What’s on Tap – Thursday July 16, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • An eighth suspect now under arrest in connection to the shocking home invasion murder of a Florida couple that had 17 kids.  Cops traced an accused killer’s steps and tracked her down.
Police say this was carefully planned, but were they the specific target? We’ll talk to the man in charge of the investigation.
  • Was it the turning point?  This morning, for the first time ever, we're seeing video of the Pepsi commercial shoot where Michael Jackson's hair caught fire.  And we can guarantee after seeing it, you'll never think of the accident in the same way.  We’re taking a look at whether this set the “king of pop” on a path to drug dependency… and his eventual death.
  • Will you get sick in the future?  And do you really want to know?  There's surprising new information on the psychological effect of getting bad news about your health, years ahead of time.  Dr. Sanjay Gupta has the pros and cons of finding out you're getting sick – in the future.
  • Former DC Mayor Marion Barry says there’s nothing wrong with hiring your girlfriend.  He did it.  And it could get him in big trouble.  He’s here live to defend himself.  You cannot miss this one!

What’s on Tap – Wednesday July 15, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • Race, abortion, gun control – all on the table as Republicans fired question after question at Judge Sonia Sotomayor.  Her answers were very careful ones.  The Supreme Court nominee will likely get more of the same later today.  We're looking at day two's heated exchanges – and what Sotomayor can expect in a few hours.
  • Is the secretary of state being sidelined?  She's supposed to be America’s top ambassador, but Hillary Clinton’s been out of the limelight since she broke her elbow last month.  Now some inside the beltway say the president's inner circle is keeping Clinton out.
  • Democrats on the hill have a few questions for former Vice President Dick Cheney.  The former VP’s now connected to a secret CIA program and Democrats are clamoring for President Obama to launch new investigations into the Bush administration.  But the White House is still saying it wants to look forward, not back.
  • An update to a story we’ve been following here on AM.  A day camp is now suing a Pennsylvania swim club over allegations of racism.  Parents say kids were kicked out of the pool, after they overheard things like “what are all these black kids doing here?”  The camp director joins us live.  Why she says “the children are permanently scarred.”

What’s on Tap – Tuesday July 14, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor is heading back to Capitol Hill in a few hours for day two of confirmation hearings.  She's almost certain to be confirmed to the high court, but not before a tough round of questions from Republicans.  We'll talk to two of the senators who will question Judge Sotomayor today, Senators Chuck Schumer of New York and Orrin Hatch of Utah.
  • Hole in a plane.  With 131 people on-board, at 30-thousand feet, a hole the size of a football rips through the fuselage of a Southwest jet.  The plane made an emergency landing in West Virginia.  But this morning, the terrifying accident is leaving officials with more questions than answers.
  • A Florida couple, shot to death in their home while nine of their adopted children were also in the house.  This morning police say they expect to make more arrests and admit they don't think robbery was the only motive in this crime.  We're live from Pensacola with the latest.
  • New developments in a story you saw here on American Morning. You may remember the Pennsylvania swim club that barred a group of mostly black day-campers because, as the pool president said, their presence would "change the complexion" of the place.  Some children said they overheard white members of the club saying things like: "what are all these black kids doing here?"  Well now, after the story made national headlines, the swim club is pulling an about face and inviting the kids to come back.  But parents say that's not enough.  They want the resignation of all board members of the swim club – and plan to file a federal lawsuit against it.

What’s on Tap – Monday July 13, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • Just hours from now, history unfolds as the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor begin.  Democrats have the votes to confirm her, but Republicans plan to use her own words against her.  We're live in Washington with what Sotomayor can expect.
  • Democrats want an investigation and Republicans say they're just playing politics with the fierce backlash over former Vice President Dick Cheney's secret CIA program.  There's growing pressure on the White House to act.  Did the former VP break the law?
  • She’s leaving office at the end of the month, but Alaska Governor Sarah Palin says she is not quitting politics.  Along with an upcoming book, Palin says her future could include supporting democrats
  • Booze and your brain.  We've all heard that a little wine every day can good for the heart, but a new study shows that some alcohol can be good for your brain, too.  A couple of drinks a day may even reduce the risk of dementia.  So what’s good and what’s one too many?  Our Senior Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen has some guidelines.

What's on Tap – Wednesday July 8th, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • A shocking new report just out shows major security lapses at federal buildings across the country.  Undercover agents get through security with all they need to make a bomb, and put them together, in the bathroom.
  • Stimulus “Blood in the Water.”  With the president overseas, and his vice president putting his foot in his mouth again, Republicans are on the attack, asking: “where are the jobs?”  They say President Obama's stimulus isn't working.  And now the president may want another one.  The debate over your money and your future, live from Washington.
  • It’s the day you’ve been waiting for, ladies, at least some of you.  Men may have just been made obsolete.  A group of British scientists claim they've made human sperm from embryonic stem cells.  They say it will help doctors better understand fertility.  Is it a medical breakthrough, or just science fiction?  Our Doctor Sanjay Gupta is here to make sense of it all.
  • Track marks on his arms, and, "dangerous medicines" in his mansion.  A source gives us new shocking details from the Michael Jackson investigation, after a memorable and heart-wrenching goodbye in front of thousands.

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • We are live outside the Staples Center this morning, where Michael Jackson will be remembered in what’s expected to be one of the biggest public memorials ever.  He didn’t do anything low key while he was alive.  His final farewell is no exception.  The fans have already started to arrive in downtown L.A.  Only 11,000 have a ticket.  And despite the city's pleas for those without one to stay away, police estimate the crowd could reach close to one million – and it will bridge generations.  Parents who played Stevie Wonder LP’s are bringing their kids, who download Usher MP3’s.   Both stars are expected to be here today to say goodbye to the biggest recording artist in history.
  • President Obama is beginning his second day in Russia with a visit to the man experts say is the country's real leader, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.  The president then took his message to the people, with a major speech in Moscow. Our top guy at the White House, Ed Henry sat down with the president in Moscow after his speech.  It's access to a high-stakes summit you won't get anywhere else.
  • The other big story.  Alaska Governor Sarah Palin giving her first interview to CNN since announcing she's resigning, saying she's “not a quitter.”  Our Drew Griffin caught up with her on a fishing trip.  Wait ‘till you see the waders!
