Wyclef Jean to run for president of Haiti

(CNN) - Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean says he has submitted the necessary paperwork to run for president of Haiti, a country he left when he was a child.

Jean made the anticipated announcement Thursday on CNN's "Larry King Live." The singer traveled to Haiti to submit the paperwork.

Jean was one of the first, and most visible, celebrities to offer aid after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti in January. He has also been an outspoken proponent of the nation through his Yele Haiti Foundation, which has come under scrutiny for how it spends its money.

"Yes, it's my first time announcing it live - that today I went in, and I signed, and I am running to be the president of Haiti," said Jean, in his first television interview about his decision to run.

Whoever is elected in November, the new president will face the monumental task of rebuilding the country that was ravaged by a January 12 earthquake that killed more than 220,000 people, destroyed 60 percent of government infrastructure and left more than 180,000 homes uninhabitable.

Whoever steps in will also oversee the billions of dollars in international aid promised to the country since the quake.

"Now that our country has toppled, it's a chance to rebuild from the bottom on up," Jean said, adding he will be the voice of Haiti's youth.

Jean's announcement quickly became a top topic on the internet, with many debating whether the music star best known for rapping, playing the guitar and dancing, could actually lead a country.

One outspoken critic was actor Sean Penn, who has lived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, for months to help manage 50,000 displaced Haitians living in a camp.

Penn said he questioned Jean's motives. Read More

MIT students helped WikiLeaks suspect, hacker says

(CNN) - Adrian Lamo, the former computer hacker who tipped off federal authorities to WikiLeaks suspect Bradley Manning, says two men in the Boston area have told Lamo in phone conversations that they assisted Manning.

Lamo said both men attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but he refused to identify them because, he said, at least one of them has threatened him. One of these men allegedly told Lamo they gave encryption software to Manning and taught the Army private how to use it, Lamo said.

Manning, an Army intelligence analyst, is being held in solitary confinement at a Virginia detention facility. He is charged with leaking an airstrike video that the whistleblower website WikiLeaks published in April, and Pentagon officials say he is the prime suspect in last week's disclosure of thousands of field reports from the war in Afghanistan to the site.

Lamo claimed both men are working for WikiLeaks. Also, both men are Facebook friends with Lamo and Manning, and at least one continues to post Facebook messages on Lamo's wall, the former hacker said.

Asked for comment about Lamo's allegation that men working for WikiLeaks assisted Manning, WikiLeaks responded in an e-mail: "As a matter of policy, we do not discuss any matters to do with allegations relating to the identity of sources. Read More

The Taste of Pain: Sara vs killer curry

By Sara Sidner New York (CNN)

I don't do eating stunts, it's just not my thing. I don't like watching people shovel huge amounts of doughnuts or pies or whatever else down their gullets to win a prize. It's part guilt–knowing there are hungry people in the world- and part disgust, because it makes me queasy. Turns out I am a hypocrite. While in New York City I did as some of the locals do and took a food challenge. It's called the Phaal Curry Challenge, an idea thought up by Brick Lane Curry House in New York's East Village. The owners dare patrons to eat an entire bowl of their spiciest curry their so-called Phaal Curry. It has a total of ten different types of chili and peppers in it.

Town basks in media glow amid Clinton's wedding buzz

[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/30/chelsea.art.jpg caption="A new poll shows Romney up front in Iowa."]

(CNN) - A picturesque New York town is all abuzz and ready for its closeup as the countdown to Chelsea Clinton's wedding starts.

Clinton, 30, is expected to wed investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, 32, on Saturday in Rhinebeck.

The former first family is guarding details of the upcoming nuptials like state secrets, and has not released any information. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently said she's "under very strict orders" not to talk about it.

The order seems to extend to those involved in the planning. A host of vendors contacted by CNN declined to comment, including a florist rumored to be involved. CNN could not independently verify the wedding venue.

The secrecy and silence have only fueled the speculation.

Residents of Rhinebeck - population 4,000 - are hanging up congratulatory signs on windows.

And talking to television crews.

And hoping the influx of high-profile visitors will mean a boost in the town's economy.

And ... well, you get the point. Watch Video
