In Depth: Listening Tour – why Americans see jobs and the economy as the biggest issue

On American Morning this morning we're launching the first segment in this week's In Depth: Listening Tour series. This week, we're looking at the issues that are going to be driving, motivating and impacting voters when Americans go to the polls to elect a President in seventeen months.

Two nationally syndicated radio talk show hosts with very different points of view join Christine Romans to talk about the issues that may be the deciding factors in the 2012 presidential election: jobs and the economy.

Ben Ferguson, conservative commentator and host of the Ben Ferguson Show, and Thom Hartmann, host of the left-leaning Thom Hartmann Radio Program, debate the polarizing issues that concern each of their audiences.

Why some companies are hiring, some not

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - In yet another alarm bell of a weakening U.S. economy, the job market took a disappointing turn in May.

The economy gained a mere 54,000 jobs in the month, a significant slowdown from 232,000 jobs added to payrolls in April, the government reported Friday.

Why are some companies hiring at a breakneck pace while others are sitting on the sidelines?

American Morning's Ali Velshi and Christine Romans talk to two business owners. Angela Selden with Arise Virtual Solutions is looking for qualified candidates to fill 11,000 jobs this year, while David Martin with Home Style Foods is not looking to make any new hires this year. On AM this morning, they explain their reasons why.

Where are the jobs? Look to Baytown, Texas

Continuing our CNN-TIME series on "America's Job Hunt," American Morning's Ali Velshi profiles a town in Texas with a surplus of jobs.

Baytown, Texas is a coastal city just outside of Houston, where companies like ExxonMobil, Chevron and Bayer are itching to fill jobs. As we found out, there are almost not enough skilled technology workers in the area to fill all the positions available.

See the report here.
