Photojournalist records aftermath of devastation

As the tornado hit Joplin, Missouri, photojournalist Jaime Green was on her way to shoot a wedding in a neighboring town. Instead of covering the wedding, Green found herself taking pictures of the aftermath of the F4 tornado. She tells her story to CNN's American Morning.

Mississippi River still rising and heading further South

The Mississippi River is rising higher each day and the Army Corps of Engineers are exhausting every measure to keep the flooding under control. FEMA to send emergency texts to your cell during crisis

FEMA, the FCC and Mayor Bloomberg will be announcing the Personal Lookout Alerting Network (PLAN), a new technology that will turn mobile devices into personal emergency alert systems. Consumers can receive timely emergency alerts directly on their devices. Craig Fugate is announcing this new plan along with Mayor Bloomberg and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski

Memphis braces for record floods

Memphis, Tennessee (CNN) - Waging war on a flood of historic proportions that has already affected thousands in eight Midwestern and Southern states, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flooded a spillway north of New Orleans in an effort to calm the rising Mississippi River.

A crowd gathered near the gates of the Bonnet Carré Spillway to watch cranes slide open the gates to 28 of the spillway's 350 bays built beginning in 1929 after a devastating flood two years earlier.

Upstream in Memphis, Tennessee, residents and authorities anxiously waited for Mississippi to crest at a near-record 14 feet above flood stage. Read More
