Somehow over the past week, we've taken the edge off the desperation in the markets and economy.
Let me be clear: there is a lot of work to do and many difficult months ahead. I'm not ready to say confidence has returned, but certainly the gloom is not so thick.
Why? A more unified message is emerging (either by accident or by design) that yes, there IS a road to recovery and yes, we are trying to get on it.
The chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, sat down with 60 Minutes because, he said, he wanted to speak directly to the American people. His message? The Fed is doing everything possible to support the economy. A recovery doesn't happen until the banks are stabilized. There is a plan for that but it will take time and patience.
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... Hillary Clinton? A new line of comic books hopes to spotlight powerful women in politics with four new biographical titles devoted to Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama, and Caroline Kennedy. The books are meant to be educational, but also fun and interesting for everyone from 12 year old boys to 50 year old women.
The Clinton and Palin comics go on sale Wednesday and demand has been so high Bluewater Productions, the Vancouver, WA based company that produces the comics, has already ordered a second printing. The Michelle Obama comic doesn't go on sale until April, but there are already orders for 25,000 copies and the book has already popped up on ebay. Kapow, Batman! We take a look at the newest comic book heroes.
I spent part of yesterday on Capitol Hill talking to two Democrats about how some in the party are getting nervous about the Obama Administration’s plans for the economy. Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter from New Hampshire passed along the message she gave directly to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner: “Hurry. Please hurry. Because people are waiting and they are hurting and they need the help now." She says she was simply relaying the message she’s getting from constituents at town meetings back in her home district.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged Democrats to stay on message. Her message: confidence. But she also acknowledged what top economists have told her, another stimulus package may be necessary. Some budget hawks in her own party don’t like the sound of that. North Dakota’s Earl Pomeroy told me, “I think if we were to have a vote on a stimulus package, it would probably fail.”
