country along with the continuation of work for hundreds of thousands of American workers. The flames of anti-Muslim sentiment is being fanned by the Republican party. The Republicans believe if they continue to throw out erroneous and half truths that eventually some Americans will believe it. A recent survey indicated that 31% of the Republicans believe Obama is a Moslem. Stop believing the crap being spread by Beck, O'Reilly and Fox. Try to think for yourself for once.
I would tell people how to fix the debt but who cares about what i have to say right?
I am so tired of Christine O'Donnell saying "the establishment"... very boring...and she should own up to what statements she makes instead of making excuses... "Hey Christine O'Donnell, Stop saying 'the establishment" ...it's boring and noone cares...
I just watched Rep Mike Pence of Indiana on American Morning this morning. He is living in denial. He said that the Democratic party is in trouble when in fact the Republican party is the one being divided. The win in Delaware by the Tea Bagger is a fine example of the division. A representative of the GOP stated that they would not fund her campaign in November. When do you hear the Democratic party not supporting/funding the lone Democrat in any campaign. The tea Baggers are going to end up driving the moderate Republicans or "RINOs" over to some of the more conservative Democrats. They are already behind in the total number of voters and now they intend in driving some off? I am quite sure any Democrat running will gladly accept their vote. Hurrah for the Tea Baggers.
@Average American, aka Melon & Ronny: Please explain how President Obama and/or the Dems have tripled the national debt. When W left office, it was at $11.4 trillion. It is currently at $13.4 trillion. W's unpaid policies like the wars, Medicare Part D, tax cuts for the wealthy, etc are still adding to this amount! Your moniker changes but your hyperbole stays the same!
Average American, I wonder about the sanity/mentality of ALL those in congress, whether it be Republican, Democrat, Independent, etc. To me, they are all corrupted.
When is the last time they did anything for THE PEOPLE? Isn't that what they were elected to do, to take care of their constinuents? They arre all to corrupt/greedy to do that.
Another mind boggler.....
With the amount of anti-Muslim sentiment invading the US now... Obama and his gang of cronies think that selling 75 BILLION dollars of weapons to a strictly Muslim country will somehow help them in the mid-term elections come November.
Democrats appear to be a bigger threat to the US than do Muslim extremists.
It is mind boggling I tell you.
Democrats complain about how much debt Bush ran up while at the same time they have TRIPLED the amount that Bush spent and they want to INCREASE that.
Mind boggling. Makes one wonder about the sanity of the Democratic Party.
Democrats have only a tax and spend mentality. Democrats have tripled the national debt and want to increase that. I can not fathom how anybody thinks they can spend their way out of debt without controlling spending and cutting wasteful spending. Democrats that want to do away with the Bush tax cuts want to raise taxes for everybody so that they can pay for more give away programs that only benefit a select few Americans.
Republicans spend, Democrats tax. It is a never-ending vicious cycle. Go independents.
I'm just so angry. Why do your hosts let republicans get away with talking about spending, when they spent so much when they ran the congress. And, what are they going to cut?
republican "party" vs. Democrats = different shade of grey
@ hiker.... I am glad to see that she is home and ok....but I have one word for how it went down in Iran....extortion
Does Christine O'Donnell represent all Tea Party Groups? If so, how is that possibel when the Tea Party is not a collective group? All Tea groups have their own ideas and I am tired of it. Yes, I am a member of the Tea Party and I do believe in the Patriotic Oath. Yes, this would be a big step for the Tea Party but we have to stand "together" in order to advance in Government.
I agree with Average American. Here we are, as a nation, complaining about our politicians. Last night, some of us (only a few primary elections were held) one of the New York districts had a chance to deliver that promise.
So, what did they do? They voted a corrupted crook (Rangel) back as their Democratic nominee.
Not to smart New York. You reap what you sow.
This is good news. The less credible the GOP becomes, the better.
Are all Tea Party candidates Republican? I thought that this movement was independent. And why wouldn't the National Republican party want to support a Tea Party republican winner? I'm new to this.
I can't figure out what shows the Democratic party the best ... Democratic voters supporting the corrupt Congressman Rangle and giving him a chance to return to Congress.... or Democratic voters rejecting school reform by defeating Mayor Adrian Fenty in Washington,D.C.
Isn't the world tired of hearing about the "hiker" that was released from Iran – at least until the truth is told? I am still waiting for a reasonable explanation as to why she and the other "hikers" were "vacationing" in a war zone. This story is the perfect example of what the US Government thinks of it's citizens.... tell them anything and they'll believe it.
