Does Governor Perry intend to run for President? Erick Erickson weighs in

Texas governor Rick Perry will reportedly signal his intention to run for President this weekend at the conservative RedState Gathering in South Carolin, a key early primary state.

Perry will make a speech at the conference, after which he'll travel to New Hampshire to meet with GOP party activists. The governor's appearance coincides with a straw poll of Republican candidates in Iowa and his remarks are likely to distract Americans from his GOP rivals competing in the event.

Today on American Morning, Erick Erickson, editor-in-chief for Redstate.com, joins Christine Romans to weigh on the possibility that Governor Perry will announce a presidential run.

A similar CNNORC Poll found 84% of Americans are not pleased with how lawmakers are handling their job.

With Congress' disapproval ratings are at historic highs, what are the political implications of Americans' dissatisfaction with lawmakers? CNN Contributor John Avlon and CNN Senior Political Analyst Ron Brownstein discuss the winners and losers in this political climate.

AM EXCLUSIVE – Bachmann on being a foster mom: "A big family is a blessing"

In an exclusive interview with American Morning's Kiran Chetry, Republican Presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann explains how she chose to become a foster parent, the importance of balancing challenges in a marriage and her struggle to emerge out of poverty as a teenager.

"After my parents divorced, my family went into below poverty," Bachmann says. "We'd been kind of a middle-class, lower middle-class family, but after the divorce, we went below poverty and my mother made about $4800 a year. I had to get a job, my brothers got jobs; they delivered papers, I got a babysitting job. I made 50 cents and hour – that was big money back then. But you know, we wanted to help out, that's what we needed to do."

She adds: "My mother also said, 'You know, it won't always be this way, it'll get better.' And she told us to buckle down, do well in school and we all did and we all made it."

Kiran sat down with Bachmann yesterday to talk about the challenges of raising such a large family. See the interview above.

AM Exclusive: Bachmann a 'no' on Boehner debt plan

In an exclusive interview with American Morning's Kiran Chetry, Republican Presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann says she won't vote for House Speaker John Boehner's debt plan and opposes any plan that increases the debt ceiling.

"All of the plans out there start with the wrong premise...raise the debt ceiling," Bachmann says. "Out on the trail, people are saying 'Government, get your act together and cut spending.' Washington has their fingers in their ears right now. They're not listening to the American people. That's why I'm adamant – I will vote "no" on the increase on the debt ceiling. We need sanity back in Washington."

She went on to say that President Obama has failed to properly understand the issues. "On every measure, this President has failed," she says. "He has a big "F" on his economic report card. He has to take responsibility for the economy because he's the one who has made these decisions. That's not to say President Bush didn't overspend."

Kiran sat down with Bachmann yesterday to talk about her decision to run and how she would fix the nation's debt problems. The full interview will be uploaded throughout the morning. Stay tuned to American Morning for more.

AM Exclusive: Bachmann: Obama 'effectively a dictator' if 14th Amendment is invoked

If President Obama invokes the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling, he would "effectively be a dictator," Republican Presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann says in an exclusive interview with American Morning's Kiran Chetry.

“Congress has the power to lay and collect taxes," Bachmann says. "It's Congress that does the spending. The President is prohibited to do that. If he had the power to do that he would effectively be a dictator. There would be no reason for congress to even come into Washington DC. He would be making the spending decisions. He would be making the tax decisions. Clearly that's unconstitutional.”

With five days until the Aug 2nd deadline, the House is expected to vote on Speaker John Boehner's plan to cut government spending and raise the nation's debt ceiling. And Bachmann, along with a growing number of House Republicans, is saying she doesn't support the Speaker's plan.

Kiran sat down with Bachmann yesterday to talk about her decision to run and how she would fix the nation's debt problems. The full interview will be uploaded throughout the morning. Stay tuned to American Morning for more.
