Underwater robots toil in the abyss

(CNN) – For the past 45 days, we've been relying on underwater robots to fix the man-made disaster deep in the Gulf of Mexico. They've been our eyes – providing live feeds of the disaster, and our hands – holding saws that are gnawing through thick pipe at the bottom of the sea. Our Rob Marciano got a look at some of the underwater ROVs being used to stop the Gulf Coast oil spill.

Maytag Corp. recalls 1.7 million dishwashers

(CNN) – This ought to keep the Maytag repairman busy for a while.

The appliance manufacturer along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday announced the recall of about 1.7 million dishwashers made by the company between February 2006 and April of 2010.

"An electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can pose a serious fire hazard," said the recall notice issued by the CPSC.

"Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element fires that have resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire," the CPSC said. There have no reports of injuries.

The recall includes select Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa and Crosley brands manufactured by Maytag.

The company has set up a website where customers can check their unit's serial number to see if it is included in the recall - www.repair.maytag.com.

Consumers will be able to choose between having their dishwasher repaired or accepting a rebate toward the purchase of a new dishwasher.

The Maytag repairman has been a staple of the company's corporate image. Since 1967, Maytag has touted its quality by showing a bored repairman with nothing to do.

BP seeks yet another way to stop oil leak as protests loom

(CNN) – BP seemed to be getting criticism from every angle as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico entered its 45th day Thursday and every effort to stop the historic flow is still failing.

As the oil company was getting increased scrutiny from Congress and the president, a grassroots campaign dubbed Seize BP planned demonstrations in more than 50 cities to start Thursday.

"From Florida to Seattle, Washington, from Hawaii to New York, all over California and many, many states across the country, people will be taking to the streets over the next week to demand that the assets of BP be seized now," said Richard Becker, a member of the San Francisco chapter of the group. "We know millions of people are deeply concerned about what's going on in the Gulf right now and we expect large numbers of people to come out to the protests."

Sentiment like this has seemed to grow as more and more oil from the underwater gusher has made its way to or near coastal areas of Louisiana, Florida and other gulf states. Read more

Ump's call robs pitcher of immortality

There have been 21 perfect games in the history of Major League Baseball. Only 20 of them will officially count. There's no other way to say it: Last night in Detroit, Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga got robbed. Galarraga retired 27 consecutive batters, only to have the last out of the game incorrectly ruled safe by umpire Jim Joyce. CNN contributor and HBO Sports analyst Max Kellerman will join us this morning for his analysis.

Sound off: What do you think of the call? Should Commissioner Bud Selig step in and award a perfect game to Galarraga? We want to hear from you this morning. Add your comments to the LIVE Blog below and we'll read some of them on the show.

Oil 'everywhere' on Alabama beach

(CNN) – Robotic subs are trying to make a clean cut through the gushing oil pipe at the bottom of the Gulf. Then BP will attempt to cap it and contain the oil that's gushing out. But the fix can't come fast enough though for the barrier islands along the Gulf shores.

The oil is now arriving at a small strip of land called Dauphin Island in Alabama, sitting at the mouth of Mobile Bay. Because of that, the Alabama Department of Public Health is discouraging people from swimming in the waters. Cleanup crews are now shoveling oil from the sand and scientists are currently testing the waters by the beaches. Our John Zarrella witnessed the strange sight on those beaches yesterday.
