FDA: Silicone breast implants are safe, but will likely require additional surgery

US health regulators said on Wednesday that women who get silicone breast implants are likely to need additional surgery within ten years to address complications such as the rupturing of the device.

Although the FDA reports that silicone breast implants are safe, it plans to revise its safety labels after reviewing data from several long-term studies pertaining to health issues related to  implants.

CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, explains this new FDA report this morning on AM.

Actor Kevin Kline advocates for diabetes research

Kevin Kline is not only an Oscar winning actor, he's also a co chair of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Advocacy Program and a parent to a child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Aaron Kowalski, Ph.D. is a researcher with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and suffers from type 1 diabetes himself. Both join Kiran Chetry and Carol Costello this morning to discuss the importance of increasing funding for research on juvenile diabetes.

Kline shares how he and his family are personally affected by the gravity of the disease. Kowalski offers his thoughts about a potential cure in the future from great strides made today. Both will testify before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs today to urge federal officials to advance the testing of artificial pancreas systems, which could dramatically change the day-to-day management of type 1 diabetes.

FDA unveils graphic new cigarette warning labels

This morning, the FDA announced their final choices for the large graphic warning labels to be put on cigarette packs starting in the fall of 2012. Covering half of the pack, these images aim to show what cigarette smoke does to your body.

Senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joins Kiran Chetry and Carol Costello on American Morning to reveal the selection of images and to explain how effective similar anti-smoking warning labels have been in other countries.

Food allergies: What can you do to keep your kids safe?

A new study by Pediatrics has found that nearly 6 million, or 8% of children, have food allergies. Of those kids, about 30% are allergic to multiple foods, and just under 40% have experienced severe symptoms like anaphylaxis, low blood pressure and trouble breathing.

CNN Senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joins Carol Costello this morning to discuss what exactly is causing the allergy increase and to offer advice to concerned parents.

Montel Williams talks MS, medical marijuana and experimental surgery

For more than a decade, Emmy Award-winning television personality Montel Williams has publicly battled Multiple Sclerosis. Williams was diagnosed with MS, a potentially debilitating autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, in 1999 and has since campaigned to increase awareness of the disease.

Williams has openly touted the use of medical marijuana and recently announced his involvement in a medical marijuana consulting company. He is a proponent of fully legalizing the use of marjijuana. At the end of the month, Williams will undergo experimental surgery to correct chronic cerebrospinal venus insufficiency (CCVI), a condition associated with MS.

Williams joins American Morning to discus MS, the use of medical marijuana and his upcoming experimental surgery.
