After reading all of the facts regarding this situation, there were several ways for this matter to be taken care of short of watching this house burn to the ground. It is apparent that these Tennesseeans have lost something very important left to them by their ancestors. I hope they are able to rekindle their community responsibility and caring for each other. If not, I fear for all of us.

Did he have Homeowner's Insurance? If he didn't do you think that an Insurance Company will go ahead and replace everything and let him pay later? I think not. There are certain things in life you have to pay, that is just a fact. Don't pay and you suffer the consequences.

That city council should be kicked out, I have never heard of such a ridiculous service charge... Fire Department should be part of the Property Tax, or some form of Tax .... this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of....is the town run by the mafia, I wonder do the store owners have to pay the police department a protection fee or risk not having them show up during a robbery.

Just the beginning, in our area you have to pay for all services provided by fire dept. and the like. All state, cty, and city taxes only cover equipment and salaries, if they do anything you have to pay extra.

The $75 fee is Paying for Insurance. If you pay the premiums (as in $75) and have coverage (as in the fire department puts out your fire) then you reap the benefits (as is your house doesn't burn to the ground). If you fail to make the Premiums (the said $75) then you have no coverage (as in nothing gets done) and you reap no benefits(as in fire stays lit). Pretty simple, Huh??

Pathetic is the only word I can come up for the Mayor to try and compare Car Insurance with a situation like this. Way to have a simple mind Mr. Mayor. You have a bright future in politics, not so much in being a decent human being though.

I hope the insurance company sues the city and the fire department for the cost of rebuilding. As he said, they just wanted to prove a point and now someone needs to prove a point to them. Either you are a fire department or you're a mob looking for protection money, but you can't be both.

That's the chance you take when you don't carry insurance or services.
