Developing now…

Health officials around the world are working to contain what appears to be a spreading swine flu outbreak. It’s now confirmed that the virus has spread overseas to Spain. Classes at one private Catholic high school in New York City are canceled today and tomorrow, after the CDC confirmed that eight students came down with the virus. America’s biggest city now trying to stop an outbreak. There are 20 cases and counting across the U.S.

We’re here to help you understand this deadly virus, what you can do if you feel symptoms and what you need to do to prevent them. Dr. Sanjay Gupta is answering your questions all morning long at twitter.com/amfix.

What's on Tap – Friday April 24th, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • Breaking now... The Defense Department will release "a substantial number" of photographs showing alleged prison abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.
  • Taking swipes at fees.  Credit card companies are receiving millions of dollars in bailout money but they still nickel-and-diming customers to death.  We want to hear your thought about the fees on your monthly bill.  Call 877-MYAMFIX and share your outrage.
  • Terror gaining ground.   Pakistan on Thursday sent a small number of paramilitary troops to the Buner district, which was taken over by Taliban forces in recent days. The response by the Pakistani government comes one day after Washington said Islamabad gave in to the militants by agreeing to their demand to impose Islamic law in the region, and that Pakistan faced an existential threat to its existence if it failed to react to the Taliban threat.
  • FAA: the bird strike files.   The Federal Aviation Administration is reversing its course and said it will publicly reveal its records on bird strikes. The FAA said it will make its entire Bird Strike database available on a public Web site today, and is withdrawing a proposal to keep some data confidential. The FAA had argued that protecting certain information, such as the names of airlines and airports involved in bird mishaps would encourage airlines to participate in the voluntary reporting program.
  • White house training.   The first lady's take on the new White House puppy? He's "crazy." Michelle Obama says "Bo" the Portuguese Water Dog loves to bark and play… and also likes to chew on people's feet. Mrs. Obama says she spends lots of time walking and training Bo, the energetic six-month-old pup who arrived at the White House last week as a gift to the Obama daughters.   Mrs. Obama gave her update on Bo during a White House program Thursday marking the annual “Take Your Child to Work Day.”
  • Plus Size Teenwear.  For years overweight teens had nowhere to shop. Not any more.  The latest fashion?  Plus size clothing for teens.  Target and Forever 21 are tapping into a new growth market that is pleasing some teens and marketers but angering nutritionists.  Is this a plus or minus?

What's on Tap – Thursday April 23, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • The fight to keep more money in your pockets. President Obama is meeting with top executives of credit card companies at the White House today. He’s looking to crack down on sketchy fees and corrupt lending practices. With car sales at historic lows and a massive backlog of unsold vehicles, General motors is reportedly set to announce the bulk of its plants will shut down for up to nine weeks over the summer. GM’s 55,000 workers could get the word on which ones will be affected as early as today.
  • Another domino falls. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Wednesday that Pakistan is in danger of falling into terrorist hands because of failed government policies. Taliban militants, who implemented Islamic law in Pakistan's violence-plagued Swat Valley last week, have now taken control of a neighboring district which brings them closer than they've been to the power center of a nation with nuclear weapons. We’ll ask a Former CIA Islamabad station chief what we can do, if anything to stop this.
  • Fidel’s Two Cents. Just when everyone is hailing the Big Thaw between U.S. and Cuba, Fidel Castro weighs in – again. In one of his seemingly endless essays, the ailing former president says Obama "misinterpreted" his younger brother Raul Castro – who offered to talk about "everything" including human rights and political prisoners with Obama. Fidel Castro says Raul is merely showing his faith in Cuba's Revolution. All of which raises the ongoing question – just who's in charge in Cuba anyway?
  • Michelle Obama’s style. It’s not just what she is wearing that is intriguing, it’s the possibility of what she could wear that has designers inspired. With the world watching to see what she’ll wear next, it’s no surprise that Michelle Obama has become a muse to many. In his fall line, Elie Tahari has created the “Michelle” dress. It’s more casual than what we’ve seen her wear, but more practical for day- to-day and more realistic for those who would like to emulate her style.

What’s on Tap – Wednesday April 22, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • Developing… President Obama has opened the door to prosecutions related to alleged torture techniques used on al Qaeda suspects during the Bush Administration.  At the same time, Republican officials have released a memo from the president’s own Intelligence Chief, suggesting these “harsh interrogations” like waterboarding, may have prevented attacks.  Where do you stand?  Call 877-MYAMFIX and become part of the newscast.
  • Craigslist CEO live.  One sheriff has called the classifieds site the world’s biggest “bordello.”  Now the section labeled “erotic services” is getting more dreadful publicity – after a 22-year-old, clean-cut and engaged med student is arrested for allegedly murdering a woman who offered massages on the site.  Should Craigslist do more to protect its users and clean things up?
  • Turbulence Paralyzes Woman.   A South Texas woman remained paralyzed Monday and in intensive care, after her flight experienced severe turbulence.  Her attorney says she hit her head on the bathroom ceiling as the plane dropped.
  • A new most wanted terrorist.  The FBI has posted a photo of a California animal rights activist alongside those of 23 operatives from al Qaeda and other groups, marking the first time a domestic terrorist is featured on the bureau's "Most Wanted Terrorists" list. The FBI announced the addition of Daniel Andreas San Diego to the list, hoping a burst of international publicity associated with the move will help investigators find him after six years on the run.
  • Abusing Women Online.  Perez Hilton stirred controversy when he referred to Miss California as a "dumb b-itch" on his blog.  While some might dismiss the post as just part of his usual snarky commentary, this kind of sexist language toward women is not uncommon online.  In the best case scenario such language can create a hostile environment on social networking and video posting sites.  In the worst case scenario it can serve as a red flag for people who commit violence against women in the real world.  Such was the case with Anthony Powell, a college student who posted numerous YouTube videos with sexist language about a young woman on his college campus.  He eventually shot her in a campus classroom before killing himself.

What’s on Tap – Monday April 20th, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today.

  • Breaking now: A hostage crisis on the runway.  Police are surrounding a Canadian jet in Jamaica.  Officials say the final two passengers have been released, but an armed suspect is still holding the crew, and we’re waiting to hear his demands.
  • Tornadoes in the dead of night – Severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings throughout the southeast overnight.  There are reports that a tornado touched down in Alabama.  One person killed.  Another critical.
  • The “torture” memo fallout.  Just days after his administration released the four Bush-administration memos on interrogation methods, President Obama visits CIA headquarters to meet with Director Leon Panetta and other CIA officials.
  • Former CIA Director Michael Hayden is criticizing the Obama administration for the release of the memos, saying that they have made the CIA’s job more difficult. He also said that four former CIA-heads as well as current Director Panetta had opposed the release.
  • Obama’s cost cutting challenge.  The president returned to Washington Sunday night with his eye back on his domestic agenda and a plan to save government money. Today, he’ll gather his full Cabinet together for the first time as president and challenge them to cut a total of 100 million dollars in the next 90 days, two senior administration officials said.
  • Payback time?  The bailout money seems to be working.  Short-lived or not, banks do appear to be turning things around.  Citigroup reports a first-quarter profit of $1.6 billion, the company's first quarterly profit since the fall of 2007.  Is this a sign that the rescue plan is working, and at whose expense?
  • Craigslist murder.  A gorgeous New York model who advertised massage services on Craigslist was shot dead at a posh Boston hotel.  And cops think the suspect struck again.
  • Madonna takes a tumble.  The material girl is thrown from a horse in the Hamptons, her second scare on the saddle.  And man is “Madge” having a bad year.  Divorce, adoption rejection and now this!

What's on Tap – Friday April 17, 2009

Here are the big stories on the agenda today:

  • President Obama is heading to Trinadad and Tobago this morning for a Summit of the Americas. The weekend gathering is expected to tackle issues such as the drug wars, global warming, and the recession. The President also hopes to improve relations with America’s neighbors – relations that deteriorated during the Bush presidency. The big question many people have – will the President meet with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez? According to the White House, there is no “one-on-one” meeting currently scheduled. What will the two leaders say if they happen to bump in to each other? We’ll have live coverage.
  • So how did the President’s trip to Mexico go? We know he and Mexican President Calderon talked about a wide range of issues from the deadly Mexican drug trade seeping across the border, and global warming, trade and immigration. But what did the huddle really accomplish? Both leaders agree that reintroducing a ban on deadly assault-style weapons in the United States could help reduce violence on both sides of the border. President Obama says he has not backed off a campaign pledge to try to restore the ban – although political observers in the United States say the President will not attempt to tackle the thorny issue any time soon.
  • We’re also wrapping up our series called “Drug Nation” and what can be done to better protect our borders.
  • Also today, Dr. Sanjay Gupta looks at how addicts often don’t check into a rehab center until it’s too late – so how do you get ahead of the problem and how do you choose the right center for you? Dr. Gupta has the answers in his series “Addiction, Life on the Edge”.
  • And an unassuming, unemployed 47-year-old woman from Scotland opens her mouth and shocks the world. We’ll introduce you to singing sensation, Susan Boyle. How’s she handling the meteoric fame and what will she do if she’s offered a big-time recording contract that is already rumored to be in the works?
