Delaware Senate candidates set the stage for November

(CNN) – Delaware voters were treated to a markedly different tone Thursday night as they watched their two Senate candidates together for the first time since the primaries.

During a candidate's forum, Republican Christine O'Donnell and Democrat Chris Coons displayed little of the animosity that came to define O'Donnell's bitter primary battle with Rep. Mike Castle.

Rather, the night was marked by polite discourse and even agreement as the two candidates sought to lay out their position on many key issues.

Their messages did diverge, however, as the two sought to define their political narratives. FULL STORY

BP completes relief well in Gulf of Mexico

(CNN) – BP has completed work on a relief well that will allow the oil giant to permanently seal the well at the heart of the Gulf oil disaster, the government's commander in charge of overseeing response to the spill said.

"Through a combination of sensors embedded in the drilling equipment and sophisticated instrumentation ... BP engineers and the federal science team have concluded that the Development Driller III relief well has intersected the Macondo well," said Thad Allen, the appointed national incident commander, in a statement released late Thursday.

The relief well was started about 100 feet from the original well and intersects with it about 18,000 feet under the surface of the Gulf. FULL STORY

Crews clean up damage from fatal NYC storm

(CNN) – Crews in New York worked early Friday to clean up damage left behind by a fast-moving storm that killed one person when it ripped through the city.

"There have been reports of damage to school buildings. We do expect all schools to be open tomorrow, but we'll just, as the night goes on, we'll make sure that everything is safe," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said late Thursday.

The storm's strong winds and torrential rains toppled trees and left more than 20,000 customers without power Thursday. FULL STORY

What do u all think of Politics and what is going on? CNN needs to take a "live poll" to show on TV this ?. "Do you think there should be a "Cap" on Canadits spending". Example: Take $200,00 to spend and when it is gone, it is gone. So, they need to come up wityh ideas on their own of how to get elected with what they have. (Like normal people who live on a "Budget") "All" politicians spend, spend, spend and then they talk about the Dem. "Spending". "They "ALL" spend to get elected and then do the same ole thing once they get to Washington. The "Tea Party" will be "NO" different. If "ALL" politicians were sooooo concerned with the economy, then let 1 person put their $ where their mouth is, step up to the plate and do just that. "Suggest" a cap and ask "All" running to do that and see who gets elected. Let them "run" on a budget. They spend millions to get elected to an office that does NOT pay back millions.r If the people and big business behind the Rep. and Dem. who are running would put their $ "Back into the economy" there would be "NO" deficit. Politics is just about making $ for the party and the people running. As far as the Bush tax cuts: Simple: Have a range like: >250,00 to 400,00 pay a certain %: $401,00 to 550,00 pay a higher % and then over $551,00 and over $millions, the same. They don't want to do it because Politicians make they BIG bucks and they are the ones who "Don't " want to pay. They are greedy and the middle class and lower have to pay for their greed.

    Poverty in America

I appreciated Saturday morning segment on Poverty in America that features four women and their children to show what poverty in America means. the segment asserted that Americans should be outraged about poverty and want to do something about it. I was pleasantly surprised that the proposals for action were not another government program but action through individual volunteers and community programs.

    Tom,
I don't know if you like to read or not, but I would highly encourage to read "23 minutes in Hell", by Bill Wiese.

Tom, I sure hope and pray you are right. Because, once we leave this earth we will not get a second chance.
I beleive our lives on this earth is just temporary.
I beleive there is eternity, Heaven or Hell.
I also beleive if you reject JC, Hell is for eternity.
If you were to get in an accident today and die, I sure hope you made the correct decision.
    God Bless.

Death is the punishment for sin?

Sin, from the Aramaic, means- to miss the mark. It's been badly misinterpreted for thousands of years.

Do ya' think the "garden" story was written by a man? The portrait of Eve in Genesis calls to mind the Greek myth of Pandora. She was portrayed as a villain, too.

@Dan, the brain cells cease to function, thus loss of thought and mind. Nothingness and not even being aware of that. Sure do 'wish' there were more, that's why I appreciate life so much. Life and thought are so wondrous, that's why I appreciate the total freedom of thought. All living animals with brains have thought of some order. I highly respect that as well. All living things, want at birth or conception 'want' to live and reproduce and thrive. Death is not an option until death arrives.

Eve sinned, because she disobeyed God. He said "do not eat from the tree.....". She ate from that tree; therefore, she sinned.
Romans 6:23 states that death is punishment for sin.
So where is the "life" in that?

Every story discusses the political 'chess game', how the parties stand for certain things, how they are on opposite sides on issues and how officials are reluctant to 'cross the aisle' to resolve matters.

I elected people to represent me. I didn't elect a poltical party to represent me, nor were those people elected to represent a political party. The only thing people in Congress should be concerned about is what the people in their districts want - NOT what their party wants. And if what the district wants differs from the party, they should be voting that way, not falling into line with a party. Otherwise, they aren't doing their job, their pay and benefits should be cut off and they should immediately be removed from office.

Of course, to do that, they'd have to actually talk to people in their districts. And with rare exceptions, when's the last time you saw Congress meeting regularly with all their constituents, not just the ones who's idealogy meets the political party test?

I don't understand how the abuse of the world began in "The Garden."

It's quite possible Eve IS being terribly brave by crossing the boundary into the unknown, and venturing to discover what lies beyond the limits of animal existence. Consciousness?

Most people's interpretations of this story were handed to them. The "belief" is Eve sinned. I disagree. She gave us Life.

Tom, of course I can't answer these questions withou referring to the bible.
Could a Muslim answer questions about their religion without referring to the Quran?
You believe what you want and I believe what I beleive.

  12. Effects of Exercise on Children's Standardized Test Scores

Just saw a Dr. talk about his study looking at the effects of exercise on children's test scores. He spoke of the children's results being significant, yet take a look at the results. Children who did not exercise scored ~110 on a standardized test while kids who exercised before scored ~114. While this may be a significant statistical effect, can practical significance really be implied? Hard to see the results for that one...

@Dan, what's the good news? That there is something better after death? Is death better than life? Was the Bible written by men? Who is to say that they got it right? Do you think the world should be run as it was then or as is is now? Did God create man or man imagined God and then create Him through stories? Can you answer any of these questions without refering to the Bible?

    On a different note...
I was glad that after the story about the "pot-infused" ice-cream, you stated that you did not think this story was funny–as it was meant to be.
We parents have an uphill battle trying to keep our kids off of drugs. Today, smoking weed is as common as teens smoking cigarettes in generations past. Stories like this continue to make pot-smoking a "non-issue" in society, yet look at the addiciton problems we currently have.

    Dan September 16th, 2010 9:52 am ET

I am not registered with either party, I vote for the candidate, not the party.
But, one thing we haven't heard from anyone above is, yes, Bush was in office; however, Democrats have controlled both houses since Jan 2007, , almost 4 years, and ALL 3 (1 executive and 2 legislative) branches since Jan 2009, almost 2 years. Things have gotten much worse in the last 3-4 years.
So why is there so much continual blame on the former administration, when in fact the Democrats have had control?

    Still waiting on an answer.

"Progressive" government?... lol... is that code for stealing from those that have to give to those that don't have as opposed to treating all people equally?

    @Tom,
Actually, we fundamentalists have a very wide view of the world. There as missionaries all around the world. They are trying to spread the truth. Jesus said in Matthew 28 to go in to all the world and tell the "good news".
People say how can you beleive the bible? My question would be, how can we beleive George Washingrton was our first president? How many of us was alive when he was supposedly president? It is through historical data, just as biblical writings are.
God didn't create the world for abuse, it has been abused by man. It started in the Garden.
    God Bless.

Can somebody tell me why Glen Beck is so against a 'progressive' government when it seems like we really need 'progressive' and 'aggressive' action (at least temporarily) to get us out of this economic mess?

Christianity is as bad as Islam in every aspect.

There are "fundamentalists" of every religious persuasion.

To say or imply Christianity is better than Islam is just factually wrong.

    September 17, 2010 at 7:19 am |
  21. Tom-Vermillion Ohio

@Dan;That's that problem with 'fundamentalists', they have a very narrow view on the world and how it works. They cannot make the leap into reality that perhaps, their view of the world could be entirely wrong. They believe that God made the world for humankind to use and perhaps even abuse, so long as the 'holy book' is followed to the letter. The world is for the living and those yet to live and be born.

another way to think of recent primary results is that there are now clear choices. "Independents" now have a clear choice, this should concern incumbents.

I am a Christian, and I am very confused about Muslim/Islam. The Muslims "claim" to be a peaceful religion; however, last week's riots all around the world over the "threat" of burning the Quran, and then most recently the death threats against the cartoonist for drawing a cartoon of "Allah".
Where is the peace? As a Christian, I worship God and Jesus Christ, not some paper in a book. If some one wants to burn the bible, so be it, we can print more.
Why death threats over some picture? Are Muslims that offended? I don't know how many times God and Jesus Christ have been blasphemed, but Christians don't go threatening to kill.
Please explain the mentality behind this "peaceful" religion.
    Let's pray, not kill.
