Does unemployment money help or hurt?

(CNN) – By the time Congress returns to work next week, 2.1 million unemployed Americans will have lost their jobless benefits. That's because lawmakers failed to pass an extension before taking their summer break. That has a lot of Americans angry. But some economists insist unemployment extensions have to stop, claiming they add to the deficit and keep people out of work longer. Others call that perspective cruel, considering this economy. On Thursday's American Morning we were joined by two experts who squared off over the issue; Michael Tanner, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, and Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute. Harvard reaction mixed on Kagan military controversy

(CNN) – Elena Kagan yesterday defended her decision to briefly bar military recruiters from Harvard's career office because of the Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Her handling of the controversy has drawn mixed reaction from leaders on campus. Our Jim Acosta has the report.

Kagan videos show nominee praising Obama

(CNN) – President Obama’s pick for the Supreme Court has gone out of her way to avoid controversy during her legal career. But she can be seen and heard letting down her guard at times in videos posted on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Web site.

Kagan’s appearances at various seminars, graduations and alumni dinners were recorded on video by the Harvard Law School, where she served as dean. Watch Video

At a 2005 Harvard alumni awards dinner for then-Senator Barack Obama, Kagan gushes over the man who would become president as “her hero.”

Recalling how she witnessed his speech to the 2004 Democratic National Convention Kagan says, “He said a few words and the place was mesmerized. You could have heard a pin drop and that's all in part because of these rock star qualities. The eloquence, the magnetism, the great looks, the brilliance."

Sen. Sessions' concerns over Supreme Court nominee Kagan

(CNN) – On the day the Supreme Court wraps up its current term, Elena Kagan goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Kagan is expected to win Senate confirmation to the high court, but Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) says it won't be a "coronation." He's the ranking Republican on Judiciary committee and he joined us on Monday's American Morning to explain what he wants to hear from Kagan.
